Rams sign WR Austin Trammell, waive TE Kyle Markway

The Rams waived TE Kyle Markway and filled his roster spot by signing WR Austin Trammell

To help alleviate the absence of Van Jefferson in practice for the next few weeks, the Los Angeles Rams added some help at wide receiver. The team announced Thursday that it has signed Austin Trammell, waiving tight end Kyle Markway to make room for the new receiver.

Trammell signed with the Falcons as an undrafted free agent last year, spending most of the year on the practice squad. He was active for two games at the end of the season, but he only played special teams. He was released on June 16.

Markway was signed to the Rams’ practice squad late last year, his second stint with the team. He has never appeared in an NFL game, however.

Rams bring back TE Kyle Markway, sign him to practice squad

The Rams have brought back TE Kyle Markway for the third time, signing him to the practice squad.

The Los Angeles Rams lost tight end Jared Pinkney to the Lions this week when Detroit signed him off their practice squad and to its 53-man roster. The Rams’ tight end depth has gotten somewhat thin with Tyler Higbee doing most of the heavy lifting at the position, but they added a familiar face on Wednesday.

The Rams announced they’ve signed Kyle Markway to the practice squad, making this his third stint with the team. He was originally signed in July and waived in August, but he returned on Dec. 18 before getting waived three days later.

He hasn’t appeared in a game as a pro yet after going undrafted in 2020, and barring an injury, he’s unlikely to contribute for the Rams this season.

Browns claim TE Kyle Markway off waivers from the Rams

Markway spent most of the 2020 season on the Browns’ practice squad

The Cleveland Browns have added an old friend back to the tight end room. Per his agent, Brett Tessler, the Browns have claimed TE Kyle Markway off waivers from the Los Angeles Rams.

Markway spent most of the 2020 season on the Browns practice squad, so he knows the Kevin Stefanski offense and the culture of the team well. He signed a reserve/futures contract with Cleveland after the season but was waived following the draft. He did not last long with the Rams, who waived the South Carolina product on Tuesday.

Markway provides some competition for the No. 4 TE spot with Jordan Franks, behind Austin Hooper, David Njoku and Harrison Bryant.

Update: The Browns waived DE Romeo McKnight to make room for Markway.

Browns swap tight ends, sign Connor Davis and release Kyle Markway

Davis started college as a DE and also played OT before switching to TE

The tight end room in Berea got shaken on Friday, with a newcomer stirring into the mix. The Cleveland Browns signed free agent Connor Davis and released Kyle Markway.

Davis is a first-year player who spent most of the 2020 season on the New York Jets practice squad. He stands out at 6-foot-8 and also played in both the AAF and the XFL before joining the Jets. Davis played collegiately at Stony Brook, where he began his career as a defensive end and also played offensive tackle before converting to tight end.

Markway bounced on and off the Browns’ practice squad in 2020 as an undrafted free agent from South Carolina.

Browns sign 14 players from the practice squad to reserve/futures contracts

All but one of the practice squad members from last week signed

The Browns coaching and management must have liked what they saw on the practice fields late in the year. On Monday, the Browns signed nearly all of the active practice squad roster from the week of the AFC divisional playoff round to reserve/futures contracts.

The 14 players

S Elijah Benton (Liberty)

WR Ja’Marcus Bradley (Louisiana-Lafayette)

TE Jordan Franks (Central Florida)

CB A.J. Green (Oklahoma State)

G Cordel Iwuagwu (Texas Christian)

QB Kyle Lauletta (Richmond)

DE Cameron Malveaux (Houston)

TE Kyle Markway (South Carolina)

K Matt McCrane (Kansas State)

LB Montrel Meander (Grambling State)

C Javon Patterson (Mississippi)

FB Johnny Stanton (UNLV)

T Alex Taylor (South Carolina State)

WR Derrick Willies (Texas Tech)

The only practice squad player from last week who did not sign with the team is CB Donovan Olumba, who was signed during last week.

Players signed to a reserve/future contract can be added to an NFL team’s roster when it expands from 53 to 90 players for the offseason on the first day of the NFL’s business year. That takes place on March 17. It ties them to the Browns through that period instead of them being street free agents.

Browns sign practice squad TE Kyle Markway to a 2-year contract

Markway was elevated from the practice squad for the divisional round game

Per his agent, Brett Tessler, the Cleveland Browns have signed tight end Kyle Markway to a two-year contract to stay with the team.

It’s the first move of the offseason for the Browns after falling in the AFC divisional round. Markway was on the active roster for the game in Kansas City as a practice squad elevation, but the tight end was on the inactive player list. He did not see any action for the Browns beyond the practice field.

Markway joined the Browns in September as a free agent. He spent the rest of the 2020 season on the team’s practice squad. The South Carolina product was an undrafted free agent in 2019 who spent his rookie year on the New York Giants practice squad, with a stint in Pittsburgh as well.

Expect more of these types of signings with the season now complete.

Browns elevate 2 from practice squad for AFC divisional round game

Both are standard elevations with nobody sidelined due to COVID-19

The Cleveland Browns elevated two offensive players from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s AFC divisional round game in Kansas City. Offensive tackle Alex Taylor and tight end Kyle Markway were elevated to face the Chiefs.

Both Taylor and Markway are standard elevations from the practice squad. In recent weeks the Browns have used the COVID-19 elevation, which is different. With all the Browns players off the reserve/COVID-19 list after left guard Joel Bitonio was activated on Friday, there is no need for those this week.

The elevations come at positions where the Browns have some injury concerns. Right tackle Jack Conklin is questionable with a knee/hamstring injury, and normal backup tackle Chris Hubbard is on injured reserve. That leaves only Kendall Lamm in reserve prior to elevating Taylor. Two tight ends, David Njoku and Stephen Carlson, are also questionable for Sunday’s game.

Browns sign TE Kyle Markway to the practice squad

The Browns still have one opening on the practice squad

The Cleveland Browns have added tight end Kyle Markway to the team’s practice squad. The Browns announced the signing on Monday after Markway’s name popped up on social media as visiting with the team over the Week 2 weekend.

Markway is in his second NFL season. Originally an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina, the 6-4, 247-pounder spent most of the 2019 season on the New York Giants practice squad. He also has spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He is the only tight end on the 15-man practice squad. The Browns do have one more opening if they choose to sign another player.

Steelers bolster TE depth by signing Kyle Markway

The Steelers have signed yet another tight end.

According to agent Brett Tressler, the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed tight end Kyle Markway to a one-year contract. The Steelers hard Markway in for a workout earlier in the week.

Markway was an undrafted free agent in 2019 signed originally by the New York Giants. According to his agent, Markway lost out due to numbers with the Giants and hopes to hand on with the Steelers.

On paper, Markway is the ideal Steelers tight end prospect. He’s a smart, high-character guy who offers very little in the passing attack but is a strong blocker.

Markway joins Vance McDonald, Eric Ebron, Zach Gentry, Kevin Rader and Dax Raymond on the Steelers tight end depth chart.

Pittsburgh Steelers bring in 6’4 Gamecock TE for tryout

The Pittsburgh Steelers tried out a tight end from South Carolina on Wednesday.

Per usual during training camp, the Pittsburgh Steelers are a revolving door of tryouts. A lineman here, a wide receiver there.

On Wednesday, the Steelers brought in Kyle Markway, a 6’4 tight end out of South Carolina. In his final season as a Gamecock, Markway ranked third on the team with 31 receptions for 349 yards and two scores.

What does this mean? In the long term, probably nothing. As common as you and I waking up and going to sleep, it’s just something NFL teams do to evaluate free agents in the offseason.

In the interim, the Steelers need bodies at camp. Steelers tight end Dax Raymond came out of practice on Tuesday with an ankle injury that Tomlin said Wednesday seems to be “short term”.
