Reliving Texas’ 2022 loss to Texas Tech: “I told you they’d break”

After beating Texas last season, Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said, “I told you they’d break.”

The Texas Tech Red Raiders come to town for a season finale on Black Friday. Their return brings to mind one of the two lowest points of the Texas Longhorns’ 2022 regular season.

Texas Tech hosted Texas in Week 4 of last season. The game started about as well as Texas could have imagined as the team marched down and put seven points on the board on an early touchdown to Longhorns running back Keilan Robinson. From there, the Red Raiders turned the game into a battle.

After the initial score, Tech started a back in forth that at one point had the Raiders up 14-10. The Longhorns appeared to have quieted the storm with two unanswered touchdowns and a 24-14 lead entering the half. In reality it was far from over.

The Red Raiders attempted fourth down after fourth down, failing on many of them. Yet their aggressiveness helped erase a 14-point second half lead while Texas’ defensive passivity brought the game to a 34-34 tie to end regulation.

Texas Tech won that game 37-34 in overtime, but it was their head coach’s postgame comments that stole the headlines. Joey McGuire said the following.

“I told you they were going to break and they did. I told you they were going to break and they did. The reporter asked me at the end, she says, ‘What’s it mean to win this game and beat Texas?’ I said, ‘It doesn’t mean anything to beat Texas. We’re 1-0 in the Big 12.’ … The country’s gonna find out, everything runs through Lubbock.”

McGuire might have been right about that Texas team, but he underestimated the current Longhorns squad in his offseason comments. So far this season, this team does not break.

Texas will look to make another team pay for talking down on the Longhorns before playing them. The game will take place Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.

Oregon vs. Texas Tech: ‘Tale of the Tape’ for No. 13 Ducks vs. Red Raiders

Oregon is less than a touchdown favorite heading into Lubbock this weekend. The numbers suggest it should be more than that.

In a sense, this Week 2 matchup for the Oregon Ducks against the Texas Tech Red Raiders feels like Week 1. While the Ducks were able to knock the rust off and get some live action against a different team last week against Portland State, the matchup didn’t really provide many scenarios for us to learn a whole lot about the team.

Oregon won 81-7 in a game that could have had a 100-plus scoring differential if the Ducks wanted to make it so.

This week, though, the Ducks will face some tougher competition in Texas Tech. With Tyler Shough at quarterback, and a group of strong skill position players, Oregon’s defense will have a big task on their hands trying to slow down one of the fastest offenses in the nation. Likewise, Bo Nix and the Ducks’ offense will try to pick apart a secondary filled with several veteran players who know what they’re doing.

So when you look at the tape and get into the numbers, which team is expected to have an advantage? Let’s take a look, using numbers from last week to project ahead.

‘He’s an NFL QB;’ Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire talks Bo Nix, Dan Lanning, and the Ducks

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire had some glowing things to say about Bo Nix and the Oregon offense ahead of Saturday’s game.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders have a lot to prove this weekend when they host the No. 13 Oregon Ducks in Lubbock for their home opener. Joey McGuire and his squad didn’t get off to the best start in Week 1, blowing a 17-point lead and losing to the Wyoming Cowboys in double-overtime.

Texas Tech had high expectations going into the season, being picked to finish fourth in the Big 12 this year. Despite the season-opening loss, they still have those high expectations, and they hope to get things back on track this week with a statement win against an Oregon team that put 81 points on the board in the first week of the season.

On Monday, McGuire met with media members to preview the matchup, talk about his team, and go into detail on what it is about the Ducks that makes them such a team. Here are some of the most notable quotes from his press conference when talking about Oregon:

Could Joey McGuire’s trash talk backfire against Texas?

Joey McGuire is getting a little too comfortable talking about Texas and Oklahoma.

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire is talking with plenty of bravado. For a coach who went 7-5 last season with his fair share of two-score losses, the math isn’t adding up.

McGuire’s latest remark questions whether or not Oklahoma and Texas are really blue bloods. He referred to the two teams in the following way to a Texas Tech dominant crowd.

“These so-called bluebloods — and I really question that. One of them’s really good in Olympic sports.”

That Texas team is 16-4 in its last 20 meetings against Texas Tech. It’s the same Texas that is in the top five nationally in all-time wins. It’s the very program that has four more national titles and 32 conference championships to Tech’s 11 conference titles. It’s the Texas that is 54-18 all-time against the west Texas program.

Not long ago, Texas Tech pulled on the heartstrings trying to keep the Longhorns in the same conference. Their reasoning: The Lubbock economy would take a hit. They may have to enjoy the final game of the rivalry taking place in Austin this season.

McGuire is putting a Texas-sized target on his back. The Longhorns will look to respond on Black Friday on Nov. 24.

Texas Tech head coach to officiate wedding of Red Raiders’ quarterback Tyler Slough

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire is going to get an unique opportunity with his QB1 next April.

Few relationships in sports are more vital to success than the relationship between a football head coach and their quarterback. For Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire and quarterback Tyler Shough that relationship is stronger than most.

During Big 12 Media Days, McGuire talked about becoming a wedding officiant and having already married two former players. Now he’ll be adding a third player to that list. McGuire will be officiating the wedding between Shough and his girlfriend in April.

During his availability to the media, Shough discussed how the idea came up for him and his fiance, “It was really kind of a spur of the moment, where I was like, oh my God, we should just get him to do it,” the Red Raiders signal-caller said. “We asked him about it, and he was, like, broke down. He was super happy. It was really cool.”

For Texas Tech, the story is perhaps another feather in the cap of how personable and well-liked by his players, head coach Joey McGuire is. While the Red Raiders have had a large amount of hype built around the program this spring, McGuire has also become known for being a relationship-driven head coach.

Shough transferred to Texas Tech prior to the 2021 season after spending three years with Oregon. McGuire joined him shortly after being hired by Texas Tech in November of 2021.

The Red Raiders enter the 2023 season looking to follow up their first eight-win season since 2013. They were picked by the Big 12 media to finish fourth in the conference in this year’s preseason poll.

CBS Sports Big 12 Hot Seat Ratings: ‘Pressure is mounting’ for Brent Venables

In their updated hot seat rating for the 2023 season, CBS Sports believes “pressure is mounting” for Oklahoma’s Brent Venables.

Coming out of a 2022 season where the Oklahoma Sooners had their first losing season since 1998 with one of the worst defenses in the team’s history, it’s not unreasonable to have questions about the direction of the program.

At the same time, it’s only been one year, and we haven’t seen Venables’ recruiting classes take the field and play significant snaps yet. The team may not have much success to speak about on the field yet, but the coaching staff has done a tremendous job off of it on the recruiting trail.

They’ve put together two top 10 classes, and with the way things are shaping up, the Sooners are looking at a third straight top 10 class in the 2024 cycle.

Ahead of the 2023 season, CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd took a look at every head coach in the FBS and determined where they stood on his “hot seat rating system.”

It’s a system that rates coaches from 0-5. “Zero” represents coaches that are untouchable, like Nick Saban or Kirby Smart. “Five” represents coaches that are in must-win mode heading into 2023.

Here’s a look at where the 14 Big 12 coaches stand heading into 2023. We also included where each coach ranked in CBS Sports’ head coach rankings in the Big 12 and overall and their career winning percentages.

Longhorns Big 12 team to beat, Sooners third in preseason media poll

The Oklahoma Sooners were picked to finish third in the Big 12 preseason media poll while their Red River Rivals look like the team to beat.

Next week, all 14 teams in the Big 12 will descend upon Arlington, Texas, for Big 12 Media Days at AT&T Stadium.

It marks a landmark season for the conference in what will be the last year featuring the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns before they depart for the SEC next summer.

The Big 12 is as wide open as it has been recently. If one team leads the pack in the public eye, it is the Texas Longhorns.

Their combination of incoming talent and returning star power them as the favorite to win the conference early on.

Ahead of next week’s media days, here’s how those that cover the Big 12 voted in the preseason poll.

Where did Big 12 teams land in Athlon Sports 1-133 rankings for the 2023 season?

How does the Big 12 stack up nationally in Athlon Sports 1-133 power rankings for the 2023 college football season?

The 2023 Big 12 season is going to be one like none other. With a strong amount of parity in the league, the race to Arlington will go on until the final weekend of the regular season this fall.

If CBS Sports Big 12 win projections are any indication, eight teams will finish within two wins of each other by the end of the year. Now, how that plays out in the conference is anyone’s guess, but there’s a group of five or six teams that could reasonably contend for the Big 12 title in 2023.

Over at Athlon Sports, Steve Lassan released his updated 1-133 rankings for the Football Bowl Subdivision. Where did the Big 12 members land? Let’s take a look.

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire keeps his word, climbs crane

Joey McGuire shows no fear in making good on a two-month old promise.

For the first time since 2013, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are coming off back-to-back winning seasons. It has been tough sledding ever since the school fired Mike Leach at the end of the 2009 season.

Coaches such as Tommy Tuberville, Kliff Kingsbury, and Matt Wells. Wells had the shortest tenure of the three lasting just 30 games and finishing with a record of 13-17. The school turned to a former high school football coach. Joey McGuire hit the ground running and gave this program life once again.

Not only is McGuire bringing the Red Raiders out of the doldrums of the Big 12, he is climbing to new heights himself.

Back in April, the second-year head coach made a crazy promise provided they received a certain number of re-tweets. The tweet below received 3,566 re-tweets.

Not everyone in the McGuire family was on board with such a venture.

According to a tweet from the Texas Tech football’s official Twitter account, he accomplished the feat on Jun. 19. According to the athletics department, there was no danger for McGuire.

“Zero. Every safety precaution there is was utilized,” Texas Tech assistant athletics director for media relations Matt Dowdy told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. “He was also with the experts that go up and down there every day.”

McGuire’s players will run through a brick wall for him and apparently, he will climb a 220-foot crane for them.
