Jason Sudeikis did a ‘you can’t see me’ celebration during epic LSU-Iowa March Madness clash

Ted Lasso was loving what he saw in Albany.

Comedian Jason Sudeikis was in attendance for one of the best games of the year as the Ted Lasso star took in the Elite Eight matchup between the LSU and Iowa women’s basketball teams. Monday night’s highly anticipated game was a rematch of the 2023 National Championship game, which was won by Angel Reese and the Tigers.

Sudeikis is no stranger to supporting women’s hoops, with the Horrible Bosses actor frequenting games on both the pro and college level. Late in the fourth quarter, Sudeikis could be seen replicating the “you can’t see me” celebration made famous by wrestler John Cena and adopted by a lot of athletes, including Iowa’s incredible star Caitlin Clark.

The celebration was the same as the one Reese used to taunt Clark in last year’s loss, but the record-setting Hawkeye got revenge in 2024 with a 94-87 victory to make the Final Four.

12 celebrity fans of the Kansas City Chiefs, including Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis

The Chiefs have a TON of famous fans.

If you like tracking celebrity sightings at sporting events, this was an especially busy season to follow the Kansas City Chiefs, who play the San Francisco 49ers in the 2024 Super Bowl on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas.

Taylor Swift has attended numerous games while supporting her partner, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. As such, we have seen many of her very famous friends (including Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively as well as Cara Delevingne and Keileigh Teller) at Kansas City games this season.

Last year, a mic’d up Paul Rudd was the most excited while celebrating on the field with the players after the Chiefs won the Super Bowl. He and his son also gave the most adorable interview following the victory.

But it wasn’t the first time that the famous actor celebrated on the field after Kansas City won the Super Bowl. Rudd was also joined by Eric Stonestreet (the actor who played Cameron in Modern Family) when the Chiefs won the Super Bowl in 2020.

Here are some of the other most notable names rooting for Kansas City:

Jason Sudeikis reminds Bill Self he still has eligibility left while draining threes at Allen Fieldhouse

Barbecue sauce

Jason Sudeikis may have helped teach Americans more about the English Premier League than anyone since David Beckham, but like any good child of Kansas, basketball is still life.

The Jayhawks fan was back in Lawrence this week ahead of Friday’s showdown between No. 4 UConn and No. Kansas and had a chance to show off his stroke for head coach Bill Self at Allen Fieldhouse. And it still looks pretty dang smooth. Even Self had to give him credit.

Sudeikis only had to see a few go down before reminding Self that he still has two years of NCAA eligibility left.

Prior to his career in comedy, Sudeikis was on a basketball scholarship at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas. He’s also gone one-on-one with LeBron James, but that didn’t turn out to well for him.

The Jayhawks, meanwhile, are shooting 35.7 behind the arc to start the year so it’s not like adding Sudeikis as a walk-on is the worst idea.

Taylor Swift fans theorize that Jason Sudeikis is the ‘Cupid’ who set up her and Travis Kelce

Could the Ted Lasso star be the one that put things into motion?

In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Travis Kelce opened up about football, life and his budding relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift. One of the revelations included Kelce indicating he got a little help from someone that was already connected with Swift.

“There were definitely people she knew that knew who I was, in her corner [who said]: Yo! Did you know he was coming? I had somebody playing Cupid,” Kelce said in the interview.

Naturally, that got folks wondering who this magical Cupid could be. Fans think they may have it figured out, and it could be none other than Ted Lasso. Jason Sudeikis, who played the titular football coach (the other football, that is), is a huge Kansas City Chiefs fan and a friend of Swift’s.

Sudeikis was enthusiastically supportive of the Swelce relationship in a Tuesday interview in The Hollywood Reporter, calling the Chiefs tight end “a good egg” and the singer Kansas City’s “adopted daughter.”

So why do people think that it’s Sudeikis? Well, Kelce attended the Eras Tour in Kansas City on July 8, famously sharing the story of how he tried to give her a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it.

Over the next two months, photos surfaced of Swift playing UNO with Sudeikis (and others) at July 13 and August 19 parties hosted by musician Questlove.

By September 21, Kelce was on The Pat McAfee Show, saying he had invited Taylor to come see him play at Arrowhead. Three days later she made her first appearance at a Chiefs game.

Sudeikis = Cupid?

Twitter reacts to ‘Ted Lasso’ referencing the Denver Broncos

Spoilers ahead: The latest Ted Lasso episode makes reference to the Broncos.

Spoilers ahead!

Without getting too deep into the spoiler specifics, the latest episode of Apple’s popular Ted Lasso show makes reference to the Denver Broncos.

In the episode, the coach recalls a story of his friend who grew up a Broncos fan surrounded by Kansas City Chiefs fans. Lasso mentions that the friend had to watch the team’s back-to-back Super Bowl wins in the late 1990s alone, something the coach regrets in hindsight.

While the show mentions Denver’s first two Super Bowl titles, Lasso also makes a jab at the club during the story, calling them a “garbage-ass team.”

Jason Sudeikis, the actor who portrays Ted Lasso, is a big fan of the Kansas City Chiefs in real life, so it’s no surprise that he wanted to take a shot at their rival in the popular TV show.

Here’s a sampling of how Twitter reacted to the Broncos being referenced in this week’s episode of Ted Lasso.

Sudeikis: Winning will end ‘Ted Lasso’ stigma around American coaches

“If American coaches came into this league and won a whole bunch of games it would probably go away”

Jason Sudeikis has said there’s an easy solution for American coaches who are battling the stigma around his show “Ted Lasso” — win some games.

After being named Leeds head coach last year, Jesse Marsch admitted that the hit Apple TV show may not have helped perceptions around American managers in Europe.

“I think there’s probably a stigma. I’m not sure ‘Ted Lasso’ helped. I haven’t watched the show, but I get it,” Marsch said at a news conference in March 2022.

“People hate hearing the word soccer — I’ve used the word football since I was a professional football player. More and more in the States we’re adapting to what the game here is, and our connection to what this league is and what the sport is in this country.”

In the show Sudeikis plays Lasso, who takes over fictional Premier League team AFC Richmond despite having almost no knowledge of the sport.

In an interview with Gary Neville on Sky Sports, Sudeikis said he hasn’t had the chance to speak to Marsch, but brushed aside any concerns that the show could be unfairly stigmatizing American coaches in Europe.

“That’s not the intention at all and I haven’t had the opportunity to apologize or explain myself yet with Jesse Marsch,” Sudeikis said.

“I think it’s a little lazy of anybody to correlate the two, but that’s never our intention to make things more difficult. But I do know that ultimately, if American coaches came into this league and won a whole bunch of games, that would probably go away.”

After the interview was released Marsch responded on Twitter, saying: “No worries @jasonsudeikis! I’m a big fan!!”

After nearly a year in charge, Marsch was sacked as Leeds manager in February with the club close to the relegation zone.

How this beautiful Ted Lasso scene captured the ‘ache’ of being a gay man in professional sports

Ted Lasso’s Trent Crimm and Colin Hughes had a powerful conversation at the Homomonument in Amsterdam.

Warning: DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED EPISODE 6 OF TED LASSO SEASON 3.

Ready?

Ok.

Welcome back to Ted Lasso on For The Win! Each week of the 12-episode season, we will chat about the latest episode in the Ted Lasso universe. Let’s dig into it.

Some Ted Lasso fans were initially concerned that journalist Trent Crimm would “out” AFC Richmond wing Colin Hughes after initially discovering his sexuality earlier this season. It took a few episodes, but we finally got our answer.

Colin (portrayed by Billy Harris, who made his TV debut with this show) was also skeptical when he discovered that Trent (played by James Lance) was at the gay bar that the Richmond footballer snuck out to attend. But he eventually realized that the writer is approaching this conversation with good faith.

It was an important conversation for Colin and Trent, who was potentially the first person in sports he had ever spoken to about his sexuality.

Trent and Colin eventually made their way to the Homomonument, a memorial in Amsterdam that commemorates all LGBTQ+ individuals who lost their lives in World War II and who have been persecuted due to their sexual orientation.

Trent, who revealed that he is also gay and has the support of his family, gave Colin an opportunity to share his truth.

They spoke about the ache — such a powerful word — that they have each felt. Trent, formerly of The Independent and now independently writing a book about Richmond much like Grant Wahl did with the L.A. Galaxy, did not take out his microphone or his notebook. He just listened.

The writer allowed Colin to feel comfortable enough to open up and share details about his experience as a privately gay athlete playing at the highest levels in the English Premier League.

Trent shared that it was “really difficult” for him to hold on to his secret.

“I’m not a professional athlete,” Trent said. “How do you do it?”

Colin detailed how he essentially has to live two lives — one is his work life, where he has kept his sexuality a secret, and one is his dating life. He explained that his work in therapy with Dr. Sharon helped him realize how much this divide has hurt him. Why can’t they be the same life?

“I don’t want to be a spokesperson. I don’t want a bunch of apologies. All I want is for when we win a match to be able to kiss my fella the same way that guys get to kiss their girls,” Colin said. “I know we can’t fix every ache inside of us. But I shouldn’t have to pretend it’s not there, either.”

There are plenty of gay athletes who are speaking out and leading the way to advocate for social progress, but as Colin explained, some folks simply don’t want the attention. This is one of the many reasons there are few openly gay male athletes in pro sports. From Cyd Ziegler:

“Some athletes don’t want their being gay or bi to be part of how they’re most-known. For that reason, some of these men will choose to keep that part of their life private… which delays when they won’t feel they have to anymore.”

We had more openly LGBTQ+ athletes at the 2021 Olympics than ever before, and we’re seeing more and more openly gay men playing at the professional level.

Although the English musician Sam Smith identifies as non-binary and genderqueer, when they were asked about their sexuality in 2014, they said they don’t want to be a spokesperson — they only wanted to live their life and write music about it.

So if all Colin wants to do is live his life and play football, that is what he deserves as well.

The catharsis and euphoria that these two individuals share when they’ve landed on the same page and can just be themselves is so powerful — and looks so fun.

It is wonderful to see that type of male friendship depicted on TV, no matter the context. But the gay male friendship in the world of sports on a show as big as Ted Lasso was even more powerful.

I’m a professional sportswriter. One of my goals in my career is to earn the trust of the subjects that I’m writing about. This episode nailed that.

But to accomplish this is not easy and requires a certain level of empathy, catching someone at the right time, and presenting yourself as someone who is willing and able to connect on a human-to-human level. It is an incredibly delicate balance and candidly, it does not always work.

It was so moving to watch how well Trent Crimm accomplished all of that (and more) during his heart-to-heart conversation with Colin Hughes.

Ted Lasso hid a touching tribute to late journalist Grant Wahl during the newest episode

“It ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe.”

“It ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe.”

Those were the Bob Dylan lyrics that fans heard during the end credits as the latest episode of Ted Lasso paid tribute to the late journalist Grant Wahl. It is a perfectly fitting way to memorialize Wahl, whose unexpected death in December shook the sports world.

Wahl died of an aortic aneurysm while covering the World Cup in Qatar.

Ted Lasso co-creator Brendan Hunt said he and the showrunners felt obligated to “carry on the train of salutes to his memory” during the new season.

But it wasn’t actually just a tribute during the end credits. In fact, midway through the episode, there is actually an Easter egg that you may have missed if you weren’t watching closely.

Coach Beard was holding a copy of Wahl’s book. Here is how it looked:

Beyond his contributions to the game of soccer, Wahl was actually directly affiliated with this show. Hunt says that the writer’s room reached out to Wahl to ask about his book The Beckham Experiment.

They hoped to hear what it was like for Wahl to write a book while embedded within a team with a new superstar on the roster so that they could apply it to their characters Trent Crimm and Zava (via Rich Eisen Show):

“Grant Wahl came back with paragraphs of answers within two days. He was incredibly generous with his experiences and it was really, really great and pretty helpful. We have a little nod to him coming up in this next episode. This was when he was still with us. We did not know what was going to come to pass.”

Hunt and Jason Sudeikis also appeared on Wahl’s podcast; it was the second-most downloaded episode he ever had.

Wahl later visited the Ted Lasso set in England and wrote about the experience on his Substack.

“The show brought a lightness that I didn’t realize how much I needed. It was a little like the effect the show itself had on me when I started watching during the pandemic.”

The show continues to bring light to Wahl’s loved ones. Wahl’s wife, Dr. Céline Gounder, tweeted that the tributes in this episode “means so much” to her and her family.

Why everyone is talking about Ted Lasso’s first LGBTQ+ character

This is a big deal.

Welcome to our Ted Lasso Power Rankings! Each week of the 12-episode season, For The Win will chat about the latest episode to see who is thriving and who is straight up not having a good time in the Ted Lasso universe. Let’s dig into it.

This was a huge episode for one particular player on AFC Richmond: Colin Hughes, portrayed by actor Billy Harris.

Although he was often in the background as a tertiary character during the previous two seasons, the latest episode of Ted Lasso brings him to center stage in his reveal as the show’s first LGBTQ+ character. It was a strong decision to give Colin the justice that he deserves.

Ted Lasso co-creator Brendan Hunt spoke about including queer representation on the show (via Radio Times):

“It was just a matter of when we were going to finally get to that. It’s still a taboo in football, but there are more active players who are coming out … It’s just part of what’s happening in football. We may be a fake football club, but we’re trying to show a little bit of football reality here.”

According to Hunt, the showrunners have known for “a while” that Welsh wing Colin Hughes is gay.

Some careful viewers may have noticed that in the third episode of Season 2, Hughes mentions that Keeley’s dating app Bantr is spelled like the gay dating app Grindr.

AFC Richmond was down in the dumps during the premiere of Season 3.

But things started looking up during “(I Don’t Want To Go To) Chelsea” and suddenly, this club could actually be a real contender in the English Premier League.

Although this season is clearly building up to a match against the Nathan Shelley-led rival West Ham United, the second episode of the season featured a big match against Chelsea FC.
