Watch: Notre Dame’s defense forces a safety against Navy

Safety!!!

The Irish offense hasn’t been at it’s best against the Midshipmen, but after a fantastic punt by Jay Bramblett that put Navy on the the 1-yard line, the Notre Dame defense turned up the pressure.

After stuffing a first down run, defensive tackle Kurt Hinish made yet another big play from the middle of the Irish defensive line. The senior quickly was in the backfield of Navy’s and forced quarterback Xavier Arline into a bad pitch. Even though Arline did end up jumping back on the fumble, it was in the end zone and resulted in points for the Irish. It’s a slugfest type game between Navy and Notre Dame, but the Irish hold onto a 19-6 lead which seems larger than it actually is.

Notre Dame vs. Navy: First-Quarter Analysis

We have a game.

Some might have thought Notre Dame would just cruise to victory over Navy. If that’s going to happen, we haven’t seen it yet. In fact, the Midshipmen are showing they won’t just be pushed around at Notre Dame Stadium. Consequently, they have a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.

Neither team picked up a first down on the game’s first three possessions. On the fourth possession, the Midshipmen showed the first signs of life when they converted on a fourth-and-1, which was followed by a 32-yard gain from Jayden Umbarger on a reverse pitch. Four plays later, Tai Lavatai was successful at converting a fourth-and-1 in the red zone, but he then was sacked on back-to-back plays by Kurt Hinish and Jordan Botelho. Even after that disaster for the Midshipmen, who burned all three of their first-half timeouts on the drive, Bijan Nichols kicked a 49-yard field goal to open the game’s scoring.

The Irish sent their offense back onto the field, and things finally got moving, at least for a bit. After a couple of runs from Kyren Williams, Coan hit Deion Colzie for a 31-yard completion to the Navy 25-yard line. Though the Irish got into the red zone over the next three plays, they opted to go for it on fourth down. Coan was sacked by John Marshall, and the Irish turned it over on downs.

Hopefully, this is just a slow start.

The five plays that loomed large in Notre Dame’s 31-16 win over USC

These five had huge impacts on the present and future of Irish football

During the course of every football game, there are plays that stand out that make or break a team. Three to five seconds every game that can completely change the outcome. For Notre Dame and their 31-16 win over visiting USC, it was some good, and a little bad. Find out which five plays decided Notre Dame’s win over the Trojans.

Four Changes Notre Dame should make following the bye week

Which changes would you make this bye week?

The first “half” of the season is over and this week the Irish will surely work hard and do some self-scouting. Head coach Brian Kelly has a big time job to do, there are some holes that need to be fixed and now is the time to address them. Let’s take a look at a few changes the Irish make before the hit the field against USC on October 23rd in South Bend.

Notre Dame to miss two big time contributors against Cincinnati

It would have been nice for these two to be suited up today

The Irish have been able to stay fairly healthy but this afternoon they announced they will be without two of their starters for their Top-10 matchup against Cincinnati. Each side of the ball will be missing a starter, as defensive tackle Kurt Hinish and offensive tackle Tosh Baker will both miss the very important contest.

It is unfortunate for the Irish, especially on the offense, as the offensive line continues to take hits and has not really had the chance to gel as a unit this fall. According to the most recent depth chart, Michael Carmody should be the fill in for Baker, as they were bracketed as starters. You have to expect that Carmody will be tested by the Bearcats.

Report: Notre Dame will be without a key starter today against Wisconsin

Report: Notre Dame will be without a key starter today against Wisconsin

No. 12 Notre Dame will be without nose tackle Kurt Hinish today when they take on No. 18 Wisconsin, according to a report from IrishIllustrated’s Tim Prister.

Hinish is a key member of Notre Dame’s defensive front and run defense. The news comes after a mid-week update pointed at Hinish’s status surprisingly being in question for today’s game.

The veteran nose tackle has recorded 5 tackles, 1 tackle-for-loss and 1 sack so far this year.

His reported absence will likely see junior Jacob Lacey and sophomore Aidan Keanaaina share starter reps up front.

We now await news about whether the Fighting Irish will also be without left tackle Michael Carmody when the game kicks off in a few hours.

Notre Dame likely without Hinish vs. Wisconsin

Not ideal.

Rumors have swirled this week surrounding the health of veteran Notre Dame nose tackle Kurt Hinish to the point that Brian Kelly was asked about his availability on Thursday.  Despite being listed atop the depth chart this week veteran Notre Dame reporter Tim Prister is hearing that Hinish won’t be able to play against Wisconsin.

Prister released the following tweet Saturday morning:

This is obviously a significant loss no matter who you’re playing but with it being such a strong running team like Wisconsin the loss is only more significant.

We’ll have more on this and everything else in regards to Notre Dame and Wisconsin.

The Fighting Irish are dealing with injury concerns

Despite nothing appearing out of the ordinary on the depth chart released by Notre Dame earlier this week, veteran nose guard Kurt Hinish’s status for Saturday’s game is all of a sudden in doubt.

In Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly’s press conference earlier this week, it was more of what he didn’t say than what he did explicitly lay out regarding the availability of the Fighting Irish starter.

A question during Thursday’s press conference was directly pointed at Hinish: “There’s been some speculation about Kurt Hinish’s health, if you could address that?”

Kelly declined to give any specifics on the senior’s availability but did make it clear they had already made a decision.

“The only guy we haven’t made a decision yet on is Michael Carmody,” Kelly said. “We had some chances to get some reps yesterday. We’ll need to evaluate him today and tomorrow. I would say that’s going to come down to a game-day decision.”

Hinish has started in all three games for Notre Dame thus far, and is listed as the starting nose tackle on the defensive line.

It’s certainly a story to monitor leading up to Saturday’s 11 a.m. CT kickoff between Wisconsin and Notre Dame.

Late injury report addition for Notre Dame ahead of Wisconsin?

A new potential problem for Notre Dame’s defensive this weekend?

Everything appeared normal with veteran nose guard Kurt Hinish following last week’s 27-13 Notre Dame victory over Purdue.  Hinish was awarded the game ball by Brian Kelly and seemed primed for the showdown with Wisconsin this weekend.

But is he?

The long story made short is we don’t have confirmation either way after hearing Brian Kelly speak on Thursday.  At first he was asked about if there had been any changes to the depth chart that was released on Monday of this week.

“The only guy we haven’t made a decision yet on is Michael Carmody,” Kelly said. “We had some chances to get some reps yesterday. We’ll need to evaluate him today and tomorrow. I would say that’s going to come down to a game-day decision.”

Rumors have swirled around campus this week about a possible question regarding the availability of Hinish, a mainstay on Notre Dame’s defensive line which will obviously have its hands full against Wisconsin’s powerful running game this weekend.  When asked about Hinish specifically Kelly offered the following:

“There’s always going to be guys that are questionable during the week that have lingering injuries from the week before,” Kelly said. “But we don’t rule anybody out unless they’re clear that they are not going to play. So, as I said, I think the only guy right now that clearly is not playing is the guys that we told you that were unavailable earlier in the week. Other than that, some of these are gametime decisions. I think each week you’ll find that there’s going to be some rumors and there’s going to be some speculation as to some guys may be available or unavailable. I’ll let you guys know if there’s somebody definitely not available leading into the game, but I think there’s always going to be a little bit of that from week to week.”

So what did Kelly say about Hinish or was it perhaps what he didn’t say?

Kelly stated that Carmody is the only player that a decision is yet to be made on but didn’t come out and say that Hinish was going to be able to go versus the Badgers, either.

Stay tuned as this is suddenly a big story to keep an eye on heading up to the 12:00 p.m. ET kickoff between Notre Dame and Wisconsin this Saturday.
