49ers roster moves: CB Anthony Brown released

The #49ers made some roster moves.

The 49ers on Tuesday announced a couple roster moves heading into their bye week.

San Francisco announced the release of cornerback Anthony Brown, as well as the release of practice squad CB Kendall Sheffield. To replace Sheffield, they added offensive lineman Jesse Davis to the practice squad.

Brown’s release could mean the return of CB Samuel Womack from IR is imminent. It might also just be the clearance of a roster spot to make room for DE Chase Young, who is set to join the club via trade with the Washington Commanders.

Davis will give the team more internal depth at OL while they deal with injuries to Trent Williams and Aaron Banks. He has starting experience at right guard and right tackle. The 2017 undrafted rookie has played in 94 games with 72 starts across six seasons.

Analyzing the Texans’ recent transactions

The Houston Texans made a flurry of transactions Aug. 12-13. Here is what they could mean.

The Houston Texans were busy after their 20-9 win over the New England Patriots.

Coach DeMeco Ryans saw the Texans’ first preseason game as a decent entry.

“I think this was a great starting point for us as a team, but it also is great to get young guys reps, and it’s great to get the tape so guys can see where we need to improve, why are these small details so important, why are coaches harping on these things,” Ryans said. “Now, you see it in a game, and you see why, and I think guys will continue to improve.”

As part of that improvement, the Texans made a total of six roster moves on Aug. 12-13. Here is a look at those moves and what they could indicate.

Texans training camp: Houston activates 2 from PUP list, waives receiver

The Houston Texans have activated two players from the physically unable to perform list while also waiving a receiver as part of their roster moves.

The Houston Texans announced two players have passed their physicals and can take part in training camp.

The Texans took defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins and cornerback Kendall Sheffield off the physically unable to perform list Sunday.

Houston signed Rankins in free agency to provide depth along the interior defensive line. The former New Orleans Saints and New York Jets defensive tackle enters his eighth season.

Sheffield has his second chance to make the Texans’ roster. In 2022, the Texans claimed Sheffield off waivers during organized team activities in May, but cut him at the end of preseason. Following a stint with the Dallas Cowboys midway through the season, wherein he was not signed to a reserve/future contract, Houston brought Sheffield back on March 3.

The Texans also waived receiver Amari Rodgers. The former Green Bay Packers 2021 third-round pick caught 12 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown through six games for Houston last season.

Texans release C Justin Britt, sign DB Kendall Sheffield to active roster

The Houston Texans have released center Justin Britt and signed cornerback Kendall Sheffield to the active roster.

The Houston Texans continue to eat around the edges as they prepare for their free agency moves when the new league year begins March 15.

The Texans released center Justin Britt Friday. The former Seattle Seahawks 2014 second-round pick played in the season opener against the Indianapolis Colts and was placed on the non-football illness list thereafter. Britt never played another down for the Texans last season, and Scott Quessenberry played the next 16 games at center.

Sheffield spent last offseason with the Texans but was placed on injured reserve at the end of preseason. Houston released him on Oct. 11, and the Dallas Cowboys kept the former Atlanta Falcons 2019 fourth-round cornerback on their practice squad through the end of the regular season.

Report: Cowboys expected to sign former Dan Quinn CB in wake of Lewis loss

Kendall Sheffield was a 4th-round draft pick by the Falcons in 2019; the Texas native also set track records in high school and college. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The loss of cornerback Jourdan Lewis for the season to a Lisfranc injury looks like it will open the door for rookie DaRon Bland to get more playing time, as well as Kelvin Joseph and even Nahshon Wright.

But the ripple effect means there’s a new opportunity at the bottom of the depth chart, too. And the Cowboys are looking to one of defensive coordinator Dan Quinn’s former players to fill it.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that the team is expected to sign Kendall Sheffield to the practice squad. Sheffield was a fourth-round draft pick of the Atlanta Falcons in 2019 under then-head coach Quinn.

A Texas native, Sheffield attended Ohio State after one redshirt season at Alabama and a year at junior college.

Over three seasons in Atlanta, Sheffield started 20 games and saw time in 18 more. He recorded 72 solo tackles (101 total), six passes defended, and two forced fumbles. He was released in May and spent this past training camp with the Texans. After starting the 2022 season on the waived/injured reserve list, he was released by Houston in mid-October.

Sheffield’s most outstanding trait could be his speed. A track star in high school in Missouri City, he was a state champion in both 2014 and 2015. In 2018, he was named the fastest player in college football by NFL.com after setting a new Buckeyes mark in the 60-meter dash, breaking a record that had stood for 23 years.

The 26-year-old had a tryout with the New York Giants last week.

Texans add OT K.C. McDermott to practice squad among 3 roster moves

The Houston Texans have signed offensive tackle K.C. McDermott to their practice squad as part of three total moves.

The Houston Texans may be on their bye week, but they are still finding ways to improve their roster and other support structures.

The Texans announced Tuesday they have signed former Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Giants tackle K.C. McDermott to the practice squad. Houston brought in McDermott for a tryout on Monday.

Houston also released tight end Nick Eubanks from the practice squad. The Texans also waived defensive back Kendall Sheffield from the reserve/injured list.

McDermott has experience with current offensive line coach George Warhop, who was the offensive line coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2019-21. All 16 of McDermott’s activations, including one start, occurred from 2020-21.

Former Ohio State safety Kendall Sheffield claimed by Houston Texans

Kendall Sheffield has a new home. #GoBucks

Well, that didn’t take long.

Just a couple of days after being released by the Atlanta Falcons, former Ohio State safety Kendall Sheffield was claimed by the Houston Texans. ESPN’s Field Yates was the first to report the news.

Sheffield was originally drafted by the Falcons in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL draft. He quickly ascended as a starting safety during his first two years in the league but began to get lost in the shuffle last season, much of it because of injury concerns. He is credited with 101 tackles during his three years in Atlanta.

Sheffield will now try to carve out some playing time in Houston. We’ll be keeping an eye on how it all goes as things progress through summer and into the fall.

We’ll also continue to keep our eyes and ears open for any further developments with Ohio State players in the NFL.

Texans awarded 2 players off waivers among other roster moves

The Houston Texans made a bevy of roster moves, including the waiver claim of DB Kendall Sheffield from the Atlanta Falcons.

Talent evaluation and roster acquisition doesn’t stop simply because the NFL draft is over and free agency has dried up.

The Houston Texans were busy on Monday with a bevy of roster transactions — including the signings of rookies Kenyon Green and John Metchie.

Houston waived defensive backs Reggie Robinson and Kolby Harvell-Peel. For Harvell-Peel, according to Aaron Wilson of the Pro Football Network, if he goes unclaimed off waivers, the former Oklahoma State Cowboy reverts to injured reserve.

The Texans also put in waiver claims of their own and were awarded defensive back Kendall Sheffield from the Atlanta Falcons and receiver Connor Wedington from the San Francisco 49ers.

Sheffield played in 38 games for the Falcons over the past three seasons, starting in 20 of them. The former fourth-round pick from Ohio State generated 101 combined tackles, two forced fumbles, and six pass breakups in his time with Atlanta.

Wedington, a former Stanford product, spent time with the 49ers on their practice squad in 2021 after going undrafted.

Falcons cut CB Kendall Sheffield, TE Ryan Becker

The Falcons have released cornerback Kendall Sheffield and tight end Ryan Becker.

Shortly after the Atlanta Falcons announced their trade for Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Bryan Edwards, the team released cornerback Kendall Sheffield and tight end Ryan Becker.

Drafted in the fourth round back in 2019, Sheffield started 20 games over the last three seasons for the Falcons. He recorded 72 solo tackles, six passes defended and two forced fumbles.

Sheffield is a player many expected to be released as it frees up $2.54 million in cap space for Atlanta and he wasn’t likely to play a prominent role in the defensive backfield.
