Dan Hurley discussed his underwear and cursed in front of President Biden during UConn’s White House visit

Never change, Dan Hurley.

UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley is unapologetically himself, no matter what. He reminded everyone while at the White House on Tuesday.

After winning his second consecutive collegiate men’s basketball national championship in 2024, the NCAA head coach was invited to celebrate his title at the White House with President Joe Biden.

Hurley had some highlights of his own during the celebration, including a moment in which he discussed his lucky dragon underwear. It wasn’t the talking point that many would have used if they had the opportunity to visit the White House, but it was what Hurley chose anyway.

Warning: The following is potentially not suitable for work.

Later in the visit, Hurley then spoke about the honor he had on that day.

According to the head coach, he thought it would get easier to speak at the White House this time around because it was no longer his first time there to celebrate a national championship.

Instead, however, he was it was “scary as [expletive]” before getting a big laugh from everyone listening to him speak.

Never change, Coach Hurley. You are perfect just the way you are.

The nonsense Nick Castellanos’ eerily-timed home runs meme is unfunny and lost the plot

The Nick Castellanos meme doesn’t make any sense!

Fans know that Philadelphia Phillies’ Nick Castellanos seems to hit a home run whenever a major news story breaks.

But this meme could use a break.

Remember: Castellanos originally caught attention for hitting a home run during an apology from former Reds broadcaster Thom Brennaman in 2020. As memes tend to do, though, this trend has evolved over the years as Castellanos has only continued to hit it out of the park during serious moments.

This meme had yet another absurd moment in the sun this weekend.

Not long after President Joe Biden announced he would withdraw from the 2024 U.S. presidential election on Sunday afternoon, Castellanos managed to predictably hit a home run. It was silly and a lot of bettors made some money on the coincidental dinger:

Fans love this absurdity but there is one major problem that they seem to forget.

This meme started because Castellanos interrupted a serious moment on TV after Brennaman apologized for making offensive and homophobic remarks. That isn’t historic. It’s just a very hateful use of an awful slur and the reason that the announcer was out of a job for several years.

Now, this meme has become something completely different and, consequently, far less funny. In Castellanos’ own words, as he told Pitcher List: “It’s like, terrible moments.”

It is hardly connected to the original incident of when Castellanos hit a home run while something significant happened during the broadcast.

To his credit: Castellanos has also hit home runs during an homage to fallen veterans and while the broadcasting booth mentioned that former Phillies manager Charlie Manuel suffered a stroke. Those were wild and extremely unlikely examples of the meme coming to life.

A home run on the same day that Biden announced that he won’t seek re-election, however, is hardly the same thing.

Sure, it is eerie how often Castellanos seems to go yard on the same day as a historic event. But if you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it endlessly: We live in strange and uncertain times. As his wife tweeted in 2021:

“PSA to all Nick Castellanos joke tweets: something [expletive] happens everyday in the world find a new joke”

Major news is literally happening around us all the time. Perhaps it isn’t the hardest challenge to find a pro athlete able to accomplish something on their field of play on the same day that something else significant happens. We are trying to fit a round peg into a round hole and then act surprised when it fits.

If the broadcasters on the call were talking about Biden’s decision exactly before Castellanos hit a home run, then we would have a more interesting story.

Otherwise, this is just confirmation bias of something that has just become a bit of gibberish copypasta.

Joe Biden withdrawing from the U.S. presidential election had the sports world making so many memes

Sports fans remain undefeated.

Amid intense speculation and pressure from inside Democratic circles since his debate performance, President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he would withdraw from the U.S. presidential election against Donald Trump.

Biden, who turns 82 in November, would have been the first U.S. president to hold office into his mid-80s had he been re-elected. And there was already growing doubt about his ability to handle the office for four more years.

Despite the major political implications (and world-impacting consequences of the decision), the sports world reacted to the news just how we would have expected … with plenty of jokes and memes.

This was how Twitter/X reacted

Donald Trump challenges Joe Biden to charity golf match at Doral

Trump said, adding that if Biden won Trump would write a $1 million check to the charity of the president’s choice.

DORAL, Florida — Donald Trump held a massive rally on the 10th hole of the manicured grounds of his golf resort west of Miami Tuesday night — and challenged President Biden to a contest on the links as well as a one-on-one debate.

Trump spoke before a sweltering crowd and sounded familiar 2024 presidential campaign themes ahead of next week’s Republican National Convention. The speech followed a day after Republican National Committee officials released the party’s platform. Many of the ideas in the document are ones Trump has talked up in rally speeches since leaving office, including a “drill baby drill” energy policy, more tax cuts and the “largest” deportation effort in U.S. history.

No less prominent in his Tuesday rally address was an attack on President Joe Biden’s competence — an issue that has surged to the forefront of political conversations since a June 27 debate in which Biden appeared at times confused and incoherent.

Trump again reiterated his “offer” to another debate with the current president. This time, however, he said it would be “man-to-man” and “no holds barred” with no moderators.

Then Trump upped the ante by also challenging Biden to an 18-hole contest on his Trump National Doral golf course, the famed “Blue Monster.”

“It will be among the most watched sporting events in history,” Trump said, adding that if Biden won Trump would write a $1 million check to the charity of the president’s choice.

But the 45th president said he doubted his successor would accept.

“I bet you he doesn’t take the offer, because he is all talk,” he said.

Michigan Attorney General uses tortured Alex Morgan analogy to pressure Joe Biden

One of these things is not like the other

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is joining the growing ranks of Democrats calling on Joe Biden to step aside, but has become the first to do so using a tortured U.S. women’s national team analogy.

Biden has been under increasing pressure to not seek a second term as U.S. president after a disastrous debate against challenger Donald Trump last month.

Pressure has been building on Biden to make way ahead of November’s election, with some Democrats hoping a late switch will help stave off Trump’s return to the presidency.

Nessel appears to be among that group but rather than simply coming out and saying it, she instead posted a coded message on Sunday night that attempted to draw parallels between Biden and USWNT striker Alex Morgan.

“I adore Alex Morgan. One of the greatest of all time. But she’s aged significantly from her prime playing days & gracefully accepted that in order to win the gold it was time to pass the baton,” Nessel said on X.

“No one will ever forget her incredible accomplishments, but Alex just wants what’s best for the team and for America,” she added. “That’s what makes her a true champion.”

Unfortunately for those in Nessel’s camp, there is one key difference between Morgan and Biden. The veteran striker’s Olympic roster omission was entirely not her decision.

By contrast, Biden will be the final arbiter of his own fate, and he appears far from ready to “gracefully” accept that it’s time to pass the baton.

Marshawn Lynch to start podcast with California Gov. Gavin Newsom

Marshawn Lynch to start podcast with California Governor Gavin Newsom

There’s an old saying: Politics makes strange bedfellows. Right now, we are seeing that come true in a rather unusual way. On Wednesday morning, it was announced that former Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch and his agent Doug Hendrickson are launching a podcast this summer …

… with California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Huh. I can honestly say I did not see this one coming!

The trio announced the podcast, called Politickin’, on Instagram. It will debut on July 15. The summary of the podcast on the iHeartMedia website reads: “Gavin Newsom like you’d never heard him and Marshawn Lynch exactly how you’d expect him.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter gave a little more insight on the podcast in the tweet below.

It is always an interesting crossover when the worlds of sports and politics intersect, and it’s not often that there is such a direct connection like this. I’ll admit, my curiosity has certainly been piqued.

Additionally, I can’t help but wonder about the timing of this. I am not a political pundit, nor is anyone coming to Seahawks Wire for political analysis. But Newsom’s name has been floated over the past few years as a potential replacement for President Joe Biden. Recently, those calls have increased among certain Democrats following the President’s debate performance in late June.

Could Newsom be engaging in a new tactic to grow his popularity and relatability with younger voters? If this is truly his plan, pairing up with one of the most iconic, charismatic and popular athletes is a creative way to try to accomplish it.

Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton weighs in on the two-party political system

Kyle Hamilton says America should have more choices than just a two party political system.

Current President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are the presumptive Democratic and Republican party nominees for the 2024 presidential election.

A portion of the American population disapproves of both men, and this group of potential voters is large enough to have their own designation.

They are referred to in the media as “the double haters.”

While Ravens Free Safety Kyle Hamilton didn’t fully classify himself as one of the “double haters,” he certainly expressed his desire for more candidate choices.

Hamilton tweeted the following during Thursday night’s Presidential debate:

While the ballot will include several names beyond Biden and Trump, no candidate outside the two major political parties stands a realistic chance of winning.

It truly is a two-party system, and these days, collaboration and cooperation between the two parties are as minimal as they have ever been in modern American history.

What Hamilton posted here is undoubtedly not controversial by any means. He wasn’t the only Ravens figure to express his opinions on last night’s Presidential debate.

Robert Griffin III, who played in 14 games across three seasons with the Ravens, posted the following:

Again, this is certainly not a minority opinion, as a good percentage of Americans would agree with RG3’s take. The two men on the debate stage had a combined age of 159.

One man struggled with presenting himself coherently, while the other, while more lucid, struggled with presenting factual information. The debate provided more material for the double haters, a group that would probably like the takes made by Hamilton and Griffin.

Atlanta urges fans to avoid driving during USMNT/presidential debate doubleheader

There will be a unique double feature in the Georgia capital on Thursday night

There will be plenty of eyes on Atlanta on Thursday night.

The Georgia capital will be home to a unique doubleheader. First, the U.S. men’s national team will face Panama in the Copa América at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Three hours after the USMNT’s 6 p.m. ET kickoff, a very different sort of competition will begin just three miles away at CNN Studios: Joe Biden and Donald Trump will face off in their first of two presidential debates ahead of November’s election.

Naturally, the two events are set to cause something of a traffic apocalypse in a city that is already known for congestion issues.

A statement from the Atlanta Police Department (APD) released this week urged anybody out and about on Thursday to avoid driving if at all possible.

“If you are planning an evening out in Atlanta, for the game, dinner or any other of our offerings, we encourage you to plan ahead and anticipate limited parking and heavier than usual traffic,” the APD said.

“There will be several road closures in the areas surrounding the debate and your route could be impacted. Give yourself extra time to reach your destination and plan for parking spaces to fill quickly.”

The APD then urged people to take MARTA, the city’s train system, or use a ride-share service.

In a statement of its own, MARTA said it would be providing additional rail service on Thursday to accomodate the influx of riders.

The presidential debate will take place in Midtown, with the USMNT-Panama match in Downtown. According to Google Maps, the distance between the two venues is just 2.8 miles.

Chiefs gave Joe Biden a helmet during their White House visit

Andy Reid and Clark Hunt presented President Joe Biden with a #Chiefs helmet during their visit to the White House on Friday. | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chief officially had their second-consecutive White House visit as Super Bowl champions on Friday, May 31st.

After a speech from President Joe Biden congratulating the team for their Super Bowl LVIII victory, there was an emphasis to remember the many affected by the parade shooting in Kansas City.

The president called upon Travis Kelce to have an opportunity to finally address the nation after the All-Pro tight end was interrupted by Patrick Mahomes during last year’s ceremony.

“My fellow Americans, it’s nice to see you all again,” Kelce started. “I’m not going to lie, President Biden. They told me if I came up here, I was going to get tased, so I’m going back to my spot.”

Team owner Clark Hunt and head coach Andy Reid would present President Biden with a Chiefs helmet instead of a jersey, which they had already given him last year. At the end of the ceremony, with encouragement from Kansas City’s players at the podium, President Biden took time to try on the helmet, officially making him a team member.

The ceremony seemed to be fun for the Chiefs, who continue to raise the bar on their Super Bowl celebrations. A three-peat has been the talk of the offseason and would present Kansas City’s players another reason to visit the White House in 2025.
