Are the Texans winners or losers from the Khalil Davis trade?

Here’s how Texans Wire grades the Khalil Davis trade with the 49ers for a 2026 Day 3 pick.

Khalil Davis might have been out the door with the return of Houston Texans defensive tackle Mario Edwards Jr.

Instead of letting him walk, Houston picked up something in return.

The Texans closed Tuesday’s deadline by trading the fourth-year defensive tackle to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2026 seventh-round draft pick. Houston will now have a roster spot waiting for Edwards when he returns from his four-game suspension next week.

The former Nebraska star joined Houston in 2023 and impressed, recording a career-high 32 tackles with six quarterback hits and two sacks while helping the Texans secure their first playoff berth in four seasons.

This season, Davis has recorded two tackles and one sack on 172 defensive snaps for 32 percent of the total defensive playing time.

Here’s how Texans Wire grades out the trade for both sides.

Texans grade

Houston felt Davis provided the most value on the defensive line among depth pieces and figured it could survive by moving him. A 2026 seventh-round pick might seem low, but it could factor into a later deal for a more prominent name on the trade market.

Davis, who was in a contract year, could have left in free agency, leaving Houston without a compensatory pick in the 2025 draft. Instead, the Texans gain a future draft asset for a player who could be replaced with the return of Edwards.

For now, the Texans can lean on a combination of Tim Settle and Dencio Autry’s opposite Foley Fatukasi. Autry, who recorded two sacks in Thursday’s loss against the New York Jets, can kick inside at defensive tackle on pass-rushing sets on third down.

Could the Texans have gotten more? Perhaps, but it’s something. If Kurt Hinish was on the chopping block, then maybe fans could argue, but at least the Texans are adding draft depth over football depth.

Grade: B

49ers grade

Davis should provide depth behind former Texans starter Maliek Collins and veteran Jordan Elliott. The 49ers previously lost Javon Hargrave to a triceps injury that will likely end his season, so Davis should see an expanded role.

He’ll have an understanding of the defense since it’s a similar formation that derives in Houston. The 49ers also kept all their 2025 draft picks, so consider that a win.

NFL trade deadline: No major trade isn’t bad news for 49ers

The 2024 NFL trade deadline came and went with the 49ers making only one, very under-the-radar move.

The 2024 edition of the NFL trade deadline came and went with the San Francisco 49ers staying relatively quiet.

The day was headlined by CB Marshon Lattimore going from the New Orleans Saints to the Washington Commanders, edge rusher Za’Darius Smith heading from the Cleveland Browns to the Detriot Lions and wide receiver Mike Williams going from the New York Jets to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Despite multiple veteran pieces in potential positions of need being available, John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan decided to hold onto their premium draft capital and add some depth on the defensive line. Just before the deadline, San Francisco dealt a future seventh-round pick to the Houston Texans for veteran defensive tackle Khalil Davis.

While they didn’t make a major move on Tuesday, help is on the way for the 49ers.

While they’ve posted an underwhelming 4-4 record through nine weeks, it’s fair to say the 49ers have yet to be healthy at any point in the first half of the season. While they will still be missing players like Brandon Aiyuk, the 49ers will be getting a boost with the return of several key players.

For the first time all season, reigning Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey is nearing a highly-anticipated return to the field after being sidelined due to an Achilles injury. Along with McCaffrey, Brock Purdy will welcome more help offensively with the soon return of Jauan Jennings.

Jennings, who has posted a breakout campaign in 2024, has missed the last two games with a hip injury. Jennings, with the addition of McCaffrey and rookie Ricky Pearsall, will give Purdy and the 49ers offense more playmakers and depth for the stretch run of the 2024 season.

While Purdy’s offensive weapons will have more flexibility, so will the 49ers’ offensive line. Veteran offensive lineman Jon Feliciano recently had his practice window opened. Feliciano started every playoff game last season. While Dominick Puni likely wont be going anywhere, Feliciano’s return fills a whole in the 49ers offensive line depth. His return also provides competition for players like center Jake Brendel.

While the 49ers still have some question marks on the defensive line, the defensive line unit was a popular group on Tuesday’s trade deadline with players like Smith and Preston Smith being on the move. With Lynch and company not making a move, the 49ers will need to lean on one their free agent signings from the summer – Leonard Floyd.

The veteran pass rusher has had a quiet start to his campaign with the 49ers, recording 24 tackles and three sacks in eight games. Yet, over his last four games, Floyd has notched two of those sacks. If he continues that pace for the second half of the season, Floyd could check many boxes on the 49ers’ defensive front.

Coming off the bye week, the 49ers will enter the post-trade deadline run on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

49ers swing trade for DL help at the trade deadline buzzer

The 49ers made a trade!

The San Francisco 49ers made a move in the closing moments of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.

According to the Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the 49ers are dealing a 2026 seventh-round pick to the Houston Texans for defensive tackle Khalil Davis.

It’s not a huge surprise the 49ers and Texans linked up for a trade. They also came together on a deal that sent DT Maliek Collins to San Francisco over the offseason.

Davis, a 2020 sixth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of Nebraska, bounced around the league a couple of times before finding a home last season in Houston.

As a rookie with the Buccaneers, Davis played in only two games. The next year with the Indianapolis Colts he saw action in only one game before getting let go mid-season.

In 2022 Davis was on practice squads with the Steelers, Buccaneers and Rams.

The Texans signed him during the 2023 preseason and he wound up playing in 15 games for them. He notched 2.0 of his 3.0 career sacks. He added another this year where he’s contributed in all nine of Houston’s games.

It’s unlikely Davis will make a major impact, but he’ll fit in as a rotational interior defensive lineman where San Francisco has been thin since DT Javon Hargrave went down. Adding depth for the price of a future seventh-round pick is a nice move for the 49ers.

2024 NFL free agency: DT Khalil Davis contract details with Texans

The Houston Texans maintained depth on the defensive line with the retention of defensive tackle Khalil Davis.

The Houston Texans brought back defensive tackle Khalil Davis near the start of free agency.

He signed a one-year deal worth $1.65 million, according to KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson. Davis’ deal has a $1.1 base salary for 2024, a $350,000 signing bonus and a per-game active roster worth up to $150,000 for the season. He can make an additional $50,000 in workout bonuses.

Davis, 27, mostly played as a backup interior defensive lineman but could see more snaps in 2024 if Houston doesn’t add more starting-caliber players on the defensive line. He totaled two sacks, six quarterback hits and 10 pressures in 422 defensive snaps over 15 games this season. Davis started one game.

Defensive tackle is a bit of a mess right now in Houston. The team won’t have either of its 2023 starters after the Texans traded away Maliek Collins and let Sheldon Rankins walk in free agency. General manager Nick Caserio signed veterans Tim Settle Jr. and Foley Fatukasi as potential starters as well.

Davis is a quality depth piece, but the line could be in trouble if he, Settle and or Fatukasi are poised to start or see significant snaps this season.

WATCH: Texans DT Khalil Davis forces Falcons RB Bijan Robinson fumble

Houston Texans defensive tackle Khalil Davis forced a key fumble in the third quarter against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 5.

The Houston Texans have been preaching SWARM since DeMeco Ryans took over as coach in February.

One of the venues where the SWARM mentality showed up with dividends yet again was Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Week 5 against the Atlanta Falcons. Although the oculus above the field may have been open, there was hardly any daylight for the Falcons running game.

The Texans had miscues as far as the third quarter with five neutral zone or offsides penalties. However, the defensive line began to turn the tide as defensive tackle Khalil Davis forced running back Bijan Robinson to fumble with 11:01 to go in the third quarter. Defensive end Dylan Horton recovered to give Houston their first takeaway of the game.

The Houston Texans addressed their defensive line and also made moves to their offensive line.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Khalil Davis, who previously had a workout with the team. The 6-1, 308-pounder has spent the spring with the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions, winning a championship this season.

The Texans claimed Washington guard Keaton Sutherland off waivers. The Texas A&M product has appeared in six career games during his time with the Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins from 2019-21. Both of Sutherland’s career starts came in 2019 with Miami.

As a corresponding move, the Texans placed former Miami Hurricanes offensive lineman D.J. Scaife on injured reserve as he sustained a season-ending leg injury.
