Lions release veteran guard Joe Dahl

Dahl started 21 games in 5 seasons in Detroit

The Detroit Lions announced they have released former starting guard Joe Dahl.

It’s not an unexpected move. Dahl was due a salary of $2.675 million in 2021 as well as some roster bonuses, but he was not projected to be more than the top reserve guard on the team. Releasing the 28-year-old saves the Lions $2.84 million against the salary cap in 2021.

Dahl joined the Lions as a fifth-round pick out of Washington in the 2016 NFL draft. He worked his way into a starting position in 2019 after spot-starting and swinging between right and left guard in his first three years. He lost the starting gig to rookie Jonah Jackson in 2020.

Dahl should find a taker on the open market. Because he was cut, he will not factor into any compensatory draft pick equations.

Detroit Lions Week 17 inactives: Matthew Stafford and Frank Ragnow ACTIVE

The Detroit Lions have declared their game-day inactives for their Week 17 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Detroit Lions have declared their game-day inactives for their Week 17 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings.

After elevating C Evan Brown and DT Albert Huggins from the practice squad this week, the Lions’ roster has increased to 55-players. On a traditional week, the Lions would need to reduce that roster down to 46-players, but because they kept eight offensive linemen on their active game-day roster, they are now eligible to expand their roster to 48-players, meaning they need to declare seven of their 55-players inactive.

Here are those seven players.

Lions inactives list

  • WR Kenny Golladay (hip) — Ruled OUT
  • RT Tyrell Crosby (ankle) — Ruled OUT
  • IOL Joe Dahl (back) — Ruled OUT
  • LB Jamie Collins (neck)
  • OG Logan Stenberg
  • DT Albert Huggins
  • S Bobby Price

Golladay being ruled out means the Lions will once again start Marvin Jones, Danny Amendola, and Mohamad Sanu. Expect Quintez Cephus to get plenty of playing time, as he is the only receiver on the current active roster signed beyond this season.

Despite Crosby, Dahl, and Stenberg being ruled out, the Lions still have a starting offensive line they feel comfortable with — but if anyone gets injured, things get messy real quick.

Collins gave it a go on Friday and tried to get himself ready for today, but he was not healthy enough to play. Jahlani Tavai will replace him as the starting MIKE, and last week, it was Jarrad Davis stepping up as the second linebacker.

Huggins was elevated as insurance, but with Danny Shelton active, Huggins was not needed.

Price was signed to the active roster yesterday, and with him being inactive today, it’s a sign they wanted to get him under contract for future purposes.

Detroit Lions Week 17 injury declarations: Matthew Stafford, Frank Ragnow questionable

Examining the Detroit Lions injury declarations for their Wek 17 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Detroit Lions (5-10) have announced their injury declarations for their Week 17 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings (6-9) and while the Lions have ruled out three players, Matthew Stafford and Frank Ragnow appear likely to play.

Here’s a look at the Lions’ latest injury report, with the updated changes listed in bold.

Tyrell Crosby Ankle Limited Practice No Practice No Practice
Joe Dahl Back No Practice No Practice No Practice

After yesterday’s press conference it was clear Golladay’s season was over, and now with Crosby and Dahl also ruled out, their season comes to a close as well.

Hal Vaitai will continue to start at right tackle in place of Crosby, and Dahl’s absence will leave a vacancy at center behind Frank Ragnow. Expect practice squad center Evan Brown to either be signed or elevated on Saturday as insurance at the position.

Questionable

“Well there was no setback,” Interim coach Darrell Bevell said of Stafford in his pre-practice presser. “He’s still improving. I mean, he’s sore, he has some issues going on, but he was out there. He didn’t do a ton, but he was limited in practice. So, see how he goes today and what it feels like tomorrow.”

While he’s not out of the woods yet, it’d be a shock if Stafford missed this game.

Ragnow talked with the media today — talked (!) — which is usually a precursor to him returning to game action. He was in good spirits and appears ready to play on Sunday.

Collins practiced for the first time in two weeks today, and while that is a good sign for his availability, things could still go either way at this point. This could come down to a game-time decision.

No Injury Designation

Danny Amendola Non-injury related No Practice No Practice Full Practice

Amendola returned to practice today and doesn’t carry an injury designation into the game. He’s good to go.

Unless any of these three are activated on Saturday, their seasons will also come to a close.

Detroit Lions Week 17 injury report: Matthew Stafford returns to practice on Thursday

The Detroit Lions (5-10) were back on the field on Thursday, preparing to wrap up their season with a Week 17 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings (6-9).

The Detroit Lions (5-10) were back on the field on Thursday, preparing to wrap up their season with a Week 17 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings (6-9).

Here’s a look at the Lions’ Thursday injury report, with the updated changes from last week’s injury status listed in bold.

Sadly, Golladay’s season appears to be over.

Amendola seems more likely to play with a non-injury, but without knowing why he is missing games, his status is unknown at this time.

Crosby being downgraded is not a good sign, but with Hal Vaitai and Oday Aboushi healthy, the Lions can still play capable players on the rights side of the offensive line.

Dahl and Collins missing another practice is not ideal for their chances of playing this week. They’ll have one more day to heal up, or their season could end on Friday as well.

Limited practice

Matthew Stafford Right thumb, ribs, ankle No Practice Limited Practice
Frank Ragnow Throat Limited Practice Limited Practice

“Matthew (Stafford) – you’re going to have to convince me a lot that this guy is not going to go,” Interim coach Darrell Bevell said. “He’s as tough as they come, tough as nails. He wants to be out there. I think, really, those two things are probably the most important. If the guy wants to – I always say this, I always say that your mind is a powerful thing. You can do a lot if you just believe in that. The guy wants it. There’s not a doubt in my mind that he won’t make it happen, but obviously, we’re going to continue to go through the week and see how it goes.”

Getting Ragnow back is a great first step towards getting the Lions anticipated starting offensive line on the field. They have not played together since Week 11 and the last time the starting unit played an entire game together was Week 7 against the Falcons — two and half months ago.

Vikings’ Report

Detroit Lions Week 17 injury report: Matthew Stafford misses practice on Wednesday

Examining the Detroit Lions injury report as they prepare to take on the Minnesota Vikings on Week 17 of the 2020 season.

The Detroit Lions (5-10) and their Week 17 opponent, the Minnesota Vikings (6-9), have both officially been eliminated from the 2020 playoffs, but pride is still on the line in the 2020 season finale.

Here’s a look at the Lions’ Wednesday injury report, with the updated changes from last week’s injury status listed in bold.

Injured reserve

No Practice

Player Injury Wednesday Thursday Friday
Matthew Stafford Right thumb, ribs, ankle No Practice
Kenny Golladay Hip No Practice
Joe Dahl Back No Practice
Jamie Collins Neck No Practice

“With Matthew (Stafford),” interim coach Darrell Bevell said at his Wednesday press conference, “I think the best thing for him is that he’s got the best feel and read for his body. So, we’ll continue to progress like we normally do with him. Some of the other injuries are resolving, so we’ll see how this injury on his ankle resolves as well by the end of the week.”

Golladay continues to work to get back, but he’s still unable to practice. The questions surrounding Golladay heading to injured reserve are being asked more frequently, with no real solid answers to be found.

Dahl exited last week’s game at halftime and not being able to practice today is not an encouraging sign for his availability this weekend. He had started the last two weeks at center, but Frank Ragnow sounds like he is trending in the right direction, which would put Dahl back in a reserve role if he is able to play.

Collins missed all of last week’s practices and was given a questionable designation, but was unable to play and was deemed inactive. Another missed practice is not ideal, but if the Lions thought he may have a chance to play last week, there’s a chance he’s in the same boat again.

Limited practice

Player Injury Wednesday Thursday Friday
Frank Ragnow Throat Limited Practice
Tyrell Crosby Ankle Limited Practice

“Yes, he is speaking,” Bevell said of Ragnow. “Really, what I’m asking him to do is, I don’t want him to overextend it or anything during the week. So, the communication will be minimal. I mean he’s talking and all that, but I don’t want him barking out any calls or signals that way, just so that we can continue to let it heal as much as it can all the way to Sunday. I think that’s kind of the prudent thing to do. He’s on board with that.”

Crosby returns to practice for the first time in three weeks and if he is able to get himself ready for the finale, he should jump right back into his starting role at right tackle. If that happens, it will be interesting to see if coaches push prized free agent Hal Vaitai in at right guard, or stick with Oday Aboushi, who has quietly been very steady — and quite frankly, playing better than Vaitai.

Vikings’ Report

Minnesota starting running back Dalvin Cook will miss this weekend’s game as he is heading home to be with his family after the unexpected passing of his father James on Tuesday.

Additionally, Vikings left tackle Riley Reiff has been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list and his status for this game is very much in question.

Teams final injury reports

Injured reserve/COVID-19

Detroit Lions Frank Ragnow has been downgraded to OUT vs Titans

The Detroit Lions have downgraded starting center Frank Ragnow to OUT for the team’s Week 15 match-up with the Tennessee Titans.

The Detroit Lions have downgraded starting center Frank Ragnow to OUT for the team’s Week 15 match-up with the Tennessee Titans.

Ragnow suffered a fractured throat in last Sunday’s game versus the Green Bay Packers and despite playing every snap that game, by the then end of it, he had lost the ability to talk.

After examination during the week, it was discovered that Ragnow’s injury existed in the vocal cord cartilage, not the bone, and fortunately, he was still able to breathe and swallow normally. Unfortunately, the stress on his vocal cords still prevented him from speaking.

Ragnow visited a specialist on Friday, and while the team listed him as questionable earlier in the day, it appears they were given further information on his status and downgraded him to out.

The Lions don’t carry a reserve center on the active roster, but starting left guard Jonah Jackson has experience playing center in college, and former starting guard Joe Dahl has been cross-trained at center since he arrived in Detroit in 2016. Dahl said on Thursday that he feels very comfortable at the position if called upon.

While there isn’t a true center on the 53-man roster, they do carry two on the practice squad: Marcus Martin and Evan Brown.

Martin has been with the Lions most of the season, was a protected practice squad player this week, and was previously elevated by the Lions in Week 9. He has 24 NFL starts under his belt and seems likely to be elevated once again this week — which typically happens on Saturday — if only to back up Jackson or Dahl.

Detroit Lions Week 11 injury designations: D’Andre Swift, Kenny Golladay ruled OUT

The Detroit Lions (4-5) have declared their injury designations ahead of their Week 11 matchup with the Carolina Panthers (3-7).

The Detroit Lions (4-5) have declared their injury designations ahead of their Week 11 matchup with the Carolina Panthers (3-7) and they will be without offensive starters D’Andre Swift (running back), Kenny Golladay (wide receiver), and Danny Amendola (slot receiver).

Here’s a look at the Lions’ full injury report, with the updated changes in injury status listed in bold.

Danny Amendola Hip No Practice No Practice No Practice OUT

Coach Matt Patricia gave no clear answers surrounding Swift’s mid-week injury at his Friday press conference, but based on the league’s concussion rules, it was pretty clear Swift was not going to be able to clear the protocols required to play this week. Running backs coach Kyle Caskey said that Adrian Peterson will get the start on Sunday, and Kerryon Johnson will fill the Swift role “as much as possible”. Jonathan Williams should see his first action of the season as a third option.

Golladay got some practice time in on Wednesday, and even tested himself on Thursday, but the Lions are taking it slow with him, likely hoping to get him back for Thanksgiving. Losing Golladay makes things challenging for the wide receiver group, but also losing Amendola makes things even harder.

With Marvin Jones the only starting wide receiver available, Marvin Hall, Quinte Cephus, and Jamal Agnew will all see their snaps increase regardless of who technically starts. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Mohamad Sanu elevated from the practice squad to give the group depth.

Stafford missed practice on Wednesday, got in two limited practices on Thursday and Friday, was able to escape without any setbacks, and despite being listed as questionable, is expected to start on Sunday.

Vaitai missed last week after re-injuring his foot the week prior, and while a week of limited practices is encouraging, the fact he did not get in a full practice leaves the doubt door open.

Davis, like Vaitai, is coming off a missed game, and while limited is good, there are still some concerns.

Hand, Bryant, and Harris all suffered mid-week injuries so they are likely headed to a Saturday evaluation before the team travels. If they’re not downgraded then, expect them to be available on Sunday.

Detroit Lions Thursday Week 11 injury report: D’Andre Swift misses practice with concussion

Examining the Detroit Lions Thursday injury report as they prepare to take on the Carolina Panthers in Week 11.

The Detroit Lions (4-5) are headed to Charlotte, North Carolina in Week 11 to take on a Carolina Panthers (3-7) team that is expected to be without their best player in Christian McCaffrey and potentially their quarterback Teddy Bridgewater — who is unlikely to play due to an MCL injury.

Unfortunately, the Lions are also dealing with injuries to some of their top offensive players including quarterback Matthew Stafford, RB D’Andre Swift, and WR Kenny Golladay.

Here’s a look at the Lions’ full injury report, with the updated changes in injury status listed in bold.

Injured reserve

No Practice

Player Injury Wednesday Thursday Friday Designation
D’Andre Swift Concussion Not listed No Practice
Kenny Golladay Hip Limited Practice No Practice
Danny Amendola Hip No Practice No Practice

Based on the league’s rules surrounding returning from a concussion, it’s highly unlikely Swift will be able to clear the protocols ahead of Sunday. Swift would need to be symptom-free, then pass a workout regimen, participate in a non-contact practice, then a contact practice, and with only one practice remaining, it looks like he will be miss Sunday’s game. The Lions will likely turn to Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson, while Jonathan Williams should see his first action of the year.

Golladay being downgraded to no practice is a bit concerning but the pool media reporter suggested he looked ready to practice during the allotted media time — meaning there is a chance this could just be a rest and recovery day, but it could also mean he needs more time to heal.

Amendola missing two practices is not a good sign, as he rarely takes rest periods. The Lions do have options who can operate out of the slot — Marvin Hall, Jamal Agnew, and Quintez Cephus — but they are all different players than Amendola.

The Stafford rollercoaster continues. Injured Sunday, but didn’t miss a snap. Negative X-rays on Monday, then Tuesday reports suggest “a partially torn ligament“. He missed practice on Wednesday, then got in some limited work on Thursday. Despite the ups and downs, the overriding theme has been that most expect him to play.

Marvin Jones and Bryant also saw upgrades in participation from Wednesday to Thursday, while Hand and Kearse were both added to the injury report, shifting from full to limited practices. We won’t know until tomorrow when their injuries occurred and how it will impact their status for the weekend.
