What Class of 2022 recruit flipped from Penn State to Maryland?

Maryland managed to flip a Penn State commit in the early signing period

There wasn’t a whole lot to lose sleep over with Penn State’s Class of 2022 as the early signing period opened on Wednesday. While one JUCO player will be hopping on board later on during the next signing period in February, the biggest setback for Penn State may have been losing one commitment to a division rival in the days leading up to the early signing period.

Andre Roye, an offensive lineman who had been committed to Penn State, officially signed with Maryland on Wednesday, flipping from the Nittany Lions to the Terrapins despite suggesting earlier in the week he would probably still be signing with Penn State.

Roye’s flip from Penn State to Maryland isn’t necessarily the biggest shocker, and certainly less stunning than witnessing the nation’s top-ranked player flipping from Florida State to Jackson State. Roye, a three-star recruit, is a native from Baltimore, so he was always on the radar for Maryland. A chance to stay closer to home is also sometimes too good to pass up if you feel comfortable in the spot.

Roye had left the door open for a late flip after a late official visit to USC last weekend, when he suggested he may still be heading to Penn State. USC extended a scholarship offer just one week ago.

this is just another reminder that high school players have a lot going on in their recruiting process. As noted by 247 Sports, Roye was seemingly all over the place with his process. Whether by design or simply just having a change of opinions at any given moment, it is important to remember just how much pressure comes with this level of decision for a high school student.

Big board: Penn State’s 2022 football recruiting class by position

Breaking down Penn State football’s Class of 2022 position by position.

Penn State’s Class of 2022 has long been recognized as one of the top classes in the nation. The latest (and greatest) recruiting class to be signed by James Franklin looks to add some tremendous quality and depth to various positions across the roster and has some players to really look forward to watching grow almost immediately.

For a long stretch in this recruiting cycle, Penn State had the nation’s top-ranked class, and it continued to be ranked highest among Big Ten schools up until shortly before the early signing period. But there is no disputing the ranking of Penn State’s Class of 2022 is proof Penn State has been hitting it hard on the recruiting trail this cycle.

Here is a breakdown of Penn State’s Class of 2022 broken down by position.

Two Penn State football recruiting targets set commitment dates

Can Penn State put the finishing touches on its Class of 2022 and begin setting the table for 2023 with a pair of upcoming commitment announcements?

Two Penn State recruiting targets have set their commitment dates for the 2022 and 2023 class. The Nittany Lions continue to impress with their loaded class of 2022. Yesterday, they added a three-star safety out of Maryland, Kevin Winston. They even gained some momentum for their 2023 recruiting class by making the top four of four-star tight end Ty Lockwood.

Today, there are two more players to watch from both classes, both setting their commitment dates. The first one is FS/WR Adon Shuler from Irvington, New Jersey. The Nittany Lions continue to recruit versatility, as they added S/WR Cristian Driver, who committed to Penn State last week.

Shuler, a class of 2023 recruit, has set his commitment date for August 15thThe crystal ball predictions have Notre Dame at the top of the realm, but Penn State is in a tight race with them and Maryland

The next player to watch adds to their loaded 2022 class, and that is three-star offensive lineman Andre Roye from Baltimore, Maryland. There are no crystal ball predictions, but Roye has garnered a lot of interest from the Nittany Lions. Roye is the 10th ranked offensive lineman in the state of Maryland and ranked 43 in the nation at his position.

Roye has set his commitment date for September 22nd, according to his Twitter.

Penn State had a busy month of July recruiting. As we begin a new month, their work is just getting started. So far, the future is looking very bright for Penn State football.
