Titans place Monty Rice on PUP, sign Joshua Kalu among 5 moves

The Titans made five roster moves on Saturday.

The Tennessee Titans have reunited with a familiar face and also placed three players on the Physically Unable to Perform list with training camp just days away on July 27.

Per the team, the Titans have agreed to terms with defensive back Joshua Kalu, who spent three seasons with Tennessee from 2018-2020. Kalu will compete for one of the backup roster spots in the secondary.

In order to make room for Kalu, the Titans cut defensive back Rodney Clemons, which was reported earlier in the day.

On the injury front, the Titans placed three players on the PUP list, including linebacker Monty Rice, tight end Tommy Hudson, and kicker Caleb Shudak. All three players can be activated off the list at any time before the start of the season.

Rice’s rookie campaign was cut short due to what was originally called an ankle injury, but we found out this offseason that it was in fact an Achilles injury. It remains to be seen when he’ll be cleared.

Hudson (leg) and Shudak (leg) both suffered unspecified leg injuries during mandatory minicamp.

18 injured or absent Giants account for over $33 million in salary cap space

A look at 18 injured or absent members of the New York Giants and their respective cap hits totaling more than $33 million in space.

The New York Giants have under $3 million in available salary cap space, according to Spotrac. And part of the reason for that slim margin is due to an overwhelming number of injured or absent players.

Sixteen players currently reside on injured reserve and that does not take into account the number of players that have been waived with injury settlements. Additionally, the Giants have one player (running back Gary Brightwell) on the Reserve/COVID-19 list and one player (center Jonotthan Harrison) on the Practice Squad/Injured list.

Let’s not even talk about the players eating up a ton of dead cap space.

Below is a look at the 18 injured or absent Giants and how much cap space they account for.

Giants place three players on injured reserve

The New York Giants have placed OL Kyle Murphy, LB T.J. Brunson and DB Joshua Kalu on injured reserve.

The New York Giants placed another player on injured reserve on Monday.

Backup interior offensive lineman Kyle Murphy, who injured his ankle in Saturday’s preseason loss to the Jets, is joining linebacker T.J. Brunson (knee) and defensive back Joshua Kalu (pec) who were placed on IR earlier in the day.

The league has changed the rules regarding IR. Teams are now allowed to return as many players as they want from IR. Players sent to injured reserve (or the reserve/NFI – non-football injury – list) before the final roster cuts on 4:00 p.m. on September 1st will not be eligible to return during the 2021 season.

That will be the case for Murphy, Kalu and Brunson. All three are done for the year.

Those placed on IR after the 53-man rosters are finalized however, can be brought back. Players placed on IR must stay there for a minimum of three weeks, istead of six, which was the timeline last year.

Murphy, due to the thinning ranks along the offensive line, had a legitimate shot to secure a roster spot this summer. He was signed last April as a UDFA out of Rhode Island. He was cut in camp but was immediately re-signed to the practice squad.

Murphy was signed to the Giants’ active roster on November 13.

Giants’ T.J. Brunson out for season after tearing ACL

New York Giants LB T.J. Brunson suffered a torn ACL and DB Joshua Kalu a torn pectoral muscle, and both are likely out for the season.

Injury news has gone from bad to worse for the New York Giants following their 12-7 preseason-opening loss to the New York Jets on Saturday night.

Although head coach Joe Judge expressed some level of optimism following the game, that was not realized as news trickled in on Sunday morning.

Linebacker T.J. Brunson has been lost for the season after suffering a torn ACL, the team announced.

“It’s unfortunate. Sometimes that’s the nature of the game. You don’t wanna see any player on either team get hurt. You always want every team to come out completely healthy,” Judge told reporters following the game.

Brunson, a seventh-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, was vying for a spot at linebacker — a position where the Giants already lack some depth.

In addition to Brunson, the Giants also announced that defensive back Joshua Kalu suffered a torn pectoral muscle. He, too, is likely out for the season.

Both Brunson and Kalu had solid odds of making the team for their depth and special teams prowess but now, as the Giants say all too often in recent years, it’s time for the next man to step up.

Giants’ Todd Davis retires, Blake Martinez activated

New York Giants LB Todd Davis, who was signed over the weekend, has retired. Meanwhile, LB Blake Martinez has been activated.

The New York Giants signed veteran linebacker Todd Davis over the weekend but his stay in East Rutherford was short-lived.

Similar to Kelvin Benjamin, who was released last week and subsequently returned to Florida indicating that his NFL career was over, Davis decided that he needed just a sip of Giants camp to call it quits.

The Giants announced on Tuesday that Davis has been placed on the Reserve/Retired list.

Meanwhile, the Giants also announced that linebacker Blake Martinez and safety Joshua Kalu have been activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Martinez was in pads at the start of Giants practice, although head coach Joe Judge acknowledged that the defensive captain would be on somewhat of a pitch count.

“He won’t take every rep that he’d normally take,” Judge told reporters.

Finally, the Giants placed wide receiver Derrick Dillon the Reserve/Injured list.

Giants place Blake Martinez, Joshua Kalu on Reserve/COVID-19 list

The New York Giants have placed linebacker Blake Martinez and safety Joshua Kalu on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

As expected, the New York Giants activated rookie wide receiver Kadarius Toney from the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Tuesday.

“Well, [Toney is] with us today in the building, so he’s back with us. We have a number of guys for different reasons that we’re actually going to take them a little bit slower,” head coach Joe Judge told reporters. “Obviously, coming off of that protocol as we learned last year with the number of players on our team throughout the season, we’re going to go and move them around the field and make sure that he’s ready to go, then we’ll start integrating with our team. We’re not going to go ahead and rush anything to get in the process.”

The “number of guys” Judge was referring to were linebacker Blake Martinez and safety Joshua Kalu. Both players landed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list after testing positive away from the facility this summer.

“We had a couple guys who had some exposure to it and had to quarantine throughout this point. Some guys who had some issues this summer, I’m not going to go into specifics unless they’re on the list right there,” Judge said before the transaction was made official. “But, you know, there’s a couple guys that have come off that we’re going to go ahead and make sure that we’re doing the right thing by them in terms of the adjustments to training they had to make the last few weeks.”

Depending on vaccination status, Martinez and Kalu could be back as quickly as Toney.

Ex-Titans DBs Joshua Kalu, Chris Milton sign with Giants

Two more former Tennessee Titans DBs are going to the New York Giants.

Two more former Tennessee Titans defensive backs, Joshua Kalu and Chris Milton, have signed on to play for the New York Giants in free agency, the team announced on Tuesday.

They will join other former Titans defensive backs such as Adoree’ Jackson and Logan Ryan in the Big Apple. Ryan was inked by New York last offseason, and Jackson was brought aboard in 2021.

Milton had spent the last two seasons and Kalu the last three in Tennessee, both serving as key contributors on special teams. Milton in particular has been lauded for his skills as a special teamer during his time in the NFL.

Earlier in the day, the Titans made their own move secondary and special teams move agreeing to terms with veteran safety and former New York Jets captain, Matthias Farley.

Farley is the second significant addition the Titans have made to their special teams this offseason, as new outside linebacker Ola Adeniyi also figures to factor into the equation in that role.

Titans players and fans react to 35-24 AFC Championship loss to Chiefs

Players and fans took to social media after the loss.

The 2019 season was a long and winding road for the Tennessee Titans.

After a 2-4 start, the team totally turned things around, benching former starting quarterback Marcus Mariota in favor of Ryan Tannehill, who ignited the offense in a way almost no one thought to be possible.

But the team’s Cinderella Story of a season met its end on Sunday in Arrowhead Stadium as the Titans fell 35-24 to a Kansas City Chiefs team they had defeated 35-32 back in November.

Five standouts from Titans’ 35-32 win over Chiefs

Here’s a look at five of those names.

The Tennessee Titans (5-5) evened out their record and put on one of the most thrilling performances in Week 10 as they defeated the visiting Kansas City Chiefs, 35-32 in Nissan Stadium on Sunday.

It was a competitive game filled with big plays on both sides, and several players stood out.

Here’s a look at five of those names.

1. QB Ryan Tannehill.

Tannehill continues to be efficient with the reins of the offense in his hands, and was a crucial part of guiding the Titans to the win. He was 13-of-19 passing for 181 yards and two touchdowns. He also had three rushes for 37 yards.
