Kyle McCord responds to Ohio State loss to Michigan

Is he right? #GoBucks

Was former quarterback Kyle McCord happy to see Ohio State lose to Michigan last Saturday?

His answer didn’t necessarily indicate that he was happy about the Buckeyes loss, but he did seem justified and fulfilled in knowing that he wasn’t the problem with the program.

He went on the Dan Le Batard Show and discussed just about everything.

Included in that were a few notes on Ohio State, where he played his first three college seasons while starting last season alongside star wide receiver and top-five pick Marvin Harrison Jr.

After a falling out at Ohio State, McCord transferred to Syracuse, where he shined. The Orange took down the then-top-10 Miami Hurricanes in the last week of the season, topping off a terrific season for the signal-caller.

That said, here’s how he answered the question of whether or not he was happy Ohio State lost.

McCord ended the 2024 season, assuming he’ll not play in the Orange’s bowl game, with an ACC-high 4,326 passing yards. He had the most passing completions, passing attempts, and interceptions in the conference.

It was a strong season despite his consistent turnovers. He’ll now turn his attention to the NFL Draft, where he hopes to hear his name called in just a few short months.

Power Four coach offers Ryan Day a gift for letting Kyle McCord go

Ohio State football’s Ryan Day parted ways with Syracuse starting quarterback Kyle McCord after last season, and Fran Brown is happy he did.

Kyle McCord has had a terrific season for Syracuse. McCord, who started for the Ohio State football last season, parted ways with Ryan Day and the Buckeyes program after a disappointing 2023 campaign.

He had been with the Buckeyes since 2021, spending two seasons as a backup quarterback. McCord’s good friend, Marvin Harrison Jr., went pro, and he found a place where he could be a star.

He’s certainly become that with the Orange. McCord upset the top-ten Miami Hurricanes Saturday, and he threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns, arguably his most complete game of the season.

A few days after the game, Syracuse’s head coach continued to highlight how good the senior quarterback has been. He has an ACC-high in passing yards, passing completion, and passing attempts.

Here’s how he phrased his appreciation to Day for letting go of McCord. Fran Brown said he owns Day a case of champagne.

McCord has been winning as well and has the Orange sitting fourth in the ACC. With a 9-3 overall record, they won’t make the College Football Playoff, but they will be playing a bowl.

Kyle McCord reacts to Ohio State losing to Michigan football

He wasn’t (and isn’t) the problem in Columbus. #GoBlue

At Ohio State, quarterback C.J. Stroud was beloved despite never beating Michigan football. That’s in large part due to his leading a vaunted offense that was often firing on all cylinders — even in The Game. But his replacement, Kyle McCord? He never stood a chance.

Because after losing to Michigan in 2022, OSU coach Ryan Day, again, shifted more toward attempting to be a more physical, downhill running team. That meant sacrificing the passing game. And Kyle McCord wasn’t quite the dynamic quarterback Stroud was.

But he was more than serviceable. However, after he threw two interceptions in a 30-24 loss in Ann Arbor, McCord was essentially run out of town in favor of Will Howard, the Kansas State transfer.

McCord ended up at Syracuse, where, on the same day his former team lost — again — to Michigan, he beat Miami, which had the quarterback Ohio State wanted most, Cam Ward.

So after the game, McCord was asked about, well, all of the above. And he simply said, with a smile, ‘Everything comes full circle!’

Despite him being a former Buckeye, Michigan fans tend to have a soft spot for McCord because of him being run off the team. This will certainly ingratiate him to them that much more.

Syracuse’s Fran Brown hyped up Kyle McCord in a classy gesture after he threw 3 pick-6s in first half

This is what good coaching looks like.

Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord had one of the worst halves of college football we’ve seen this season on the road against Pittsburgh on Thursday night.

McCord threw a whopping four picks before halftime, three of those going back for Pittsburgh touchdowns. It was very bad.

As one could imagine, McCord looked dejected on the sideline after throwing his fourth pick of the game. However,  Syracuse coach Fran Brown made sure to come up to him and provide some intense encouragement.

You could tell that Brown understood the urgency to support his quarterback after such an awful half of football. This is what good coaching looks like.

Kyle McCord leads Syracuse to victory, puts himself in Heisman conversation

Ohio State fans are left wondering what could have been after a huge game from former quarterback Kyle McCord for Syracuse.

Week 2 went about as well as it could have for coach Fran Brown and the Syracuse Orange. ‘Cuse took down a ranked Georgia Tech squad, 31-28, to move to 2-0 on the season.

The star for Syracuse was quarterback Kyle McCord, who completed 32 passes for 381 yards and four touchdowns, with most of his damage coming in the first half.

It is now the second straight game where McCord has thrown for over 350 yards with four touchdown passes, having hit those totals in Week 1’s 38-22 win over Ohio.

The Ohio State transfer is off to an elite start to the season, putting himself on the Heisman Trophy radar for an upstart ‘Cuse team and causing Buckeyes fans to wonder what could have been.

It’s not that McCord was bad at Ohio State – he threw for 3,170 yards with a stellar 24-to-6 touchdown-to-interception ratio in 2023 – but the early returns for the senior at Syracuse seem to point to a player who had more potential that was not unlocked by coach Ryan Day in Columbus.

Whether McCord can stay in the Heisman conversation depends not only on his continued performance but the performance of the Orange, who are off in Week 3 before hosting new ACC foe Stanford on Friday, September 20 at 10:30 PM ET.

Kyle McCord with career-best four touchdowns in first start for Syracuse

Are you cheering for McCord this season? #GoBucks

Marvin Harrison Jr. and Kyle McCord were close friends that had a long history together.

When the former left for the NFL, the latter departed as well, whether by choice or by the fact that Ohio State was primed to bring in a star transfer to contend for that starting quarterback spot.

Nonetheless, McCord took his talents to Syracuse, which opened its series with Ohio University at home Saturday. McCord threw for four touchdowns, the best of his career in his first game not playing for the scarlet and gray.

The Buckeyes 2023 starting quarterback managed at least three touchdowns in five games last season but never quite got that fourth as Ohio State had a terrific ground game to rely upon.

The Orange won the game 38-22 over Ohio at JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York. McCord ended with 354 yards on 27-of-39 passing.

He also had an interception. Starting down 6-0 after the first 15 minutes, McCord was able to right the boat and ended up 17-9 at the half before an explosive last two quarters.

Former Ohio State quarterback catches stray on Hard Knocks

Former Ohio State quarterback catches stray on Hard Knocks #GoBucks

By now every football fan has at least seen a clip of the HBO series, “Hard Knocks, and this current season of the show is following the New York Giants during the offseason. These shows provide fans some unique insight into the process of constructing a roster in the NFL.

The most recent episode released on Tuesday featured the Giants conducting pre-draft interviews. Mike Groh, the receivers coach for the Giants was leading the interview with Marvin Harrison Jr., and they were going over his performance against Wisconsin. It was pretty standard stuff, but Groh felt the needs to ask Harrison about an underthrown ball and said “I mean that’s a s— throw, right?”

In classic Harrison fashion, he took the high road and took the blame himself saying “I can make the play still,” and “I will never say anything to the quarterback — always blame it on myself.”

This clip is going viral online, but in all honestly, Kyle McCord shouldn’t feel attacked. A huge portion of these interviews is getting to know the prospect and the comments were clearly more to test Harrison and his reaction more than commentary on McCord’s ability.

The Fran Brown Era at Syracuse could see early success

With Kyle McCord’s skill and Coach Fran Brown’s vision, Syracuse football is set for a landmark season, driven by a favorable schedule and a united goal to reshape their legacy.

Syracuse football could be on the brink of a seismic shift. Taking the reins for the Orange this season is none other than Kyle McCord, the former commander of the Ohio State offense. This transfer was a headline-grabber and a shock to many. McCord’s leap to Syracuse, mixed with a schedule that seems almost handpicked for success, tees up the Orange for what could be a banner year.

A gem from the 247Sports Composite, McCord’s five-star status isn’t just for show. His pivot to Syracuse, sealed during an official campus visit, cranks up the Orange’s offensive dial. Steering the Buckeyes to an 11-1 finish last season, McCord’s stats speak volumes: 3,170 yards, 24 TDs, and a 65.8% completion rate. Numbers like these placed him in the conversation for the top of the FBS quarterback heap.

At the helm for Syracuse is Fran Brown, the newly minted head coach. Brown’s not just about X’s and O’s; his recruiting prowess and deep Northeast roots are part of his DNA.

Brown’s coaching odyssey began at Paul VI Catholic High School. He swiftly moved through the ranks at Temple, where he first showcased his knack for transforming defensive backfields and his magnetic pull in recruiting circles.

His journey with Matt Rhule from Temple to Baylor only amplified his reputation as a top-tier recruiter and a defensive strategist. Returning to Temple, this time with added responsibilities as co-defensive coordinator, Brown further cemented his status in the coaching fraternity, even as head coaching opportunities teasingly danced around the edges.

During his tenure with Greg Schiano at Rutgers, Fran Brown experienced a transformative leap forward, setting the stage for his subsequent ascent into the national spotlight at Georgia. In this high-profile role, Brown’s recruiting skills and strategic coaching brilliance reached their zenith, ultimately contributing to a resounding National Championship triumph. This period of his career reached a pinnacle with Brown being honored as the nation’s premier recruiter by 247Sports, a testament to his profound impact on the field.

Brown is considered by many as one of the nation’s premier recruiters, possessing a unique talent for forging authentic connections with high school athletes and their families.

Now, as Syracuse’s 31st head coach, Brown brings more than just a playbook and recruiting strategies. He carries a legacy of soundness, a relentless pursuit of excellence, and a deep-rooted connection to the Northeast’s football fabric.

With the absence of conference heavyweights like North Carolina, Florida State, Clemson, and Louisville from the schedule, this is a chance for Syracuse and their first-year head coach to sharpen their game without the shadow of the conference giants looming over them. Coupled with portal newcomers like McCord, Edge Fadil Diggs, and Jackson Meeks at wide receiver, this could give the Orange early success.

Going into the season with McCord’s arm, Brown’s vision, and a schedule that might as well be a golden ticket, Syracuse and Fran Brown are not just dreaming of greatness in his first year; they’re on the cusp of it and reaching for it. The stage is set, the players are ready, and the Syracuse faithful are buzzing. As Coach Brown put it during his introduction as the Orange’s head coach, “I am competitive. I need to win at everything. You can’t chew gum faster than me. I’m going to win at everything, and we’re about to go shock the country.”

Ohio State’s rival quarterback, Michigan’s JJ McCarthy makes NFL decision

Is this what you expected? #GoBucks

It will alway be remembered that Ohio State football head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] chose [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag] over [autotag]JJ McCarthy[/autotag], for obvious reasons.

McCarthy ultimately chose to attend rival Michigan, and took it personal when he played the school that passed him up during his recruitment. He was on the sidelines for three victories over the Buckeyes, and this past season led the Wolverines to a College Football Playoff national championship.

A big decision loomed in front of him, as he still had one year of eligibility remaining, but has chosen to forgo that season and enter the NFL draft. Many Buckeyes would liked to have one more shot at knocking McCarthy down, but that will now have to be at the next level.

Although he isn’t viewed as one of the top quarterback prospects in this coming draft, he will still be selected after a very impressive collegiate career.

Former transfer portal target signs with Syracuse

A former Nebraska target in the transfer portal has committed to play out east in 2024.

A former Nebraska target in the transfer portal has committed to play out east in 2024. Quarterback Kyle McCord has committed to play for the Syracuse Orange next season.

In 12 games last season, McCord led Ohio State to an 11-1 record. He threw for 3,170 yards with 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

McCord officially entered the transfer portal on December 4 after Buckeye’s head coach Ryan Day would not commit to his quarterback as the starter in the Cotton Bowl.

The former five-star recruit had visited Lincoln and shown an interest in the Cornhuskers. It’s unknown why the two sides ultimately decided to part ways, but one wonders if the recruitment of Dylan Raiola played a factor.

Syracuse will now begin the 2024 season with a new starting quarterback and head coach. Former Georgia assistant Fran Brown will be entering his first season on the job.
