Looking at Texas’ path to the best cornerback class in 2024

Texas leads for three cornerbacks ranked inside the Top 70 overall recruits.

Texas cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph has the chance to build an historic cornerback class on the Forty Acres. He’s off to a good start.

After the Longhorns’ first major recruiting weekend of June, Joseph had a commitment from four-star cornerback Santana Wilson. The Arizona cornerback comes from an NFL bloodline, but he appears to be faster than his dad, Adrian Wilson.

Santana might only be the beginning of the fun for the Longhorns cornerback class. Texas is trending for the No. 22 overall player and No. 2 cornerback in Kobe Black. The team also leads for the No. 46 player and No. 5 cornerback Selman Bridges as well as No. 67 player and No. 8 cornerback Corian Gipson.

Here’s a look at where Texas stands with all three of the premier cornerbacks according to the On3 recruiting prediction machine.

Texas has a chance to seal the deal with five-star CB Kobe Black

Texas reportedly has a chance to secure a commitment from one of the highest ranked players in the country soon.

Texas is in the mix for a handful of five-star players in the 2024 recruiting class and according to a report by 247Sports they have a chance to secure a commitment from one of them soon.

Five-star cornerback Kobe Black is the five-star in question here as 247Sports‘ Hudson Standish reported that the Longhorns could possibly land Black as soon as this weekend.

Former teammates Jelani McDonald and Tre Wisner have been relentlessly recruiting Black to Texas, and even outside of those connections the CenTex defensive back has always been extremely high on Texas. One source I spoke to felt like Texas led heading into the weekend and has a serious chance to shut the door in this recruitment in a similar manner to how they did in 2023 with Derek Williams.

Black ranks as the No. 23 player in the country, No. 3 cornerback, and the No. 8 player in the state of Texas according to 247Sports composite. Programs such as Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and LSU among others have been pushing hard in his recruitment.

Visit photos and reactions from blue-chip recruits after OV weekend in Eugene

A handful of 5-stars and even more high-end 4-stars were in Eugene for official and unofficial visits this weekend. Check out their visit photos and reactions.

The official visits ramped up for the Oregon Ducks over the past week.

While the first weekend in June saw guys like 4-star RB Christian Clark, 4-star LB Dylan Williams, and 4-star CB Aaron Scott take a trip out to Eugene to see Dan Lanning and the Ducks, we only saw the heat get turned up this past week at Autzen Stadium.

Guys like 5-star EDGE Elijah Rushing, 5-star LB Justin Williams, and 5-star CB Kobe Black all made their way out to Oregon for official or unofficial visits, with 4-stars like RB Nathaniel Frazier and WR Gatlin Bair doing the same.

While a ton of focus was on the guys Oregon wants to bring into the fold, we also saw a ton of current Duck commits come back home for their OVs as well. That list of players included 4-star DL Xadavien Sims, 4-star S Aaron Flowers, 3-star QB Luke Moga, and 3-star TE Jackson Ford.

As you would expect, the visit photos were plenty, and the reactions were positive. Here is a mix of what recruits are saying after the weekend in Eugene:

Where Oklahoma’s 2024 5-Star targets landed in the latest On3 rankings update

Where did Oklahoma’s 2024 five-star targets land in the latest rankings update from On3?

The Sooners are in the midst of their biggest month on the recruiting trail. Last weekend they hosted five-star defensive lineman Williams Nwaneri and a number of other prospects on an official visit. The process doesn’t slow down for Brent Venables and his staff this weekend with the Champ U BBQ.

At this year’s Champ U, the Sooners are hosting three of On3’s five-stars: David Stone, Terry Bussey and Dominick McKinley.

The Sooners are hoping their efforts can help them build upon what was a top-five recruiting class in 2023. If they’re able to land Stone and another five-star player, it will be a great start. But they’ve got to hit these official visits out of the park this weekend in Norman.

As the Oklahoma Sooners put their best foot forward for their highly regarded prospects this weekend, let’s take a look at where the Sooners’ five-star targets landed in On3’s most recent rankings update.

Texas 5-star 2024 cornerback schedules Ohio State official visit

The Buckeyes will get their shot next week #GoBucks

When [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] was in the conversation for DBU, they constantly brought in high-level cornerback recruits.

The Buckeyes are starting to get back to that. In their 2023 class two top-100 players signed, Calvin Simpson-Hunt and Jermaine Mathews. Head coach Ryan Day and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles want to keep that momentum going with the 2024 cycle.

Texas cornerback [autotag]Kobe Black[/autotag] is one of those players who could keep the good times going. The 6-foot, 2-inch and 188 pound defender has scheduled an official visit to Columbus next week.

Black is viewed as one of the best players in the country, regardless of position, checking in as the 3rd ranked corner and 23rd overall player in the 2024 class according to the 247Sports composite.

It’s hard to get a read on where Black will end up, but Ohio State getting one of his official visits will help their cause.

Oklahoma Sooners to host a number of big names June 8-11

Oklahoma will look to turn up the heat on their 2024 recruiting as they host a number of prospects for official visits this weekend.

Recruiting has hit its zenith as the June has rolled around, and prospects across the 2024 class can take official visits. Oklahoma has a number of prospects expected to visit during the month, and the program’s signature ChampU BBQ is the headline event.

While this weekend’s official visitors will be a week early, June recruiting visits are where teams begin to separate themselves. Oklahoma will aim to start the recruiting month by knocking this first weekend of officials out of the park. Here is who is expected in Norman in this weekend.

  • Four-star OL [autotag]Grant Brix[/autotag]

  • Four-star OL [autotag]Jason Zandamela[/autotag]

  • Four-star OL [autotag]Eddy Pierre-Louis[/autotag]

  • Four-star OL [autotag]Weston Davis[/autotag]

  • Four-star DB [autotag]Marcelles Williams[/autotag]

  • Five-star DL [autotag]Williams Nwaneri[/autotag]
  • Five-Star CB [autotag]Kobe Black[/autotag]
  • Four-star CB [autotag]Eli Bowen[/autotag]
  • Three-star Edge [autotag]Caleb Redd[/autotag]

  • Four-star OL [autotag]Eugene Brooks[/autotag]
  • Four-star WR [autotag]Zion Ragins[/autotag]
  • Four-star QB [autotag]Michael Hawkins[/autotag] (committed)

There’s a great deal of talent coming to Norman this weekend, headlined by five-star prospects Williams Nwaneri and Kobe Black. The Sooners have been the projected leader for Nwaneri, who hails from the Kansas City area, but this is a huge weekend for Brent Venables and his staff to close the deal. Georgia, Oregon, Tennessee and Missouri are serious names to watch.

Black’s recruitment is more contentious at this point, but given the success Jay Valai has had over the last two recruiting cycles, I wouldn’t count out the Sooners.

The Sooners also welcome fellow blue-chip defensive backs Eli Bowen and Marcelles Williams. Oklahoma leads for Bowen based on recruiting projections. The Sooners are hoping to pry Williams from West Coast schools USC and UCLA.

Oklahoma’s also is hosting five offensive linemen over the weekend, which provides them a good opportunity to spend time with the staff, namely Bill Bedenbaugh, but also each other. Chemistry is a huge factor in offensive line play. Spending time with offensive linemen on campus and those the Sooners are pursuing could create a further comfort level with Oklahoma.

This is a big weekend to kick start Oklahoma’s June recruiting efforts.
