Notre Dame freshmen lineman receive massive praise

A couple of freshmen aren’t acting like freshmen so far this spring.

There are some positions you see as true freshmen who are able to step on the field and be difference makers immediately.

Usually, that doesn’t include the offensive line simply because the time in a college training program hasn’t taken form quite yet and physically players are often overmatched strength-wise.

Known by many as “O-Line U”, Notre Dame brought in another stellar recruiting class on their offense front in 2021.  A pair of those players, Blake Fisher and Rocco Spindler, received massive praise from nose guard Kurt Hinish who battles against the offensive line each practice.

Speaking on Fisher and Spindler specifically Saturday, Hinish offered the following:

“Rocco Spindler and Blake Fisher are damn good.  They’re the best two freshman offensive linemen I’ve gone against.  They’re grown men playing against us.” – Kurt Hinish

By no means does that guarantee a starting spot for either by the time September comes around, but it’s quite the praise for a couple of freshmen who have only ten collegiate practices under their belts to date.

How can Notre Dame make a Playoff run in ‘21? ESPN answers

Is there one answer to this question as to how Notre Dame makes it back to play in a big time bowl game?

The Irish have made the College Football Playoffs two of the last three years and going into the 2021 season, it might be a more difficult task to make it three of the last four. There is always hope going into a season, after all, in college football anything can happen.

Recently, the ESPN staff looked at their way-too-early top 25 teams and how the cards need to fall for them to make the CFP. In Notre Dame’s case, they “are losing quite a bit on offense and defense, so if they’re going to make it back to the playoff or a New Year’s Six bowl, the first thing that must happen is they need to find their quarterback early,” said Tom VanHaaren.

What’s interesting about VanHaaren’s assessment of the position is that he doesn’t mention Wisconsin transfer Jack Coan, naming Drew Pyne and Tyler Buchner as his front runners. That doesn’t mean that Coan is not in the mix for the starting job, maybe VanHaaren just forgot about him. Either way he say’s “the coaches need to stabilize that position.” That’s saying it lightly.

Over on the defensive side of the ball, VanHaaren noted that new coordinator Marcus Freeman will need “Kyle Hamilton, Kurt Hinish and Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa, among some other veterans on defense, to be its best players.” Losing a high end player like linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and others will definitely hurt, but the talent is there for other players to step up.

When looking at the whole picture for VanHaaren, it’s probably not going to be what Notre Dame fans want to hear “with so much change on the roster and the staff, Notre Dame must have everything fall into place to make it back to where it was this season.” Hopefully everything does fall into place and we see Brian Kelly leading his team to a bowl game on or around New Year’s Day.

Sunday saw reports that Notre Dame defensive lineman Kurt Hinish would be returning for a fifth year. With the amount of talent leaving for the NFL Draft or in the transfer portal it was some much needed good news for the Irish.

Now on Monday we don’t so much have any further Hinish news as there isn’t a lot to say, but we do have an epic announcement video from the Pittsburgh product, featuring the faces of some of the biggest names in Notre Dame football.

I could sit and tease you about it for six more minutes or I could just get to the part where actually watch the video, so let’s do just that.

Great use of a great scene from one of the better movies of the last decade.

Hinish doesn’t answer all of Notre Dame’s questions entering next year but the Irish are certainly better off with him coming back than the alternative.

Notre Dame nose guard to return for fifth season with Irish

A day after its season came to an end via 31-14 defeat to No. 1 Alabama in the Rose Bowl, Notre Dame received a bit of good news as one of their better defensive players has decided to stick around for a fifth season.

Nose guard Kurt Hinish will take advantage of the NCAA’s COVID-19 and return to play on Notre Dame’s defensive line in 2021 according to Eric Hansen of NDInsider.

Since Hinish’s eligibility was set to expire under normal circumstances, the COVID rule means he will not count against the NCAA scholarship limit of 85 next season.

The Pittsburgh native recorded 19 tackles this season, 7.5 of which were for a loss. He also had two quarterback sacks.

Kicker Jonathan Doerer appears to be the other strong candidate that could take advantage of the rule and return in 2021 as well as the likes of Ian Book, Liam Eichenberg, and several others appear to be done playing football at Notre Dame.

Only eight months and two days until Notre Dame travels to Tallahassee to open the 2021 season at Florida State.

Notre Dame notes: Kelly’s Monday presser focuses on red zone, travel, and more

The highlights of Brian Kelly’s Monday meeting with the press include red zone issues, wide receiver rotation, Jahmir Smith leaving and more.

The Irish have been in a unique situation this season, they have yet to hit the road for a game this season. When their trip to Wake Forest was reschedule due to a rash of Irish football team members testing positive for COVID-19, the schedule just worked out that way. Well, Kelly addressed his team traveling to Pittsburgh this weekend, the issues in the red zone, a player leaving the program and more in his regularly scheduled Monday afternoon press conference. Here are some of the big topics Kelly touched on today.

-The red zone offense needs to be better as Kelly said “we’ve got to be better in that area moving forward.” That’s a huge understatement.

-Going to Pitt this weekend will be treated like a home game on Friday. The team will be very careful during their travels, no team meals, eating at Heinz Field concourses and Kelly wants to “create an atmosphere where we can control it the best we can.”

-Kelly might have pinpointed some issues with the wide receivers because “it has been a revolving door” at the position. With new faces and others working back from injuries, the Irish head coach thinks they may have pushed them too hard in practice. It’s obviously a “work in progress” as he stated.

-Kelly pointed out three players (Isaiah Foskey, Jack Kiser and Joe Wilkins) that need to play more. After Saturday’s win against Louisville, he had notes that said “how do we get them involved more.”

-Running back Jahmir Smith has left the team, Kelly said “he’s decided at this time he is not going to be playing football.”

-Kurt Hinish has been great this year and Kelly attributed it to a few factors, but mainly his high football IQ. “He (Hinish) knows what they’re (the offense) is trying to do scheme wise.”

-On the offense’s strengths and weakness, Kelly said “right now we’re so much better running it than throwing it. I want people to respect our ability to throw it.” The offense will keep at it, “we’re going to push the ball vertically down the field, we’re going to have to be better at it.” He knows there are some issues in “attacking defenses down the field in our passing game, were not there yet. We have to get going.”

-On Pitt’s defense: “game wreckers on defense, they’ll play physical and they’re well coached.”

Notre Dame’s Hinish remembers high school teammate lost to COVID

Notre Dame defensive tackle Kurt Hinish took to Twitter on Tuesday night to remember his high school teammate, Jamain Stephens.

Yesterday brought awful news when word of the death of California University of Pennsylvania football player Jamain Stephens to complications from COVID-19 was announced.

Before playing football at California (Pennsylvania), Stephens starred at Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh where he was teammates with current Notre Dame defensive tackle Kurt Hinish.

Hinish took to Twitter on Tuesday night to remember his friend and former teammate.
