Oregon battling Miami Hurricanes for 5-star DL Jayden Wayne in latest projections

A recruiting rivalry is bubbling up between Dan Lanning and Mario Cristobal. The eventual commitment from 5-star DL Jayden Wayne will further add to that.

[jwplayer rQepXc2I]

In the sense of rivalries, the Oregon Ducks don’t have many outside of the Pac-12. While we know about the bad blood with Washington, Oregon State, and even USC, outside of conference play it’s hard to pinpoint a school that could be labeled as a rival to the Ducks other than maybe the Ohio State Buckeyes, or perhaps the Boise State Broncos, just due to past history.

However, a new rivalry may be bubbling to the surface, at least from a recruiting standpoint. Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes are stepping up to the plate and taking on the Ducks head-on.

After leaving Oregon last December, Cristobal went up against the Ducks in a few recruiting battles, notably losing 4-star OL Dave Iuli to Dan Lanning after the Washington product flipped to Oregon late in the process.

Now, another highly-rated Washington recruit — 5-star DL Jayden Wayne — is up for grabs, and it’s the Ducks and Hurricanes who currently lead the way in his recruitment, according to On3’s predictions.

According to 247Sports, Wayne, who plays at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, is listed as the No. 4 DL in the 2023 class, and No. 30 player overall. Standing at 6-foot-5, 245 pounds, Wayne would be a massive addition to the Ducks’ defensive line and act as a centerpiece to Oregon’s 2023 recruiting class, should he choose the Ducks.

As you can see, the Ducks currently hold a slight advantage in his recruiting, according to On3, with a 27.7% chance to land him. Miami is right behind them, with a 27.2% chance. We will see how his recruitment continues in the coming months, but Wayne is definitely someone to keep an eye on, as both teams will be fighting hard for him down the stretch.

After losing Iuli late to the Ducks, you can guarantee that Cristobal wants a little bit of revenge. We’ll just have to see what Lanning has to say about that.

Georgia football among top schools for 5-star DE

The Georgia Bulldogs are among the top schools for five-star class of 2023 edge rusher Jayden Wayne.

The Georgia Bulldogs are among the top schools for five-star class of 2023 edge rusher Jayden Wayne. Wayne plays high school football for Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington.

He’s ranked as Washington’s top recruit in the class of 2023. Wayne is the No. 31 recruit in his class. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound defensive end excels on the field and in the classroom.

The Lincoln star plays basketball in addition to football. Among the prospect’s visits so far are Georgia, Miami and Oregon.

Wayne named his top 11 schools via Twitter:

Wayne ranks Georgia, Auburn, Michigan State, Texas, USC, Washington, Alabama, Miami, Florida, LSU and Oregon as his top schools. Wayne’s recruitment remains open.

Five-star defender Jayden Wayne has LSU among top schools

The LSU Tigers are among the top schools for the No. 10 rated player in the 2023 class, according to Rivals’ rankings.

Jayden Wayne of Tacoma has released his top schools for his recruitment. While the Tigers were among the list you can find the usual suspects in the SEC as well. Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, and future SEC team Texas were all present on his list as well.

Currently, Wayne ranks as the No. 1 player in the state of Washington and a top-three player at his position. He is listed as a defensive lineman but based on his size, Wayne might project best as a strong-side defensive end for LSU. Unless he adds some weight to his frame, playing on the interior defensive line wouldn’t be productive for him.

LSU is in a good spot with several defensive linemen and they can thank new defensive line coach Jamar Cain. His reputation of developing NFL talent speaks for itself. Wayne is also looking at his home state team, the Washington Huskies. They are joined by Oregon and USC of the Pac-12 on the list.

While it is early in the process, Brian Kelly has to like where they stand with one of the nation’s best defenders. No update has been given at this time for any visits or when he will cut down his list any further.

2023 5-star DL Jayden Wayne includes Oregon in top recruiting destinations

One of the best defensive lineman in the 2023 class, 5-star Jayden Wayne, has his eyes on the Ducks as he narrows his choices.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01f27mq9z7hjgk6vc6 player_id=none image=https://duckswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

There is still a lot of time left before 2023 DL Jayden Wayne announces where he will be playing his college football, but the Oregon Ducks made the cut when the 5-star cut his destinations list down to 11 schools on Wednesday.

Wayne, who is ranked as the No. 5 DL in the 2023 class, and the No. 31 player overall, released a list of his final 11 schools, including Oregon along with Georgia, Auburn, Michigan State, Texas, USC, Washington, Alabama, Miami, Florida, and LSU.

That may seem like an extensive list, but as one of the top players in next year’s recruiting class starts to narrow down his focus to a few schools and continue his decision-making process, it’s always good to know that Dan Lanning and the Ducks are in the mix.

Michigan State football makes 5-star DE Jayden Wayne’s top schools list

MSU is firmly in the thick of things regarding a 5-star DE’s recruitment.

Mel Tucker has been traveling around the recruiting trail nonstop since the calendar turned to 2022, constantly visiting high schools across the country. Earlier this week, Tucker was in Tacoma, Washington, visiting Lincoln High School. Lincoln is the home of 5-star defensive end Jayden Wayne, who came away with an offer, as well as very impressed with Michigan State and Mel Tucker.

The impressions that Tucker and his staff have left the 5-star has led to their inclusion as Wayne has narrowed his top schools list down to eleven.

Michigan State is included alongside Georgia, Auburn, Texas, USC, Washington, Alabama, Miami, Florida, LSU and Oregon.

Wayne currently ranks as the No. 31 overall recruit and No. 5 defensive lineman according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Wayne was set to start training privately with MSU’s new pass rush specialist Brandon Jordan, before he was hired by Michigan State.

Jordan’s prowess along with the relationship Tucker and Wayne are developing should put the Spartans firmly in the mix in this 5-star’s recruitment.

2023 5-star DL Jayden Wayne takes trip to Eugene for recruiting visit

5-star DL Jayden Wayne took a recruiting trip to Eugene on Saturday to check out Dan Lanning and the Ducks.

[jwplayer jiMvlrVJ]

Some pretty impressive names have come through the Eugene area on recruiting trips this weekend, but there may be none bigger than the man who arrived on Saturday night.

With a simple post on Twitter, five-star defensive lineman Jayden Wayne announced his arrival in Eugene for a recruiting visit.

Wayne is No. 5 among defensive linemen in the nation and No. 31 overall in the 2023 recruiting class. A native of Tacoma, Wayne is the No. 1 player in the state of Washington.

[lawrence-related id=16492]

At the moment, the 6-foot-5, 245 pound DL is weighing offers from the best schools in the nation, including Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Miami, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame and Oklahoma.

According to the 247Sports crystal balls, Wayne is expected to commit to Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes, but a lot can happen before Wayne announces his commitment

Could Dan Lanning and the Ducks make a serious push? It seems possible, depending how the visit to Autzen Stadium and the Oregon campus went.

Pair of 5-star recruits set to visit Eugene for Oregon’s game vs. Washington State

The Oregon Ducks will be hosting some massive recruits against Washington State this week, with a pair of 5-stars coming to Eugene.

It’s not often that the Oregon Ducks have a game inside Autzen Stadium, and Nike co-founder Phil Knight isn’t regarded as the most important person on the sidelines.

That may be a bit of an overstatement, but you could argue that a pair of recruits visiting Oregon’s game against the Washington State Cougars on Saturday night will carry some massive weight, and the program will likely be doing anything they can to make sure they have everything they need.

Both 5-star WR Kevin Coleman and 5-star DL Jayden Wayne announced that they are set to visit Eugene this weekend for the game against the Cougars.

Coleman is ranked as the No. 3 WR prospect in the nation, and he recently called Oregon his “dream school.” Adding Coleman to the 2022 recruiting class would be massive for the Ducks, especially after two blue-chip receivers in Isaiah Sategna and Nicholas Anderson recently flipped their commitments.

[lawrence-related id=11954]

Wayne is rated as the No. 29 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to 247 Sports. Standing at 6-foot-5, 245 pounds, Wayne would be a huge addition to Oregon’s defensive line in the future, and undoubtedly be one of their biggest “gets” on the recruiting trail for the 2023 class.

After a successful road trip to Seattle a week ago, the Ducks have a lot of momentum as they continue on their path towards the College Football Playoff. Earlier in the week, Mario Cristobal remarked that based on games over the past few years, it is Washington State that may stand as Oregon’s biggest rivals in the conference.

We’ll see if they can show up like they did against the Huskies for this one and put on a show for some of the top recruits in the nation.

Offer would put Tigers among ‘top choices’ for 5-star DL

A five-star defensive lineman from the West Coast visited Clemson this summer to compete at the Dabo Swinney Camp and is looking to return to campus in the fall.

Tacoma (Wash.) Lincoln High School’s Jayden Wayne told The Clemson Insider he “most definitely” wants to make it back to Tiger Town for a game during the upcoming season.

Aside from experiencing the atmosphere at Death Valley, there are a couple of things the 6-foot-5, 245-pound junior in the 2023 class is hoping to get out of his next visit to Clemson.

“An offer and a chance to sit down with Coach Dabo,” Wayne said.

Although Swinney’s program has not yet joined Wayne’s list of more than 30 scholarship offers, the elite pass rusher has been in touch with Clemson assistant coach Todd Bates since his camp visit and expects to hear more from the Tigers when Sept. 1 rolls around and college coaches can begin directly contacting junior prospects.

Bates has let Wayne know that Clemson does things differently in recruiting and wants him to keep building the relationship while staying patient for a potential offer from the Tigers.

If the offer eventually comes, it would certainly be big for Wayne.

“It would mean a lot!” he said. “I’ve liked Clemson for a while. It would definitely put them in my top choices.”

“I enjoyed working with the current players a lot,” he added.

Redshirt junior defensive end K.J. Henry and sophomore defensive end Myles Murphy are a couple of the players Wayne worked with and learned from at the Swinney Camp.

“They taught me a lot during the camp,” he said.

When Wayne looks at Clemson, there is plenty that stands out and appeals to him about the school and football program.

“The players really like it there,” he said. “The family atmosphere. The campus. The coaches all played there and are close. They compete for the national championship every year.”

Along with Clemson, Wayne said he wants to visit Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Miami and Oklahoma during the season. With the exception of Clemson, all of those schools have offered Wayne, who also owns offers from Auburn, LSU, Texas A&M, Texas, Miami, Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame, Oregon and Southern Cal among others.

Wayne is rated as a five-star by the 247Sports Composite, which tabs him as the No. 1 prospect in the state of Washington, No. 7 defensive lineman nationally and No. 29 overall prospect for the 2023 class.

5-star staying in touch with Clemson, ‘would love’ return visit

Clemson continues to stay in touch with a five-star defensive lineman from the West Coast that was on campus last month.

Tacoma (Wash.) Lincoln High School’s Jayden Wayne, one of the country’s top prospects in the class of 2023, camped at Clemson on June 5 and remains in regular contact with Tigers assistant coach Todd Bates.

“I talk to Coach Bates every week,” Wayne said.

What is Bates’ message to the 6-foot-5, 245-pound pass rusher?

“Don’t doubt myself,” Wayne said. “They want to offer me, but they do things different. Keep building the relationship.”

Although he doesn’t yet have an offer from the Tigers, Wayne is high on the program and said he “would love to” return to Clemson for a game this coming season so he can see Death Valley and sit down with Dabo Swinney.

“Looks pretty hype. Coming down the hill!” he said of his thoughts on Clemson’s game-day atmosphere from what he’s seen on TV.

Added Wayne regarding his impressions of Swinney: “He’s a chill coach. A family guy. Treats his players like family.”

Wayne’s list of over 30 total offers features schools such as Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Texas A&M.

Looking ahead, as it stands now, Wayne has a timeframe in mind for when he wants to narrow down his list and make his commitment decision.

“Sometime after my season next year,” he said.

If Clemson throws its hat in the ring with an offer before then, the Tigers would stack up well with the other contenders in his recruitment.

“Definitely somewhere at the top,” he said.

Wayne is ranked as high as the No. 13 overall prospect in the 2023 class regardless of position by Rivals, while 247Sports bills him as the No. 5 defensive lineman nationally in the class.
