Cardinals-Eagles preview: A stretch of crucial games continues

The Eagles will travel to Arizona to take on the Cardinals in a matchup that is crucial for both teams.

The Arizona Cardinals bested the formerly first place New York Giants last Sunday highlighted by a record-setting day for Haason Reddick. The Cardinals offense appeared to finally find its groove after a frustrating three weeks.

This week, the Philadelphia Eagles come to town. The Cards outclass the Eagles in most statistics, but they will not be facing the traditional 2020 Philly team. Rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts made his first start last week, doing enough to beat the previously No. 1 seeded New Orleans Saints (albeit without Drew Brees). The team as a whole appeared to rally behind their young signal-caller and play much better.

It certainly couldn’t come at a more crucial time for the Cardinals, who must keep winning with the Vikings and Bears not far behind in the playoff hunt. Let’s dive in.

Kyler Murray’s performance vs. Giants was one of most notable of Week 14

Touchdown Wire’s Mark Schofield included Murray in the five most notable QB performances of Week 14.

The Arizona Cardinals played well in their win over the New York Giants in Week 14 and quarterback Kyler Murray had his best game in a while. His play in the passing game was better than the previous few games.

Touchdown Wire’s Mark Schofield included Murray’s performance among the five most notable of the week.

Another team that really helped themselves this past weekend is the Arizona Cardinals. Not only did their win over the New York Giants move them back into the final playoff spot, but their offense got on track in the win. Kyler Murray completed 24 of 35 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown, and the offense looked more in rhythm than it had in the past month. This video highlights how the offensive play designs can give a quarterback information before the snap and options after the snap, and also dives into the alignment and usage of DeAndre Hopkins:

Murray looked noticeably more comfortable making different reads on Sunday. He did not turn the ball over and made a couple “wow” throws as well.

If he can play how he did against the Giants over the final three games, the Cardinals will be in good shape to make the postseason for the first time since 2015.

Schofield’s QB Camp: The five notable quarterback performances of week 14

Kyler Murray, Drew Lock and yes Andy Dalton highlight this week’s quarterback video breakdowns.

This is an exciting week here at Schofield’s QB Camp.

Why? Because we get some new faces paying a visit to these parts. A few quarterbacks that get to make their debuts, including a veteran who was making a homecoming of his own this past Sunday.

So let’s dive into five notable quarterback performances from Week 14.

Former Oklahoma QBs Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts to play each other on Sunday

Former Oklahoma quarterbacks Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts are set to face off on Sunday in Arizona.

Former Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts got his first career NFL start on Sunday with the Philadelphia Eagles in an upset win over the New Orleans Saints.

Hurts took over for Carson Wentz after his continued struggles in recent weeks and did some good things in his first start helping snap a five-game losing streak against one of the top teams in the entire league.

Eagles’ coach Doug Pederson was non-committal after the game if Hurts would continue to start going forward, but it has been reported today that he will indeed get the nod again next Sunday.

Awaiting him will be another former Sooner quarterback in Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals setting up an all-Oklahoma duel in the desert.

Murray and fellow former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield matched up last year as well, with Murray getting the better of that collision.

While Hurts and Murray were never with the Sooners at the same time, this still sets up a wildly interesting quarterback duel for Oklahoma fans. The matchup will take place on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. CT in Glendale.

Doug Pederson announces Jalen Hurts will remain the Eagles starting QB

Doug Pederson Jalen Hurts will remain the Eagles starting QB

[jwplayer YqDFDIWU]

After taking a few hours to sleep on it, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson just announced that Jalen Hurts, will remain Philadelphia’s starting quarterback for the Week 15 matchup against Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals.

During his morning appearance on 94WIP, Pederson had this to say.

“I’m going to take a look at [the Saints film]. I’m going to look at a lot of different things before I make that determination this week,” he said.

Hurts went 17-for-30 for 167 yards and a touchdown against New Orleans and also carried the ball 18 times for 106 yards, becoming the fifth Eagles quarterback to rush for 100 yards in the Super Bowl era, joining Mike Vick, Donovan McNabb, Randall Cunningham, and Jack Concannon.

Even more importantly, Hurts utilized his legs to avoid any negative plays while avoiding being sacked or throwing an interception.

Updated NFC playoff picture, Saints projection after Week 14 games

The New Orleans Saints are still projected to win the NFC South, but they have a lower spot in the NFC playoff picture after Week 14.

The New Orleans Saints overlooked the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 14 and fell to 10-3, significantly shifting the postseason landscape. Instead of being the projected No. 1 seed with a first-round bye, they’re now on track to face the wild-card Arizona Cardinals and Kyler Murray in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Here’s your updated NFC playoff picture:

Giants fall to Cardinals: Winners, losers and those in between

Here are the winners, losers and those in between from the New York Giants’ Week 14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

The New York Giants had their four-game winning streak snapped as they fell to the Arizona Cardinals, 26-7, in what was an ugly performance.

After missing one game due to a hamstring injury, quarterback Daniel Jones returned to the lineup, but looked far from healthy. Jones had trouble moving in the pocket and could not use his legs to takeoff and run.

As a result, Jones was sacked six times and was clearly hobbling around all afternoon. The Giants’ offense could not get anything going as they were only able to scratch across 159 total yards and went 3-for-12 on third down.

Colt McCoy was forced to play the game’s final drive in relief of a gimpy Jones.

For now, the Giants fall back to second place in the NFC East behind the Washington Football Team.

Here’s a look at the winners, losers and mixed reviews from the Giants’ Week 14 loss to the Cardinals.

Giants dropped by Cardinals, 26-7: Instant analysis

Instant analysis of the New York Giants’ 26-7 Week 14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals at MetLife Stadium.

The New York Giants came into the game on Sunday with the Arizona Cardinals riding a four-game winning streak. The Cardinals were on a three-game skein.

That’s why the oddsmakers made the Cardinals three-point favorites in this game. Streaks don’t last long in this unusual NFL season and two of them were broken in one fell swoop at MetLife Stadium this afternoon.

The Cardinals routed the listless Giants, 26-7, and it wasn’t even that close.

The Giants got starting quarterback Daniel Jones (hamstring) back for this one after missing last week’s win in Seattle. He did not look right from the start. On the Giants’ opening series, Jones was sacked by former Giant outside linebacker Markus Golden, who picked up the fumble and ran it down to the Giants’ 9.

Arizona could not take advantage, however, getting stonewalled on three running plays before quarterback Kyler Murray tried to sneak a pass into Keesean Johnson in the back of the end zone on fourth down only to be swatted away by Giants cornerback James Bradberry.

The Cardinals, who lead the NFL in red zone scoring, were stopped again on their next trip later in the first quarter, settling for a 34-yard field goal from Mike Nugent (yes, that Mike Nugent) to give Arizona a 3-0 lead.

The Giants stopped the Cardinals again in the red zone in the second quarter, resulting in a second Nugent field goal to extend Arizona’s lead to 6-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Dion Lewis fumbled the football on the 20 when a Cardinals player appear kicked the ball out of his hands. No penalty was called. This time the Cardinals capitalized when Murray threw a pass off his back foot to tight end Dan Arnold for a seven-yard touchdown and a 13-0 Arizona lead.

The Giant offense couldn’t have been flatter in the first half. Jones, deprived of his mobility, was forced to rely on his passing ability. His line was awful: 6-for-12 for 44 yards with six QB hits (three of which were sacks) and two fumbles (one lost).

The Giants gained just 58 yards in the first half with four first downs and ran just 25 plays. They went 1-for-6 on third down and did not run a single play in Arizona territory.

The second half brought more frustration. The Cardinals scored a touchdown and a field goal in their first three possessions while the Giants just one scoring drive, a four-play, 75-yarder that resulted in a Dion Lewis one-yard touchdown dive.

The final result was a troubling loss, leaving the Giants in a lurch to hope the rest of the NFC East keeps losing.

Jones (11-of-21 for 127 yards) was obviously impaired and his teammates and coaches did very little to pick him up. The offensive line had a rough day against the average Arizona front. Jones was sacked six times and hit a total of nine.

In the end it was a one-sided affair with Arizona (7-6) getting themselves back into the NFC playoff picture while the Giants dropped to 5-8 on the season losing a game they were never able to get into. Their offense was anemic and their special teams not so special. They had been playing close games for most of the year but this one was never in doubt.

Notes

  • For the second consecutive week the Giants went scoreless in the first half.
  • Their streak of 100-yard rushing games ended at seven as they gained only 78 yards on the ground against the Cardinals’ 21st-ranked rush defense.
  • The Cardinals rushed for 163 yards against the Giants’ fourth-ranked run defense, the most by an opponent this season.
  • The time of possession told the story of the game: Arizona 37:52, Giants 22:08.
  • The Giants had a turnover ratio of +6 during their four-game winning streak. Today, they went minus-3. Jones fumbled three times and lost one. Colt McCoy also lost one. The Cardinals fumbled three times and lost none. There were no interceptions in the game.
  • Arizona linebacker Hassan Reddick recorded five sacks, which is a Cardinals’ franchise record.

Former Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray throws touchdown pass in win over New York Giants

Former Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray had a touchdown toss in Arizona’s win over New York on Sunday.

Former Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals made their second trip of the season to East Rutherford, New Jersey on Sunday to do battle with the suddenly surging New York Giants.

The Cardinals came in scuffling having dropped three in a row and four of their last five to dip them down to 6-6 on the season. Despite the rough patch, they still are good shape to make the postseason with the expanded playoffs this year as long as they can find some wins down the stretch.

It wasn’t the prettiest game of the season for Murray and Arizona, but it was a solid performance to get a big 26-7 road win.

Murray finished the day 24/35 passing for 244 yards and one touchdown. He also tacked on 47 yards on the ground on the afternoon.

It was an important win for the Cardinals to get back above .500 at 7-6 as they now currently hold the final playoff spot in the NFC with the Minnesota Vikings‘ loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Next up for Arizona will be a home matchup with another former Sooner quarterback Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday afternoon.

Giants go from red hot to ice cold in 26-7 loss to Cardinals

The New York Giants came into Week 14 red hot but left it ice cold following a 26-7 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

The New York Giants entered Week 14 on a four-game winning streak and had an opportunity to tighten their stranglehold on the NFC East, but that’s not how things went down on Sunday.

Out of the gate, the Giants looked like a different team in all facets of the game, while the Arizona Cardinals looked both prepared and confident.

As the game progressed, things went from bad to worse. And when all was said and done, Joe Judge’s Giants found themselves back in the loss column and one step closer to an early offseason.
