Cardinals place Dennis Gardeck on IR, make other roster moves

Mike Nugent is signed to the active roster after Zane Gonzalez is placed on IR earlier in the week.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a number of roster moves on Friday on the eve of their Week 16 game against the San Francisco 49ers. They placed a player on injured reserve, added two players to the roster, elevated one from the practice squad for the game and signed a kicker to the practice squad.

Cardinals protect K Mike Nugent, 3 others on practice squad in Week 16

They protect Nugent, TE Seth DeValve, DL Michael Dogbe and LB Terrance Smith. All four have played in games this season.

The Arizona Cardinals do not currently have a kicker on their roster, as Zane Gonzalez was placed on injured reserve last week. Mike Nugent, who handled kicking duties the last two weeks, has reverted to the practice squad.

To make sure Nugent is available to kick on Saturday against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 16, the team protected him and three others from being signed by other teams this week.

According to the league transaction report, the Cardinals protected the following players:

  • K Mike Nugent
  • TE Seth DeValve
  • DL Michael Dogbe
  • LB Terrance Smith

Nugent will kick for the Cardinals this weekend. He will be brought up before the game. DeValve has been elevated to the active roster for games twice this season. With Maxx Williams and Darrell Daniels both injured and day-to-day, the Cardinals might need him again this weekend.

Dogbe has been protected multiple weeks this season and has been elevated three times this season to the roster.

Smith was elevated to the active roster for Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He played on special teams. Since linebacker Kylie Fitts is recovering from a hamstring injury that kept him out of Sunday’s game, protecting Smith ensures that role is filled.

Cardinals place K Zane Gonzalez on IR, make other roster moves

The Cardinals will have Mike Nugent kicking again this weekend against the Eagles.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a number of roster moves on Saturday afternoon to prepare for their Week 15 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles at State Farm Stadium. They brought back a player from injured reserve, added a pair to IR and brought up some practice squad players to the active roster.

Kliff Kingsbury fully confident in Mike Nugent if he has to kick again in Week 15

Zane Gonzalez is day-to-day with a back injury this week.

The Arizona Cardinals had to go with a different kicker last weekend against the New York Giants. Zane Gonzalez suffered a back injury late in the week that kept him from playing. That led to Mike Nugent’s elevation from the practice squad and his going 4-for-4 no field goals and 2-for-2 on extra points.

Nugent’s number might be up again this weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles. Gonzalez’ status is up in the air as he missed practice on Wednesday.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury isn’t worried if he has to go with Nugent instead of Gonzalez.

“He’s got a great approach,” Kingsbury told reporters on Wednesday. “He’s been around this league a lot and kicked at a high level for a long time, so we feel confident. It was a great job what he did and we feel confident in what he can do if called upon again.”

Kingsbury was pleased with how things went against the Giants.

There was a little extra for him because Nugent was actually a teammate of his years ago in Kingsbury’s playing days when he was with the New York Jets. Kingsbury’s one year with the Jets in 2005 was Nugent’s rookie season.

“I’ve known him for a long time, so to see him come back to New York and have that type of afternoon was awesome,” Kingsbury said after the game on Sunday. “He’s been great since he’s been here, brings great energy, veteran presence to the building, so I couldn’t be more impressed by the way he handled that today.”

Nugent, now 38 years old, hasn’t had a full-time position with an NFL team since 2016.

He will have to deal with uncertainty again this week.

“We’ll kind of see where it goes with Zane,” Kingsbury said of the back injury. “It’s day-to-day, so I’m sure that will be sorted out later in the week.”

The studs in the Cardinals’ Week 14 win over the Giants

Four players and their performance stood out more than any other.

The Arizona Cardinals picked up a big win on Sunday, defeating the New York Giants 26-7 on the road. It ended a three-game losing streak and gave them possession of the No. 7 seed in the NFC, the final wild card spot, with three games to go.

They got big performances from several players.

Who were the studs in the win?

Giants dropped by Cardinals, 26-7: Instant analysis

Instant analysis of the New York Giants’ 26-7 Week 14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals at MetLife Stadium.

The New York Giants came into the game on Sunday with the Arizona Cardinals riding a four-game winning streak. The Cardinals were on a three-game skein.

That’s why the oddsmakers made the Cardinals three-point favorites in this game. Streaks don’t last long in this unusual NFL season and two of them were broken in one fell swoop at MetLife Stadium this afternoon.

The Cardinals routed the listless Giants, 26-7, and it wasn’t even that close.

The Giants got starting quarterback Daniel Jones (hamstring) back for this one after missing last week’s win in Seattle. He did not look right from the start. On the Giants’ opening series, Jones was sacked by former Giant outside linebacker Markus Golden, who picked up the fumble and ran it down to the Giants’ 9.

Arizona could not take advantage, however, getting stonewalled on three running plays before quarterback Kyler Murray tried to sneak a pass into Keesean Johnson in the back of the end zone on fourth down only to be swatted away by Giants cornerback James Bradberry.

The Cardinals, who lead the NFL in red zone scoring, were stopped again on their next trip later in the first quarter, settling for a 34-yard field goal from Mike Nugent (yes, that Mike Nugent) to give Arizona a 3-0 lead.

The Giants stopped the Cardinals again in the red zone in the second quarter, resulting in a second Nugent field goal to extend Arizona’s lead to 6-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Dion Lewis fumbled the football on the 20 when a Cardinals player appear kicked the ball out of his hands. No penalty was called. This time the Cardinals capitalized when Murray threw a pass off his back foot to tight end Dan Arnold for a seven-yard touchdown and a 13-0 Arizona lead.

The Giant offense couldn’t have been flatter in the first half. Jones, deprived of his mobility, was forced to rely on his passing ability. His line was awful: 6-for-12 for 44 yards with six QB hits (three of which were sacks) and two fumbles (one lost).

The Giants gained just 58 yards in the first half with four first downs and ran just 25 plays. They went 1-for-6 on third down and did not run a single play in Arizona territory.

The second half brought more frustration. The Cardinals scored a touchdown and a field goal in their first three possessions while the Giants just one scoring drive, a four-play, 75-yarder that resulted in a Dion Lewis one-yard touchdown dive.

The final result was a troubling loss, leaving the Giants in a lurch to hope the rest of the NFC East keeps losing.

Jones (11-of-21 for 127 yards) was obviously impaired and his teammates and coaches did very little to pick him up. The offensive line had a rough day against the average Arizona front. Jones was sacked six times and hit a total of nine.

In the end it was a one-sided affair with Arizona (7-6) getting themselves back into the NFC playoff picture while the Giants dropped to 5-8 on the season losing a game they were never able to get into. Their offense was anemic and their special teams not so special. They had been playing close games for most of the year but this one was never in doubt.

Notes

  • For the second consecutive week the Giants went scoreless in the first half.
  • Their streak of 100-yard rushing games ended at seven as they gained only 78 yards on the ground against the Cardinals’ 21st-ranked rush defense.
  • The Cardinals rushed for 163 yards against the Giants’ fourth-ranked run defense, the most by an opponent this season.
  • The time of possession told the story of the game: Arizona 37:52, Giants 22:08.
  • The Giants had a turnover ratio of +6 during their four-game winning streak. Today, they went minus-3. Jones fumbled three times and lost one. Colt McCoy also lost one. The Cardinals fumbled three times and lost none. There were no interceptions in the game.
  • Arizona linebacker Hassan Reddick recorded five sacks, which is a Cardinals’ franchise record.

Mike Nugent to kick for Cardinals vs. Giants after Zane Gonzalez downgraded

Zane Gonzalez has a back injury. Originally questionable for the game, he was downgraded on Saturday.

The Arizona Cardinals will have a different kicker on Sunday when they take on the New York Giants. The team announced Zane Gonzalez was downgraded from questionable to out of the game with a back injury.

He suffered a back injury and was limited in practice on Friday.

With Gonzalez out, it means fans will get to see Mike Nugent.

Nugent, on the practice squad for most of the season, was elevated to the active roster.

The 38-year-old kicker has been in the league since 2005 but has not had a steady job since 2016.

He actually has kicked for the Cardinals before, appearing in two games, making two field goals and eight extra points in 2009.

In his career, he had made 80.9% of his field-goal attempts.

It will be interesting to see how he performs, especially if he is given an opportunity between 40-49 yards. Gonzalez has missed five such kicks this season, including three that would have either tied the game or given the Cardinals a lead in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

Cardinals sign veteran K Mike Nugent to practice squad

HC Kliff Kingsbury says it is nothing more than COVID insurance if kicker Zane Gonzalez were to suddenly not be available.

The Arizona Cardinals added a kicker to their team on Friday. The team announced it signed veteran kicker Mike Nugent to the practice squad.

Nugent is 38 years old and has been in the league since 2005. He even has played for the Cardinals in 2009 for two games, replacing an injured Neil Rackers and making two field goals and two extra points.

According to head coach Kliff Kingsbury, it has been “something in the works for the last month.” He indicated it is simply a precaution the team is taking so they have a specialist on call in case kicker Zane Gonzalez were to land on the COVID-19 reserve and not be able to play. The Cardinals would have someone who could kick extra points and do kickoffs.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have another kicker on the roster to push Gonzalez, even as a reminder that NFL jobs can be temporary. Gonzalez, after missing only four kicks all last season, missed two field goals in Week 1 in the Cardinals’ 24-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers.

In his career, Nugent has converted 258-of-319 (80.9%) field-goal attempts and 378-of-393 extra-point attempts for 1,152 career points. He has also played in five postseason contests and made 7-of-8 field-goal attempts and all five extra points he attempted.

5 interesting stats from the Jets’ Week 14 win over Dolphins

Here are five interesting stats from the Jets’ Week 14 win over the Miami Dolphins.

The Jets avoided the season sweep of the Dolphins with a 22-21 win Sunday, courtesy of Sam Ficken game-winning, 44-yard field goal.

The Jets looked as if they were going to have an easy victory on their hands when they jumped out to an early 10-point lead, but the offense went stagnant after the first quarter. However, the defense held its own by not allowing a single Miami touchdown, while the offense put together a solid final drive in order to secure the victory.

Even with the win, the Jets were officially eliminated from playoff contention with the Titans and Steelers both winning their games on Sunday.

Let’s take a look at some interesting stats from Gang Green’s win.

Ficken’s walkoff longest in franchise history

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

Sam Ficken lifted the Jets to victory with a 44-yard field as time expired. It was the 23rd walkoff field goal by a Jets kicker with no time left on the clock or in overtime. It was also the longest walkoff in franchise history by a Jets kicker. The previous long was held by both Mike Nugent and Nick Folk at 43 yards.

For Ficken, it was the best moment of his pro career and a day he’ll remember forever.
