Giants place Joshua Ezeudu on IR, reunite with Tyre Phillips

The New York Giants have placed OL Joshua Ezeudu on IR and signed OL Tyre Phillips from the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad.

The New York Giants continued to tweak and augment their embattled offensive line on Tuesday signing Tyre Phillips from the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad and Joshua Miles from the practice squad of the Atlanta Falcons.

Both players were added to the active roster. To make room for the duo, the Giants placed Joshua Ezeudu (toe) on injured reserve. They already had an open spot on the 53-man roster after waiving Jalen Mayfield on Monday.

This is Phillips’ secede stint with the Giants. He spent all of last season and training camp this year with the team before being released. He was signed by the Eagles before the season.

Miles was a seventh-round selection of the Arizona Cardinals out of Morgan State in 2019 and played four seasons for the Cards, appearing in 17 games. He was signed to the Falcons’ practice squad before the season after being cut by them in training camp.

One move many anticipated, the adding of Justin Pugh to the active roster, has not occurred as of yet. As a practice squad player, he can be signed by any team to their active roster.

Finally, after clearing waivers, Mayfield was added back to the team’s practice squad, filling the spot vacated when the Carolina Panthers signed defensive back Alex Smith.

Endzone again eludes Giants in 14-9 loss to Bills

The New York Giants failed to score from the 1-yard line to end each half on Sunday, ultimately falling to the Buffalo Bills, 14-9.

The New York Giants faced off against the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York on Sunday Night Football in Week 6 of the 2023 NFL season.

It was the Giants’ fourth prime-time game of this young season.

The Giants came into the game 0-3 in prime time, 1-4 overall, and the only NFL team that had yet to run an offensive play with the lead this season.

Some of that changed on Sunday night, but the Giants still couldn’t overcome the injuries and adversity enough to pull out a win.

But it wasn’t from a lack of trying.

Stock up, down after Giants’ 31-16 loss to Dolphins

Whose stock is up and whose is down following the New York Giants’ Sunday afternoon loss to the Miami Dolphins?

The New York Giants were soundly beaten by the Miami Dolphins in Week 5, falling by a score of 31-16. They lost quarterback Daniel Jones to a neck injury in the process and are now 1-4 to start the season.

Things get no easier for the Giants as they face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football in Week 6. But before we look ahead, we must look back.

Whose stock is up and whose is down after the Week 5 loss? Let’s take a look.

Giants’ Joshua Ezeudu was left in tears after Week 5 loss, Daniel Jones injury

New York Giants OL Joshua Ezeudu was in tears following Sunday’s loss, overcome with guilt for the injury suffered by QB Daniel Jones.

Following a Week 4 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football, New York Giants offensive lineman Joshua Ezeudu sat quietly at his locker, staring off into space for an extended period of time.

The Giants had just surrendered 11 combined sacks and were humiliated on national television.

On Sunday, the Giants were again embarrassed, this time courtesy of the Miami Dolphins, who recorded seven combined sacks en route to a 31-16 victory that wasn’t even that close.

Adding injury to the insult, quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a neck injury and was forced to leave the game. It was Ezeudu who allowed the hit.

Ezeudu was immediately pulled from the game and replaced by Matt Peart, but the negative emotions from that moment carried over.

Again sitting at his locker in disbelief, Ezeudu was overcome with guilt for the injury sustained by Jones. He tried to fight back tears but could not.

From the New York Daily News:

Giants left tackle Josh Ezeudu was in tears at his locker after Sunday’s 31-16 loss to the explosive Miami Dolphins. But Daniel Jones’ neck injury, postgame X-rays and scheduled Monday scan aren’t Ezeudu’s fault.

Jones has “pain” in his “sore” neck after Andrew Ginkel’s crushing fourth quarter sack because Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll didn’t build an offensive line to protect their most important asset after paying Jones like a franchise quarterback.

It’s not on a second-year player who couldn’t win a starting guard spot in training camp but was told to protect Jones’ blind side anyway when Andrew Thomas got hurt.

“I’m sorry, I can’t be late off the ball,” an emotional Ezeudu said he told Jones, via The Athletic. “He was just like, ‘It’s fine, but just keep on working.”

It would be easy to pile on Ezeudu for his mistake and the several other penalties called against him, but this is hardly his fault. He’s a reserve guard starting out of position at tackle because the Giants and general manager Joe Schoen failed to provide enough depth at the position. It was a glaring issue this offseason and even entering the season, but it went largely ignored.

The Giants are now paying the consequences for that oversight. They are on pace to set the NFL’s all-time record in sacks allowed and that pales in comparison to the danger they’re putting their quarterbacks in.

Not only was Jones forced to leave the game due to injury on Sunday, but his replacement, Tyrod Taylor, also got banged up. Luckily, he only had the wind knocked out of him but you can bet he feels all those hits on Monday morning.

What we learned from Giants’ 31-28 win over Cardinals

The New York Giants defeated the Arizona Cardinals, 31-28, in Week 2 and here’s some of what we learned from that game.

The New York Giants mounted an unbelievable comeback Sunday afternoon in their game versus the Arizona Cardinals to even their 2023 regular season record to 1-1.

Here are three quick things we learned from the Week 2 victory.

Studs and duds from Giants’ Week 2 win vs. Cardinals

Here’s a look at the studs and duds (and studly duds) from a 31-28 comeback victory for the New York Giants over the Cardinals in Week 2.

The New York Giants trailed by 20 points at halftime and 21 points early in the second half but managed to rally and complete a historic upset of the Arizona Cardinals to pick up their first win of the 2023 regular season.

The comeback was spurred on by quarterback Daniel Jones, who totaled nearly 400 yards and three touchdowns on the night — nearly all of it coming over the final quarter and a half.

With the win, the Giants essentially saved their season. However, the run will be shortlived as they have a quick turnaround and a Thursday night matchup with the San Francisco 49ers.

Here’s a look at some studs and duds (and studly duds) from the game.

Giants’ Andrew Thomas taking hamstring injury day-by-day

New York Giants LT Andrew Thomas seems to have avoided a long-term injury but is still taking things day-by-day.

New York Giants All-Pro left tackle Andrew Thomas sat out Wednesday’s practice session with a sore hamstring.

Thomas came out of Sunday night’s game against Dallas in the second half, a loss the Giants’ beleaguered offensive line can hardly afford. His status for this Sunday’s game versus the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale is up in the air.

“I’d put him in day-to-day,” head coach Brian Daboll told the media on Wednesday.

Thomas told reporters the same thing Daboll did and offered some hope that he might be able to play this week.

“They held me out today so we will see if I practice tomorrow and try to go from there,” Thomas said. “Right now, I am just taking it day-by-day. That’s the process that I have. It’s been feeling better since it first started when I first hurt it. Just giving it time and see how it does.”

Daboll said he is not inclined to move right tackle Evan Neal over to the left side to fill in for Thomas. It is more likely that if Thomas can’t go, the Giants will use the two players who spelled Thomas — Matt Peart or Joshua Ezeudu.

“We will practice some guys out here and we will be ready to go once Sunday rolls around,” Daboll said. “I’d say we’ve got enough guys to go out here and get some reps, and we’ll take a look at here the next few days.”

Thomas reminded everyone that it is a tough injury to over come for an offensive lineman.

“You definitely feel it,” he said. “Playing with a hamstring, trying to anchor, trying off the ball, it’s not easy, but like I said, everyone plays with injuries, try not to make excuses, just get healthy.”

With a quick turnaround in Week 3, it’s highly unlikely Thomas suits up against the Cardinals this Sunday.

Giants’ Brian Daboll: Battle at guard has been settled

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll says the guard battles have been settled but refuses to reveal the winners until Sunday night.

The New York Giants offensive line is one on the rise with an All-Pro left tackle in Andrew Thomas, another up-and-coming one on the right side in Evan Neal, and a promising center in John-Michael Schmitz.

What has Giants fans concerned are the two guard positions. Right guard is spoken for by veteran Mark Glowinski, but he had a rollercoaster of a year in 2022, struggling at times in pass protection.

This summer, the Giants had a rotation at left guard with Ben Bredeson, Joshua Ezuedu, and others such as Shane Lemieux.

On Friday, head coach Brian Daboll said the position has been ‘settled.’

When asked to elaborate on the decision, Daboll would not disclose any details.

“We’ll just get out there and be ready to play and the guys that will be out there will be ready to go,” he told reporters.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the revolving door still in effect the entire season. Bredeson has been starting in practices and in the preseason but the others have gotten plenty of reps, too. At one point, the Giants had Glowinski playing out of position.

I guess we’ll find out like the rest of the world come Sunday night who the guards will be.
