Broncos want to re-sign pending free agent LB Josey Jewell

The Broncos appear to be prioritizing Josey Jewell over fellow pending free agents Kenny Young and Alexander Johnson.

The Denver Broncos will meet with inside linebacker Josey Jewell’s agent, Jack Bechta, at the NFL combine in Indianapolis this week, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Jewell (6-2, 236 pounds) is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 16, and the Broncos would like to re-sign him before then, according to Klis.

The 27-year-old defender entered the league as a fourth-round pick out of Iowa in 2018. After playing primarily on special teams through his first two seasons, Jewell won a starting job in 2020 and totaled 113 tackles and two sacks.

Following his breakout season, Jewell suffered a season-ending pectoral injury two games into Denver’s 2021 campaign. That injury might hurt Jewell’s market value, which could potentially make him a cheaper option than teammate Kenny Young (another pending free agent).

Alexander Johnson is also scheduled to become a free agent, but he’s three years older than Jewell. The Broncos might hold talks with Young and Johnson, but it seems clear that Jewell is the team’s priority at linebacker.

While Young and Johnson will presumably be allowed to test free agency, Denver’s hoping to give Jewell an extension before free agency begins.
