ACC men’s basketball leaders as of Dec. 31

No Notre Dame players.

We would like to wish you and your a Happy New Year. We continue to explore new ways to make this site a wonderful place to visit, and we can’t wait to share them with you. The fact that you keep coming back here motivates us to do better.

Here are the ACC’s major statistical leaders as we begin 2024:

Notre Dame crushes Boston College in New Year’s Day matinee

Can’t play much better than that.

SOUTH BEND — Notre Dame is on a mission in 2023, so it only made sense to start the New Year off right. A decent-sized crowd came out to Purcell Pavilion to see what the Irish could do against a talented Boston College team. What they did was run the Eagles out of the building. This one never was in doubt as the Irish won, 85-48.

The Irish (12-1, 3-0) led wire-to-wire and proved that the talent the Eagles (11-5, 1-2) have just can’t compete with their depth and well-oiled machine. They outhustled, outdefended and outplayed the Eagles throughout. Even the stats showed dominance as the Irish enjoyed sizable leads in points in the paint (56-36), fast-break points (19-9), bench scoring (36-9) and steals (15-8). The Eagles had a decent third quarter with a 19-12 scoring advantage, but other than that, they weren’t able to do much.

[autotag]KK Bransford[/autotag] came off the bench to set a new scoring high for her freshman year with 17 points. [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag] was terrific all-around, also scoring 17 to go with six rebounds and five assists. [autotag]Sonia Citron[/autotag] had a similar line of 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. [autotag]Cassandre Prosper[/autotag] also made an impact in her home debut, scoring seven points and grabbing a game-high nine boards.

Notre Dame readies to face Boston College on New Year’s Day

For your early New Year’s viewing.

Notre Dame won’t have much if any time to celebrate on New Year’s Eve. That’s because a game is scheduled for noon EST on New Year’s Day. The Irish will welcome Boston College to Purcell Pavilion. If you’re a fan of players really making noise in the ACC, this is the game for you.

This contest will feature the ACC’s top two assist leaders in the Irish’s [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag] (7.8) and Eagles freshman Phenom Taina Mair (7.5), who also is the conference’s minutes leader (37.1). The Irish also will have to deal with Dontavia Waggoner, who leads the conference in steals. You better believe [autotag]Niele Ivey[/autotag] will have her team ready for both players.

Since losing a heartbreaker at the buzzer to Maryland, the Irish have won five straight. They will look to continue that streak as ACC play began in earnest with Thursday’s win at Miami. If you want to see if they can, come out to Purcell Pavilion like we will be doing. Otherwise, you can watch on the ACC Network.

Holiday sports TV guide: Trojan football, bowl games, World Cup, USC basketball, NFL

There are two huge sports weekends coming up in the next month, with #USC being part of them. We’ll help you plan your schedule.

The holidays are a time for celebrating and feasting, for taking some time to enjoy life at the end of a difficult year in a generally difficult time. Christmas and New Year’s Day are painful times for some, but if at all possible, it’s good to get away from the grind and recharge before the new year. The week between Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 is the one week of the year when the days of the week blur together. Wednesday doesn’t feel like Wednesday, Monday doesn’t feel like Monday. It’s holiday time and a chance to hopefully take a break.

There’s lots of sports on TV this December, with the World Cup adding an ingredient to the mix. Christmas Day is a Sunday, which means the NFL plays most of its games on Saturday, Dec. 24, this year. There’s also a plot twist involving the big bowl games on Jan. 2. (The big bowls are that day because Jan. 1 is an NFL Sunday.)

USC Athletics is part of this feast of sports on TV. Let’s help you plan your schedule so that you can do other holiday activities in certain time slots:

Notre Dame releases ACC schedule for 2022-23 season

Which game excites you the most?

We now have Notre Dame’s full schedule for the 2022-23 season. We’ve known about the nonconference schedule for a month now. Now, we get to talk about the games that really count. These really will determine whether the Irish return to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.

The Irish will play two nonconsecutive ACC games in December before going to a full-time conference schedule right before New Year’s Day. They will have home-and-homes with six conference opponents and single games with the remaining eight. So it’s nothing atypical with how the ACC schedule works.

As this schedule has just come out, no times or TV networks are out for these games yet. Regardless of what they are, the Irish will be ready to play in their season-long quest to build on the successful 2021-22 season. If you’re planning to go to Purcell Pavilion or even check out another ACC venue, here’s what to mark on your calendar:

CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm predicts Notre Dame-Clemson in Orange Bowl

Would you like to see this rematch?

We have no idea how Notre Dame’s season will play out. Sure, it probably will be a very good one like everyone is predicting, but those predictions are just those. You can say that for just about every team in college football. Still, Jerry Palm of CBS Sports took a crack at predicting every bowl matchup for the coming season, and he has the Irish and Clemson in the Orange Bowl less than two months after the programs’ Nov. 5 meeting at Notre Dame Stadium.

If this comes to pass, five of the Irish’s seven most recent bowls will have been a New Year’s Six bowl. It would give the Irish their third chance since 2018 to beat the Tigers on a big stage after failing badly in the 2018 Cotton Bowl and the 2020 ACC title game. It also would be the Irish’s first Orange Bowl berth since a 31-26 loss to Florida State on New Year’s Day in 1996.

You know you want to see [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and his team tossing the oranges from that trophy out to whoever is in the vicinity after that game, so let’s see them make it happen.

Notre Dame facing biggest test of season against Duke

This is a huge one.

So many storylines will be coming into play when Notre Dame hosts Duke in a game rescheduled from New Year’s Day. The obvious one is that it will be Mike Krzyzewski’s last visit to South Bend. Similarly, Mike Brey will be coaching against his former boss for the final time barring a meeting between the teams in the ACC Tournament. Most importantly, the Blue Devils are the strongest team the Irish have played so far this season, and this game comes at a time when both teams and Miami are bunched closely together in the top three of the conference.

While Blake Wesley could be a first-round pick in this year’s NBA draft, the Blue Devils might have as many four players with that distinction. Perhaps the Irish can counter that with two of the best 3-point shooters in the country: Dane Goodwin and Nate Laszewski. Also, the Irish hopefully will have a rabid crowd at Purcell Pavilion to back them up, and they deserve to have one with their 9-0 record in that building. So many things can topple that powerhouse from Durham.
