Giants’ Isaiah Wilson emerges as RT option following Matt Peart injury

New York Giants head coach Joe Judge says Isaiah Wilson is one of a number of options at right tackle following Matt Peart’s torn ACL.

The New York Giants announced on Monday that offensive tackle Matt Peart suffered a torn ACL in Week 16 and has been lost for the season.

Peart, who was filling in for veteran Nate Solder (Reserve/COVID-19), took just 11 snaps against the Philadelphia Eagles before being injured. He was then replaced by Korey Cunningham.

“To see his season end the way it is with the ACL and how he was really plugging forward — one thing about Matt is he’s a really, really good team player and the guys really like him and respect the way he works and goes out there every day and prepares and challenges and competes. You hate seeing any player get hurt, you hate seeing guys who truly love the game and love their team being injured,” head coach Joe Judge told reporters.

“Obviously, he’s still developing in his position, there are a lot of things he can build on and grow on and can improve on, but his number one priority right now is just to get healthy.”

With Peart out and Solder still dealing with COVID-19, the Giants may have to adjust their offensive line again in Week 17. And although Cunningham is the favorite to start at right tackle if Solder can’t go, the team does have other options.

One mentioned by Judge is practice squad offensive lineman Isaiah Wilson, who was signed earlier this year and elevated as a COVID replacement last Sunday. However, Wilson was the only active player on the team who didn’t see any snaps.

“We’ll go through the week. I think he obviously is an option for us possibly at tackle along with some other players, but really he’s been plugging away in here and he’s made some progress. We’ve flexed him between guard and tackle through some drill and team work,” Judge said. “As we go through this week, we’ll look at a number of guys on our practice squad in terms of flexing them up as who can be that next tackle up for the game.”

Wilson, a first-round pick of the Tennessee Titans in the 2020 NFL draft, has had a plethora of issues over his first two seasons. He’s had multiple run-ins with law enforcement, was suspended by the Titans for violating team rules, traded to the Miami Dolphins and then released after just three days due to missing a pair of workouts.

None of those issues have resurfaced since Wilson joined the Giants. He’s been at all but one practice, appears to be working hard and losing weight, and has drawn rave reviews from his coaches and his teammates. And although he’s viewed more as a developmental project, Wilson may be thrust into live action out of sheer necessity.

Giants place Andrew Thomas, C.J. Board on injured reserve

The New York Giants have placed OT Andrew Thomas and WR C.J. Board on injured reserve and made a flurry of other roster moves.

The New York Giants will be without starting left tackle Andrew Thomas for at least three weeks after he was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday.

Thomas, who had already been dealing with a foot injury, got rolled up on during Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He left the game and was later diagnosed with an ankle injury on the opposite leg of his foot injury.

In addition to Thomas landing on IR, the Giants also placed starting kick returner C.J. Board on injured reserve after he suffered a fracture forearm in the same game.

Thomas and Board become the latest in a long, long line of Giants landing on IR or missing significant time due to injury.

Replacing Thomas and Board on the 53-man roster are wide receiver Dante Pettis and offensive lineman Korey Cunningham, each of whom were signed off the practice squad.

Both Pettis and Cunningham had been elevated last week and made their on-field regular season debut.

Meanwhile, the Giants terminated the practice squad contracts of tight end Jake Hausmann and guard Cole Banwart.

With several spots open on the practice squad as a result of the roster shuffle, the Giants also officially signed linebacker Benardrick McKinney, wide receiver Travis Toivonen and offensive tackle Derrick Kelly to the reserve unit.

Giants protect QB Brian Lewerke, three others

The New York Giants have protected quarterback Brian Lewerke and three other members of the practice squad in Week 6.

The New York Giants announced their practice squad protections ahead of a Week 6 game with the Los Angeles Rams and, to the surprise of no one, quarterback Brian Lewerke was one of the four.

The 24-year-old Lewerke, who was originally signed in mid-August, is an important piece for the Giants this week.

Starting quarterback Daniel Jones is likely to miss Sunday’s game with a concussion and Mike Glennon is the only other quarterback on the active roster. In the event Jones is inactive, Lewerke will be elevated on gameday and serve as QB2. Punter Riley Dixon will serve as the emergency QB3.

In addition to Lewerke, the Giants also protected offensive lineman Korey Cunningham, defensive tackle David Moa and wide receiver Dante Pettis.

Pettis was a second-time addition to the protection list a week ago, while Cunningham and Moa had all been protected previously. For Cunningham, he has now been protected four weeks in a row. Moa has been protected in all six weeks this season.

Given the Giants’ injuries at wide receiver, it’s likely that Pettis will join Lewerke as a gameday elevation.

The New York Giants announced their practice squad protections ahead of a Week 5 game with the Dallas Cowboys and once again, offensive lineman Jonotthan Harrison is among them.

In fact, the Giants’ four practice squad protections are identical to last week.

In addition to Harrison, the Giants also protected offensive lineman Korey Cunningham, defensive tackle David Moa and wide receiver Dante Pettis.

Harrison and Pettis were first-time additions to the protection list a week ago, while Cunningham and Moa had all been protection previously. For Cunningham, he has now been protected three weeks in a row. Moa has been protected in all five weeks this season.

Interestingly, only Harrison was elevated a week ago and after back-to-back weeks of being added to the gameday roster, his available status has expired. If the Giants wish to elevate him again on Sunday against the Cowboys, they will have to sign him from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

The New York Giants announced their practice squad protections ahead of a Week 4 game with the New Orleans Saints and for the first time, wide receiver Dante Pettis is among them.

Previously, the Giants had been regularly protecting wide receiver/kick returner C.J. Board, but he was signed to the 53-man roster last week.

With Sterling Shepard (hamstring), Darius Slayton (hamstring) and Kenny Golladay (hip) all hurting, it makes sense that Pettis would not only be protected but be potentially activated come Sunday.

In addition to Pettis, the Giants also protected offensive linemen Korey Cunningham and Jonotthan Harrison, and defensive tackle David Moa.

Harrison, who was activated last Sunday, is a first-time protection. For Cunningham, it’s his second consecutive week being protected, while this is the fourth week in a row the Giants have protected Moa.

Giants re-sign Nate Ebner, shuffle practice squad

The New York Giants have re-signed special teams ace Nate Ebner as part of a series of transactions.

The New York Giants made the highly anticipated move of re-signing special teams ace Nate Ebner on Tuesday, which came alongside a number of other transactions.

“He’s a guy that’s very locked in and focused. He was a captain last year and is a great team leader. This team, what he’s helping build is very important for him and while I don’t speak for anyone else, I don’t mind echoing that for Nate because I know I can speak very directly and honestly. But look, he’s a very important part of this team and we look forward to getting him back,” head coach Joe Judge said in May.

[lawrence-related id=674210,674213,674215]

In addition to adding Ebner back to the 53-man roster, the Giants also terminated the contract of wide receiver C.J. Board before immediately signing him to the practice squad.

Meanwhile, the Giants officially terminated the contract of linebacker Todd Davis, who had announced his retirement last month. They also waived wide receiver Austin Mack with an injury settlement, clearing additional salary cap space in the process.

Finally, the team signed offensive tackle Korey Cunningham to their practice squad. In order to make room for he and Board, defensive back Jordyn Peters and guard Kenny Wiggins were released.

5 biggest holes on the Patriots’ roster ahead of training camp

The Patriots’ league-leading opt-outs have left the already slim roster with many more questions.

Saying that 2020 will be a difficult year for the New England Patriots is an enormous understatement.

Rewinding to the middle of March — Tom Brady’s departure was the biggest blow the team took in a long time. The Patriots’ Hall of Fame quarterback that thrived for two decades jolted down to Tampa Bay to sign with the Buccaneers. New England’s best replacement option at the time was second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham and the salary-cap space was nearly nonexistent.

Fast-forwarding to the beginning of August — the quarterback position is an afterthought and the coronavirus pandemic began to really take its toll on the NFL. Cam Newton is the quarterback, which is good, but the team has an league-high eight opt-outs that includes Dont’a Hightower and Patrick Chung. But hey, at least the Patriots have gained a significant boost in cap space since March.

Here are the five biggest holes the Patriots have ahead of the start of training camp, which is a mess in itself. Hint hint — quarterback didn’t even touch this list.

The linebacker position is by far the biggest hole on the roster. New England went from one of the best linebacker corps in the league to potentially one of the worst over the offseason. Jamie Collins, Kyle Van Noy and Elandon Roberts took their talents elsewhere in free agency. Dont’a Hightower opted-out and it’ll leave Bill Belichick with some serious work to put in.

It is important to keep in mind that this is a fluid situation and the Patriots do have cap space to bring in talented players. But, the talent on the roster currently consists of rookies Josh Uche and Anfernee Jennings, Ja’Whaun Bentley, John Simon, Chase Winovich and Brandon Copeland primarily. Bentley, Simon and Winovich have the most experience with the Patriots’ system and Copeland will bring a solid player experience-wise.

Training camp will tell the tale on which players thrive and claim starting roles, but this group will have to run off the collective unit and not individual stardom.
