Colts release OL Jason Spriggs

The Colts released OL Jason Spriggs.

The Indianapolis Colts released offensive lineman Jason Spriggs, the team announced Friday.

Even though Spriggs had been working as the backup right guard behind starter Danny Pinter, the Colts got a head start on their roster cuts. Following Saturday’s preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills, the Colts will have until Tuesday to release five players from the 90-man roster.

With Spriggs released, it could mean that second-year offensive lineman Will Fries is closer to solidifying a roster spot as a depth piece along the offensive line.

Spriggs will now have the rest of the preseason to find another job with a different team.

Colts’ 2022 training camp preview: Interior offensive line

Previewing the Colts interior offensive line entering training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts are less than two weeks away from the start of training camp at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield.

With a new quarterback in town for the fifth consecutive season, the offensive line is also expecting to look a bit different than it did in 2021. The core of the group remains intact, but one spot on the interior will have a new starter.

The departure of Mark Glowinski, who signed with the New York Giants, and Chris Reed, who signed with the Minnesota Vikings, left a void at the starting right guard spot this offseason.

Be sure to check out the other position previews ahead of training camp:

Wrapping up the offensive side of the ball, this preview will focus on the guard and center positions:

6 toughest cuts from our latest Colts’ roster projection

Here were the toughest cuts from our latest Colts’ roster projection.

Though the Indianapolis Colts don’t report to Westfield for training camp for another month, it’s still not a bad idea to take a look at the roster and how things might shake out when cuts come along.

There are plenty of questions that still have yet to be answered, and most of them won’t be answered until training camp and the preseason games are concluded at the end of August.

But as we projected the 53-man roster following the conclusion of minicamp, we have an idea about how the roster might break down. We did so at each position in our latest projection.

Here, we are going to take a look at the toughest cuts from that roster projection and why those players didn’t make the cut:

Colts sign DE Bryan Cox Jr., OT Jason Spriggs

The Colts added DE Bryan Cox Jr. and OT Jason Spriggs.

The Indianapolis Colts signed defensive end Bryan Cox Jr. and offensive tackle Jason Spriggs and waived defensive end Cullen Wick, the team announced Friday.

Cox was one of the five players who attended the team’s minicamp on a tryout basis. In 26 career games with the Carolina Panthers (2017-2019), Cleveland Browns (2019) and Buffalo Bills (2020), Cox has recorded five tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks.

Spriggs was a second-round pick with the Green Bay Packers during the 2016 NFL draft where he spent four seasons. He also spent time with the Chicago Bears (2020) and Atlanta Falcons (2021).

Wick joined the Colts following the 2022 NFL draft as an undrafted rookie free agent.

Falcons sign LB Emmanuel Ellerbee, OL Jason Spriggs

The Atlanta Falcons signed outside linebacker Emmeuel Ellerbee and offensive lineman Jason Spriggs on Monday, while releasing running back Tony Brooks-James.

The Atlanta Falcons signed outside linebacker Emmeuel Ellerbee and offensive lineman Jason Spriggs on Monday, while releasing running back Tony Brooks-James.

Ellerbee, 24, went undrafted out of Rice back in 2018 before being signed by the Falcons. He never made it into a regular season game in Atlanta, but would play for the Los Angeles Chargers and Seattle Seahawks from 2018-2020.

The Falcons have been low on outside linebacker depth since releasing Barkevious Mingo and Ellerbee can add something to special teams — where he contributed most during his time with the Chargers and Seahawks.

Spriggs, 27, was a second-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2016, but injuries kept him from being a major contributor. Over his five-year NFL career, he’s appeared in 44 games with nine starts. Spriggs should provide depth behind Kaleb McGary at right tackle.

Bears injury report: David Montgomery, John Jenkins ruled out vs. Vikings

Chicago has four players that have been ruled out and four questionable against the Vikings on Monday.

The Chicago Bears have been relatively lucky on the injury front through the first half of this season. But it seems like injuries have finally caught up to them.

Chicago Bears sign OL Eric Kush to practice squad

The Bears added some much-needed depth at offensive line with the return of a familiar face in iOL Eric Kush to the practice squad.

The Chicago Bears added some much-needed depth at offensive line with the return of a familiar face.

The Bears have signed interior offensive lineman Eric Kush to the practice squad, the team announced on Tuesday. Kush previously played for Chicago back in 2016-18.

Kush has experience in Matt Nagy’s offense and can play either center or guard. Chicago has released Aaron Neary from the practice squad in conjunction with Kush’s addition.

The Bears have had major issues on the offensive line over the last few weeks, particularly when it comes to injuries. They lost left guard James Daniels a few weeks ago to a torn pectoral muscle, and right tackle Bobby Massie landed on injured reserve with a knee injury expected to sideline him at least a month.

But the Bears also dealt with a COVID-19 scare as center Cody Whitehair and reserve tackle Jason Spriggs both tested positive for the virus, which sidelined them last week. Back-up center Sam Mustipher also missed last Sunday’s game with a knee injury. Although Spriggs has since been activated off the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Bears started Alex Bars at center and seventh-round rookie Arlington Hambright against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, and they were encouraging in their first starts.

Still, Chicago’s struggles on the offensive line remain one of the biggest concerns on this team. It’s been evident in their run blocking — with the Bears the worst run game in the league — and in pass protection — with a statuesque Nick Foles.

The addition of Kush provides a little stability should Chicago’s offensive line struggles continue.

Bears activate OL Jason Spriggs, DB Michael Joseph from reserve/COVID-19 list

The Bears nearly suffered a COVID-19 outbreak last week as several players tested positive for the virus. Now, two have been activated.

The Chicago Bears nearly suffered a COVID-19 outbreak last week as several players tested positive for the virus, including a couple of offensive linemen.

The Bears activated offensive tackle Jason Spriggs and defensive back Michael Joseph from the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced Monday.

Spriggs saw action at right tackle in place of an injured Bobby Massie against the New Orleans Saints. Spriggs later tested positive for COVID-19, and he missed last Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans. The Bears get back some depth on the offensive line with the return of Spriggs.

Meanwhile, Joseph was on injured reserve before testing positive for the virus. He’ll remain on IR.

The Bears aren’t out of the woods just yet on the COVID-19 front. Center Cody Whitehair, safety Deon Bush and offensive lineman Lachavious Simmons remain on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
