Studs and Duds from Jets loss in Week 3 to Bengals

Studs and Duds from Jets loss in Week 3 to Bengals

The emotional high the Jets were on after coming back to beat the Browns in Week 2 quickly turned back into rock bottom as the Jets looked completely flat in a 27-12 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, dropping the Jets to 1-2 on the year. Let’s check out some studs and duds from this one.

Instant analysis after Jets get embarrassed by Bengals at home

Another ugly performance on offense highlighted the Jets’ long day in Week 3 as they fall to 1-2 with a 27-12 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Let’s do a quick recap of what was not a good day for Gang Green.

Quick Hits

  • If this was it for Joe Flacco, what a way to go out. Jets fans will be praying all week Zach Wilson will be cleared this week and can play next week against the Steelers.
  • The Jets needed to get their pass rush going in this one. This was the week for it to happen, as Joe Burrow entered Week 3 having been sacked 13 times. The Jets got to him just twice and neither sack came from a defensive end (one for Quinnen Williams, one for Sheldon Rankins).
  • On the flipside, the Jets once again couldn’t keep a clean pocket for Joe Flacco, as he was sacked four times, led by 2.5 sacks for Trey Hendrickson, who also forced two fumbles.
  • The injuries kept coming for the Jets. WR Garrett Wilson was banged up with a rib injury but was able to come back in the second half. The injury we’re watching now, however, is linebacker Quincy Williams, who was carted off with a knee injury. The team put a cast on Williams to immobilize his leg.
  • Also on the injury front, George Fant left the game with a knee injury and the lack of depth at the position started to show, Conor McDermott took his place and was the direct beneficiary of a couple of Flacco’s sacks. Duane Brown can’t return soon enough…if he is even able to.
  • Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed had another strong game, but you wonder what happened on the touchdown where there seemed to be a communication error between Gardner, Quincy Williams and Lamarcus Joyner (who also had a nice play on the early trick play by the Bengals).
  • Hey, at least the Jets seem to have their kicker. Greg Zuerlein has performed well since his Week 1 outing, going 4/4 Sunday and being the only provider of points for the Jets.
  • Jordan Whitehead must do better at tackling. That touchdown at the end of the first quarter easily could have been prevented.

Key Stat

7/14: The Jets entered Week 3 as one of the worst defenses on third down, allowing opponents to convert 52% of their third down attempts. That trend continued against the Bengals, as Cincinnati went 7/14 on third down (50%). In fact, all three of Cincinnati’s touchdowns came on third down. The Jets on offense went 7/18 on third down.

Game Balls

Greg Zuerlein: The only person to score for the Jets Sunday as Zuerlein went 4/4 on field goals, all four at least 40 yards and two from 50+.

Sheldon Rankins and Quinnen Williams: The Jets were really hoping to get some positive work from their defensive line this week. They at least did with Rankins and Williams. Both recorded a sack and a tackle for a loss. Rankins also was credited with a quarterback hit while Williams had three.

Top Takeaway

Zach Wilson can’t return soon enough: This offense does have potential. The running game can be there and the receivers can make plays. But when you have a statue for a quarterback, defenses can pin their ears back and just go after him and there isn’t much he can do. That’s Joe Flacco now. At least Zach Wilson can add some layers to this offense with his mobility when he’s fully healthy. The hope for the Jets is he returns next week against the Steelers to give them a chance to be 2-2 heading into their first AFC East game against the Dolphins in Week 5.

Lack of pass-rush and offense has the Jets facing double-digit halftime deficit

Jets corners are shining, but overall, the day has been long so far for New York.

So much for all that momentum from Cleveland. The Jets have come out absolutely flat against the Bengals. At least Greg Zuerlein has been good so far, going 3/3 on the day. But the Jets trail the Bengals at the half, 20-9.

The hope was that the Jets would get some pressure on Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. They’ve gotten a little pressure but so far, just one sack of Burrow, done by Quinnen Williams, who now currently leads the Jets with 1.5 sacks this season.

Not only that, the third-down defense has once again failed the Jets when they needed it the most, including a back-breaking touchdown on a 3rd and 7 from Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd, where he bounced off of two Jets defenders, Jordan Whitehead and Michael Carter II, before going 56 yards for the score on the last play of the first quarter. Overall, the Bengals are 4/8 on third down, with both of their touchdowns coming on third down. Four of the Bengals’ seven possessions have ended with points.

The Jets have already allowed two Bengals receivers to crack 90 yards (Tee Higgins 93, Boyd 91). Burrow is 14/25 for 215 yards and two touchdowns with a QB rating of 111.2.

The Jets offense has shown almost no life, going back to their ways from Week 1 against the Ravens. After scoring field goals in their first two possessions, the Jets have punted three times and Joe Flacco threw an interception to Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson. Flacco has also been sacked twice and has a quarterback rating of 56, going just 12/20 for 119 yards with the pick.

The Jets are 4/10 on third down and are being outgained by the Bengals, 221-140 in the first half. They have held the Bengals to just 13 rushing yards, but only have 22 rushing yards of their own.

One positive has again been the Jets cornerbacks. D.J. Reed and Sauce Gardner are once again showing they are incredible cornerbacks, including Gardner making some terrific plays against Bengals stud wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. Gardner is not afraid to go toe-to-toe with anybody. He already has two pass breakups, while Reed, C.J. Mosley and Quincy Williams each have one.

Garrett Wilson also continued his strong start, but he is currently questionable to return with a rib injury. The Bengals are now without defensive tackle D.J. Reader, who is out with a knee injury.

The Jets get the ball to start the second half.

Final score predictions for Jets vs. Bengals

Final score predictions for Jets vs. Bengals

Coming off the emotional victory over the Cleveland Browns in Week 2, the Jets are hoping to ride their newfound momentum into a huge Week 3 showdown with the defending AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals at home. Can the Jets make it two in a row against the Bengals?

The Jets are hoping to have a breakout party with their pass rush against a team and a quarterback in Joe Burrow that has suffered a league-high 13 sacks through two weeks. If there is a matchup where the Jets can take advantage, it is their defensive line against the Bengals’ offensive line that has a right tackle in La’el Collins dealing with back issues but is expected to play and also has a left side of the line that has gotten off to a tough start with left tackle Jonah Williams (ten total pressures allowed, per PFF) and rookie left guard Cordell Volson (seven total pressures). This could be a great day for defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

The other big matchup is obviously the Jets secondary and their strong cornerback duo of D.J. Reed and Sauce Gardner against the trio of Ja’Marr Chase, Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins. This is going to be so fascinating to see how the Jets travel their cornerbacks and how they defend the three receivers. This is also why it will be so important for the Jets’ pass rush to get home and limit the opportunities Chase and company will see Sunday.

Here’s thinking the pass rush will get there, Burrow gets sacked a few times and the Jets start clicking more on offense in what should be the final game with Joe Flacco at quarterback.

Prediction: Jets 24, Bengals 20

Trenches, especially pass rush, key in Week 3 for Jets in hopes of sending Bengals to 0-3

Pass rush, on both sides of the ball, may be the biggest key for the Jets in getting to 2-1.

The game of football starts and ends in the trenches, right? Well, at least the big boys think so. They do all the work and get almost none of the credit. But if the Jets want to send the defending AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals to an 0-3 start, they’ll need both sides of the line to come up big, especially on defense.

The Jets have talked about pass rush all week. They talked about how they need it to improve and want to see more of it. New York is averaging 1.5 sacks per game this season. That is tied for 23rd in the league through two weeks. Only five teams are averaging less, one of them happens to be New York’s opponent this week, the Bengals, who have just two sacks total this season. The others averaging less are the Dolphins, Saints, Raiders and Cardinals.

But if there’s a week for the Jets to boost that sack total, it’s this week. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has already been sacked 13 times this season (six against Pittsburgh, seven against Dallas). While some of the blame can be put on the offensive line, some of the blame also has to be put on Burrow. He has a tendency thus far to hold on to the ball a bit too long and is almost inviting the sacks himself. According to Pro Football Focus, eight of the 13 sacks have been charged to the offensive line. That should be music to the ears of the Jets’ defensive line, especially former Bengal Carl Lawson.

Ben Solak of The Ringer wrote a great article about not just Burrow taking sacks, but the disconnect in the Bengals.

Not only are the Bengals dealing with offensive line issues on the field, but their starting right tackle, La’el Collins, is perhaps dealing with a setback from the back injury that kept him out for most of training camp. However, the Bengals and head coach Zac Taylor are optimistic Collins will play Sunday.

Either way, the Jets have a chance to take advantage of an offensive line that is still coming together and has a rookie at left guard in Cordell Volson, a matchup that Quinnen Williams should be salivating over. PFF has charged Volson with two sacks allowed and seven total pressures. Only left tackle Jonah Williams (three sacks allowed, ten total pressures) has allowed more.

Williams only has a half-sack through two games but Sunday could be a big day for him in stopping the Bengals attack. It’s a good bet he’ll get at least one on Burrow.

On the flip side, the Bengals have struggled to get to the quarterback. As mentioned before, the Bengals have just two sacks so far, one each from B.J. Hill and Sam Hubbard. The Jets’ offensive line has struggled at times to keep Joe Flacco clean, allowing five sacks through two games. Max Mitchell has been charged with two sacks and one each for George Fant and Max Mitchell. But against Cincinnati, the Jets are facing a front line that hasn’t generated much pressure themselves. Hubbard and D.J. Reader each have seven pressures, per PFF. No other defensive lineman has more than three. In fact, no other Bengal has more than three.

If the Jets’ front four can get finally home and the offensive line figures out a way to clean up their act and keep Flacco upright, the Jets may very well find themselves above .500 for the first time under head coach Robert Saleh.

Jets open as 4.5-point underdogs in Week 3 vs. Bengals

The Jets open as 4.5-point underdogs despite being at home and having a better record than Cincinnati.

The Jets are coming off an insane comeback victory against the Cleveland Browns on the road to move to 1-1. The Bengals lost again on a last-second field goal against the Dallas Cowboys on the road to drop to 0-2. The Bengals are on the road against the Jets in Week 3.

No matter, says the sportsbooks. Our friends at Tipico Sportsbook have the Jets as 4.5-point underdogs to the defending AFC champions. Granted, sure, the Bengals still have a ton of talent on their roster and easily have the quarterback advantage with Joe Burrow. However, that same Joe Burrow has already been sacked 13 times this season and not all of them have been the fault of the offensive line.

With all the recent developments, while it’s understandable for the Bengals to be the favorites in this one, that spread still feels a little high. The Jets are riding momentum and not only can keep this game within 4.5 points, it’s certainly not at all crazy to think the Jets can beat the Bengals. History buffs will remember that exact scenario happening last season with Mike White at quarterback.

The Jets are +190 on Tipico to win straight up and the over/under is currently set at 45.5.

USA TODAY NFL Power Rankings: Jets drop 2 spots after historic loss

Check out where the Jets stand in the latest edition of the USA TODAY NFL power rankings.

After three consecutive wins, the Jets fell back to earth by handing the Cinncinati Bengals their first win of the season on Sunday. Now 4-8 on the season, the Jets moved down two spots in the latest edition of USA TODAY’s NFL power rankings.

New York moved down from No. 19 to No. 21 after losing to the Bengals, 22-6. The Jets could not string four wins together after coming out flat in a lackluster post-Thanksgiving loss.

With Sunday’s loss, the Jets became the first team in NFL history to lose twice in one season to teams with 0-7 records or worse.

The Jets could not stop a red-hot Andy Dalton, who was getting the ball out quickly and taking advantage of the Jets’ deficiencies in the secondary in his return as Cincinnatti’s starting quarterback.

Jamal Adams, Arthur Maulet and Brian Poole were all injured or playing banged up as Dalton picked apart a team masquerading as contenders.

The Jets’ sluggish effort can be summarized by one statistic: the team failed to make one offensive trip to the red zone.

As for the rest of the AFC East, the 9-3 Bills moved up two spots to No. 9 after knocking off the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. The Dolphins came away victorious after upsetting the Eagles and moved up two spots to No. 27. The Patriots fell out of the top five and landed at No. 6 following a Sunday night loss to the Texans in Houston.

Rounding out the top five are the Ravens at No. 1, the Saints at No. 2, the Seahawks at No. 3, the 49ers at No. 4 and the Texans at No. 5.

4 interesting stats from the Jets’ Week 13 loss to Bengals

In Sunday’s loss in Cincinnati, New York became the first team in NFL history to lose twice in one season to teams with 0-7 records or worse

The Jets lost 22-6 on Sunday to a team that had lost 13 games in a row.

The Jets’ eighth loss of the season, a lackluster 22-6 deafeat at the hands of the Bengals, ensures the team will have its fourth straight non-winning season and eighth in the last nine years. After winning three straight games, the Jets overlooked the Bengals and fell flat on their faces in a sluggish post-Thanksgiving loss.

Adam Gase’s offense could never get going and the unit didn’t wake up despite an urgent desire to avoid another letdown. On the other side of the football, Gregg Williams got a valiant effort from his defense in the second half, even with Maurice Canady seeing a majority of snaps at cornerback and Jamal Adams injured.

Let’s take a look at some interesting stats from Gang Green’s latest embarrassing loss.

The wrong side of NFL history

(David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports)

After losing to the Miami Dolphins and handing a team actively trying to lose their first win, it didn’t seem like the Jets could get any lower. On Sunday, they did.

The Jets became the first team in NFL history to lose twice in one season to teams with 0-7 records or worse. The last time the Jets lost to a team that was 0-10 or worse was 1980 when they lost to the 0-14 New Orleans Saints at Shea Stadium.

Tearful Jamal Adams in walking boot after loss to Bengals

Jamal Adams has a walking boot on his left foot after the Jets’ loss to the Bengals.

If losing to the Bengals wasn’t bad enough for the Jets, they endured an injury to their best player.

Jamal Adams entered the locker room with a walking boot on his left foot after Sunday’s 22-6 loss to the Bengals. Adams said after the game that he injured it on the first series of the game but played through it. Adams was ineffective, as he only recorded one tackle for the game.

Adams, tearful while speaking to reporters, said he’s not sure what the severity of the injury is. Adam Gase didn’t mention anything after the game about Adams getting hurt.

The 23-year-old safety has been on a tear over the last few games, Sunday’s performance was one of his worst to date. On the season, Adams has 64 combined tackles, 6.5 sacks, six pass defenses and one interception.

The Jets can’t afford to be without their star safety. He is the heart and soul of this team. Meanwhile, the defense has been hit with enough injuries that they’re running out of healthy bodies.

We’ll have to wait and see what Adams’ injury is, but he’ll likely get an MRI to see what is going on with that left foot. Until then, his status for the rest of the season remains in question.

Adam Gase, offensive line among Jets’ Studs & Duds in loss to Bengals

The Jets dropped their second game to a winless opponent this season and are now 4-8 with four games remaining after their 22-6 loss in Ohio

The Jets lost to a team that is 1-18 in its last 19 games on Sunday.

Adam Gase’s squad was a no show in Cincinnati, thinking they already had the game won when they arrived. Instead, New York was on the wrong side of NFL history for the second time this season.

The Jets gave the 0-7 Miami Dolphins their first win. No NFL team has ever given two teams who started 0-7 or worse their first wins of the season. New York became that team Sunday, handing Cincinnati its first win of the season and giving Zac Taylor the first win of his head coaching career.

For the Jets, it was two steps back in the wrong direction. Sam Darnold ended the game with a pronounced limp and the Jets offense didn’t sniff the red zone once.

Here are the best and worst players from the Jets’ sluggish and embarrassing Week 13 loss.

Dud: The Offensive Line

(David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports)

Pass protection has been an issue all season for the Jets, but it reared its ugly head in the 22-6 loss.

The Jets offensive line was guilty of six holds and several back-breaking penalties. The Jets offense had no chance with the Bengals defensive front wreaking havoc on the backfield on every play.

Offensive line play has been key to the Jets’ success all season, so it didn’t help that Kelvin Beachum and Tom Compton were penalty machines while Brandon Shell was a turnstile.
