Report: Texans to work out former Jaguars TE James O’Shaughnessy

The Houston Texans are set to work out former Jacksonville Jaguars tight end James O’Shaughnessy.

The Houston Texans are looking to possible veteran help to bolster their thinning tight end group after five training camp practices.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans are set to work out former Jacksonville Jaguars tight end James O’Shaughnessy.

The 31-year-old was not on an NFL roster last season, albeit O’Shaughnessy spent all of 2022 with the Chicago Bears’ offseason program through the end of preseason. The Minnesota Vikings signed O’Shaughnessy to the practice squad in mid-November.

The former Illinois State product played 57 games for the Jaguars from 2017-21. O’Shaughnessy caught 104 passes for 1,022 yards and three touchdowns.

Dalton Schultz is recovering from a collision with safety Jimmie Ward on July 29. Third-year Brevin Jordan is working through a hamstring problem, and second-year Teagan Quitoriano remains on the physically unable to perform list.

Vikings sign TE James O’Shaughnessy to the practice squad

The Vikings had him in for a tryout a few weeks ago and liked what they saw

The Minnesota Vikings had tight end Jacob Hollister poached off of their practice squad over the weekend. The Raiders signed him after having him on the roster during training camp which was a smart move with Hollister not having to learn the playbook.

The Viking finally filled the spot on the practice squad by signing eighth-year veteran tight end James O’Shaughnessy.

The Viking brought him in from a tryout a few weeks back after the injury to Ben Ellefson and apparently liked what they saw.

Over his career, O’Shaughnessy has been a stalwart backup tight end for both the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars. A former fifth-round pick out of Illinois State, O’Shaughnessy has started 40 games out of 80 played and amassed 112 catches for 1,108 yards and three touchdowns.

His addition makes things easier until the return of Ellefson, as Nick Muse has already been elevated from the practice squad the maximum of three times.

Bears injury, absence updates from Day 8 of training camp

Bears rookie CB Kyler Gordon is among the players not practicing on Friday. And, surprise, Teven Jenkins missed his seventh practice.

The Chicago Bears returned to the practice field on Friday for their eighth training camp practice, where the pads on are for the third straight workout.

While offensive tackle Teven Jenkins has missed his seventh straight practice, there were some other notable absences and apparent injuries.

The Bears have a long list of players who aren’t practicing on Friday, including several cornerbacks. Rookie Kyler Gordon, Kindle Vildor and Duke Shelley aren’t participating, which is concerning given the team is already without Thomas Graham Jr., who’s nursing a hamstring injury.

Defensive end Robert Quinn, defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga, tight end James O’Shaughnessy, wide receiver Dante Pettis and linebacker C.J. Avery were also not practicing.

Center Lucas Patrick remains sidelined with a right hand injury, and linebacker Roquan Smith remains on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

The good news? Defensive tackle Angelo Blackson and rookie tight end Chase Allen returned to practice after missing a few days.

Bears 2022 training camp preview: Tight ends

We’re taking a look at the Bears tight ends ahead of training camp and examining the biggest question facing the position group.

Chicago Bears training camp is less than a month away, which means it’s time to start looking ahead at the roster the team is bringing to Lake Forest.

We’re continuing with the tight end position, which experienced an overhaul this offseason following the departures of Jimmy Graham, Jesse James, J.P. Holtz and Jesper Horsted and an influx of new talent under general manager Ryan Poles.

Cole Kmet remains the only tight end on the roster from a year ago, where he’ll be the featured guy for the Bears offense. Kmet is coming off an encouraging second season, but he’s looking to finally break out in a pivotal Year 3.

Let’s take a look at the quarterbacks heading into training camp:

Updated look at Bears tight end depth after James O’Shaughnessy signing

With James O’Shaughnessy joining the Bears, here’s a look at where Chicago’s tight end depth stands.

The Chicago Bears signed tight end James O’Shaughnessy to a one-year deal, which makes him the third tight end move in free agency for general manager Ryan Poles.

O’Shaughnessy, a former fifth-round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015, has played seven NFL seasons with the Chiefs (2015-16) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2017-21). He has 112 catches for 1,108 yards and three touchdowns.

O’Shaughnessy was drafted by the Chiefs during Poles’ tenure, and he provides additional depth at tight end for the Bears, where he figures to serve as another backup for Cole Kmet.

With the addition of O’Shaughnessy, here’s a look at the Bears’ tight end depth:

Former Jaguars TE James O’Shaughnessy signs with the Chicago Bears

Former Jaguars TE James O’Shaughnessy signed with the Chicago Bears on Monday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars elected to part ways with veteran tight end James O’Shaughnessy this offseason. They replaced him by signing former New York Giants tight end Evan Engram.

On Monday, O’Shaughnessy found a new home with the Chicago Bears. He joins Chicago after spending the last five seasons with the Jaguars.

O’Shaughnessy is a former 2015 fifth-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs. He was traded to New England after two seasons with the Chiefs. He ended up being waived on Sept. 2 in 2017 and was claimed by the Jags the following day.

In his seven-year career, he has played in 80 games, starting 40 of them. He has also caught 112 passes for 1,108 yards and three touchdowns. His best season was with the Jaguars in 2020 where he hauled in 28 passes for 262 yards.

O’Shaughnessy was a solid tight end in the blocking and had some good moments as a pass-catcher when Blake Bortles and Gardner Minshew II were behind center. He was a valuable contributor to the Jaguars when he was healthy.

Chiefs draft pick James O’Shaughnessy signs with Bears

Former #Chiefs TE James O’Shaughnessy has been reunited with Ryan Poles and Trey Koziol after signing with the #Bears.

A former Kansas City Chiefs draft pick is being reunited with two members of the team’s front office staff with the Chicago Bears.

Tight end James O’Shaughnessy was a fifth-round draft pick by the Chiefs in 2015 out of Illinois State, and now he’s signed a one-year deal with the Bears. He spent just two seasons in Kansas City, working primarily as a third-string backup behind Travis Kelce and Demetrius Harris. He caught just eight receptions for 86 yards in 23 games played with K.C during those two seasons.

In 2017, the Chiefs traded O’Shaughnessy to the New England Patriots for a fifth-round draft pick (eventually used to draft LB Ukeme Eligwe). He was released by the Patriots during 53-man roster cuts, but he’d catch on with another NFL team, where’d he’d spend the majority of his seven-year NFL career.

A day after his release from New England, O’Shaughnessy was claimed by the Jacksonville Jaguars off of waivers. He’d spend a total of five seasons in Jacksonville, catching 104 passes for 1,022 yards and three touchdowns from a laundry list of quarterbacks and head coaches. He appeared in 54 games with 37 career starts during that span, but he became an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

O’Shaughnessy doesn’t just return to his home state of Illinois by signing with Chicago, but he’s now reunited with Bears GM Ryan Poles and Co-Director of Player Personnel Trey Koziol. Both held roles in the Kansas City front office when O’Shaughnessy was drafted to the team, but Koziol was actually the area scout who brought O’Shaughnessy to Kansas City back in 2015.

Bears signed James O’Shaughnessy, and fans had plenty of tight end jokes

The Bears have four tight ends on the roster with the addition of James O’Shaughnessy. But for fans, it feels like a lot more.

The Chicago Bears signed veteran tight end James O’Shaughnessy to a one-year deal on Monday, adding another homegrown tight end to the roster alongside Cole Kmet.

The move doesn’t come as a surprise given the Ryan Poles connection, as Poles served as a college scouting director in Kansas City when the Chiefs drafted O’Shaughnessy.

As you can imagine, there were plenty of tight end jokes being thrown out with O’Shaughnessy’s addition — which feels like tradition after former general manager Ryan Pace once collected a myriad of tight ends.

For the record, the Bears currently only have four tight ends on the roster (Cole Kmet, Ryan Griffin, Jesper Horsted and O’Shaughnessy). But for Bears fans, it seems more like seven. (Guess it’s hard to drop old habits).

Here’s how fans are reacting to the Bears adding another tight end in O’Shaughnessy:

Bears sign TE James O’Shaughnessy to 1-year deal

There’s an obvious connection between O’Shaughnessy and new Bears general manager Ryan Poles, who was a college scouting director in Kansas City when the Chiefs drafted O’Shaughnessy.

Last season, O’Shaughnessy played just seven games after sustaining an ankle injury. He caught 24 passes for 244 yards.

The Bears are getting another homegrown Chicago native in O’Shaughnessy, who grew up in Naperville and attended Illinois State University.

O’Shaughnessy joins a tight ends room led by third-year pro Cole Kmet, as well Jesper Horsted and fellow newcomer Ryan Griffin.

Jaguars positional needs and 2021 review: Tight Ends

The Jags got some surprising production from Dan Arnold, but the tight end spot still needs some work.

The tight end position was one many expected the Jacksonville Jaguars to address in the offseason last year. Whether that meant targeting a free agent or taking a player in the first two days of the draft, it was clear the team needed to revamp the position.

Neither of those possibilities ultimately played out, though. The team didn’t do much to address the tight end spot until Week 4 of the regular season, when it dealt cornerback C.J. Henderson to the Carolina Panthers and got tight end Dan Arnold in return.

But that was the only major addition all of last season, and heading into 2022, it seems unlikely that the Jags make the same mistake at what is quickly evolving into one of the most important positions in the modern game.

Here’s how the tight ends looked in 2021 and the outlook at the spot moving forward.
