Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire keeps his word, climbs crane

Joey McGuire shows no fear in making good on a two-month old promise.

For the first time since 2013, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are coming off back-to-back winning seasons. It has been tough sledding ever since the school fired Mike Leach at the end of the 2009 season.

Coaches such as Tommy Tuberville, Kliff Kingsbury, and Matt Wells. Wells had the shortest tenure of the three lasting just 30 games and finishing with a record of 13-17. The school turned to a former high school football coach. Joey McGuire hit the ground running and gave this program life once again.

Not only is McGuire bringing the Red Raiders out of the doldrums of the Big 12, he is climbing to new heights himself.

Back in April, the second-year head coach made a crazy promise provided they received a certain number of re-tweets. The tweet below received 3,566 re-tweets.

Not everyone in the McGuire family was on board with such a venture.

According to a tweet from the Texas Tech football’s official Twitter account, he accomplished the feat on Jun. 19. According to the athletics department, there was no danger for McGuire.

“Zero. Every safety precaution there is was utilized,” Texas Tech assistant athletics director for media relations Matt Dowdy told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. “He was also with the experts that go up and down there every day.”

McGuire’s players will run through a brick wall for him and apparently, he will climb a 220-foot crane for them.
