‘They’ve got to earn it;’ Dante Dowdell and Jayden Limar quickly getting up to speed at Oregon

“They understand that it takes more than just getting the ball and running in college. This ain’t high school.”

There is no shortage of running back talent in Eugene, Oregon during the spring of 2023.

After a stellar season in 2022, the Ducks bring back both Bucky Irving and Noah Whittington, who combined for just under 2,000 yards in their first year with the program. On top of that, sophomore Jordan James is expecting a bigger role in the offense after serving as the go-to short-yardage rusher a year ago, and the Ducks also bring in two highly-rated 4-star RBs from the 2022 recruiting class — Dante Dowdell and Jayden Limar.

When you come to college as a top-20 RB in your class — Dowdell was rated No. 6 in 2022, Limar No. 18 — there may be an expectation that you can get on the field as a true freshman and display some of the high ceiling that you bring. When you come to as stacked of a room as there is in Eugene, though. you’ve got some work to do in order to prove that you deserve the carries.

“Dante and Jayden, they have come along pretty well,” RB coach Carlos Locklyn said. “You’re gonna earn it in my room, and that’s it. You’re gonna earn it and they’re starting to get that, both of them.”

Earning a spot on the field may be more complicated than just running hard. While both backs had immense success at the high school level, any player will tell you that the college game moves quicker, and it takes more processing mentally in order the be an elite player.

“They understand that it takes more than just getting the ball and running in college. This ain’t high school,” Locklyn said. “I say it to them all the time; this ain’t high school. This is college. It’s like starting all the way back over again.”

Despite the necessary jump in football IQ that is needed and the massive increase in game speed and player size, both Dowdell and Limar are coming along nicely so far in their first spring camp at the college level. While there have been limited opportunities for ‘to the ground’ tackling and contact beyond thudding pads, the two freshmen have had their names brought up multiple times after practices and scrimmages.

[lawrence-related id=41706]

On Saturday, head coach Dan Lanning revealed that Limar was among the players to get into the endzone via a pass from Ty Thompson. A week ago, Lanning also remarked that Dowdell really impressed him once it got to the point where RBs weren’t considered down on first contact, and he could display some of his physicality and tackle-breaking ability.

On top of all the physical traits, it appears that both players are starting to pick things up in the meeting room, as well, working hard to grow off of the field.

“They’re picking up everything well, they run it hard, but the biggest thing is they’re great listeners,” Locklyn said. “They listen to all the guys, they’re taking their coaching and they’re doing a really good job in that. But I’ve seen growth with them learning the playbook, learning their plays, understanding what it is to be a running back.”

With the loaded RB room stacked with talent at the top, there is no saying whether or not Dowdell or Limar will be able to carve out a meaningful role in 2023. But looking toward the future, it’s clear that the Ducks have a pair of backs in the waiting, primed and ready for a breakout when their opportunity arises.

Carlos Locklyn talks Bucky Irving, Will Stein’s offense, and Ducks’ immense RB depth

“We’ve got two of probably the top five backs in the Pac-12 here at Oregon.” Carlos Locklyn is nothing short of confident heading into 2023.

The running back position at the University of Oregon carries a lot of weight and history. Going back through the decades, swathes of legendary players have come through the program, and they’ve been coached by some of the most legendary coaches.

There is a standard of greatness, and since taking over as the new RB coach last season, Carlos Locklyn has done everything in his power to uphold that standard.

He’s doing a pretty good job, if you were to ask anyone of their opinion.

Last year with Bucky Irving and Noah Whittington leading the way, Oregon’s rushing attack saw a nice boost, and that is expected to continue this year with those two starters returning, as well as the expected elevation of Jordan James. On top of that the Ducks signed a pair of highly-rated true freshmen in Dante Dowdell and Jayden Limar, both of whom could contribute early in their careers.

On Thursday, we got a chance to talk to Locklyn for the first time this spring and broke down Oregon’s RB room. Here are some of the best quotes from that interview.

Meet Notre Dame’s Now Complete 2023 Recruiting Class

Meet Notre Dame’s 26 current commitments in what is a top-five class nationally.

After a whirlwind couple of years the 2023 recruiting class has officially been completed at Notre Dame.  What started out tremendously hit a few snags along the way.  It closed with one of the strangest signing day stories you’ll ever see when Peyton Bowen bailed on Notre Dame for Oregon, only to change his mind and bail on Oregon for Oklahoma just a day later.

In all, Notre Dame wound up with 24 signed commitments after the second signing period in February.  It didn’t finish in the top couple of spots nationally like we had hoped after it’s tremendous start but will continue to add to the overall talent for Notre Dame.

Here are the 24 newest members of the Notre Dame football team:

Ducks well represented among 2023 Gatorade Players of the Year

The Gatorade Players of the Year were announced for all 50 states on Friday, and the Ducks were well represented.

There are many ways to determine who the best recruits in high school sports are each year, but one of the best ways that have come about over the past few decades is to look at who was named the Gatorade Player of the Year.

Gatorade highlights dozens of spectacular athletes across all sports, and they award the top player from each state year after year. While this isn’t a perfect way to determine who the top 50 players in the nation are, since there are often multiple deserving players in each state, it goes to show who the most talented player in all 50 states is.

In the world of football, the 50 winners were announced on Friday, January 6, and it turns out that the Oregon Ducks are well represented. We wanted to celebrate those players for their achievements and look at a couple of other players — one potential future Duck, and another former Duck — that made the cut as well.

Signing Day Superlatives: Which Notre Dame commits will have major impacts

This Irish class is loaded with talent

It wasn’t how [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] envisioned his first full recruiting class to end as the loss of [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] and [autotag]Jayden Limar[/autotag] to Oregon put a bit of a damper on what should be viewed as a very impressive initial group.

The 2023 recruiting cycle will always be remembers as Freeman’s first, a collection of 24 players who can make a very big impact in the future for the program. There will be more than a few stars from this class and since they are now officially member of the [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] program, we can not dream of what they will accomplish on the field.

Here is my best guess as which players will have major contributions for the Irish in the years to come.

Oregon flips second Notre Dame commit during early signing period

These quacks are annoying

The Irish are dealing with another loss to the same team in the 2023 early signing period. First, it was safety [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag], who didn’t appear to be favoring the Ducks, ultimately picking them over [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag], [autotag]Texas A&M[/autotag] and [autotag]Oklahoma[/autotag].

Now running back [autotag]Jayden Limar[/autotag] is joining Bowen in flipping from Notre Dame and signing with [autotag]Oregon[/autotag]. This one doesn’t hurt quite as much, as many of us actually expected Limar to do this.

Don’t get me wrong, it still hurts, but the Irish also signed [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] and [autotag]Brandyn Hillman[/autotag] who was recruited as an athlete and could play the position as well.

It hasn’t been the exact finish that [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and the Irish wanted but they are still signing a group of prospects that many teams across the country would have loved to sign.

Ducks flip 4-star RB Jayden Limar from Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Massive recruiting win for Carlos Locklyn and the Ducks, flipping 4-star RB Jayden Limar from Notre Dame.

The Oregon Ducks scored another massive win in the recruiting world on Wednesday, landing a verbal commitment from 4-star running back Jayden Limar, who was previously committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish since May of 2022.

Limar is rated as the No. 3 player in the state of Washington, and is viewed by 247Sports as the No. 16 RB in the 2023 class. He has been on multiple visits to Eugene over the past couple of years and has developed a close relationship with both Dan Lanning and Oregon RB coach Carlos Locklyn.

This recruiting flip does not come as a major surprise, with On3’s Justin Hopkins logging a prediction for it to happen earlier this month.

Limar is now the second RB in Oregon’s 2023 recruiting class, joining 4-star RB Dante Dowdell, who is rated as the No. 6 RB in the class.

Oregon trending to flip 2023 Notre Dame running back commitment

Not the best way to start out week Irish fans

Last week we saw rumors that [autotag]Oregon[/autotag] was trying to flip current Irish commit [autotag]Jayden Limar[/autotag]. Well, as the saying goes, where there’s smoke, there’s a fire.

Just this morning the 247Sports crystal balls came rolling in for the Ducks to flip. It came from all over their experts, from national, Steve Wiltfong, to their Notre Dame reporters like Tom Loy.

This is clearly something that the Irish were aware of but have recruited well enough to deal with a recruiting loss like this. [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] is one of the best running backs in the country. [autotag]Brandyn Hillman[/autotag] has the ability to play the position as well.

What is a bit concerning is that the Irish are struggling to retain some of their commits as the early signing period approaches. Who knows that’s going on with safety [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] but the Irish have seen [autotag]Dylan Edwards[/autotag] also decommit this month. It is part of the recruiting game.

Ducks become overwhelming favorite to flip 4-star RB Jayden Limar from Notre Dame

There’s been buzz for a while, but the Ducks are now the overwhelming favorites to flip 4-star RB Jayden Limar from Notre Dame.

Four-star running back Jayden Limar gave his verbal commitment to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish back in May of 2022. The Oregon Ducks did not let that dissuade them, still pursuing the Washington athlete who ranks as the No. 17 RB and No. 2 player in Washington for the 2023 class.

It appears those efforts are close to paying off.

On Monday morning, a flood of Crystal Ball projections came in for the Ducks to flip Limar from Notre Dame and land him in the early signing period. This is not groundbreaking news, as there has been some buzz about Limar flipping to Oregon for a few weeks now. Limar has been on multiple visits to Eugene this year, including a last-minute trip to see Coach Carlos Locklyn and the Ducks this past weekend.

We will see in the coming days whether or not the Ducks are able to close the deal and get Limar to officially flip or not, but if they do, it will be a massive win. Oregon already has a commitment from 4-star RB Dante Dowdell, the No. 6 RB in the 2023 class, who has confirmed that he is locked in on his commitment. Adding Limar to that backfield will be a homerun ahead of the early signing period.
