Scoping out JD Davison’s growth ahead of his return to Las Vegas Summer League

His athleticism, quickness, and connection with his teammates led to impressive performances in Portland.

JD Davison is a promising prospect who was selected by the Boston Celtics in the second round of last year’s draft and will suit up for the 2023 Las Vegas Summer League with the Sin City Celtics after a season mostly playing for Boston’s G League affiliate in Maine last season.

In the G League, Davison showcased his skills, averaging 12.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and an impressive 8.7 assists per game. His athleticism, quickness and connection with his teammates led to impressive performances in Portland. However, Davison still has areas to improve, particularly his 3-point shooting.

If you have not kept up with his growth as a player via his play in Maine, the hosts of the “How ‘Bout Them Celtics!” podcast did the work for you, watching the best of his play last season and reacting live to his development as a player.

Check out the clip embedded above to hear what they had to say about Davison’s potential in Las Vegas and beyond.

Breaking down the Boston Celtics’ roster for Las Vegas Summer League

Few if any of these players will make the Celtics’ regular roster, but there is a chance for several to make one of the team’s three two way slots for the 2023-24 season.

While there might be a few more additions to the Boston Celtics roster for the NBA’s 2023 Las Vegas Summer League, for all intents and purposes we have a pretty good idea of who will be the Sin City Celtics this offseason.

The Summer Celtics includes Alexander Balcerowski, Kamar Baldwin, Justin Bean, Justin Champagnie, JD Davison, Eugene German, Sam Griesel, Reggie Kissoonlal, Mychael Mulder, Jay Scrubb, Vincent Valerio-Bodon, and Jordan Walsh. As is the case with the league’s annual summer exhibition series, few if any of these players will make the Celtics’ regular roster, but there is a chance for several to make one of the team’s three two way slots for the 2023-24 season.

To learn more about each and their odds of donning green and white next season, check out the clip embedded below from the folks at the “How ‘Bout Them Celtics?” podcast.

Nate Oats, Alabama are quickly becoming an NBA pipeline

Nate Oats is quickly turning the Alabama men’s basketball program into a pipeline to the NBA!

From 2000 through 2018, the Alabama men’s basketball program produced just six total NBA draft picks. In 2019, athletic director Greg Byrne announced the hiring of Buffalo head coach [autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] and the Tide turned (pun intended).

Since Oats’ arrival in Tuscaloosa, the Crimson Tide have had six players drafted, four of which have been first-round picks.

Before Brandon Miller and Noah Clowney were selected in the 2023 NBA draft on Thursday night, Kira Lewis, Josh Primo, Herb Jones, and J.D. Davison were all draft picks under the tutelage of Oats.

It’s starting to make sense as to why the Tide has been so successful on the hardwood over the past few seasons, elite talent and development have paved the way to Alabama becoming one of the premier programs in college basketball under the leadership of Nate Oats. And it doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

Every Alabama basketball player to be selected in the NBA draft since 2000

Every Alabama basketball player to be selected in the NBA draft since 2000!

The Alabama men’s basketball program may not be the NBA pipeline like Duke or Kansas, but the Tide has produced its fair share of talent to the league over the years.

As we countdown to the hours until the start of the 2023 NBA draft, we continue to take a deep dive into what to expect from this year’s draft and also reflect on what Alabama has done in previous drafts.

Brandon Miller and Noah Clowney will both likely be selected in the first round on Thursday night adding to Alabama’s NBA draft pedigree.

While we await NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver to open up the 2023 NBA draft, let’s take a look back at every Alabama player to be selected in the NBA since 2000.

Best of Boston’s JD Davison with the Maine Celtics in 2022-23

Davison had himself a solid first season as a two way player, exceeding limited expectations set for the raw prospect.

While fans of the Boston Celtics likely hoped to see the former Alabama player on the court with the parent club more than they did in 2022-23, the Celtics’ second-round pick in the 2022 NBA draft, JD Davison, still logged plenty of time playing in Portland with the Maine Celtics, Boston’s affiliate in the G League.

Davison had a solid first season as a two-way player, exceeding limited expectations set for the raw prospect. The Alabama native averaged 13.5 points per game on 49.8% field goal percentage and a work-in-progress 29.9% from 3 to go, He averaged 4.6 rebounds per game (quite a few for a floor general) and 7.7 assists per game in 45 G League contests.

JD Davison considered the Boston Celtics best G League prospect

Davison is Boston’s best G League prospect as related in a recent survey of such players around the NBA.

The Boston Celtics are among teams in the NBA that have leaned harder on their G League affiliate to find homegrown talent able to help the parent club. So it did not turn heads when the Celtics elected to take guard JD Davison with the 53rd overall selection in the 2022 NBA draft with the intention of having him develop with the (Portland) Maine Celtics.

In a report from Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman, Davison was named Boston’s best G League prospect in a recent survey of such players around the NBA. According to the B/R analyst, the former Alabama standout fell out of lottery range and to the Celtics because of “poor shooting and decision-making.”

“Both weaknesses have been evident in the G League, but they’re also improvable, while his athleticism and playmaking aren’t as teachable,” he explains, likely invoking Boston’s thinking on the matter to begin with.

“Averaging 12 assists over his last five games with the Maine Celtics, Davison should be interesting … for his ability to set up teammates,” suggests Wasserman. “He should also offer enough open-floor finishing and some more in ball-screen situations, but the scoring will mostly be a bonus.”

“He’ll have a chance to carve out an NBA role by raising his shooting-threat level a notch and cutting down on unforced turnovers.”

Celtics two way point guard JD Davison gets 17 points, 7 assists vs. Westchester Knicks

The Alabama native arguably had his best game yet as a Celtic recently in G League play.

We have yet to see JD Davison — the Boston Celtics’ sole pick from the 2022 NBA draft — play a minute with the parent club. Still, the Alabama alumnus has been getting plenty of run up Interstate 95 in Portland with the Maine Celtics and has been looking promising in the floor time he has had with the Celtics’ G League outfit.

Davison most recently had an outstanding tilt against the Westchester Knicks (the G League affiliate of the New York ball club of the same name) that saw the Celtics two way floor general put up an impressive 17 points and 7 assists in 32 minutes of floor time.

Davison shot an efficient10-of-17 from the field, 1-of-4 from 3-point range, and a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in one of his strongest games yet as part of the Celtics organization.

To see his full game highlights from the contest in question, check out the clip embedded below courtesy of the YouTube channel of Tomasz Kordylewski.

Boston rookie JD Davison on Marcus Smart, Jayson Tatum mentoring him

Smart and Tatum have evidently been helping the Alabama guard with his transition to the NBA.

It was a bit of a surprise for many Boston Celtics fans when the team elected to roll the dice on an unproven prospect out of Alabama who flashed some seriously high-level potential amid an absolute mess of a debut season with the Crimson Tide.

But trusting in their ability to help that prospect — JD Davison — find his footing at the NBA level, Boston selected the Alabama floor general with its only pick in the 2022 NBA draft. Wowing fans with his summer league play soon after, it seems probable the Celtics made the right call. Veteran players Marcus Smart and Jayson Tatum have been excellent mentors to Davison per the man himself.

Watch the video embedded above to hear him talk about his time with Boston so far, and what that duo has been helping Davison with as he adjusts to the NBA game courtesy of our friends at CLNS Media.
