Atlanta Falcons Week 7 injury designations: Takkarist McKinley Questionable

The Detroit Lions Week 7 opponent, the Atlanta Falcons, have released their injury designations ahead of Sunday’s game.

The Detroit Lions Week 7 opponent, the Atlanta Falcons, have released their injury designations and only one injured player is listed with an injury for this game: Takkarist McKinley.

Here’s a look at the Falcons’ full injury designations list.

Ruled OUT

Player Position Injury Designation
None

No players listed as OUT this week.

Questionable

Player Position Injury Designation
Takkarist McKinley EDGE Groin Questionable

McKinley did not play in the Falcons Week 6 game due to his groin injury and when this week’s practices began he was once again unable to participate on Wednesday or Thursday, but he did return to the practice field on Friday.

He has only played in three games this season, but McKinley has accounted for eight pressures and had a sack in Week 1.

He still seems like a longshot to play this Sunday, but the questionable designation gives him a chance. Expect the Falcons to re-examine him on Saturday and if he passes those physicals, then he could end up being a game-time decision.

No injury designation

Player Position Injury Designation
Julio Jones WR Hamstring No Designation
Calvin Ridley WR Elbow No Designation
Russell Gage WR Shoulder No Designation
Brandon Powell WR Elbow No Designation
Dante Fowler Jr. EDGE Ankle No Designation
Kendall Sheffield CB Foot No Designation
Jaylinn Hawkins SS Concussion No Designation

The seven players listed in this section are all nursing injuries and most — save Gage — saw at least one limited practice this week. Fortunately for the Falcons, they are all expected to be available for Sunday, as they will not carry an injury designation into the game.

Sheffield on return: ‘It’s going to be very tough, but I’m up for it’

Falcons second-year cornerback Kendall Sheffield has returned from a foot injury that sidelined him for the team’s first three games.

The Falcons’ defensive secondary has predictably struggled this season, both due to injuries and inexperience. Things will get even tougher in Week 4 on ESPN’s Monday Night Football when the team takes an explosive Green Bay Packers offense.

On Saturday, Atlanta ruled out both starting safeties, Keanu Neal and Ricardo Allen, along with cornerback A.J. Terrell, who’s still on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Starting nickel CB Darqueze Dennard is on injured reserve for at least the next three games.

But there is one small ray of hope for the Falcons on Monday. Second-year cornerback Kendall Sheffield has returned from a foot injury that sidelined him for the team’s first three games. It’s not exactly an ideal situation for the young corner to be walking into, though.

The Falcons are starting Sheffield in his 2020 debut against Packers QB Aaron Rodgers in prime time. When asked about the challenge he’s up against, Sheffield didn’t deny it would be tough.

“It’s going to be very tough, but I’m up for it and I believe in my abilities,” said Sheffield following Saturday’s practice. “The coaches that I’ve got have got us ready for this game, so I’ll be ready.”

Watch Sheffield’s comments below, as shared by ESPN’s Vaughn McClure on Twitter:

Atlanta’s Week 4 injury report came out today and both receivers Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley were listed as questionable for Monday’s game. Defensive end Takk McKinley will miss his second-straight contest as well.

Falcons WR Russell Gage to practice, CB Kendall Sheffield out Wednesday

The Falcons will begin practicing on Wednesday for their Week 2 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

The Falcons will begin practicing on Wednesday for their Week 2 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Head coach Dan Quinn gave some injury updates on cornerback Kendall Sheffield, who missed Week 1, and wide receiver Russell Gage, who took a big hit from Seahawks safety Jamal Adams.

As reported by Jason Butt of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Sheffield will miss Wednesdays’s practice due to a foot injury.

ESPN’s Vaughn McClure is reporting that Gage is good to go for today’s practice.

As for rookie defensive lineman Marlon Davidson, Quinn said he wants to see a full practice out of the former Auburn standout before he considers him ready for Sunday’s matchup.

Stay tuned for more updates following Wednesday’s practice.

Falcons rookie CB A.J. Terrell — who was limited yesterday — is out there as well, but wearing a compression sleeve on his leg.

Terrell has a minor hamstring injury but looks good to go for this weekend’s opener against the Seattle Seahawks. Meanwhile, second-year CB Kendall Sheffield‘s status for Sunday is uncertain, as team reporter William McFadden reports below.

Dan Quinn praises Falcons secondary coach Joe Whitt

The Atlanta Falcons kept the majority of their coaching staff intact after last season’s 7-9 finish. One addition the team did make, however, was secondary coach Joe Whitt.

The Atlanta Falcons kept the majority of their coaching staff intact after last season’s 7-9 finish. One change the team did make, however, was the addition of secondary coach Joe Whitt.

After spending the 2007 season as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Falcons, Whitt spent ten years coaching the Packers’ defensive backs before a one-year pit stop in Cleveland during 2019 as the Browns secondary coach and passing game coordinator.

Atlanta head coach Dan Quinn brought Whitt aboard during the offseason and the move is already paying off. As tweeted by beat reporter Kelsey Conway below, Quinn raved about Whitt’s early impact on the team’s young secondary.

Quinn said Whitt has been one of the Falcons’ most valuable offseason additions, which couldn’t come at a better time as the team enters the year with very little experience at cornerback beyond Darqueze Denanrd.

Atlanta drafted Clemson’s A.J. Terrell in the first round and the rookie could potentially start this season. Meanwhile, Kendall Sheffield and Isaiah Oliver return, but have just three years of NFL experience between them.

Oliver gave Whitt some serous praise as well, per ESPN’s Vaughn McClure.

Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris will have his work cut out for him this season, but it sounds like the team is off to a great start under Whitt’s direction. Stay tuned for more news coming out of the Falcons’ Wednesday training camp practice.

Falcons rookie CB Kendall Sheffield shines in win over Saints

Entering Sunday’s game against the Saints, the Falcons secondary looked to be in bad shape with top corner Desmond Trufant set to miss his fourth straight game.

Entering Sunday’s game against the Saints, the Falcons secondary looked to be in bad shape with top corner Desmond Trufant set to miss his fourth straight game.

Apparently, something clicked for this team during the bye week, however, and Atlanta would play its best defensive game all season, beating a 7-1 New Orleans team on the road.

The Falcons recorded six sacks of Saints QB Drew Brees, while the secondary played with confidence for the first time in weeks. Rookie Kendall Sheffield more than held his own in Week 10 — being targeted seven times and allowing just five catches for 28 yards.

Pro Football Focus gave Sheffield an impressive grade of 89.9 for his performance on Sunday:

The Falcons have asked a lot of their rookie fourth-round pick this season, and although there have been some bumps in the road, Sheffield has exceeded expectations in 2019.

The team may have lucked into another building block if the former Ohio State standout can keep it up.
