Penn State availability report for Illinois released

Penn State availability report: Daequan Hardy actuive, Harrison Wallace III listed as questionable vs. Illinois

Penn State is about to open up its Big Ten slate on the road at Illinois for a noon eastern kickoff on national TV, and the depth at wide receiver could be a slight concern for the matchup. Penn State’s player availability report for Week 3 against Illinois confirmed the Nittany Lions will be without wide receiver [autotag]Malick Meiga[/autotag] and [autotag]Harrison Wallace III[/autotag] is listed as questionable.

The big news with the latest player availability report from Penn State is cornerback [autotag]Daequan Hardy[/autotag], defensive tackle [autotag]Coziah Izzard[/autotag], and defensive end [autotag]Amin Vanover[/autotag] are all active.

Wallace III is Penn State’s second-leading receiver after the first two games of the season. Wallace is tied for a team-high 10 receptions and has 98 receiving yards.

Meiga has appeared in just one game this season, in which he caught 1 pass for 7 yards. This is the second game in a row Meiga, who contributes mostly on special teams will be out of action.

Penn State has also ruled out defensive end [autotag]Smith Vilbert[/autotag] for the game this weekend. Redshirt freshman defensive tackle [autotag]Kaleb Artis[/autotag] is also listed as questionable for the game this weekend against Illinois.

Illinois has a largely clean availability report. The only player on this week’s report from the Illini is defensive back Demetrius Hill, who will be out.

Overview:

Penn State has a young defensive line room and newcomer Kaleb Artis will bring a lot of traits to the table. It’s worth noting that we do not know the status of PJ Mustipher for next season. If he were to come back, that would be huge for Penn State, which has young talent.

Artis is a player who can make plays from anywhere on the defensive line. But, he excels primarily on the outside. Artis stands 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds. Penn State had a rotation of underclassmen play throughout the season barring the injury of Mustipher.

With a young core coming in, that leaves room for plenty of opportunity for one of them to step up and be the main guy, especially once Mustipher leaves.

Artis didn’t have too many offers coming in. Much of his offers came from the ACC. But, it eventually came down to him wanting to stay on the East Coast and play for James Franklin.

With a talented defensive line, The future is bright for that area, especially with the new defensive coordinator in Manny Diaz, who brings a lot of experience to the table and is arguably one of the best defensive coordinators in college football.

Big board: Penn State’s 2022 football recruiting class by position

Breaking down Penn State football’s Class of 2022 position by position.

Penn State’s Class of 2022 has long been recognized as one of the top classes in the nation. The latest (and greatest) recruiting class to be signed by James Franklin looks to add some tremendous quality and depth to various positions across the roster and has some players to really look forward to watching grow almost immediately.

For a long stretch in this recruiting cycle, Penn State had the nation’s top-ranked class, and it continued to be ranked highest among Big Ten schools up until shortly before the early signing period. But there is no disputing the ranking of Penn State’s Class of 2022 is proof Penn State has been hitting it hard on the recruiting trail this cycle.

Here is a breakdown of Penn State’s Class of 2022 broken down by position.

Penn State’s Class of 2022 is now ranked No. 2

Penn State’s latest recruiting efforts continue to pay off in a big way in the recruiting rankings for 2022

After a brilliant week of recruiting news, Penn State’s Class of 2022 continues to move up in the national rankings. And it didn’t have that far it could have moved. After coming out of the July 4th weekend with the nation’s No. 3 recruiting class according to the 247 Sports composite ranking, the Nittany Lions have moved up one spot.

According to the updated composite rankings from 247 Sports, Penn State has moved up to No. 2 in the nation, passing Notre Dame. The Irish fell one spot to occupy the ranking recently held by the Nittany Lions. Ohio State remains the nation’s recruiting leader with the highest-rated class featuring four five-star recruits in the Class of 2022.

Penn State’s recruiting ranking was given a healthy boost over the July 4th weekend with the additions of four-star defenders Tyreese Fearbry and Zane Durant. The weekend also saw the additions of linebacker Keon Wylie and defensive lineman Kaleb Artis. Penn State also added a JUCO commitment from JB Nelson. The big splash continued on Tuesday when four-star running back Nicholas Singleton from Reading, PA announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions.

Penn State’s Class of 2022 already included a number of four-star recruits as well including wide receivers Kaden Saunders, Mekhi Flowers, and Anthony Ivey, offensive tackle Drew Shelton, quarterback Drew Allar and defensive end Ken Talley, just to name a few.

As of the morning of July 9, here is a look at the top 10 in the recruiting rankings from 247 Sports;

  1. Ohio State
  2. Penn State
  3. Notre Dame
  4. LSU
  5. Oklahoma
  6. Florida State
  7. Georgia
  8. Texas
  9. Oregon
  10. Michigan

Asking Penn State to climb to No. 1 is unrealistic at this point, barring a completely unexpected collapse from Ohio State, but the Nittany Lions are easily on track to record the highest-rated recruiting class under head coach James Franklin yet. Keeping everyone in the class still requires work too between now and the early signing period in December. And it’s possible another school may eclipse Penn State at some point. But the Nittany Lions are in a terrific spot in the middle of the summer.

One of New York’s top recruits commits to Penn State’s Class of 2022

Penn State had a very busy July 4th with the addition of one of New York’s top football recruits

Penn State recruiting news was booming as often as the local fireworks shows on July 4. On a day that saw two four-star defensive linemen added to the Class of 2022, Penn State added one more defensive lineman to the recruiting haul with the commitment of Kaleb Artis.

Artis, a three-star recruit from Fresh Meadows, New York, made his commitment to the Nittany Lions on Sunday. Artis chose Penn State over offers from Auburn and Virginia, the other two schools he made official visits to in the month of June. Artis visited Penn State between visits to Aubrun and Virginia.

Penn State’s location and proximity to his home in New York appeared to play in Penn State’s favor as Artis came down to making his decision. And Penn State’s track record in developing defensive linemen certainly wasn’t to be overlooked.

Artis is ranked as a three-star recruit according to the 247 Sports composite ranking, and the No. 63 defensive lineman overall in the nation. But he is also the state of New York’s second-ranked recruit overall.

Combined with the addition of four-star defensive linemen Tyreese Fearbry and Zane Durant on Sunday, Penn State’s Class of 2022 was risen to No. 3 in the nation according to the most updated 247 Sports composite team rankings. Ohio State remains on top following their own big recruiting news on Sunday, but Franklin has Penn State in a position to roar back after a relatively down year in recruiting due to the size of the Class of 2021.

Badgers offer 2022 three-star defensive tackle

Recruiting news has slowed up a bit recently after Paul Chryst and the Wisconsin Badgers landed a major commitment from 2021 five-star offensive tackle Nolan Rucci.

Aside from four-star safety Braelon Allen reclassifying and joining the program’s loaded class of 2021, nothing really of note has happened.

Well, that changed today as the Badgers offered 2022 three-star defensive tackle Kaleb Artis.

The New York native stands 6’5,” weighs in at a whopping 270 pounds and is currently ranked by 247Sports as the No. 386 recruit in the class of 2022, the No. 33 defensive tackle and the No. 2 player from New York.

Chryst and company are currently without a commit in the class of 2022 after Allen joined the 2021 group.

Nevertheless, Artis definitely fits the bill as a big-time talent to fill the nose guard position in Madison for Jim Leonhard’s defense.
