UNC Football lands commitment from four-star defensive lineman

Mack Brown and the UNC football program have landed four-star defensive lineman Joel Starlings after an official visit to campus.

This weekend’s visit event has paid off for Mack Brown and the UNC football program.

Four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Joel Starlings[/autotag] was on campus for a visit this weekend along with other recruits and it went well enough for him to pledge his verbal commitment to the program. Starlings took to Twitter to announce that he’s committing to UNC, giving the Tar Heels their third commitment in the 2023 class.

The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Starlings hails out of Richmond, Virginia and is rated as a four-star recruit. He’s ranked No. 232 nationally, No. 33 defensive lineman, and the No. 4 player in the state of Virginia per the 247Sports rankings. He’s UNC’s highest-ranked commitment in the 2023 cycle.

Starlings had a total of 17 offers in his recruitment but UNC beat out Michigan, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Virginia, and West Virginia among others in this recruitment.

With other visitors on campus, UNC is hoping that Starlings starts a trend and the program can land some other big recruits in the coming weeks.

2023 Four-star defensive tackle Joel Starlings lists Oklahoma in his Top 5

Oklahoma Sooners land in the top 5 for a massive four-star defensive tackle out of Virginia, Joel Starlings.

With spring ball behind them, Oklahoma’s next major task is to turn up the heat on the recruiting trail. One way that could happen is to keep landing on top five lists of four-star defensive linemen.

The Sooners saw this exact scenario play out on Wednesday evening as they landed inside the top five for Virginia native and former Michigan commit Joel Starlings’ Top 5 list. The massive defensive tackle stands 6-foot-5 and over 300 pounds. Physically he already fits the mold of the type of defensive linemen Brent Venables wants in Crimson & Cream.

Starlings is a massive space-eater that could play either defensive tackle spots in a four-man front. His size would also allow a team to line him up as the nose tackle in a three-man front.

At the moment, it looks like he’s favoring a bunch of east coast schools in his final five. Oklahoma is the only real traditional football powerhouse on the list and the fact that he was just offered in February could mean there’s real interest on Starlings’ behalf to see what Oklahoma has to offer.

Starlings has visits set up with four of his top five with the Sooners set to host the talented defensive line prospect June 10 according to his Twitter profile. Starlings spoke with Brian Down of 247 Sports about what sticks out for him with Oklahoma.

Oklahoma is a great school and I am building a relationship the coaches. I know some people who there (Kelvin Gilliam and Damond Harmon) and they are telling me about the school. I am planning on going to visit June 9 just to get a good look at Oklahoma. – Down, 247Sports

Oklahoma’s recent forays into the east coast have paid dividends and look to have them firmly in a position to succeed

Ugh, was excited about him.

Similar to the 2022 class’ formation for Michigan football, it’s one step forward, one step back.

Back when the Wolverines were putting together the 2022 recruiting class, it always seemed like whenever the maize and blue would get a commitment, a decommitment would soon follow. On Sunday, both happened for Michigan.

After reeling in a four-star tight end in Andrew Rappleyea in the afternoon, the class which had grown to five is now back down to four. Richmond (Va.) Benedictine defensive tackle Joel Starlings had committed to Michigan the day after the Wolverines’ win over Ohio State, but on Sunday, he pulled back, announcing he was decommitting from the class.

Rated the No. 216 player in the country according to the 247Sports Composite, Starlings’ primary recruiter in Ann Arbor was Shaun Nua, the defensive line coach who departed for USC and Lincoln Riley this offseason.

It has begun.

Naturally, Michigan football throttling Ohio State to the tune of 42-27 was going to have some kind of decent payoff in recruiting, especially considering the giant guest list that was in Ann Arbor on Saturday. While things had been slow on the 2023 front, that suddenly is in the past tense.

On Sunday evening, the Wolverines reeled in a big-time defensive lineman in Richmond (Va.) Benedictine four-star Joel Starlings, who is rated as the No. 196 player in the 2023 class, regardless of position, according to the 247Sports Composite. He picked Michigan over offers from Georgia, Tennessee, Michigan State, Texas A&M, Penn State, and several other big programs.

Shaun Nua was Starling’s primary recruiter. Starling is listed at 6-foot-4, 305-pounds.
