Overview

Penn State could potentially have a dynamic running back duo in the Class of 2022, if it can build an offensive line that allows it to reach its full potential. Having Nicholas Singleton in the recruiting class would have been perfectly good enough, but the addition of Kaytron Allen gives the Nittany Lions even more to look forward to with its running game in the years to come.

Like Singleton, Allen brings good size and stature to the running back position. Allen has the ideal size for a college running back and he should be a durable option on the ground for the Nittany Lions once he gets into the running back mix.

A scouting report from 247 Sports notes Allen offers a quick burst of speed and he has incredible vision and offensive awareness to identify his best opportunities in the heat of the moment. More importantly, he is a tough back to bring down because he has good stability and keeps his legs moving. And yes, he has good receiving skills so he could easily be used in a variety of ways in the Penn State offense.

Penn State’s running backs have not lived up to the hype in recent years for one reason or another. Despite having three running backs appear on the 2021 preseason Doak Walker Award watch list, not one player on Penn State’s roster managed to rush for 100 yards in a single game during the 2021 season. With the additions of Allen and Singleton to the recruiting class, Penn State should have the talent at the running back position to lead a solid running game in the next few years. But the success of Allen and any Penn State running back may fall on the success of the offensive line.

Trio from Penn State’s Class of 2022 named semifinalists for Maxwell award

Will this year’s Maxwell Football Club high school offensive player of the year be a Penn State recruit?

Penn State is preparing to sign one of the best recruiting classes in program history beginning in just a matter of weeks. The early signing period is two weeks away, and Penn State continues to be ranked among the best in the nation with its projected Class of 2022. And it is possible Penn State could have one of the offensive players of the year in high school about to make their way to Happy Valley next year.

The Maxwell Football Club released its list of 16 semifinalists for its Maxwell Football Club High School Offensive Player of the Year, and three commits to the Nittany Lions made the cut. Quarterback Drew Allar and running backs Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton all were named semifinalists for the national award. Singleton was the only player from Pennsylvania to be listed.

It would certainly be a great thing to see a future Penn State player taking home this high honor among some of the nation’s best high school players. But having three players named semifinalists is still a good way to support the idea that Penn State is closing in on signing an exciting class. A number of players in Penn State’s Class of 2022 look to be key players on the team in the years to come, some perhaps as early as next year.

Allar is perhaps one of the most notable names to watch in the Class of 2022. The long-time verbal commitment to James Franklin and Penn State has never backed away from his enthusiasm about joining the program, and some feel he could get to work for a push for some playing time as early as next season. The recent performance by Christian Veilleux may have thrown a wrench in that idea for some, but Allar is among the highest-rated players in the country on the recruiting services and it is not expected he will be coming to Penn State to stay on the sideline for too long.

Having two running backs make the semifinalist cut is an encouraging sign as well after this past season. Penn State failed to have a player rush for 100 yards in a game this season (although Franklin will remind you there is still one more game to play), although a good portion of the blame can fall on the offensive line’s inability to create space for running backs at times. Penn State has recruited talented running backs over the course of Franklin’s time at Penn State, and the commitments of Singleton and Allen will keep that trend going.

Let’s take a look at some highlights of these three in action this season…

Priority running back target chooses Penn State over Florida

Running back Kaytron Allen was prioritized by the UF coaching staff for most of this cycle until he committed to Penn State Friday.

Four-star running back Kaytron Allen sat near the top of Florida’s running backboard for the majority of this recruiting cycle. His name will most likely come off the board now after he committed to Penn State over Florida and Michigan State Friday.

Allen was a priority for coach Dan Mullen and running backs Greg Knox because he played nearby in Bradenton, Florida at IMG Academy. He also took an official visit to the Swamp the weekend of June 11.

However, after his commitment to the Nittany Lions, Florida will turn its attention to other running back targets like George Pettaway, Omarion Hampton, Terrance Gibbs and Jaylon Glover. The Gators plan to sign two running backs this cycle. The last tailback they signed out of high school was Nay’Quan Wright in 2019.

At this juncture of the recruiting cycle, Florida is viewed as the favorite for four-star Gibbs and three-star Glover. Both are expected for Friday Night Lights when the dead period is lifted at the end of July. It wouldn’t be surprising to see them commit after their visits that weekend.

2022 4-star RB Kaytron Allen picks Penn State over Michigan State

Michigan State is still looking to add a running back to their 2022 class after four-star Kaytron Allen picked Penn State on Friday night

Michigan State is still looking to add a running back to their 2022 class after four-star Kaytron Allen picked Big Ten rival Penn State over the Spartans on Friday night.

Michigan State missed out on one of the top running back prospects in Allen, who formerly committed to the Nittany Lions on Friday night. Allen also was reportedly considering Florida, Florida State and Georgia.

Allen is ranked as the No. 10 running back and No. 132 overall prospect in the 2022 class.

This is a tough blow since it appeared Michigan State was in a great position to land this major prospect. However, this shouldn’t come as a huge surprise with Penn State picking up crystal ball predictions for Allen in the last few weeks.

MSU target, 2022 4-star RB Kaytron Allen to commit this week

Michigan State target and four-star RB Kaytron Allen announced on Sunday that he will be committing on this upcoming week

[mm-video type=video id=01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x playlist_id=01eqbz825g32p3akwt player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x/01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x-94bc96c0600b72bfde06a5e50385bb0f.jpg]

One of the nation’s top running backs in the 2022 class is set to announce his college choice this upcoming week.

Michigan State target and four-star running back Kaytron Allen announced on Sunday that he will be committing on this upcoming Friday. Allen — who plays for IMG Academy in Florida — is ranked as the No. 10 running back and No. 127 overall prospect in the 2022 class by 247Sports.

Allen holds a scholarship offer from the Spartans and recently visited East Lansing. One of his IMG Academy teammates — Ade Willie — committed to Michigan State earlier this month so the Spartans are hoping that could help them land Allen as well.

Other programs that have offered Allen include Penn State, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, and Texas. It’s unknown at this point who exactly is still in the mix for Allen, however, Penn State is the projected favorites, according to 247Sports crystal ball predictions.

This high-priority running back target announces commitment date

Florida wants to take two running backs in the class of 2022 recruiting cycle. Running back Kaytron Allen will make a commitment Friday.

Florida fans who follow recruiting hoped the Gators ended the IMG curse last cycle. They finally landed a player from the high school football powerhouse in four-star defensive back Kamar Wilcoxson which could open the floodgates for more players from IMG to sign with the orange and blue.

It looked like it might’ve because the Gators are in the mix for three players from the Bradenton, Florida school — offensive tackle Tyler Booker, safety Kamari Wilson and running back Kaytron Allen.

Allen announced Sunday that he plans to make a commitment Friday to either Florida, Alabama, Georgia or Penn State.

[exco_embed id=”e5869bc6-faf6-4b7a-8c06-b5610c96a8fe”]

Florida wants to take two running backs this cycle and have targets like Allen, George Pettaway, Omarion Hampton, Terrance Gibbs and Jaylon Glover near the top of its board. Gibbs and Glover seem the most likely at this juncture of the class of 2022 recruiting cycle because the others are trending away including Allen.

He took an official visit to the Nittany Lions when the NCAA dead period was lifted at the beginning of June and came away super impressed with Penn State.

“They set the bar,” Allen said in June, according to 247Sports. “It’s more than what I expected, most definitely. I’m glad I took a visit there.”

Even after Penn State accepted a commitment from another running back, it hasn’t slowed down its interest in Allen.

It would be shocking to see Allen pick a school Friday besides the Nittany Lions. Florida will have to move its focus toward Gibbs and Glover who plan to visit the Swamp again for Friday Night Lights on July 30.

Three MSU football targets fans should keep an eye on

A few of Michigan State’s targets that could be making decisions soon

[mm-video type=video id=01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x/01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x-94bc96c0600b72bfde06a5e50385bb0f.jpg]

Michigan State fans saw a boom in recruiting throughout the month of June. The Spartans landed seven new 2022 commits during the month and have gotten raved reviews hosting recruits on visits.

The Spartans coaching staff is going to look on building that momentum that they have created for themselves so far and really push the class to the next level.

MSU has made an impression on a number of recruits and will be able to make a push to gain even more commitments in the coming weeks.

Let’s take a look at a few targets fans should keep an eye on:

Trio of 2022 prospects from IMG Academy visit Michigan State on Friday

Michigan State played host to a trio of highly-rated 2022 prospects from the IMG Academy of Bradenton, Fla. on Friday evening.

[mm-video type=video id=01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x/01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x-94bc96c0600b72bfde06a5e50385bb0f.jpg]

Michigan State played host to a trio of highly-rated 2022 prospects from the IMG Academy of Bradenton, Fla. on Friday evening.

Running back Kaytron Allen, wide receiver Shawn Miller and defensive back Ade Willie were all on campus on Friday visiting Michigan State. Each of the three prospects are garnering attention from power-five programs, with each previously receiving scholarships from Michigan State.

Of the three, Allen is rated the highest as a four-star prospect and the No. 10 running back in the 2022 class. Along with Michigan State, he holds scholarships from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Penn State and 29 other schools.

Miller and Willie are both three-star prospects on 247Sports. Miller is ranked as the No. 69 wide receiver in the class, and has received scholarship offers from Illinois, West Virginia, Arizona, Indiana and a few other programs. Willie is ranked as the No. 89 cornerback in the class and has been extended scholarship offers from Arizona, Boston College, Colorado, Virigina, West Virginia and a few other programs.

As Corey Robinson of 247Sports said in the tweet above, it would be great if Michigan State could somehow land all three of these IMG Academy teammates. That seems unlikely but I’m sure Mel Tucker would still love to add one or two of these prospects to his 2022 class.
