REPORT: Nebraska meets with Ohio State quarterback

A recent report has Nebraska’s offensive coordinator meeting with an Ohio State quarterback.

A recent report has Nebraska’s offensive coordinator meeting with an Ohio State quarterback. Marcus Satterfield met with Buckeye QB Kyle McCord on Tuesday afternoon.

HuskerOnline‘s Steve Sipple reported that the two met at an undisclosed location, but after Satterfield met with Baylor quarterback Blake Shapen in Waco, Texas.

The five-star prospect started in all 12 games this season after appearing in 12 games over the previous two years. He threw for 3,170 yards with 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

McCord led Ohio State to an 11-1 record but struggled in his team’s loss against Michigan. He officially entered the transferred portal on December 4 after OSU head coach Ryan Day would not commit McCord as the Cotton Bowl starter.

Nebraska has met with other quarterbacks in the transfer portal including Michigan State’s Sam Leavitt and Kansas State’s Will Howard. This is a developing story. Find a photo gallery of Kyle McCord’s career below.

Ohio State football’s potential quarterback options from the transfer portal

After surprising news Monday morning that Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord is entering the transfer portal, the Buckeyes will have a new starting quarterback for the 2024 season and beyond.

McCord led the Buckeyes to an 11-1 record this season. He threw for 3,169 yards with 24 touchdowns to just six interceptions. Unfortunately, Ohio State’s 30-24 loss to Michigan ended its national championship hopes and led to McCord’s departure.

With McCord gone, the QB roster includes two former four-star recruits: Devin Brown and Lincoln Kienholz. Brown is in his second year with Ohio State and was in the running to be the starting quarterback this season before being beaten out by McCord.

Kienholz is a talented freshman for the Buckeyes with a great deal of potential, and he is an option for the starting position next year. He may get an opportunity to show what he can do coming in the Cotton Bowl against Missouri in a few weeks.

Air Noland, the highly touted five-star quarterback will join the Buckeyes’ quarterback room next year. Although starting under center for Ohio State as a true freshman would be a very tall task, Noland is another potential option with a bright future.

And then there’s the avenue that’s becoming more commonplace: bringing in a quarterback in the transfer portal. In college football today, the transfer portal has become more important than ever.

In fact, the top three contenders for the Heisman trophy this year all landed with their current team after transferring. Jayden Daniels landed at LSU after starting his career at Arizona State. Michael Penix Jr. became a superstar at Washington after injuries held him back at Indiana. Bo Nix found success at Oregon after struggling at Auburn.

Ohio State also has recent success with transfer portal quarterbacks. Justin Fields joined Ohio State after one season at Georgia and lost just two games in his two seasons for the Buckeyes.

The options for quarterbacks in the transfer portal this year are very strong and the list continues to grow. The list includes quarterbacks with multiple years of starting experience as well as young, former highly recruited guys.

Here are 10 transfer portal quarterback options Ohio State may go after.

Shocker: Ohio State football’s starting quarterback Kyle McCord enters transfer portal

Not the news anyone saw coming for the Buckeyes. #GoBucks

After Ohio State football head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] couldn’t commit to a starter at quarterback on Sunday, [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag] seemingly knew his days in Columbus were numbered.

It was a quick turnaround. The first-year Buckeye starter and former five-star prospect entered the transfer portal on Monday morning, kicking off what should be a very interesting window of NCAA “free agency.”

McCord played well this past season, throwing for 3,170 yards with 24 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. He led the team to a 11-1 record, but unfortunately threw two of his six picks against Michigan in a loss.

The ramifications of the third straight loss in “The Game” were large. Ohio State missed both a chance at a Big Ten title along with a berth in the College Football Playoff, and now McCord is moving on.

The move puts Ohio State in a very interesting position. Either Devin Brown or Lincoln Kienholz — or both — will play against Missouri in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic. Then another quarterback battle with commit Air Noland along with the incumbents looms in the spring. And don’t be surprised if Ohio State has its eyes in the transfer portal as well.

Kyle McCord enters transfer portal, which means Ohio State is targeting an elite QB

It is becoming clear that Lincoln Riley can’t waste time and must get a high-end QB of his own in the portal.

One of the really big questions at USC is whether Lincoln Riley needs to get a quarterback in the transfer portal. Miller Moss and Malachi Nelson will get some much-needed work in the Holiday Bowl against a good, tough Louisville defense, which will give Riley a chance to evaluate them heading into the 2024 season. However, can Riley afford to stand pat and think that either Moss or Nelson gives USC the very best chance to compete in 2024?

Something which has just happened at Ohio State on Monday morning should make it clear to Riley that he can’t meekly accept his current hand of cards.

Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord has entered the transfer portal. Buckeyes Wire had reported over the weekend that Ohio State was unsure who would play quarterback in the upcoming Cotton Bowl game against Missouri. McCord’s decision is part of that picture of ambiguity.

We can all put two and two together and conclude that Ryan Day seeks a quarterback upgrade in the transfer portal. If OSU is getting an upgrade, USC needs to keep pace since the Buckeyes are one of the Trojans’ two new — and central — obstacles in the Big Ten in 2024.

Lincoln Riley can’t waste any time. He needs to swing big and connect.

Breaking: Ohio State quarterback, former top New Jersey recruit Kyle McCord is in the transfer portal

Kyle McCord has entered the transfer portal.

The Monday morning opening of the transfer portal was certainly unpredictable, but few saw Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord entering the transfer portal. McCord played his high school football in Philadelphia but his residence was in New Jersey.

His father, Derek McCord, played collegiately for Rutgers. As a recruit, McCord was offered by Rutgers.

Last season, Kyle McCord threw for 3,170 passing yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions for Ohio State. In his first season as the starter for Ohio State, has led the Buckeyes to an 11-1 season and a trip to the Cotton Bowl where they will face Missouri.

A part of Ohio State’s 2021 recruiting class, Kyle McCord was a five-star recruit according to On3. ESPN ranked him as a four-star and the No. 31 recruit in the nation.

The news of  Kyle McCord’s decision to enter the transfer portal was broken by 247Sports.

It is unclear if Kyle McCord will participate in the Cotton Bowl for Ohio State – let alone if Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day would want him with the program.

The Buckeyes quarterback competition apparently isn’t over this season. #GoBucks

After starting for the majority of Ohio State football’s season, you’d think quarterback [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag]’s job would be safe heading into the Cotton Bowl against Missouri.

As Lee Corso famously says, “not so fast my friend.”

When head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] was asked about McCord’s job, he said “everyone is going to have the opportunity to compete, and get after it during bowl practice. And then when it’s time to go play in the game, we’ll figure out who should gets the reps and go from there.”

McCord beat out [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag] after a long competition that went into the first few weeks of the season, so expect him to be in the mix.

You can’t discount freshman [autotag]Lincoln Kienholz[/autotag] either, who gained some reps late in the last few games when Brown was out with an ankle injury. It’s going to be a very interesting last few weeks of the year leading up to the Cotton Bowl and beyond.

Big Ten quarterbacks ranked by Total QBR at end of the regular season

How did Big Ten quarterbacks rank against each other at the end of the regular season in Total QBR? #B1G

Well, if you can believe it, the curtain has come down on the 2023 college football regular season. We have just the conference championship games and bowl season, including the College Football Playoff.

A total of 13 weeks have flown by and and we have a almost a whole season’s worth of data points and performances on Big Ten quarterbacks to see who did the best at the position. That includes Ohio State football’s starter under center, Kyle McCord, who threw for a decent number of yards, but had two costly interceptions that went a long way toward the Buckeyes falling to Michigan for the third straight year.

Just like every other week, there were Big Ten quarterback performances besides what we saw from McCord, and we like to keep track of how they are all doing when stacking them up against one another. In fact, we’ve done it every week so far this year.

The metric we like to use more than any other is ESPN’s Total QBR rating. We find it to be a better indicator of performance because it takes into account many aspects others don’t, including the level of competition.

So what is Total QBR exactly? According to ESPN, Adjusted Total Quarterback Rating “values the quarterback on all play types on a 0-100 scale adjusted for the strength of opposing defenses faced.”

OK, we’re game.

So where are McCord and Big Ten gunslingers such as J.J. McCarthy of Michigan, Drew Allar of Penn State, Taulia Tagovailoa of Maryland and Gavin Wimsatt of Rutgers at the conclusion of the college football regular season? Believe it or not, McCord closed the gap on McCarthy as the season wore on, but how close did he come to taking that top spot?

Here’s how the order stacks up with Big Ten Total QBR as we head into conference championship week across this great nation of ours.

Ohio State football vs Michigan: Five observations halftime review

Ohio State football vs Michigan: Five observations halftime review

Welcome to halftime of the Ohio State football game, where the Buckeyes are struggling with the Michigan Wolverines and they are going into halftime with a slight deficit of 14-10.

We expected this game to be close considering Ohio State was more than a field goal underdog, but I think we all expected the Buckeyes to look a nit better, especially on offense.

Hopefully, this team can make the right halftime adjustments, but the Wolverines receiving the ball after half is certainly not ideal. TreVeyon Henderson also appears to be bumped and bruised, but lets dive into the five most noticeable issues with “The Game”

Once an Ohio State fan, an experienced J.J. McCarthy hoping to outduel friend Kyle McCord

We’ll find out on Saturday which team made the right choice in their starting quarterback. #GoBlue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Perhaps Michigan football lucked into what it currently has — a former five-star quarterback who once wanted to be a Buckeye.

J.J. McCarthy grew up in Illinois but was a fan of the scarlet and gray. In his estimation, he would follow that path, but with Ohio State targeting Kyle McCord, someone McCarthy knew well, both Michigan football and OSU ended up with the quarterbacks they wanted — even if that’s not what the Wolverines junior QB had envisioned before he ended up in Ann Arbor.

“I grew up first being an Ohio State fan. I won’t lie — I did,” McCarthy said. “But God had different plans for me and showed me the way and I’m very blessed and appreciative to be here.”

It worked out well for McCarthy, at least thus far. In his first year as a starter, in his second year with the program, he went into Columbus, a place Michigan hadn’t won in 20 years, and led the Wolverines to a 45-23 victory.

Though only completing 50% of his passes, McCarthy threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns, while running six times for 26 yards and another score.

Now that he’s gotten a real taste beyond running twice and completing one pass in the 2021 iteration of The Game, McCarthy feels like it will give him something of an advantage over McCord, who has yet to see action against his rival to the north.

“Huge — I think experience is one of the greatest edges you can have as a player,” McCarthy said. “And just going into last year that first drive just all those emotions that were creeping in, it was something I’ve never felt before. So now it’s predictable, therefore manageable, and I’ll know how to handle my emotions and get them down to where they need to be. And yeah, just say it does a lot for me, that’s for sure.”

That said, McCord is hoping to follow in McCarthy’s footsteps, outdueling the established leader of the other team in his first time playing in the rivalry.  McCarthy says he hasn’t talked to his rival friend during the season, but is looking forward to playing against him now that the two will be going up against each other.

The 2021 classmates got to know each other well on the camp circuit, and McCarthy knows from having seen McCord play all these years that he will present challenges to the Michigan defense.

“Kyle is my guy, ever since growing up and going all the satellite camps and all these Rivals, 247, all that, we were always there together,” McCarthy said. “And we just kind of meshed, had two alike personalities. And just, it’s gonna be really cool, it’s gonna be really surreal to see him out there in this environment, this game, and just going out there and wish him safety and make sure he stays healthy.

“But he’s gonna give our defense a little bit of some trouble at times, and we got to respond and be able to attack them in any way possible.”

Who will come out on top? We’ll find out on Saturday with kickoff starting at noon EST.

Watch: Ohio State football quarterback Kyle McCord gets ‘The Game’

McCord understands ‘The Game’ isn’t just a one day event

Typically the biggest face of a football team is your quarterback, and although for Ohio State football that isn’t the case, [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag] still plays a huge role for the Buckeyes.

It is officially Michigan week, it has been since the 0:00 read on Ohio Stadium following the win over Minnesota. The rivalry takes the seat to no other one in the country, regardless of which sport you are talking about.

Just go check social media, the banter between the two schools has made its annual turn for the worst.

With that said, it’s always interesting to see how players feel about the rivalry, and Adam King of WBNS TV in Columbus had a chance to sit down with McCord and ask him about “The Game.”

It’s great to see McCord reiterate what he all think, it’s not just the Saturday after Thanksgiving where the rivalry is, it’s 365 days of the year. Exactly the way it should be.
