Georgia RB out against Kentucky

Per reports, Georgia football will be without a key running back against Kentucky.

In addition to wide receiver George Pickens, running back Kenny McIntosh will reportedly miss today’s Georgia game against Kentucky.

Per Kirby Smart, McIntosh, a sophomore, did not dress out after being limited during the bye week with a knee injury.

McIntosh has been one of the biggest surprises this season for the Bulldogs, and ranks third nationally in kick return average, with an average return of 36.33 yards.

Matchup predictor: Georgia has a 85.9% chance to win, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index.

Series history: Currently the Bulldogs lead the overall series 59-12-2 over Kentucky. Georgia has won the last ten, with the Wildcats last victory coming in 2009.

Prediction: Georgia is not a good matchup from Kentucky’s standpoint. The Bulldogs are more than happy to chew the clock and run for 250 yards and usually that’s Kentucky’s game, but with quarterback Terry Wilson out due to injury, Auburn transfer Joey Gatewood will have to try and win with his arm, something Georgia’s elite secondary will look to take advantage of.

I’m taking Georgia 32-3, the Bulldogs dominate this one.

Georgia vs Kentucky: Expert picks and predictions

The UGA Wire staff presents our weekly expert score, stat and game predictions ahead of Georgia football at Kentucky.

The No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs (3-1, 3-1) travel to Lexington this Saturday to face off against the Kentucky Wildcats (2-3, 2-3).

Kentucky began the season ranked 23rd but have since dropped after losing three of five games.  The Wildcats are definitely sneaky this year, beating a Mississippi State team by a score of 24 – 2 as well as Tennessee by 27 points.  That margin of victory over the Vols is larger than Georgia’s.

Georgia enters this game coming off a loss at Alabama two weeks ago and a bye week last week.  Kentucky comes into this matchup following a 20-10 loss last week to Missouri.

Saturday’s kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 P.M. ET on SEC Network.

With that said, the UGA Wire staff has put together a number of score, stat and game predictions ahead of Saturday’s matchup.

Here are the picks:

Updated SEC football TV times and schedule for Oct. 24

The fifth week of SEC conference play features Auburn at Ole Miss, Alabama at Tennessee, South Carolina at LSU, and more.

The fifth week of SEC conference play features Auburn at Ole Miss, Alabama at Tennessee, South Carolina at LSU, and Kentucky at Missouri. Following a Florida Gators COVID outbreak, the league rescheduled the Georgia Bulldogs at Kentucky Wildcats game and the Florida Gators verus Missouri Tigers game.

Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Georgia, Florida, and Texas A&M now all have the week off. Both UGA and Florida won’t have bye weeks before their Nov. 7 game.

Will Alabama have a let down following their primetime win over Georgia? Tennessee has looked rough in blowout losses in their past two weeks, so don’t count on it. The Crimson Tide are already the final undefeated team in the SEC.

The Georgia Bulldogs were set to have a night game against Kentucky. Now, UGA travels to Lexington for a noon game on Halloween (Oct. 31).

As always in the SEC, there are a lot of good match-ups. Please note the game changes mentioned above for Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, and Missouri.

The headliner for the week has to be Alabama at Tennessee. Can the Vols put up a fight against the Crimson Tide?

Interestingly, all of the other week five action features teams with a minimum of two losses. Auburn and LSU will be particularly desperate this week. This may be a good week to watch college football outside of the SEC.

The Big Ten returns and Ohio State should look impressive against Nebraska. Other top college football match-ups include:

Cincinnati at SMU, Michigan at Minnesota, Iowa State at Oklahoma State, and NC State at UNC. What’s your favorite game for the week?

Kentucky running back’s too-early TD celebration vs. Ole Miss ends in disaster

Never celebrate early. Ever.

Kentucky was so close to immediately responding to Ole Miss’ opening-drive touchdown Saturday with an incredible touchdown play of its own. But that play, and the rest of the Wildcats’ first possession, instead ended in total disaster.

On 1st-and-10 from Kentucky’s 25-yard line, Wildcats senior running back Asim Rose was handed the ball and had room to work with on his left. He capitalized on his space and speed, and he blew by Ole Miss’ defense down the field.

But Rose seemingly thought he had the all defenders completely beat, and he started to celebrate what could have been his first touchdown of the season a little too early. He flashed a peace sign and even glanced behind him for a split second — a view which should have made him realize he was in danger of being caught.

And when he was less than 10 yards from the goal line and pointing at the end zone, he went down. It was a 72-yard gain instead of a 75-yard touchdown.

Somehow, the situation actually got worse.

On 1st-and-goal on Ole Miss’ 3-yard line, Rose picked up two. And on second down, he fumbled the ball on the goal line, and defensive end Ryder Anderson recovered it. Luckily for Rose and Kentucky, Ole Miss didn’t score on the subsequent possession, but the Wildcats surely envisioned their opening drive ending differently.

The moral of the story here is never celebrate scoring before you’ve actually scored.

ESPN has the full video of Rose’s huge run and subsequent gaffe.

Twitter reactions to Auburn’s win over Kentucky

Twitter was on fire following Auburn’s victory over Kentucky.

Auburn vs Kentucky quickly became the most discussed SEC game of the 2020 conference opener. In a top-25 matchup featuring the No. 8 Tigers vs the No. 23 Wildcats, social media reactions ran rampant. The following are key tweets throughout the game that showcase both the highs and lows of gameday.

Key takeaways: Seth Williams and JJ Pegues are both freak athletes, that targeting call was very lame, and long live Pat Dye. War Eagle.

Auburn Wire Picks: Who wins Auburn vs. Kentucky?

The staff of Auburn Wire picks who will win the battle between the Tigers and Wildcats on Saturday.

College football season is finally here and Auburn will host Kentucky in Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday as the Tigers look to start the 2020 season 1-0.

The Wildcats bring in a veteran offensive line and a talented team that will challenge Gus Malzahn’s side. So who wins? The staff at Auburn Wire have made their predictions.

Shea Brennaman

Auburn 27, Kentucky 17

I think Kentucky will be able to score against Auburn due to the protection they bring back with their offensive line, but Kentucky’s defense has absolutely no idea what to expect from Auburn’s offense (nobody does). Kentucky returns eight starters to a defense that finished second in the country last year in passing yards allowed, but 64th in rushing defense. I think Auburn’s secret to success here is speed. The Tigers will get their run game started early to wear out the Wildcats’ defense, this game will be close but I’m sticking to the 10 point spread here.
Breakout stars for Auburn: Anthony Schwartz, Shaun Shivers

JD McCarthy

Auburn 24, Kentucky 17

Auburn is replacing two generational talents on the defensive line in Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson and the defense will immediately be put to the test by a Kentucky offense that boost one of the top offensive lines in the country and a trio of talented backs. While Kentucky will have some success on the ground, K.J. Britt and Co. will be able to hold it in check.

Auburn fans are eager to watch Auburn’s offense under now offensive coordinator Chad Morris and a revamped passing attack. Bo Nix, Seth Williams and Anthony Schwartz will have a tough matchup with a secondary that allowed the second-fewest passing yards but will make enough to pull out the victory.

Brian Stultz

Auburn 28, Kentucky 20

All that has been talked about it seems this fall has been the explosiveness of Chad Morris’ offense and how it will transform the Tigers. Well, it is time to see if that is truly the case. Kentucky brings in a talented and veteran team that should be able to give Auburn some fits but, when it comes down to it, I believe Bo Nix and the running game for Auburn will be too much for the Wildcats.

Behind Enemy Lines: Talking Auburn-Kentucky with Cats Pause Derek Terry

Auburn and Kentucky will meet on Saturday in both teams’ openers.

Auburn and Kentucky meet in two days in Jordan-Hare Stadium as the SEC football season finally kicks off.

To get an idea of what to expect from the Wildcats, I spoke with Cats Pause writer Derek Terry.

On what Kentucky position group is being overlooked

“I would say the defensive line and probably secondary. Start of the defensive line, they are pretty experienced. Quinton Bohanna, he’s going to be a four year starter this year. He’s been on the line since his freshman year. Josh Paschal moved back down. The plan was always pretty much for him to play defensive line. And then he had the melanoma diagnosis a few years ago, a slight bit of outside linebacker, but he’s back full time by defense of that. And Phil Hoskins is a 6th year guy, he’ll probably start, but they’ve got a lot of depth. So there’s a lot of experience there. And then in the secondary, I don’t know, I’m curious to see, cause they finished second nationally and passing are the loud, but they… If you watch the games last year, they played in like, I think one third of the games basically in the regular season were played in the rain. And also it was just the quarterback situation in the East last year. It was just, it was kind of a mess for every team really. I mean, see, my most teams were at some point play their second string. So I think they have talent back there, especially out in Calvin Joseph this year I think it’s going to help. But at the same time, I’m really curious to see how true those numbers are going to hold up and what should be a year that maybe some things are a little bit more settled, but those would be the two spots I would say are the two positions that are pretty strong.”

On quarterback Terry Wilson

“Yeah, I do think obviously this year, I’ve not really gotten to watch. We would see a few practices. That’s not been the case this year, so you’re pretty much out there relying on what the coaches say. Well, you had Vince Marrow today, the associate head coach on our podcast. And he was saying that he thinks he looks just as good. I know when he cuts a practice, everything looks good. He’s if he’s running this as fast as he was, I think the big question Mark is, it’s just been so long since he’s playing the game. I mean, it’s going to be over a year by the time that’s all Bringham gets here. It’s a real game and I know it means a different thing this year because the crowds are going to be so I was sparse, but I think he will need some time to settle back in. And I really felt like had he been able to play a full year, last year, kind of his outlook. And I really feel like to talk to you maybe how to develop at the rate that of his potential. I mean, I think he could have been going into a year where you didn’t have too many questions on the offense, but as it stands right now, that’s got to be the biggest question mark. It’s not only how healthy he is, but also how are these wide receivers going to… Because they’re not a very well known group and it’s not really all their fault because of what happened last year, where they had to go off boat. But Terry for Kentucky, I think to be more than just a middle tier sec team this year, I think he’s going to have to really play well.”

On running backs

“Yeah, three guys right there are competing for the starting job. Adrian Arose as a senior, he pretty much started every game last year. And then Kavosiey Smoke and Chris Rodriguez are sophomores who at times last year kind of took over. Especially early in the year, Smoke was very good. And then towards the end of the year, so it was Rodriguez was getting a lot of the reps. Actually there are a few freshmen too, who I don’t know against Albourne how much he’ll play. He might be one of those freshmen that as a year goes on plays more, but to kind of claim has been talked about a lot of this camp. He’s really been praised quite a bit by Eddie grant who, as you know, being an Albert guys really successful history of coaching, running backs, phrases, kid, as much as he is. I think you can now expect that he’s got a pretty bright future.”

On experience being an advantage for Kentucky

:Well, you have, I think I just like for an early season game, I really do think that benefits can talk to you that… It’s not even so much like Auburn recruits really good kids. And, and time I think those kids will be good, but if you’ve had a year like this and I don’t know how much Chad Morris has coming in there to change that off balance. But when you have a year like this, where you lost practice time, I don’t know Auburn, like every schools that’s now that was told that I don’t know, especially specifically where those guys are out. But I do think that Kentucky’s just this, the scheme is the same as it’s been. The players are the same. I really do feel like that the stability is probably going to be of help to Kentucky in this game. But we’ll see if Kentucky’s having a little bit of a battle, had a left guard. Kenneth Horsey was a projected starter, but he’s been out with an injury. So kind of have to play a guy who’s really never played before. Most likely starting as Austin Dodson. So everywhere else in the line, he got four starters back. Both tackles are probably going to be drafted this year. So Kentucky’s don’t need those guys to live up to that billing.”

On Kentucky’s depth

“I do think it’s the deepest, especially at certain positions and what really helps is they were already bringing a lot of guys back, but then they find the number 25 class in the country, which is still only good for like 10th in the SEC but for Kentucky’s I mean, that’s a big deal of the kind of class that good because you continue to kind of supplement that roster with highly rated guys. The fact that I got… It was a true freshman, he was a high school, but it sounds like he’s for sure going to play this first game. For him to be able to break in like that I think is a good sign, but I would have to agree it’s the deepest, I don’t know that they’re going to win as many games. They might not have the stars though. That makes sense. I don’t see a business now on this offense. There’s probably not a Josh Allen type player on defense, but as a whole, I think top to bottom, the roster is better than it was in 2018, but that might not mean more wins. That makes sense.”
