Jeremiah Martin recalled from Long Island with Garrett Temple out

The Brooklyn Nets will have both of their two-way players with them for Friday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs.

The Brooklyn Nets have officially ruled Garrett Temple out for Friday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs. He has a left ankle sprain.

With Temple being ruled out, the Nets have recalled a player from the Long Island Nets, Brooklyn’s G League affiliate. Rather than recall Nets rookie Nic Claxton or Dzanan Musa, Brooklyn recalled Jeremiah Martin — who, like Claxton and Musa, was previously ruled out against the Spurs with Long Island set to face the Lakeland Magic, Orlando’s G League team.

Martin is averaging 17.7 points per game for Long Island while playing 30.4 minutes per game this season. He’s also averaging 1.8 steals and 4.8 assists per game.

Martin has appeared in two games for Brooklyn, both of which were in January. The two-way player’s appearance against the Chicago Bulls on January 31 was his NBA debut. Martin then scored his first NBA points in Brooklyn’s game against the Golden State Warriors on February 5.

Garrett Temple doubtful vs. Spurs

The Brooklyn Nets have three players on assignment with the Long Island Nets, two others out and one more who could be sidelined Friday.

The Brooklyn Nets will likely be without Garrett Temple again on Friday, given his recent status update.

The wing missed the Nets’ loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday due to a left ankle sprain. He has been ruled doubtful for Friday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs for the same reason.

Kevin Durant (right Achilles rehab) and Kyrie Irving (right shoulder surgery) are the only other players included on the Nets’ status report due to injury. Both at out.

Nic Claxton, Dzanan Musa and two-way player Jeremiah Martin are all unavailable for the Nets. They are all on assignment with Brooklyn’s G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets. They host the Lakeland Magic, the Orlando Magic’s G League affiliate, on Friday at 7 p.m. The game will be available to watch on NBAGLeague.com.

In Long Island’s last game, which was a 124-108 win over the Delaware Blue Coats, the Philadelphia 76ers’ G League affiliate, Claxton scored 34 points on 10-for-16 shooting (3-for-6 from deep). Dzanan Musa scored 20 on 5-for-14 shooting (2-for-5 from three) in the win.

Nets to be extremely shorthanded vs. 76ers on Thursday

Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving is just one of the many players who won’t suit up for Thursday’s contest against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Per the Brooklyn Nets PR, several Nets players will be unable to take the floor against the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday.

Point guard Kyrie Irving, who has been diagnosed with a significant shoulder injury, headlines the list. Joining him will be two-time Finals MVP Kevin Durant, who has already said he won’t be playing during the 2019-20 season.

In addition, big man Nic Claxton, forward Dzanan Musa and point guard Jeremiah Martin will also be absent for Nets’ first game since the All-Star Break, with all having been assigned to the NBA G League with the Long Island Nets, Brooklyn’s G League affiliate.

For Irving, it will be the 27th game of the season that he’s missed with a right shoulder impingement. On Tuesday, it was reported that Irving would see a specialist this week after re-aggravating an injury that’s long been causing him pain.

Durant, as previously mentioned, has yet to suit up for the 2019-20 season. However, recent videos have shown Durant getting shots up and looking much like the long-range assassin he’s been known to be throughout his career. Though he’s ruled himself out for the remainder of the season, the video is still encouraging for his long-term future with the Nets, as it appears that he’ll be in prime form when the 2020-21 season rolls around.

Nets sign Jeremiah Martin to two-way deal

The Nets have signed Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot to a two-way deal, which provides another player the chance to play for Brooklyn.

Following Wednesday night’s loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, Justin Anderson was released by the Brooklyn Nets as a result of his 10-day contract expiring. The roster spot was first made available as a result of David Nwaba’s torn Achilles and season-ending surgery.

Brooklyn then signed Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot to a 10-day contract to fill the final spot on the roster. This then opened up a two-way slot for a new player.

The Nets decided Jeremiah Martin was the player they wanted to sign to a two-way deal.

Martin was previously with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Miami Heat’s G League affiliate. He played in 21 games for the Skyforce this season and averaged 18.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

Martin is in his rookie season, having finished up at the University of Memphis after 2018-19.

Rookie players are taking over the NBA G League in 2019-20

Among the top scorers in the G League this season, five players in the top 10 are first-year players.

As the NBA G League approaches the one-month mark of the season, several players have performed well and are off to great starts with many of those outings coming from the 2019 NBA Draft class.

Among the top scorers in the G League, five players in the top 10 are rookies and two first-year players, Kyle Guy and Marial Shayok, hold the top individual scoring performances of the season with 42 points each.

With most players having suited up in around 8-10 games, Rookie Wire took a look at those rookies that are making an impact with their respective clubs this season.

Jeremiah Martin, Sioux Falls Skyforce

The former Memphis forward is currently second in total scoring (242) this season and leads all rookies to this point. Martin is averaging 22 points, 6.2 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 11 games for the Skyforce.

Martin has shown no problems transitioning to the G League as he has seven games scoring at least 20 points, including three 30-plus games. He is converting on 52.8% of his shots, including 33.3% from 3-point range.

NBA teams previously had a wealth of free-agent talent available in the G League player pool but the addition of two-way contracts has made a dent in the number of available players to sign.

Martin could be one of those players to target this season.
