64 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 64 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 64 jersey number.

The New England Patriots are 64 days away from opening the season on September 10 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

So we’re continuing our ongoing countdown series by listing every Patriots player that has worn the No. 64 throughout franchise history.

The number is currently worn by second-year Patriots guard Andrew Stueber, who will face even more competition in training camp than he saw with the team a year ago. Things might be a bit thin for the Patriots at the tackle position, but they have a healthy supply of both veterans and rookies that could contribute at the guard position.

There have been 20 players that have worn the No. 69 in New England. It has mostly been a revolving door with few long-tenured players donning the jersey.

Here’s a list of every player for the Patriots that has worn the number (via Pro Football Reference):

ESPN analysts chime in after Clemson’s loss to South Carolina

A number of ESPN analysts chimed in with various comments after eighth-ranked Clemson’s 31-30 rivalry loss to South Carolina on Saturday at Death Valley.

Along with the Tigers being outplayed on special teams, ESPN’s Trevor Matich pointed to South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler outdueling Clemson’s DJ Uiagalelei as a big difference in the outcome of the game.

Uiagalelei completed only 8 of his 29 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown with one interception, while Rattler went 25 of 39 passing for 360 yards a two touchdowns with two picks.

“You talk about ‘Beamer Ball’ – the special teams of South Carolina were a major contributing factor here,” Matich said on ESPN’s Championship Drive show of Shane Beamer’s team pulling off the upset. “But they won the quarterback duel. Spencer Rattler was phenomenal. Against Tennessee the week before, he was unstoppable. A lot of people thought that was just a one-off. But against a better Clemson defense, Rattler continued to hit receivers that were covered, dropping dimes under pressure. He was by far the better quarterback in this game. Threw for over 300 yards, whereas DJ Uiagalelei didn’t reach a hundred yards, and so that was the big difference.”

Rattler – a week after passing for 438 yards and six touchdowns in South Carolina’s upset home win over then-No. 5 Tennessee – had more yards against Clemson by himself than the Tigers posted in total offense as a team (336).

Meanwhile, opposite of Rattler, Uiagalelei had his most ineffective performance of the season as a passer as he set season-lows for completions and completion percentage (27.6). His interception marked his sixth time in seven games committing at least one turnover.

“Inconsistent all season long,” ESPN’s Jesse Palmer said of Uiagalelei on the network’s College Football Final show.

Matich spoke about Clemson at the quarterback position, saying the Tigers need to address it.

Dabo Swinney addressed his team’s quarterback situation again on Sunday, with the head coach stating that Uiagalelei will remain the starter for Saturday’s ACC Championship Game vs. North Carolina.

“Clemson now needs to sit back and say OK, the quarterback position is a place that we need to address,” Matich said. “We thought we had it fixed at the beginning of the year, but in the biggest games at the end of the year, we still didn’t break through when our opponents did.”

Turnovers were once again an issue with Clemson committing three more in Saturday’s game, giving the Tigers 15 in their last five games.

Two of those turnovers came on special teams, one on Antonio Williams’ punt return fumble in the waning moments of the fourth quarter that gave the ball back to the Gamecocks and allowed them to run out the clock.

The other special teams turnover occurred in the first half, when trickeration on a kickoff return – which saw Will Shipley hand the ball off to Phil Mafah in a scrum huddle — ended with Mafah fumbling the ball back to South Carolina.

South Carolina capitalized on that giveaway when Rattler scored on a 4-yard run, which cut the Gamecocks’ deficit to two points midway through the second quarter.

“Turnovers would be a problem for Clemson in this game,” ESPN’s Joey Galloway said on College Football Final. “To go trick play in this kind of game, you’re up 16-7, I don’t know about the call. Didn’t work out.”

In addition to snapping Clemson’s series and home winning streaks at seven and 40 games, respectively, the Gamecocks also put an end to any hopes the Tigers had of making the College Football Playoff.

“Yes, they’re done,” Heather Dinich, who covers the playoff for ESPN, said on Championship Drive.

“Had Clemson finished as a one-loss conference champ and you have a TCU loss or a USC loss, that ACC Champion is still in the conversation. Not anymore. You’re guaranteed to either have a two-loss champ or three-loss, (if) North Carolina wins this thing. And I mean, that is not gonna happen. And because Ohio State and Alabama are sitting there on the edge, they’re certainly getting the nod over Clemson.”

Saturday’s ACC Championship Game between Clemson (10-2, 8-0 ACC) and North Carolina (9-3, 6-2) is set for an 8 p.m. kickoff on ABC.

On ESPN’s Championship Drive show, the analysts gave their College Football Playoff top six selections following Week 12 of the season.

Of ESPN’s Sam Acho, Heather Dinich, Matt Schick and Trevor Matich, only Matich put Clemson (10-1, 8-0 ACC) among his top six teams.

He slotted the Tigers in at No. 6 behind Southern Cal at No. 5, TCU at No. 4, Michigan at No. 3, Ohio State at No. 2 and Georgia at No. 1.

Matich, the former BYU and NFL offensive lineman, explained why he has the Tigers in the sixth spot.

“Clemson has one loss,” he said. “Defense getting healthy, one of the best in the country. Offense getting better and better.”

As for why Matich ranked Southern Cal ahead of Clemson, he pointed to the Trojans’ resume on paper.

“I still have USC ahead of them,” he said. “You know why? Because I’ve been born again at the altar of the almighty spreadsheet. But Clemson is being disregarded to people’s peril.”

ESPN analyst: ‘The guys looked different with Klubnik’

ESPN college football analyst Trevor Matich recently weighed in on fifth-ranked Clemson’s latest victory – a 27-21 thriller against then-No. 14 Syracuse last Saturday at Death Valley.

“The beauty of ugly. That’s how Clemson beat Syracuse,” Matich said on ESPN’s Championship Drive show. “It was like something was going on, hairless cats – that you’re kind of hard to look at for a while, but then in the end, they win the prize.”

“The longest home winning streak in ACC history, now it’s Dabo Swinney and Clemson,” Matich added.

As he mentioned, it was Clemson’s 38th consecutive home win, giving the Tigers sole possession of the longest home winning streak in ACC history.

The Tigers overcame four turnovers against the Orange, including three by quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, one of which resulted in a touchdown for Syracuse.

“The first half of this game, Clemson moved the ball, they did some good things,” Matich said. “But then they made monumental mental errors that led to physical mistakes, and that return for a touchdown on the fumble was one of those things that was like that.”

Cade Klubnik sparked Clemson’s offense late in the third quarter, leading touchdowns on back-to-back drives and a two-point conversion while finishing 2-of-4 passing for 19 yards. The Tigers rushed a season-high 60 times for a season-high 293 yards.

Matich spoke about the differences he saw in Clemson’s offense with Klubnik at the helm after he replaced Uiagalelei with around five minutes left in the third quarter following Uiagalelei’s second interception of the game.

“Clemson stayed with it. They ran 69 plays in the first three quarters. So when Cade Klubnik came in… didn’t make big mistakes,” Matich said. “And by the time the fourth quarter rolled around, Clemson had an explosion of offense, mostly on the ground. Klubnik only had two completions, one was a sweet completion – he showed a lot of poise on that two-point conversion.

“But when it came down to winning the game, the difference in the offense when Klubnik came in, the Clemson offense seemed to me to be a bit more light on its feet, they seemed to operate a little more efficiently, a little more effectively. It was mostly with the ground game, but the guys looked different with Klubnik. Having said that, this is still DJ’s team.”

ESPN analysts discuss Clemson’s QB switch in Syracuse game

During the Championship Drive: College Football Rewind show that aired Sunday on ESPN, the network’s Sam Acho, Heather Dinich and Trevor Matich discussed Dabo Swinney’s decision to replace starting quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei with freshman Cade Klubnik in the second half of Clemson’s eventual 27-21 win over Syracuse on Saturday at Death Valley.

“To me, that move, it was a great coaching move — do what you need to do to win the game,” Dinich said. “But to me, it opens the door to say can Clemson win a national title with DJ U? Are they good enough? I don’t know.”

“He’s got a better chance than I would playing quarterback for them, and everything’s relative,” Matich added. “Klubnik is very talented, but I don’t know that he’s ready to implement the entire playbook yet.”

Uiagalelei, who entered Saturday’s game with 17 touchdown passes and only two interceptions, threw a pair of picks while also losing a fumble that was returned 90 yards for a touchdown.

Klubnik, the former five-star prospect from Austin, Texas, went just 2-of-4 passing for 19 yards in relief of Uiagalelei but helped ignite the Tigers’ offense while doing his part to rally the team from an 11-point deficit in the comeback victory.

Despite Uiagalelei’s struggles and subsequent benching, Swinney backed the junior following the game, saying he remains the Tigers’ starter and the team’s leader.

“It’s interesting that Dabo Swinney always talks in terms of competition, that even his stars need to earn their position in practice and in games every single day,” Matich said. “He doesn’t talk about DJ U like that. He says he’s our guy, that we sat him down at halftime but he’s coming back — he’s our guy.”

Acho likes Swinney saying that Clemson is sticking with Uiagalelei as the starter.

“I do like that move though, I really do,” he said. “Because you could say hey, he had a bad day, let him continue to be the starter and let Klubnik continue to learn as opposed to making a quarterback switch now and then it doesn’t go well.”

Added Matich: “That would be the worst thing because then instead of having Klubnik come off the bench, they’d have to make him the starter. Yay, a week of social media, and then oops, we made a mistake, sit back down kid. That’s something they should avoid. And by the way, DJ U is still getting better. He had a bad day.”

Overall, in eight games this season, Uiagalelei has completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 1,803 yards and 17 touchdowns with four interceptions, to go with 350 rushing yards and four more scores on the ground.

Klubnik has played in five games this season, completing 9 of 19 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown.

Texas Football: ESPN Analyst calls Longhorns his ‘sleeper team’ of 2020

ESPN College Football Analyst Trevor Matich calls the Texas Longhorns his sleeper team in 2020. Are they worth the hype?

With the season approaching for the major conferences in college football, media outlets will be putting out their picks to win the conference, qualify for the playoffs and of course the upset picks. ESPN Analyst Trevor Matich recently gave his sleeper pick for the 2020 college football season, the Texas Longhorns.

247Sports wrote about the Longhorns as a sleeper in which they talked about Matich’s comments.

ESPN college football analyst Trevor Matich, who appeared during a game-break at halftime of Saturday night’s Austin Peay-Central Arkansas season opener, revealed Texas as his sleeper team in 2020 for one primary reason — Longhorns’ starting quarterback Sam Ehlinger.

There’s no player in college football I have more confidence in as a leader or as a guy who can carry a team on his back than Sam Ehlinger,” Matich said during ESPN’s halftime break on Saturday night. “He’s back for his senior season and I expect big things.”

Related: ESPN predicts Longhorns schedule game-by-game

Brad Crawford went on to say the Longhorns have their most talented team under Tom Herman in Austin. Given that his confidence derives from the quarterback, shows you the impact that Ehlinger has had on this team. The senior quarterback is without a doubt the leader in the locker room.

Under new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich, Ehlinger is expecting to carry the load for this team. Brennan Eagles, Jake Smith and Jordan Whittington are all expected to play larger roles in the offense. Losing Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay puts more pressure on Sam to succeed this coming season. However, he has plenty of help in the backfield with a trio of runners that will get their opportunity.

On the other side of the ball, the defense is expected to be much improved. Chris Ash is an “elite coach” according to former head coach Urban Meyer and he will have ample opportunities to prove it. Deploying a new pass rush that includes Joseph Ossai should generate more pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

On the backside D’Shawn Jamison and Caden Sterns are the guys expected to take the ball away in 2020. Chris Adimora is your likley starter at nickel and big things are expected of him. As a whole, the secondary has plenty of depth including B.J. Foster who could play multiple spots in the defense. All in all the Longhorns look to be a much better team than some think in 2020.
