‘I wouldn’t want to play Oregon;’ Ducks building national buzz going into November

ESPN was singing the Ducks praises during the first reveal of the College Football Playoff rankings.

The Oregon Ducks sure made quite the statement this past weekend with that big win over the Utah Utes, and it left an impression on the ESPN analysts, particularly Rece Davis and Kirk Herbstreit — both of whom were in Salt Lake City for ‘College GameDay’.

They had front-row seats to watch the Ducks defeat the Utes 35-6 and as the first College Football Playoff rankings were announced on Tuesday, that impression hasn’t worn off.

Oregon is No. 6 in the country, according to the committee, ranked as the best one-loss team in the nation. ESPN’s experts like where the Ducks are headed, and a few of them made note on Tuesday night that the rest of the nation should be taking notice of what Dan Lanning is doing in Eugene.

“I wouldn’t want to play Oregon right now,” Herbstreit said on the CFP rankings show. “If you’re asking who the best is, not the most deserving — I’m not going to say they should be No. 1 — If you’re asking me who I do not want to play, it would be Oregon.”

‘College GameDay’ host Rece Davis took it a step further.

“I think Oregon can win the national championship.”

When weighing resumes at this part in the season, your record comes first, followed by who you’ve beaten and who you’ve lost to, if anyone. For the Ducks, that Week 7 loss to the No. 5 Washington Huskies looms large, but the way they lost, and how they’ve looked since then, compared to how Washington has looked since then, has several analysts believing that Oregon is still the team to beat out West.

“If you look at the last couple of weeks since the Oregon vs. Washington game, if you said who looks like the better team, it’s not close,” said Joey Gallaway, a former Ohio State Buckeye and Seattle Seahawk. “Oregon looks like the better team.”

[lawrence-related id=51033]

Huskies fans won’t like to hear that, but since that game, the Ducks have easily handled Washington State and Utah, while Washington has struggled to beat the Pac-12’s worst teams in Arizona State and Stanford. That fact was brought up on Tuesday night when Boo Corrigan, the chair of the CFP selection committee, came on and discussed the decision-making behind the rankings.

“Looking at Washington, they’ve got the big win over Oregon, but there’s a little bit of concern from the committee as it relates to the Arizona State game at home, and the Stanford game on the road — two teams with a combined 4 wins,” Corrigan said.

Going forward, Washington has games against USC, Utah, Oregon State, and Washington State ahead of them.

In the big picture, however, it doesn’t matter all that much as long as both teams take care of business like they’re expected to, Oregon and Washington will battle it out one last time in 2023 for the Pac-12 title in Vegas. Then, and only then, will we know which is the better team and which will play in the national semifinal.

Watch: Joey Galloway highlight reel

Galloway certainly made a name for himself wearing the royal blue and silver of Seattle.

The 1990’s were rather bleak for the Seattle Seahawks. A lot of years were either in the gutter, or barely finding a way to hang on at or around a .500 record. There were few stars, but the ones who were there shined brightly.

Enter: wide receiver Joey Galloway. Starting his career in the Pacific Northwest in the year of my birth, 1995, Galloway certainly made a name for himself wearing the royal blue and silver of Seattle.

His five years with the Seahawks tied the longest stretch with any one team, the other being the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But for the 12th Man, he was one of the best of an era of team history.

ESPN analysts chime in after Clemson’s loss to South Carolina

A number of ESPN analysts chimed in with various comments after eighth-ranked Clemson’s 31-30 rivalry loss to South Carolina on Saturday at Death Valley.

Along with the Tigers being outplayed on special teams, ESPN’s Trevor Matich pointed to South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler outdueling Clemson’s DJ Uiagalelei as a big difference in the outcome of the game.

Uiagalelei completed only 8 of his 29 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown with one interception, while Rattler went 25 of 39 passing for 360 yards a two touchdowns with two picks.

“You talk about ‘Beamer Ball’ – the special teams of South Carolina were a major contributing factor here,” Matich said on ESPN’s Championship Drive show of Shane Beamer’s team pulling off the upset. “But they won the quarterback duel. Spencer Rattler was phenomenal. Against Tennessee the week before, he was unstoppable. A lot of people thought that was just a one-off. But against a better Clemson defense, Rattler continued to hit receivers that were covered, dropping dimes under pressure. He was by far the better quarterback in this game. Threw for over 300 yards, whereas DJ Uiagalelei didn’t reach a hundred yards, and so that was the big difference.”

Rattler – a week after passing for 438 yards and six touchdowns in South Carolina’s upset home win over then-No. 5 Tennessee – had more yards against Clemson by himself than the Tigers posted in total offense as a team (336).

Meanwhile, opposite of Rattler, Uiagalelei had his most ineffective performance of the season as a passer as he set season-lows for completions and completion percentage (27.6). His interception marked his sixth time in seven games committing at least one turnover.

“Inconsistent all season long,” ESPN’s Jesse Palmer said of Uiagalelei on the network’s College Football Final show.

Matich spoke about Clemson at the quarterback position, saying the Tigers need to address it.

Dabo Swinney addressed his team’s quarterback situation again on Sunday, with the head coach stating that Uiagalelei will remain the starter for Saturday’s ACC Championship Game vs. North Carolina.

“Clemson now needs to sit back and say OK, the quarterback position is a place that we need to address,” Matich said. “We thought we had it fixed at the beginning of the year, but in the biggest games at the end of the year, we still didn’t break through when our opponents did.”

Turnovers were once again an issue with Clemson committing three more in Saturday’s game, giving the Tigers 15 in their last five games.

Two of those turnovers came on special teams, one on Antonio Williams’ punt return fumble in the waning moments of the fourth quarter that gave the ball back to the Gamecocks and allowed them to run out the clock.

The other special teams turnover occurred in the first half, when trickeration on a kickoff return – which saw Will Shipley hand the ball off to Phil Mafah in a scrum huddle — ended with Mafah fumbling the ball back to South Carolina.

South Carolina capitalized on that giveaway when Rattler scored on a 4-yard run, which cut the Gamecocks’ deficit to two points midway through the second quarter.

“Turnovers would be a problem for Clemson in this game,” ESPN’s Joey Galloway said on College Football Final. “To go trick play in this kind of game, you’re up 16-7, I don’t know about the call. Didn’t work out.”

In addition to snapping Clemson’s series and home winning streaks at seven and 40 games, respectively, the Gamecocks also put an end to any hopes the Tigers had of making the College Football Playoff.

“Yes, they’re done,” Heather Dinich, who covers the playoff for ESPN, said on Championship Drive.

“Had Clemson finished as a one-loss conference champ and you have a TCU loss or a USC loss, that ACC Champion is still in the conversation. Not anymore. You’re guaranteed to either have a two-loss champ or three-loss, (if) North Carolina wins this thing. And I mean, that is not gonna happen. And because Ohio State and Alabama are sitting there on the edge, they’re certainly getting the nod over Clemson.”

Saturday’s ACC Championship Game between Clemson (10-2, 8-0 ACC) and North Carolina (9-3, 6-2) is set for an 8 p.m. kickoff on ABC.

There has been plenty of discussion after the latest College Football Rankings came out if the lose of the Michigan game against Ohio State would get in over a one loss Clemson ACC Champion.

Former Ohio State receiver Joey Galloway might have surprised some with his thoughts earlier this week.

“It is a more difficult decision to have to include Michigan,” said Galloway on ESPN’s CFP selection show.  “Ohio State because of that win against No. 15 now in the rankings Notre Dame they would at least have the discussion.  So it opens the door.  I don’t know that they would get in above an ACC Champion Clemson, especially if Clemson goes out and makes the kind of statement that we are talking about.”

If Michigan falls this weekend to Ohio State the ESPN believes Clemson would be in much better shape.

“But that is the discussion and I think that is the only way you have that discussion is if Ohio State is that team that doesn’t win this weekend,” said Galloway.

ESPN analysts talk Clemson-Louisville, ACC title game matchup

Will Shipley’s highlight-reel 25-yard touchdown run during 10th-ranked Clemson’s 31-16 win over Louisville on Saturday at Death Valley came in at No. 4 in the top plays on ESPN’s College Football Final show. The sophomore running back hurdled a …

Will Shipley’s highlight-reel 25-yard touchdown run during 10th-ranked Clemson’s 31-16 win over Louisville on Saturday at Death Valley came in at No. 4 in the top plays on ESPN’s College Football Final show.

The sophomore running back hurdled a defender at the 10-yard line, and then sliced through two other defenders after he landed on his way to the end zone, giving the Tigers a 24-7 lead less than five minutes into the third quarter.

“Split it! Right through the blaster, touchdown,” ESPN analyst and former Florida and Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen said on College Football Final.

Clemson (9-1, 7-0 ACC) went on to finish off the win, improving to 8-0 all-time against the Cardinals and clinching the ACC Atlantic Division outright with the victory.

Louisville (6-4, 3-4) had only 88 rushing yards through three quarters but finished with 150 on the ground for the game.

One of Louisville’s two touchdowns in the game came on a Tiyon Evans run that got the Cardinals on the scoreboard with 14:17 left in the first half, making the score 10-7.

“You don’t see Clemson’s defense give up this kind of big running yards like they did against Louisville,” ESPN analyst Joey Galloway said, “but Louisville stayed in it with the run game.”

Before the end of the first half, DJ Uiagalelei led Clemson 80 yards in a drive that ate up 3:57 of game time. A 4-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Williams put Clemson up 17-7 at the half.

Clemson’s starting quarterback also ran for a 11-yard score on the Tigers’ opening possession and finished with 223 total yards and two touchdowns. Uiagalelei went 19-of-27 passing for 185 yards, adding 32 yards on 15 carries.

“They tried to play in his comfort zone, letting him run the ball some and take some pressure off him,” Mullen said of Uiagalelei.

After its final two home games against Miami and South Carolina, Clemson will head to Charlotte for a matchup with North Carolina in the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 3 (8 p.m., ABC).

Both teams are currently 9-1 and undefeated in conference play. The Tigers are averaging 34.2 points per game and allowing 21 points per game, while the Tar Heels are scoring 40.1 points per game on average and yielding 31.3 points per game to their opponents.

Both Galloway and Mullen gave some early thoughts on the ACC title game.

“Carolina is going to score a lot of points and also give up a lot of points,” Galloway said. “It’s going to be a fun game to watch.”

“I agree. I think it should be a lot of fun,” Mullen added. “But North Carolina seems to have this way about them to win all of these games right at the end, somehow, someway.”

Clemson ‘not jumping off the screen’ at this ESPN analyst

When Clemson’s initial College Football Playoff ranking was unveiled Tuesday night, an ESPN college football analyst gave his thoughts on the Tigers.

After Clemson (8-0, 6-0 ACC) came in at No. 4 in the first of six sets of CFP rankings that will be released weekly through November and in early December, Joey Galloway chimed in on the Tigers and their offense that currently ranks 19th nationally in points per game (37.1).

“Clemson, probably for the past few years, even though they won 10 games last season, they haven’t jumped off the screen at you when you watch them,” Galloway said. “You’re expecting to see that explosive offense that we’ve seen over the past years, and we’ve not seen that yet.”

Galloway added that he thinks the Tigers will “be fine” if they remain undefeated, though he apparently hasn’t been very impressed with Dabo Swinney’s team.

“So, I can see Clemson being the team that is like OK, if they win out, they’ll be fine,” he said. “But they’re not jumping off the screen at me and making me think wow, they’re a great team.”

ESPN analyst on what ‘the question becomes’ for Clemson, Uiagalelei after benching

On ESPN’s College Football Final, college football analyst Joey Galloway weighed in on Dabo Swinney’s decision to replace starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei with true freshman signal-caller Cade Klubnik in the second half of Saturday’s eventual 27-21 win over Syracuse at Death Valley.

“It was an easy decision in-game,” Galloway said. “I think when you watched the way DJU was playing, that is an easy decision to make a switch.”

Prior to being replaced by Klubnik on Clemson’s fourth possession of the third quarter, Uiagalelei completed 13 of 21 passes for 138 yards, threw two interceptions and lost a fumble that was returned 90 yards for a touchdown.

Klubnik went 2-of-4 passing for 19 yards, with six carries for 15 yards, while providing a spark for Clemson’s offense and helping the Tigers rally from an 11-point deficit at the time he came in thanks to a pair of fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns.

After the game, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said Uiagalelei remains the Tigers’ starter despite his struggles against the Orange.

“The question becomes even though Dabo came out after the game and said hey, it is still DJU’s time, how does DJU approach this team now?” Galloway said. “Because as a team we have seen our quarterback get benched. We have seen him play bad and the team has a certain feeling when these things happen. And so moving forward, it will be interesting to see how they play next when they get back on the field.”

Following a bye week, Clemson will be back on the field Saturday, Nov. 5 at Notre Dame. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on NBC.
