Ex-Falcons safety Jaylinn Hawkins signing with Patriots

Ex-Falcons safety Jaylinn Hawkins is signing with the New England Patriots

Former Falcons safety Jaylinn Hawkins is signing with the New England Patriots, Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reported on Thursday afternoon. Atlanta selected Hawkins in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft out of California.

The 26-year-old spent three and a half seasons with the Falcons before getting released six games into the 2023 season. Hawkins racked up four interceptions over 48 games in Atlanta.

Hawkins started 22 total games, including 16 starts in 2022, but he lost his spot in the starting lineup to Jessie Bates in 2023. The veteran then safety signed with the Los Angeles Chargers for the final 10 games of the 2023 season.

Now, Hawkins is headed to the new-look New England Patriots to play for head coach Jerod Mayo.

Report: Patriots make depth signing with former fourth-round pick safety

The Patriots add more depth to a talented safety room

The New England Patriots signed former Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers safety Jaylinn Hawkins on Thursday, per a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Hawkins was drafted by the Falcons in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft. He spent four seasons with the team before being waived in October 2023. He was officially claimed off waivers by the Chargers a day after his release. He recorded 14 combined tackles last season between the two teams.

New England is already strong at the safety position with players like Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers expected to lead the way. However, depth is important, and Hawkins would be able to provide that for the Patriots.

He is also only 26 years old, which could allow him additional time to develop at the position.

New England’s offseason has been about retaining the talent they have, as well as taking care of loose ends. Hawkins is a smart addition to an already loaded safety room.

Panthers reportedly signing free-agent S Jaylinn Hawkins to 1-year deal

Per NFL Network, the Panthers are signing S Jaylinn Hawkins to a one-year deal.

The Carolina Panthers might’ve just landed a ball hawk.

According to NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo, the team is expected to sign free-agent safety Jaylinn Hawkins to a one-year deal.

Hawkins was selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons. He spent three and a half seasons with Carolina’s NFC South rivals—recording 22 starts over 48 games with 121 combined tackles, half a sack, four interceptions, nine passes defensed and a forced fumble.

Atlanta would waive Hawkins on Oct. 17, 2023. He’d later be claimed by the Los Angeles Chargers, who gave the 26-year-old defensive back three starts over 10 games to close out the campaign.

If Hawkins puts pen to paper, he’d be the third free-agent addition to the Carolina secondary over the past few weeks. The Panthers also signed fellow safety Jordan Fuller, who spent his first four NFL seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, as well as former Buffalo Bills cornerback Dane Jackson.

The Chargers had their second practice before Sunday’s matchup with the Chiefs on Thursday.

Los Angeles opened the 21-day activation window for both wide receiver Jalen Guyton (knee) and defensive tackle Otito Ogbonnia (knee). They were in individual drills and were listed as limited.

After being listed as a non-participant in the estimated injury report, safety Alohi Gilman (heel) practiced in a limited capacity.

Jaylinn Hawkins carted off during first practice with Chargers

Ex-Falcons safety Jaylinn Hawkins was carted off the field during his first practice with the Los Angeles Chargers

It’s been a tough week for former Falcons safety Jaylinn Hawkins. After getting waived by Atlanta on Tuesday, Hawkins was claimed by the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, the former fourth-round pick was carted off the field during his first practice in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon.

It’s just another tough break for Hawkins, who had worked his way up to a starting role in 2022 before getting replaced in the lineup by Jessie Bates in 2023.

Hopefully, the 26-year-old’s injury isn’t too severe as he still has plenty of upside. Hawkins reportedly had multiple teams put waiver claims in following his release from the Falcons.

Hawkins had back-to-back seasons with two interceptions in 2021 and 2022. Last year, the fourth-year safety started 16 games for Atlanta, finishing with two interceptions, six passes defended, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Chargers claim safety Jaylinn Hawkins, place Raheem Layne on injured reserve

The Chargers shored up the safety room.

In wake of Raheem Layne’s season-ending injury, the Chargers claimed Jaylinn Hawkins off waivers from the Falcons.

To make room for Hawkins, Los Angeles placed Layne on the injured reserve list.

Hawkins, a 2020 fourth-round pick, had 124 tackles, four interceptions, nine passes defended, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery across 48 games with 22 starts, most of them coming last season (16).

Hawkins spent his collegiate career at California, where he posted 158 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, ten interceptions, seven pass breakups and three forced fumbles.

Hawkins can play the deep part of the field, come down in the box and line up in the slot.

With Alohi Gilman still dealing with a heel injury, Hawkins could see the field as early as this weekend against the Chiefs.

Falcons free up $1.7M in cap space by cutting Jaylinn Hawkins

The Falcons freed up more salary cap space by releasing safety Jaylinn Hawkins on Tuesday

The NFL is an absolutely brutal business and fourth-year Falcons safety Jaylinn Hawkins saw the worst of it on Tuesday. Hawkins, who lost his starting job to Jessie Bates over the offseason, was released by the team.

Hawkins has started 22 games since entering the league in 2020, making 16 starts in 2022. The 26-year-old appeared in 48 total games for Atlanta and registered 124 tackles, nine passes defended and four interceptions.

According to Over The Cap‘s projections, cutting Hawkins frees up $1.7 million in cap space while adding $166,728 to the team’s dead money total. This would give the Falcon approximately $7.7 million in cap space to make a potential move.

Fans began to speculate about possible moves when the team restructured Jake Matthews’ contract a few weeks ago. Check out 12 free-agent options for Atlanta.

Falcons recover fumble in end zone for TD after recovering Jeff Wilson fumble

A couple of fumbles on one play turned into an Atlanta Falcons TD

There was plenty of fumbling on one play in the San Francisco 49ers-Atlanta Falcons game on Sunday.

The 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo handed off to Jeff Wilson Jr., who fumbled the football.

It was recovered by A.J. Terrell and the Falcons’ DB took off for the end zone.

However, as he got near the goal line, Terrell lost the ball, too.

Fortunately for him, teammate Jaylin Hawkins was present and accounted for the football in the end zone.

After the PAT, the Falcons had a 14-0 lead over the NFC West leaders.

Falcons secondary lands in ‘serious flaws’ tier of PFF’s new rankings

The Falcons secondary was ranked 22nd overall by Pro Football Focus, landing in the “serious flaws” tier.

Despite playing in one of the NFL’s worst secondaries last season, Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell established himself as one of the best at his position. The former first-round pick earned second-team All-Pro honors in his second year out of Clemson.

While the future is obviously bright for Terrell, what about the rest of Atlanta’s secondary? On paper, it appears to have improved, mostly due to the addition of Pro Bowl cornerback Casey Hayward — who will give the Falcons a nice one-two punch on the outside.

It’s those other spots in the secondary, mainly at safety, where the questions remain.
