Jordan Burch named among ESPN’s biggest instant-impact transfers in 2023

Jordan Burch is expected to come to Eugene and have an immediate impact with the Ducks in 2023.

While it’s important to recruit players and be able to develop that talent on your roster across the span of a few years in college football, the introduction of the transfer portal over the past half-decade has really changed things. Now, if a team has a certain need to fill on the roster, or is interested in getting better at a certain position, they can hit the portal and find a ready-made player who can provide an instant impact to the team.

The Oregon Ducks have done a great job of doing this through the portal, with the latest example being former South Carolina edge rusher Jordan Burch, a former 5-star recruit who drew comparisons to Jadeveon Clowney coming out of high school.

When offering up some superlatives for transfer portal players this offseason, ESPN named Burch one of the most ready-made guys who can provide an instant impact in 2023:

The last time the Ducks brought in an edge defender with this type of physical tools, he was an impact presence. Burch, to be clear, is not Kayvon Thibodeaux, but as a five-star prospect in the 2020 class, he possesses impact ability. He is coming off his most productive season when he was among South Carolina’s leading tacklers and most disruptive pass-rushers. A defender with good length, power and body control, Burch can help boost a defense that ranked 115th among 131 FBS teams in sacks. He has yet to fully meet lofty expectations but looks to be headed to Eugene after beginning to realize some of that touted potential and could be an impact addition for Oregon.

Burch isn’t the only transfer who comes to Eugene with the chance to put up big numbers in 2023. The Ducks also got top OT Ajani Cornelius from Rhode Island, as well as S Evan Williams (Fresno State), WR Traeshon Holden (Alabama), LB Jestin Jacobs (Iowa), and CB Khyree Jackson (Alabama) as well, among many others.

How Oregon’s DL looks with Jordan Burch’s commitment, Brandon Dorlus’ return

In the last week, former 5-star DL Jordan Burch committed to the Ducks, and Brandon Dorlus announced his return. Oregon’s DL could be special in 2023.

Going into the offseason for the Oregon Ducks, one of the biggest areas of concern was on the defensive line. While that unit played well in 2022, there were a lot of question marks about who would be returning for the 2023 season.

Defensive end DJ Johnson announced quickly after the end of the regular season that he would be declaring for the NFL Draft and opting out of the bowl game. It was also believed that Brandon Dorlus would do the same, and guys like Casey Rogers, Taki Taimani, and Popo Aumavae had yet to make their future intentions clear.

This past week has been an endless source of good news on that front for the Ducks. It started out on Sunday with Dorlus announcing that he would be coming back for one more year, and continued on Tuesday with Rogers announcing that he would do the same. Wednesday provided the fireworks, with South Carolina defensive lineman Jordan Burch, a former 5-star recruit and the No. 1 ranked player in the transfer portal, announcing that he would commit to the Ducks, giving Lanning one of the best DL in the nation.

We also got news from Aumavae, who has been granted an injury waiver and will be returning for one last season in Eugene as well.

With all of this news, I figured it would be a great time to look at the defensive line as a whole and try to project how things will shake up in 2023. Some of the aforementioned guys will likely announce their future intentions in the next week, and a few others may choose to transfer to other schools.

Let’s take a look at how things stand on the DL going into the offseason:

Transfer Profile: 5 things to know about Oregon’s newest DL Jordan Burch

Jordan Burch lived in the shadow of a great South Carolina Gamecock, but now he comes to Oregon to make a name for himself.

Playing in the shadow of the program’s best defensive lineman in the history of the school would be a daunting task for any kid coming out of high school.

But that was the position defensive lineman Jordan Burch put himself in when he decided to play for South Carolina in 2020 where he was billed as the next Jadaveon Clowney.

Those are some big cleats to fill and after three seasons of not being able to become the next great Gamecock, Burch has decided to go as far away from Clowney’s shadow in hopes of becoming his own player, now as an Oregon Duck.

At 6-foot-6 and 275 pounds, Burch will definitely compete for a starting spot along the Duck defensive line. He’s coming off his best season in Columbia, with 60 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Burch is a former 5-star recruit as the No. 8 player in the 2020 class, and was projected as a possible first-round draft pick coming out of the prep ranks. With a good season in Eugene, he will be among those drafted in 2024.

5-star South Carolina DL Jordan Burch announces transfer to Ducks

Dan Lanning is bringing a former 5-star recruit to Eugene. South Carolina transfer Jordan Burch has committed to Oregon.

The Oregon Ducks have developed a habit of making a splash in the transfer portal, and they made possibly one of the biggest splashes of the offseason, landing a commitment from former South Carolina defensive lineman Jordan Burch.

With a handful of unknowns on the defensive line — Brandon Dorlus, Jordon Riley, Casey Rogers, and Taki Taimani have yet to announce their 2023 decisions — Dan Lanning went out and got one of the best DLs available in the portal, getting Burch up to Eugene on a visit over this past weekend and ultimately getting him to commit to the Ducks.

As a former 5-star recruit who was rated as the No. 8 overall player in the 2020 recruiting class. In three years with the Gamecocks, Burch had 4.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss.

Burch is just the latest addition for the Ducks through the transfer portal. Oregon has already added OT Ajani Cornelius, WR Traeshon Holden, and LB Jestin Jacobs, among others, all of whom are expected to strongly contend for a starting spot. The same can be said for Burch, who will likely be one of the biggest instant-impact newcomers on the roster next season.

Former 5-star DE Jordan Burch enters transfer portal

UGA football has a lot of connections to South Carolina defensive end Jordan Burch

Former five-star prospect Jordan Burch recorded 60 total tackles and 3.5 sacks as a junior in 2022 for South Carolina. Burch, who was widely considered one of the best players in the class of 2020, committed to Will Muschamp and South Carolina a few years ago.

Now, Burch has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Former South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp is the co-defensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Could Burch transfer to Georgia? Burch heavily considered the Bulldogs before he committed to South Carolina.

Burch will have plenty of options and will be one of the top players in the transfer portal. Burch could enter the 2023 NFL draft. He could transfer or could return to South Carolina.

Burch is an athletic defensive end with a solid build. He played high school basketball and is from Columbia, South Carolina. He played high school football at Hammond School. The talented defensive end also considered Alabama, Clemson and LSU when he was coming out of high school.

Elite former 5-star DL Jordan Burch from South Carolina enters transfer portal

South Carolina’s Jordan Burch is now in the transfer portal. Burch has a strong connection with Dan Lanning, who recruited the 5-star hard at Georgia.

The Oregon Ducks are expected to be aggressive when it comes to high-end defensive linemen in the transfer portal this offseason, and one of the best options might have just become available.

Former South Carolina Gamecocks’ DL Jordan Burch announced on Thursday he was entering the portal. A three-year starter in South Carolina, Burch is a former five-star recruit who was rated by 247Sports as the No. 8 overall player in the 2020 class.

If that weren’t intriguing enough on its own, consider that Burch had the Georgia Bulldogs as one of his top schools going into his commitment. Who was his primary recruiter with the Bulldogs? None other than current Oregon head coach Dan Lanning.

A relationship has obviously been established, and that could be enough to get Burch to come up to Eugene for the 2023 season and continue his career. Obviously, with a player as talented as this — Burch had 3.5 sacks in 2022 — a number of teams are going to be trying hard to land the big DL. We will see in the coming weeks if Lanning can convince Burch to fly to the Pacific Northwest for a visit.

5-star Georgia target never signed with rival; coach explains why

Georgia football 5-star target Jordan Burch committed but never signed with South Carolina and his head coach explains why.

On Early Signing Day, Georgia missed out on its biggest target, 5-star defensive Jordan Burch.

Burch committed to South Carolina, deciding to stick around in his hometown of Columbia.

He is the 5th ranked player in the country and the highest recruit the Gamecocks have reeled in since Jadeveon Clowney (#1) in 2011.

However, South Carolina fans will have to wait a bit longer before things become official with Burch, as he never signed his letter of intent during the early signing period (Wed-Fri) and plans on waiting.

Burch’s high school Erik Kimrey discussed his star playing not signing early, stating he wants to do so with his teammates.

“I think Jordan and (South Carolina verbal commit Alex Huntley) value signing with their teammates, and to me that’s a reason they decided not to sign early,” Kimrey told The Post and Courier in a story published on Saturday.

Kimrey did not indicate that Burch may be having second thoughts, but that will not stop Georgia coaches from reaching out to him and attempting to land the five-star before that first Wednesday in February.

Jordan Burch becomes highest-ranked South Carolina commit since Jadeveon Clowney

South Carolina football got the commitment of the top in-state recruit Jordan Burch.

Jordan Burch, the No. 2 player in the Chosen 25, has elected to stay in state.

The strong-side defensive end has committed to South Carolina with plans to sign Wednesday and enroll over summer.

Burch committed to South Carolina over schools including Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and LSU, according to 247Sports.

He is the highest-rated South Carolina commit since Jadeveon Clowney in 2011.

This season, the 6-foot-5, 275-pound athlete had 53 tackles, 18 tackles for loss and nine sacks to help Hammond School (Columbia, South Carolina) go 12-2 and win the 3A state championship.

At South Carolina, Burch can pair up on the defensive line with a top-10 player from the 2019 class, Zacch Pickens, who was also the top player in South Carolina coming out of high school.

The Gamecocks have now secured the commitment of the top four in-state players in the 2020 class: Burch, four-star dual-threat quarterback Luke Doty, and four-star defensive tackles Alex Huntley and Tonka Hemingway.

The class is now ranked No. 17 in the country on 247Sports.
