Broncos want to re-sign pending free agent LB Josey Jewell

The Broncos appear to be prioritizing Josey Jewell over fellow pending free agents Kenny Young and Alexander Johnson.

The Denver Broncos will meet with inside linebacker Josey Jewell’s agent, Jack Bechta, at the NFL combine in Indianapolis this week, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Jewell (6-2, 236 pounds) is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 16, and the Broncos would like to re-sign him before then, according to Klis.

The 27-year-old defender entered the league as a fourth-round pick out of Iowa in 2018. After playing primarily on special teams through his first two seasons, Jewell won a starting job in 2020 and totaled 113 tackles and two sacks.

Following his breakout season, Jewell suffered a season-ending pectoral injury two games into Denver’s 2021 campaign. That injury might hurt Jewell’s market value, which could potentially make him a cheaper option than teammate Kenny Young (another pending free agent).

Alexander Johnson is also scheduled to become a free agent, but he’s three years older than Jewell. The Broncos might hold talks with Young and Johnson, but it seems clear that Jewell is the team’s priority at linebacker.

While Young and Johnson will presumably be allowed to test free agency, Denver’s hoping to give Jewell an extension before free agency begins.

1 pending free agent the Eagles could target from each AFC team

With some big names set to hit the open market, we’re looking at 1 pending #NFL free agent the #Philadelphia #Eagles could target from each #AFC team

The Philadelphia Eagles will enter the 2022 NFL offseason with several pressing needs, and the free-agent period offers the opportunity to sign a polished veteran from other talent-filled teams.

Howie Roseman is stacked with assets and will look to fill holes or urgent needs at wide receiver, cornerback, and safety, among others.

With several big-name free agents set to hit the open market, we’re looking at the one pending free agent Philadelphia could target from each AFC team.

Von Miller and Kenny Young had opposite seasons in 2021

Kenny Young’s former team went on to win the Super Bowl. Von Miller’s former team missed the playoffs.

Los Angeles Rams outside linebacker Von Miller and Denver Broncos inside linebacker Kenny Young had opposite seasons in 2021.

OK, not completely opposite — they were both traded shortly before the NFL’s deadline — but the similarities stop there.

The Rams traded Young to the Broncos in late October for a mere sixth-round pick in 2024. Denver got a steal because L.A. needed salary cap space and Young was viewed as an expendable player on a contract year.

The move worked out well for the Broncos’ defense — which finished third-best in points allowed last year — but it certainly wasn’t ideal for Young. The Rams were 6-1 when they traded him. Denver was 3-4.

The Broncos finished the season in last place in the AFC West with a 7-10 record, missing the playoffs for a sixth-straight year. Not a fun way for Young to close out the season after such a strong start in Los Angeles.

Miller, on the other hand, was traded from a 4-4 Denver team in early November to a 7-1 Rams team. L.A. finished in first place in the NFC West last season with a 12-5 record and went on to reach Super Bowl LVI.

Miller recorded two sacks in the Ram’s 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday, marking Miller’s second Super Bowl win. Miller started the year on a struggling team and ended the season as a Super Bowl champion.

Their seasons couldn’t have been more opposite, but they do have something in common going into the NFL offseason — Miller (32) and Young (26) are scheduled to become free agents in March.

Broncos will be missing at least 6 starters vs. Chargers

Among the Broncos out with COVID-19 this week: WR Jerry Jeudy, WR Tim Patrick, RT Bobby Massie, OLB Bradley Chubb and CB Bryce Callahan.

The Denver Broncos will be without at least six starters when they face the Los Angeles Chargers on the road in Week 17.

Broncos quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (concussion), wide receivers Jerry Jeudy (COVID) and Tim Patrick (COVID), right tackle Bobby Massie (COVID) outside linebacker Bradley Chubb (COVID), inside linebacker Baron Browning (COVID) and slot cornerback Bryce Callahan (COVID) have all been ruled out for Sunday’s game, and the team now has 16 total players on COVID-19 reserve lists.

Elsewhere on the injury report, inside linebacker Kenny Young (concussion) is listed as questionable after missing the last two games.

Defensive line coach Bill Kollar is also in COVID-19 protocol and won’t be available for this week’s game.

The Broncos opened as 5.5-point road underdogs against the Chargers earlier this week, but that line might change with Denver being shorthanded going into the New Year.

Denver Broncos center Lloyd Cushenberry has been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced Thursday.

Cushenberry could be cleared in time for Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders if he has a negative test before then. If Cushenberry is not back in time for the game, Austin Schlottmann and Quinn Meinerz would be the candidates to start in his place, coach Vic Fangio said.

Broncos inactives: 5 players won’t play vs. Bengals

Broncos inactives: DL Dre’Mont Jones (foot), ILB Kenny Young (concussion), DB Caden Sterns (shoulder/neck), CB Michael Ojemudia and QB Brett Rypien.

The Denver Broncos have announced their list of five inactive players for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Broncos defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones (foot), inside linebacker Kenny Young (concussion), safety Caden Sterns (shoulder/neck), cornerback Michael Ojemudia and quarterback Brett Rypien are inactive today.

Shamar Stephen and DeShawn Williams will fill in for Jones on the defensive line and Jonas Griffith is expected to start at linebacker in the place of Young.

Denver running back Mike Boone and outside linebacker Malik Reed also won’t play today but they are not officially inactive because they do not count against the active roster while on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Broncos also on Saturday activated safety P.J. Locke from the Reserve/COVID-19 list to the 53-man roster. To make room for Locke on the active roster, Denver waived cornerback Essang Bassey. If he clears waivers, Bassey will likely be re-signed to the practice squad next week.

Sunday’s game will begin at 2:05 p.m. MT on CBS (view the TV map).
