Jags release WR John Brown from practice squad

The Jags signed Brown to their practice squad three weeks ago, but with him being unable to make a quick impact, they’ve decided to part ways with the veteran.

The Jacksonville Jaguars started Week 13 by making a roster move and releasing practice squad receiver John Brown. The decision came exactly three weeks away from the veteran’s signing, which was one they were hoping would bring speed to the offense.

Brown participated in two games with the Jags (against San Francisco and Atlanta), but was unable to register a catch with the team, though he was targeted twice. It also didn’t help that he had limited snaps to make an impact, as he only was on the field for seven total plays during his Jags tenure.

Prior to joining the Jags’ practice squad, Brown last spent time with the Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, and Buffalo Bills. However, he entered the league as a third-round pick for the Arizona Cardinals in 2014 and currently has 320 catches for 4,748 yards and 31 touchdowns to his name.

With the Jags releasing the veteran from practice squad, they still have three receivers on the unit. Those players are Jeff Cotton, Tim Jones, and Josh Hammond.

Jags activate O’Shaughnessy, Linder from IR, also elevates Brown from practice squad

The Jags are bringing back two of their most experienced offensive players from IR before taking on the Falcons.

Earlier this week, Jacksonville Jaguars coach Urban Meyer told the media that the team had plans to activate veteran tight end James O’Shaughnessy and center Brandon Linder from the injured reserve, and on Saturday, those plans came into fruition. The Jags announced that both veterans were officially placed back on the active roster, putting them both in position to take the field against the Atlanta Falcons.

O’Shaughnessy had been on injured reserve since the Jags’ Week 2 game against the Denver Broncos with an ankle injury. The injury was one that occurred early in the game and only allowed O’Shaughnessy to see the field for three snaps. As a result, the Jags were temporarily without their top pass-catching tight end, but have picked up notables Jacob Hollister and Dan Arnold since.

As for Linder, he sustained an MCL and ankle injury Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans on a goal-line rushing attempt. As a result, he was carted off the field and his injury left the Jags without a top-8 center in the league.

With Linder back, it could help the Jags struggling offense and Trevor Lawrence tremendously, while O’Shaughnessy could give the team a better option at the TE2 position.

The Jags also elevated receiver John Brown from their practice squad for the second consecutive week. With the need for some speed on the perimeter, the Jags signed him earlier this month. He received one target against the 49ers last week, but could see more time on the field against Atlanta with another week under his belt.

Brown will enter Sunday’s game with 320 career catches for 4,748 receiving yards and 31 touchdowns. He last registered statistics with the Buffalo Bills in 2020 after starting in eight games with the team and totaling 33 catches for 458 yards and three touchdowns.

3 bold predictions for Jags’ Week 11 matchup vs. 49ers

The Jags have the opportunity to upset a talented 49ers team that has some momentum at the moment. Here are three bold predictions that would help them achieve that.

After an away game against the Indianapolis Colts where they fell short of a comeback win, the Jacksonville Jaguars will play host to the San Francisco 49ers Sunday at TIAA Bank Field. In the process, they will also have to deal with being the underdogs as the Niners acquired a big win over a Los Angeles Rams team that many feel is Super Bowl-bound.

However, as we’ve seen in the past, this Jags team can never be overlooked as they’ve challenged some solid teams and even knocked off a team many thought would be in the AFC Championship. If their offense can show up against the Niners, this could also be one they make closer than expected or maybe even win.

Needless to say, if the right players step up the Jags have a chance, and here are some bold predictions that involve a few notables on the team who could help the Jags acquire win No. 3:

Jags add WR John Brown to practice squad

The Jags have been looking for speed at receiver and made an addition to the practice squad who may can give that to them.

In addition to signing running back Jordan Wilkins to the practice squad Monday, the Jacksonville Jaguars also added speedy receiver John Brown to the group. And with the addition of both players putting the Jags over the limit by one player, they released running back Kerrith Whyte Jr.

Jags coach Urban Meyer has often discussed replacing DJ Chark’s speed somehow, so the signing of Brown makes sense for the practice squad. Brown will enter his tenure in Jacksonville with eight years of experience and has participated in 98 games while starting in 65.

As a former third-round pick (91st overall) for the Arizona Cardinals from the 2014 NFL Draft, Brown will enter his Jags tenure with 320 catches for 4,748 yards and 31 touchdowns to his name. His career-high came two seasons ago with the Buffalo Bills as he registered 72 catches for 1,060 yards and six touchdowns in 2019.

Brown’s signing gives the Jags four receivers on their practice squad. He will join Tim Jones, Jeff Cotton, and Josh Hammond on the unit and will be the most experienced member on it and the practice squad in general.

4 wide receivers the Rams should consider signing to add depth

The Rams are thin at wide receiver and they could some depth at the position for the rest of the season. Here are four options.

Fans of the Los Angeles Rams are still raving about the acquisition of Von Miller from the Denver Broncos ahead of the trade deadline. Miller joins a defense that already features the likes of Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, and Leonard Floyd — among others.

With Miller arriving in Los Angeles, the Rams now have a deep group of edge rushers to deploy. On the other side of the ball, Los Angeles is now thin at wide receiver due to the release of DeSean Jackson and Tutu Atwell being placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Van Jefferson make up one of the best trios in the NFL, but behind them, rookie Ben Skowronek is the only other wide receiver on the active roster. Taking that into consideration, I’d expect the Rams to add some depth at the wide receiver position soon.

The trade deadline has passed, so Los Angeles would need to either sign someone from its practice squad or could elect to search free agency for a depth piece. With an obvious need out wide, here are four receivers the Rams should consider signing to give them depth for the rest of the season.

Former Bills WR John Brown looking for new team… again

Former #Bills WR John Brown looking for new team… again:

Former Bills wide receiver John Brown is a free agent once more.

Brown was cut in a salary cap move by Buffalo (4-2) earlier this offseason after a mostly productive spell with the Bills. In 2020, injuries slowed him down.

Brown was first signed by the Raiders this past summer, only to ask to be released. That was granted.

Now for the second time, that same scenario played out.

Signed by the Broncos earlier this month to their practice squad, the 32-year-old again asked to be released. That happened on Tuesday.

According to Broncos Wire, Brown wanted to be let go of again because the Broncos had receiver Jerry Jeudy (ankle) returning from injury.

Because of that, Brown didn’t want to just sit on the practice squad since he wasn’t going to be called up with Jeudy’s recovery. That’s why he’s now without a team.

As a free agent, Brown could now potentially sign with a new club soon, even the Bills.

But Orchard Park seems unlikely considering Brown was upset with playing time twice already this season.

In Buffalo, he’d be well behind several others on one of the NFL’s deeper receiver depth charts.

Broncos made 6 roster moves Tuesday

Broncos GM George Paton was busy on Tuesday, making six transactions.

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton has been busy. After completing two trades in recent days, Paton made six more transactions on Tuesday.

Broncos grant WR John Brown’s request to be cut

John Brown also asked the Raiders to release him earlier this year.

The Denver Broncos parted ways with wide receiver John Brown on Tuesday, releasing the speedy veteran from their practice squad.

NFL teams are allowed to elevate up to two players from the practice squad to the game day roster each week. Once a player is elevated a third time, though, he has to clear waivers before returning to the practice squad.

Because the team has already elevated Brown twice this season, they did not plan to do so this week because they would then risk losing him to the waiver wire. Denver expects Jerry Jeudy (ankle) to return this week, so Brown wasn’t going to be promoted for Sunday’s game against Washington.

So instead of remaining on the practice squad to provide depth, Brown asked the Broncos to release him, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Denver granted his request and Brown is now a free agent after getting cut.

Brown also requested — and was granted — a release from the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this year.

This is the second time a wide receiver signing didn’t work out for the Broncos this season. Before signing Brown, Denver brought in David Moore, who played in two games and recorded no receptions before being cut.

Moore did re-sign with the practice squad, but he’s clearly low on the team’s depth chart. Brown wasn’t content to fill a bottom-of-the-depth chart practice squad receiver role, so he’ll now look for a new team.

Broncos status updates for Teddy Bridgewater and Jerry Jeudy

Broncos QB Teddy Bridgewater is trending toward playing on TNF, but it looks like WR Jerry Jeudy won’t be activated from IR this week.

The Denver Broncos have made two game day roster moves ahead of their “Thursday Night Football” showdown with the Cleveland Browns. The team also made a Week 7 decision on wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, and news broke about the status of quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

Here’s what fans need to know.

David Moore cut by Broncos after no catches in two games

David Moore had no catches in his first two games with the Broncos and he was inactive in Week 6.

David Moore was released by the Denver Broncos on Tuesday after failing to fill KJ Hamler’s former role in the team’s offense.

After Hamler went down with a season-ending knee injury three weeks ago, Broncos Wire published a list of several players the team could target to help replace him. That list included speedy receiver John Brown, who was a free agent at the time.

Denver opted instead to sign Moore off the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad. Moore played in 19 snaps in his first game with the Broncos in Week 4 but did not catch any passes.

Seemingly unhappy with Moore’s performance, Denver reduced his role the following week, giving him just four snaps on offense in Week 5. In two games, Moore had two targets and no catches in Denver.

The Broncos then went out and signed Brown to their practice squad. Given his speed, Brown appears to be a more like-for-like replacement for Hamler than Moore. Denver elevated Brown to the active roster in Week 6 and Moore was inactive after two underwhelming performances.

Brown reverted back to the practice squad on Monday and Moore was cut Tuesday. The Broncos have not yet filled Moore’s former spot on the 53-man roster. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Brown get promoted to the active roster to replace Moore on offense.
