Report: Warriors assistant Mike Brown interviewing for New York Knicks head coaching job

The New York Knicks are interviewing Golden State Warriors associate head coach Mike Brown for their head coaching opening.

Joining the Golden State Warriors, the New York Knicks won’t be finishing out the remainder of the 2019-20 season in Orlando. With an early jumpstart on the offseason, the Knicks can turn their attention to their current head coaching vacancy. New Knicks President Leon Rose will be in charge of finding a replacement for David Fizdale on the sidelines.

As the Knicks’ coaching carousel heats up, a bevy of names have surfaced as potential candidates, including Golden State’s associate head coach Mike Brown. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Knicks are interviewing Brown for their head coaching vacancy. Ian Begley of SNY confirmed The Athletic’s report.

Prior to joining Golden State, Brown has head coaching experience with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers. In eight seasons as a head coach, Brown has a 347-216 (.616%) record as a head coach. In 2009, Brown earned the NBA’s Coach of the Year honor. With LeBron James in his fourth season, Brown helped lead the Cavaliers to the Finals against the San Antonio Spurs in 2007.

Brown filled in as Golden State’s acting head coach when Steve Kerr missed time due to back issues. With Kerr out, Brown led the Warriors to a 12-0 run through the 2017 playoffs. Brown’s been apart of Golden State’s coaching staff for a pair of championships. Since 2015, Alvin Gentry and Luke Walton have left Kerr’s coaching staff for head coaching positions.

Brown joins a long list of reported candidates for the Knicks, including Tom Thibodeau, former Brooklyn Nets coach Kenny Atkinson, Dallas assistant Jamahl Mosley, San Antonio assistants Becky Hammon and Will Hardy, 76ers assistant Ime Udoka and others.

“I said to myself, you’re here. Let’s make the best of it. Give it all you got. Don’t leave nothing in the tank. And then you can sleep at night,” Hardaway said. “That’s what I did. It does f–k with you mentally because it’s just — the Garden, the mystique of the Garden. You got Spike Lee on the sideline, you got all these stars, and they want to win so badly, and we weren’t winning. And I was a part of that negative tradition of the Knicks haven’t won in a while. And that bothered me too, because I felt like those fans out of all the fans in the NBA deserve to win. They’re loyal.”

Prediction

Hornets 101, Knicks 99

Moneyline (ML)

The HORNETS (+110) were blasted in Indiana by a 119-80 score Tuesday, and now they turn around and welcome the Knicks (-134) to town. New York could be the elixir for Charlotte’s ills. The Hornets are 2-0 SU against the Knicks this season, including a 97-92 win Jan. 28 in the most recent meeting.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Hornets to win returns a profit of $11.10.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Take the HORNETS (+1.5, -106) as short dogs, especially since they’re perfect vs. the Knicks (-1.5, -115) this season. While New York is 10-4-1 ATS in the past 15 games overall, and Charlotte is 3-7 ATS in the past 10 games overall, back the Hornets. They have owned the Knicks this season, and really, New York is the only team they have been able to beat on a regular basis.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 206.5 (-121), which has cashed consistently for both sides lately. The Under is 5-1 in the past six as a favorite for the Knicks, while going 6-2 in their past eight as a road fave. The Under is also a perfect 5-0 in the past five for the Hornets, while hitting in five straight as an underdog.

Knicks at Rockets: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 9:00 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Rockets 122, Knicks 104

Moneyline (ML)

The Rockets (-1250) are a slam-dunk play to win against the banged-up, skidding Knicks (+725). They won the first meeting 120-96, and there is little reason to believe they won’t dominate again, you cannot risk 12 and a half times your potential return. AVOID because betting $1,250 to earn $100 for the Rockets to win outright is way too risky of a play for little return.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The ROCKETS (-14.5, -110) are 7-2 ATS in the past nine games overall, while going 5-1 ATS in the past six at home against teams with a losing road mark. The Knicks (+14.5, -110) have dropped seven in a row straight-up in this series, and they’re 7-17 ATS in the past 24 meetings overall.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 229.5 (-115) is the way to go in this battle. While yes, the over is 3-0-1 in the past four meetings in Houston, and 6-2-1 in the past nine overall, that can mostly be discounted. Lately, it’s been about the under for both of these teams. The under is 5-1 in the past six for Houston, and 5-2 in their past seven at home. The under is 3-1-1 in New York’s past five overall, and 5-0-1 in their past six after allowing 100 or more points in the previous game.

Knicks branding specialist Steve Stoute somehow made the Knicks even messier

OH BOY.

The perpetual dumpster fire that is the New York Knicks just keeps getting hotter and hotter. This time it’s the guy who they hired to put out the fire who is actually spraying it with a gasoline right now.

Steve Stoute, the branding specialist and marketer the Knicks hired to clean their image up, made a big mess on Tuesday.

Stoute jumped on First Take to talk about….his job description? No, seriously. He came to talk about how he was going to rebrand the Knicks.

From the jump, it was clear he was very uncomfortable with the conversation — which is reasonable for a guy, what, two weeks on the job? This entire conversation is making me squirm over here. Imagine being Stoute sitting in that chair knowing your billionaire owner boss is listening.

Yeah…who approved this appearance again?

During his appearance, Stoute alluded to potential coaching changes being on the way. Interim head coach Mike Miller is at the helm now, but Stoute alluded to a new coach being on the way despite him having no control over personnel. HOO BOY.

“There had to be a change in  [with Steve Mills fired]. That change will bring a new coach and new coaches that are going to help develop these younger players. And they got some young players — you see RJ Barrett, Mitch Robinson. They got something to work with. And getting a coach in there and ultimately getting a coach and a coaching staff that’s going to help develop a team.”

Apparently, that’s outside of Stoute’s job description. How do we know? Because the Knicks told us. Yup. That’s right. ANOTHER KNICKS TWITTER STATEMENT.

At least it wasn’t on the notes app this time?

This is… definitely not a good look for Stoute. Talk about a rough first couple weeks at the new gig.

You KNOW you did something wrong when you’ve even got Woj roasting you on the TL. Woj doesn’t even tweet things.

Out of pocket, Woj. Out of pocket. A rough day for y’all Knicks, fans. Hopefully, you have better days ahead. It can’t get any worse, right?

Pray for Charles.

Report: New York Knicks interested in trading for Warriors’ D’Angelo Russell

According to SportsNet New York, the New York Knicks have interest in trading for Warriors’ D’Angelo Russell.

As the NBA rapidly approaches the 2020 trade deadline on February 6, each day brings a new team into the D’Angelo Russell rumor mill. Since his arrival at Golden State, teams from across the league have shown interest in trying to acquire Russell’s talents from the Warriors.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been linked to Russell since the time he was a free agent over the offseason and have continued to pursue him throughout his time as a member of Golden State. Marc Stein of The New York Times has reported that it’s “no secret Minnesota wants D-Lo badly.”

If the Warriors decide to move Russell, Minnesota may have some competition for the 23-year-old former Brooklyn Nets’ All-Star.

SportsNet New York’s Ian Begley reported the Knicks to have “registered interest” in Russell, with forward Bobby Portis as one of the names in the deal to bring the former Ohio State Buckeye to Madison Square Garden.

The Knicks have registered interest with Golden State about trading for D’Angelo Russell, league sources confirm. It’s unclear how far along talks have gone, but Bobby Portis is one name that came up in the conversations, per SNY sources.

Begley additionally reported that 21-year-old French guard, Frank Ntilikina is another name that could be attached to a trade for Russell.

Per SNY sources, Frank Ntilikina’s name has also come up in conversations between the Knicks and Warriors around Russell.

In his first season with Golden State, Russell is averaging 23.8 points and 6.3 assists in 32 games. The looming question surrounding Russell’s future in Golden State relates to injured two-time Most Valuable Player, Stephen Curry. Curry has been injured all but four games in the 2019-20 season, limiting the opportunity to build chemistry in the same backcourt as Russell.

Bob Myers and Steve Kerr will be forced to decide between either entertaining trade offers for Russell before the deadline or keep him in Golden State to see how he plays next to Curry.

Prediction

Cavaliers 106, Knicks 102

Moneyline (ML)

The CAVALIERS (-121) are the way to go despite the fact the Knicks (+100) are coming off an impressive road win against the Indiana Pacers last time out.

New to sports gambling? Every $1.21 wagered on the Cavs ML will profit $1 if they win.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The CAVALIERS (-1.5, -110) are a better play against the spread, as they simply need to win by a bucket. They’ll be looking to avenge a 106-86 loss against the Knicks back on Jan. 20 when they were a bit shorthanded. They’ll be healthier for this one, and you can expect a much better effort.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 216.5 (-106) has connected in seven of the past nine games overall for the Knicks, including that last meeting with the Cavs Jan. 20. In fact, we saw a total of just 192 points in a game with a line of 222. The Under is also 3-0 in the past three on the road for New York. The Over is 6-0 in the past six for Cleveland, with its last under result against these Knicks. It won’t be a defensive slog, but look for the total to slide Under.

Prediction

Grizzlies 119, Knicks 110

Moneyline (ML)

Grizzles-Knicks is the second game of a back-to-back for both teams. Memphis beat the Denver Nuggets 104-96 and the Knicks squandered a 13-point lead in a 97-92 loss to the Charlotte Hornets Tuesday. The Grizzlies have performed much better than the Knicks with zero rest days—Memphis is 4-2 with a 2-point margin of victory and New York is 1-5 with a minus-18.7 margin of victory in such situations. Team basketball is the key to the Grizzlies’ success as they have four starters above 15 points per game, are ranked third in passes made and first in assists per game.

It would be a massive letdown for the Grizzlies to lose against the lowly Knicks given their recent hot streak and a win in this game would make them .500 for the first time this season. Memphis is currently on a three-game winning streak and has won 10 of their last 12 games whereas the Knicks are just 4-11 in January. Also, New York struggles against fast-paced teams and Memphis is ranked fifth in the NBA in Pace. Against top-10 ranked teams in Pace, the Knicks are 4-10 losing, on average, 116-109.

HAMMER GRIZZLIES (-143) on the moneyline.

New to sports betting? Bet $143 on the Grizzlies to earn a $100 profit if they win outright.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

lean toward the Grizzlies (-2.5, -115) but officially, we will PASS on an against the spread wager in Grizzlies-Knicks. There isn’t much benefit to betting the Grizzlies line if you’re laying -115, so dump your NBA betting allowance on the Grizzlies on the moneyline.

Over/Under (O/U)

TAKE OVER 224.5 (+105) in Grizzlies-Knicks. We are on the Grizzlies to win outright so logic says the game will most likely be played at their tempo. Memphis has an Over/Under record of 5-1 with zero days off. Of course, we expect the Grizzlies to put up points going against a New York team ranked 24th by defensive rating and 30th in opponent 3-point percentage. The Knicks offense should be able to get buckets against a Grizzlies defense giving up 115.4 points per game. As stated above, the average score of Knicks games when going against top-10 paced teams is 225.

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 11 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Hornets 108, Knicks 100

Moneyline (ML)

Charlotte beat New York 103-102 with a game-winning 3-pointer during the final seconds in their first meeting of the season (Nov. 16). Neither team has played well lately—the Hornets have lost eight in a row, including 116-103 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in Paris. The Knicks are 3-7 in their last 10 games, but they have at least been competitive recently. They’ve won five in a row against the BetMGM point spreads so anticipate another nail biter in this Knicks-Hornets game.

The Hornets are fully healthy compared to a Knicks team without their top draft pick in Barrett. Also, the Knicks have played musical chairs with their starting backcourt, and the Hornets have had consistency with Devonte’ Graham and Terry Rozier. The factoid getting my money is that the Hornets have won nine of their last 10 home games against the Knicks. New York’s 6-17 road record is fourth-worst in the NBA. In a toss-up game, this appears to be the major differentiator between the two sides.

BET HORNETS (-115) on the moneyline.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Since the line is only +/-1.5 points, we are going to PASS on a wager against the spread in favor of our moneyline play.

New York is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 head-to-head meetings and 4-1 ATS in the last five games in Charlotte. If you’re expecting the same margin of victory as their first game, these trends help support that bet. But in the spirit of gambling, we are sticking with the Hornets to win outright while blowing off these trends and will disappointingly fork over our money to the gambling gods if the Knicks cover as 1.5-point dogs.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 210.5 (-125) is the only total bet to make. First, and most obvious, is the juiced up Under which is BetMGM‘s way of trying to price us out of the better line. Second, both offenses are atrocious; the Knicks are 28th in points per game and the Hornets are 30th. Finally, both teams play at a snail’s pace; New York has the 21st fastest Pace and Charlotte is last.
