Impressions from the season kickoff between Texas and ULM

Looking at where the Longhorns can improve after a strong opening win.

In front of an emotionally charged crowd, Texas defeated the ULM Warhawks, 52-10. The game had multiple positives to build on as the season progresses.

The pass rush is perhaps the biggest positive takeaway from Saturday’s game. Barryn Sorrell proved capable and disruptive on the night and could be in store for a big year.

Justice Finkley and Jaylon Guilbeau played like starters. In my estimation, Texas appears to be a more imposing and deeper defense than in years past, but certainly looked more technically sound.

Excellent pursuit from the defense became a consistent theme on the night. The Texas defense consistently swarmed to the football. Multiple defenders surrounded ball carriers on outside runs, making life difficult on ULM running backs.

Albeit, the game did unearth a couple of deficiencies on both sides of the football.

On the defensive side, edges allowed outside runs failing to set the edge.

On offense, Quinn Ewers made some great plays but the deep ball did not connect. Nevertheless, after an early interception Ewers settled in and played well overall.

The team is a work in progress, but the defense appears to be improved from last season. We will see if that trend continues after this week.

Horns Up: Seven Texas players trending up after Saturday’s game

Texas is back in the win column after Saturday’s win.

Texas started its 2022 season with a 52-10 win over the ULM Warhawks. Despite some sloppiness and struggles in different phases, the Longhorns provided a solid performance overall.

Several Texas players emerged as game changers Saturday. Barryn Sorrell had perhaps the biggest impact, accounting for two sacks. If you were wondering where Texas would get its pass rush this year, Sorrell’s two-sack performance may have given you your answer.

Keondre Coburn also had a good night, earning a sack of his own. The defensive line was noticeably more disruptive and explosive which could pay dividends this year.

Several freshman made an immediate contribution on Saturday also. Cole Hutson frequently unlocked early runs for Bijan Robinson by sealing off defenders. Justice Finkley had a good play early, both setting the edge and making an impressive tackle. Kelvin Banks certainly looked like he belonged, while Jaylon Guilbeau looked like a seasoned veteran.

Steve Sarkisian did a solid job involving multiple players offensively. Casey Cain featured his explosiveness, but the biggest news among skill players was the arrival of Ja’Tavion Sanders. Sanders’ performance led all receivers and could be the beginning of a special connection with Quinn Ewers.

Here’s a look at Texas players’ whose stock is rising following Saturday’s game.

WATCH: Longhorns are going hard during offseason lifts

Texas’ workouts are ramping up ahead of the 2022 season.

Texas is looking to redeem themselves after the horrendous year they had in 2021.

The team will be full of new faces as the Longhorns welcomed over 30 new scholarship players to a team that went 5-7 in 2021, but seemed to have the foundation of a squad capable of much more.

Players like Bijan Robinson and Xavier Worthy shined brightly on a team that struggled throughout the season. The staff is now ensuring that everyone is bought into the culture and what they are expecting from them. The offseason workouts provide players new and old a chance to stand out ahead of the spring.

Strength and conditioning coach Torre Becton is making sure all the players are reaching their maximum potential, especially freshman Justice Finkley who decided to enroll early.

Other freshmen or even cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau are expected to push for starting roles, or at the very worst contribute as a rotational player. Texas will likely have a slew of youngsters contending for major roles, and the ones getting a head start as early enrollees are in a prime situation to do so.

Two Texas signees listed as top performers at All-American Bowl practice

Jaylon Guilbeau and J’Mond Tapp are standing out at the All-American Bowl this week.

The two future Longhorns that are partaking in the All-American Bowl have been doing nothing but making plays the last couple days.

Four-star cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau and four-star defensive lineman J’Mond Tapp have been included in On3’s list of players that were standouts on the second day of practice.

This comes as no surprise as videos surfaced of Tapp getting to the quarterback frequently, while also filling in during some defensive back drills due to a shortage at the position. Guilbeau has been no slouch either, as he has been locking down receivers and even picked off former Texas target Devin Brown, who is now slated to attend Ohio State.

The two were both among the West’s top players which can be seen on the second slide of the post below.

While Guilbeau and Tapp are currently the only Longhorns signees at the event, there are a couple recruits in Earnest Greene and Larry Turner-Gooden that will be deciding during the game on Jan. 8 and Texas is among each of their top schools.

Steve Sarkisian and his staff would likely love to add both of them in order to strengthen the already deep No. 5 class in the nation.

Four Longhorns signees and targets at the 2022 All-American bowl

Two Texas signees and two remaining targets are in San Antonio for the 2022 All-American bowl. Here’s the team and jersey number they’ll each be sporting!

After having six signees selected to the Under Armour All-America game, Texas will have a few more participating in the All-American bowl in San Antonio this week.

Similar to the Under Armour event, the All-American bowl gives top ranked high school players a chance to team up and face off against other top talent from across the nation. Players like Vince Young, Trevor Lawrence, and Reggie Bush among many other college and NFL stars have participated in this particular event.

The Longhorns will have two signees participating this year, as both four-star defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau and four-star defensive end J’Mond Tapp will be representing Texas.

There are also a couple potential additions to the 2022 class participating in the event, who could very well boost Texas’ class that ranks as the No. 5 in the nation.

Four-star offensive lineman Earnest Greene and safety Larry Turner-Gooden will both be announcing their decision during the game and Texas is among the finalists for both players.

The game takes place on Jan. 8 and will be televised on NBC. Here are what respective team (East/West) and number each of the four players mentioned will be sporting.

Texas Football: List of early enrollees for the 2022 class

As of now, 11 players from the 2022 class will enroll early.

Each year that passes, more and more recruits choose to take part in the early signing period rather than wait until national signing day in February. Continue reading “Texas Football: List of early enrollees for the 2022 class”

Four-star defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau recommits to Texas, flips from TCU

Jaylon Gilbeau, a former verbal Texas commit who switched to TCU, has flipped back to the Longhorns.

A decommitment doesn’t always mean that a player has no more interest in attending said school. Four-star defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau showed just that with his recommitment to the Texas Longhorns on Thanksgiving day.

Guilbeau originally offered a verbal commitment to the Longhorns in February 2020. Then, in July 2021, he decommitted and flipped to TCU. After the Horned Frogs and longtime head coach Gary Patterson “mutually agreed to part ways” on Oct. 31, Guilbeau ventured out in his recruitment once again and settled in the place it all began: Texas.

On Thursday, the 6-foot, 175-pound athlete tweeted a graphic giving the “horns up” and saying he has, once again, committed to the Longhorns football program. He is seemingly there to stay.

Gilbeau, a star at Memorial High School (Port Arthur, Texas), is ranked as the No. 20 cornerback in the class of 2022 by the 247Sports Composite. According to the recruiting site, he had offers from 25 schools, including Alabama, Georgia, LSU, and Michigan.

He chose Texas, becoming the 22nd commit to the school (after initially being one of the first verbals). The program does not yet have any five-stars in the class, but with 15 four-star players, it is ranked the best in the Big 12 and No. 7 overall in the nation.

The defensive side of the ball is particularly strong in this class, with five of Texas’ seven top-ranked commits on that side of the ball.
