Texas LB Juwan Mitchell does not feel comfortable representing UT

Following a meeting with interim Texas President and AD, Longhorns linebacker releases statement that he does not feel comfortable.

It was reported by Brian Davis of the Austin-American Statesman that athletic director Chris Del Conte and interim Texas President Jay Hartzell met with the team on Wednesday night. No details have been released on how the meeting went or what will come of the meeting. The players have expressed their concerns with a list of demands that they wanted addressed by the school leadership.

Following the meeting, Texas linebacker Juwan Mitchell released a statement on his twitter account.

We put our blood, sweat, and tears in everyday so the city of Austin can enjoy their Saturdays. For ONCE, we decide to voice our opinions about things that can help better the community. It seems they only got our front but not our backs. People who want to create change, don’t care how much money can be lost, don’t care about who hates them, or any bad outcomes that may happen. The only thing on your mind should be EQUALITY. When I look in that mirror in the morning I want to tell myself I did the RIGHT thing. That should be everyone mindsets. It’s not about blacks vs whites, or cops vs blacks. ITS ABOUT DOING WHAT’S RIGHT!

With that being said, I do not feel comfortable representing The University of Texas.

It remains unclear what that means for Mitchell or any of the Longhorn players who were in attendance at the meeting. Early this year he put himself in the transfer portal but withdrew his name. It could be a situation where he does that again but only time will tell.

ESPN: How Texas can become a national title contender

A four “if” plan for the Texas Longhorns to get back into the title hunt? ESPN lays it all out.

The Texas Longhorns seem to stay in the national spotlight despite the lack of consistent performances from the football team over the last decade. It has been over 10 years since their last conference championship in 2009. Before that it was 2005. For all of their success during the Mack Brown era, he only produced two conference champions despite all of those 10 win seasons. Nine consecutive to be exact. However, Texas is still viewed as top tier program according to ESPN.

According to a recent article from ESPN they laid out a plan for Texas to get back into the title hunt. A four “if” plan that could return them to prominence.

The first part of the plan revolves around such a young defense.

If … 2019 pain means 2020 gain for the secondary.

The stats were much more pessimistic about Texas than the eyeballs last season, and the stats were eventually proved correct. But those same numbers are quite a bit higher on the Longhorns this time around. Why? Experience. This defense had a ridiculously young spine (tackles, ILBs, safeties) last season, and the sophomore-heavy secondary suffered a run of injuries as well. The Horns now return 10 defensive backs who logged triple-digit snaps and add a new batch of blue-chippers. This unit should be both talented and experienced enough to thrive.

Todd Orlando is now gone and Chris Ash steps up to take the defensive mantle. Ash will be tasked with implementing a new scheme. Changing from a defensive scheme that many felt did the defense any favors. Just ask former Longhorn Malcolm Roach. Add in the veterans like Caden Sterns, B.J. Foster and D’Shawn Jamison among others. For Texas to take the leap, it will start on that side of the ball.

Provided Sterns and Foster can stay healthy this upcoming season, the defense on the back end should be much improved. Sterns showed so much promise as a freshman leading the team with four interceptions. Jamison picked up that mantle in 2019. Both need to be able to create more turnovers to help out the defense in 2020. They also lost a leader in Brandon Jones who finished second in interceptions.

Longhorns receiver Brennan Eagles states he won’t play another snap

Texas Longhorns wide receiver states that he won’t player another snap due to civil rights of black Americans being violated.

There have been a lot of statements released in light of what is going on in the world today. So many black athletes have stepped up to speak out against police brutality and mistreatment aimed toward African Americans in our country. The latest to speak out was Texas Longhorns wide receiver Brennan Eagles who said that he “won’t play another snap knowing what is going on in our society.”

“Okay so for all my brothers out there that are student athletes, do you really think athletics should be a man focus right now during this time that we live in? At the end of the day if that is the main focus i [sic] find you blind to the fact that your platform can change this,” Eagles tweeted. Thousands of people come to watch for Entertainment, revenue is built from that, money is generated from us. If it wasn’t for athletics we would’t have coaches/trainers. Doctors wouldn’t perform as many surgeries, etc. the list goes on. I’ll be damned if you think I’ll play Another snap with the platform i have that effects majority of people that contribute to the sport who don’t actually play. Know your value is all I’m saying. Athletics brings people together all over but at the end of the day I’m not going to play another snap knowing what’s going on in our society due to color and the system being broken… i just can’t…….let’s look at the bigger picture. Don’t care if you yellow or blue that goes for every athlete/Supporter out there.

Current linebacker DeMarvion Overshown commented that he stood with him and Juwan Mitchell also voiced his support for Eagles’ comments.

Brennan Eagles is their top returning wide receiver from last season after Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson made their way to the NFL. Eagles was the 6th ranked player in the state of Texas and 10th wide receiver according to 247Sports composite rankings in the 2018 recruiting class.

According to 247Sports, Herman was recently on the HERD with Collin Cowherd and showed his support for his players.

“I told our players I don’t have their back, I have their front. ‘You tell me what to do, what wall to run through, I’ll run through it, I’ll make a hole so big that you guys can walk through it.’ Because that’s how passionately we feel, because when you love somebody the way we love our players and you see them hurt and you see them angry and you see them frustrated, much like a parent, you want to take all of that off of their heart and you want to put it all on yourself and be there for them and provide some guidance for them,” Herman said. “Hopefully us here at Texas we won’t be forgotten on our message on this topic. In a short few weeks, hopefully us a program and our individuals within our program can help truly affect real change in the system.”

Texas LB Juwan Mitchell withdraws from NCAA transfer portal

Fortunately for the Longhorns, linebacker Juwan Mitchell has decided to return to Texas and offers much needed depth at inside linebacker.

On Jan. 29, it was reported that a promising, young linebacker with starting experience would be entering his name in the NCAA transfer portal to explore other opportunities.

Fortunately for the Longhorns, they now have much needed depth at inside linebacker as Juwan Mitchell ultimately decided to return to Texas for another season.

Mitchell enrolled at Texas in June of 2019 from Butler Community College where he was an all-conference linebacker who ranked No. 2 on ESPN’s JC50 and the No. 1 player at his position.

In his first season with the Longhorns, Mitchell appeared in 11 games, including three starts. He finished the 2019 season with 39 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, and four pass breakups.

With fellow linebacker Ayodele Adeoye suffering a foot injury that required surgery this offseason, Mitchell has an opportunity to significantly climb the depth chart ahead of the 2020 season.

Texas linebacker chooses to enter NCAA transfer portal

A young, promising inside linebacker for Texas has chosen to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

The Longhorns will be losing a young, promising member of the defense.

According to national college football reporter Max Olson, Texas linebacker Juwan Mitchell has chosen to leave Austin and explore other opportunities.

Mitchell enrolled at Texas in June of 2019. Formerly with Butler Community College, Mitchell was an all-conference linebacker who ranked No. 2 on ESPN’s JC50 and No. 1 at linebacker before continuing his playing career at Texas.

In his first year as a Longhorn, Mitchell played in six games and logged 24 tackles, 19 solo stops, 3.5 tackles for loss, and three sacks. He also showcased a season-high seven tackles against TCU.

After fellow linebacker Ayodele Adeoye suffered a foot injury requiring surgery this offseason, Texas now has minimal depth at inside linebacker.
