On this day: Champion forward James Posey born; Cs take 76ers to 3OT in 2006

Boston Celtic champion forward James Posey was born on this day in 1977, and the team took the Sixers to three extra periods in 2006.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, champion small forward James Posey was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1977.

Although he only played for one year with the team (2007-08), his contribution off the bench was key for the Celtics in both the regular season, when he averaged 7.4 points, 4.4 points, a steal and just under a block per game, and in the 2008 NBA Playoffs, when he averaged 6.7 points, 3.6 boards and a steal per game. His key performance in Game 2 of the 2008 NBA Finals (versus the Los Angeles Lakers) in particular comes to mind.

In that game, his and Paul Pierce’s free throws in the final 30 seconds of the fourth quarter decided the game for Boston.

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 41

Today’s installment focuses on the 10 players who wore No. 41 over the years as of Aug. 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 10 players who wore No. 41 over the years as of Sep. 2023.

On this day: Ex-Celtic champion forward James Posey signs; Jeff Green born

On this day in 2007, former Boston Celtics forward James Posey signed with the team, and in 1986, ex-Celtic Jeff Green was born.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, forward James Posey signed with the Boston Celtics as a free agent in 2007, adding some heft on the wing to what was already clearly a title contender after the team had added Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett in blockbuster trades earlier that summer.

Posey played his college ball with the Xavier Musketeers and was drafted 18th overall in the first round of the 1999 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets. The 6-foot-8 swingman had also played stints with the Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies, and Miami Heat before joining the Celtics on this day all those years ago.

The Cleveland, Ohio native inked a deal worth roughly $6.67 million over two seasons, with the final season a player option.

Three Boston Celtics alumni changing positions in 1999 NBA class redraft

Let’s take a look at which Celtics alumni landed where.

As Hoops Hype’s staff keep themselves busy reassessing the draft orders of the last few decades over the years, there are always a fair number of Boston Celtics alumni making moves in their re-drafts as a result.

In the H/H’s reassessment of the 1999 NBA draft class, a total of three Boston alumni ended up seeing their draft stock shift with the benefit of hindsight lifting their fortunes. And while they won’t see any pay raises or anything else of that sort given the fictitious nature of such an exercise, it’s also nice to see this group get their flowers, too.

Let’s take a look at which Celtics alumni landed where.

Celtics’ James Posey on Boston’s miracle comeback vs. the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 4 of the 2008 NBA Finals

A 35-14 deficit in the contest’s first quarter soon became a 24-point chasm by the second half of the game, and the Celtics’ hopes of taking a 3-1 series lead seemed out of the question.

While it might seem like it was preordained in retrospect, for a hot second on June 12, 2008, it seemed the Boston Celtics’ hopes to win Banner 17 might be about to go sideways when they fell into a deep hole early against the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 4 of the 2008 NBA Finals.

A 35-14 deficit in the first quarter soon became a 24-point chasm by the second half. The Celtics’ hopes of taking a 3-1 series lead seemed out of the question. But with the benefit of hindsight, we know that is not what happened. Boston instead mounted a historic comeback to win, 97-91.

To talk about that fateful night, former Celtic James Posey recently sat down to talk over the historic comeback with Basketball News.com.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear his memory of that magic night.

Champion Boston Celtics alumnus James Posey to join Washington Wizards as assistant coach for 2022-23 season

The 2008 Celtics titlist has been carving out a career in the coaching ranks since retiring as a player.

Champion Boston Celtics alumnus James Posey is going to be back in the NBA as an assistant coach according to recent reporting from ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski. Per Woj, the former Celtics forward will join the Washington Wizards coaching staff under head coach Wes Unseld, Jr.

Posey, a member of the Celtics’ 2008 title team with Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce, made the leap to coaching with the Cleveland Cavaliers after retiring as a player, starting as an assistant with their G League developmental affiliate, the Canton Charge. He would then join Ty Lue as an assistant with the parent club, spending five seasons with the Cavs before joining the University of Virginia women’s basketball program.

The two-time champ (he also won a ring with the Miami Heat in 2006) will bring his 12-year playing career and more than a half-decade coaching career to bear with the Wiz in the 2022-23 NBA season.

Former Celtics swingman James Posey lands college coaching job

James Posey, a key role player on the 2008 Celtics championship team, has accepted a job as a college assistant coach.

Former Boston Celtics swingman James Posey, a member of the franchise’s 2008 NBA championship team, has been hired as an assistant coach with the University of Virginia women’s basketball program.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to join the coaching staff of the women’s basketball team at the University of Virginia,” Posey told VirginiaSports.com. “I look at this opportunity as a blessing as I get to be a part of a program with great history and work alongside great basketball minds with coach Thompson and staff. I’m looking forward to drawing from my years of playing and coaching experience to bring a positive contribution to the program.”

Posey averaged 7.4 points and 4.4 rebounds for the Celtics in 2007-08. He scored in double figures six times off the bench that postseason, including 18 points in Game 4 of the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Posey also played for Denver, Miami, New Orleans and Indiana during a 12-year NBA playing career. He averaged 8.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game during his career, also winning the 2006 NBA title with the Heat.

Posey boasts prior bench experience as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2014-19. The Cavs won the 2016 NBA championship during Posey’s tenure there.

Champion Celtics forward, NBA assistant James Posey very happy with Udoka hire

Champion forward and former NBA assistant coach James Posey celebrated the hiring of Udoka as head coach of his former team.

Champion Boston Celtics forward James Posey spilled some ink recently on the hiring of Ime Udoka to the top job of the team he won one of his two titles with in 2008, lauding his peer in the coaching ranks but also supportive of the hire on a more personal level.

Posey, who went into coaching himself after hanging up his jersey as a player, had some heartfelt words to share on the hire given the glass ceiling he believes still exists in the NBA for players of color. Writing for BasketballNews.com, the former Celtic swingman characterized the Udoka hire as a positive development for the league.

“The NBA still has a long, long way to go as it relates to opportunities being given to Black head coaches,” he began, “but one thing I can say is that, at least with respect to Brad Stevens and the Boston Celtics, we’ve taken a step in the right direction.”
