New Michigan State football transfer RB Jarek Broussard named to Doak Walker Award watchlist

New Michigan State transfer running back Jarek Broussard named to Doak Walker Award watchlist

Last year, Michigan State football shocked the nation as their unheralded transfer running back from Wake Forest, Kenneth Walker III, ran his way into the Heisman Trophy conversation and earned himself the Doak Walker Award. This year, they will try to repeat that success with Jarek Broussard.

Broussard, a transfer to the Spartans from Mel Tucker’s last home of Colorado, was named to the Doak Walker Award watchlist on Wednesday.

Broussard certainly has the talent – he rushed for 1,556 yards over two seasons with the Buffaloes and will now be able to show what he can do on an even bigger stage with MSU.

Trio of incoming MSU transfers officially start summer classes, join football program

Michigan State has officially welcomed three of their most touted incoming transfers into their football program

Michigan State has officially welcomed three of their most touted incoming transfers into their football program.

Chris Solari of The Detroit Free Press reported on Monday that tight end Daniel Barker (Illinois), running back Jarek Broussard (Colorado) and offensive lineman Brian Greene (Washington State) have all officially arrived to Michigan State. The three grad transfers have arrived with summer classes beginning this week.

In two years with Colorado, Broussard ran for 1,556 yards and seven touchdowns on 298 carries.

Daniel Barker comes from a fellow Big Ten school in Illinois. In his time with the Fighting Illini, Barker had 64 receptions for 827 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Greene was a two-year starter at Washington State at center, and was an All-Pac-12 Conference Honorable Mention.

All three of these incoming transfers missed spring practice but are expected to contend for starting roles this upcoming season. So it’s great to see each of these three players officially arrive to Michigan State and get started with the Spartans football program.

What led RB Jarek Broussard to Michigan State football

Relationships and Spartan Nation helped bring Colorado RB transfer Jarek Broussard to Michigan State

Michigan State’s offensive coaching staff gained a commitment from a game-changing running back Jarek Broussard, a transfer from Colorado. Broussard possesses a unique skillset, a shifty speed back that can make people miss and can change the pace of a game, something that will pair perfectly with the downhill power runners MSU already has in Jalen Berger and Eli Collins.

Broussard committed to Michigan State after taking an official visit over the weekend, a visit in which the transfer was blown away by the campus, the coaches and Spartan Nation.

Broussard got his first taste of Spartan Nation alongside the rivalry with the University of Michigan, and he is definitely embracing both.

“The thing that stood out most on my visit was the basketball game vs the school from up the road, the atmosphere was through the roof and it gave me a glimpse of gameday on Saturday. Spartan Nation is serious,” Broussard explained.

It usually takes time to digest a visit and make a decision on whether or not someone wants to commit or not, but Broussard knew he wanted to make the move to be a part of Spartan nation after his visit.

MSU is like a big family and I’m big on family also when Coach Johnson showed me the practice film from 2019. It brought back memories but It also made me feel like it was meant to be. Almost a full-circle moment.”

There was a period of time that many in the industry thought Oregon was the leader for Broussard, but that didn’t stop MSU’s hot pursuit, eventually setting the Spartans apart from the rest.

What set MSU apart the most was culture. Being on campus and meeting with people made me realize how rich the history was.,” Broussard explained. “To actually have players who played and had an impact on past teams that were really good was great to see (Darien Harris). The whole weekend was great and I want to thank the entire recruiting team. They made me feel like it was home already.”

Effrem Reed was promoted to take over MSU’s vacant RB coach position, his first job in the role. Reed has been on a roll on the recruiting trail and has a lot of people excited about what he can do coaching the position.

Coach Effrem is great and he’s young. It’s always great to see young guys get a shot. He’s originally from Louisiana too so all good vibes. Everything was genuine,” Broussard said.

Ultimately, Broussard will be donning the green and white this upcoming fall and will be a focal point of the offense and in the efforts to replace Kenneth Walker. But what is Broussard most excited about in becoming a Spartan?

The thing I’m looking forward to most is Saturdays. I can’t wait to play in front of Spartan Nation and build bonds with my teammates,” Broussard said.

Jarek Broussard commits to Michigan State, joins Mel Tucker in East Lansing

Jarek Broussard committed to Michigan State

Seventeen days after he entered the transfer portal in mid-January, former Buffs running back Jarek Broussard announced via Twitter on Sunday that he has committed to Michigan State.

The 2020 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year now reunites with Mel Tucker, who led the Buffs during a 2019 season in which Broussard was injured.

Broussard was also interested in Oregon and even took a trip to Eugene, but fortunately for Colorado, decided to join the Big Ten with two years of eligibility remaining.

With Michigan State’s latest addition, its backfield could once again be deadly next season. The Spartans recently gained Wisconsin transfer Jalen Berger, plus they return Eli Collins, Jordan Simmons and Harold Joiner.

Colorado RB transfer commits to Michigan State football

MSU has beat out the Oregon Ducks for a Colorado RB transfer, the 2020 PAC-12 Offensive Player of the Year

Michigan State has tapped into the transfer portal for another running back in this off-season. Joining Wisconsin transfer, Jalen Berger, to MSU’s backfield is Colorado RB transfer Jarek Broussard. Broussard was the 2020 PAC-12 Offensive Player of the Year while at Colorado.

Broussard will be bringing two years of eligibility with him to East Lansing, after playing his previous two seasons with Colorado. In his two years in Boulder, Broussard ran for 1,556 yards on 298 attempts with 7 touchdowns. He also caught 22 passes for 146 yards.

Standing at 5-foot-9 and 185 pounds, Broussard will give the MSU backfield a much different look. A speed back that will pair beautifully with the downhill running backs that already reside in  East Lansing including Berger, Eli Collins, Jordan Simmons and Harold Joiner.

The Spartans beat out the Oregon Ducks, who were the perceived favorites, to win the commitment of Broussard.

Former Colorado RB Jarek Broussard commits to Michigan State over Oregon

Jarek Broussard is heading to East Lansing. Broussard took a visit to Eugene earlier this month.

[jwplayer gFwSOeGu]

One of the better running backs in the transfer portal, Jarek Broussard, has announced that he is committing to the Michigan State Spartans.

Broussard, who was the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year with the Colorado Buffaloes in 2020, visited the Oregon Ducks a week ago and was thought by many to be coming to the Ducks this offseason.

Watching Broussard go to MSU makes sense, with his former coach at Colorado, Mel Tucker, now the head man with the Spartans. However, it is a bit of a blow for Oregon fans who were hoping that Broussard would be coming to Eugene. The Ducks have a need at the RB spot after both CJ Verdell and Travis Dye left this offseason.

There is still some hope that the Ducks land a top recruit in the 2022 class, but it would be smart for them to try and find someone in the portal to help get some experience in the backfield next season.

[listicle id=17144]

Do the Oregon Ducks need to look to the NCAA Transfer Portal for RB help?

With no CJ Verdell or Travis Dye for the 2022 season, the transfer portal could play a big factor in bolstering Oregon’s RB depth chart.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01f27mq9z7hjgk6vc6 player_id=none image=https://duckswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Much of the Oregon Ducks fanbase has been emotionally preparing for the news that was released on Monday morning. CJ Verdell announced that he will be ending his career in Eugene and heading to the 2022 NFL draft.

The announcement came just a few days after former Oregon RB Travis Dye announced that he would be transferring to the USC Trojans to finish out his college career.

And just like that, arguably one of the best RB tandems in Oregon history is out the door. With them go 1,062 carries, 6,031 yards, and 47 rushing touchdowns. Add to that the combined 142 catches for 1,488 yards and 12 touchdowns, and it’s easy to see that the Ducks certainly have a hole to fill in the backfield.

[lawrence-related id=16956]

Does Oregon currently have the players on the roster who can fill that hole?

Part of what makes this transition away from Verdell and Dye a little bit easier to swallow for fans is the fact that a trio of Byron Cardwell, Seven McGee, and Sean Dollars look primed and ready to take over. Cardwell burst onto the scene after Verdell’s injury in 2021, and he looks capable of becoming a premier back if given the opportunity. Nonetheless, that trio has a lot of work to do in order to prove that they can keep up the production that we’ve grown used to in Eugene. At the moment, those three will enter the 2022 season with a combined 103 touches for 694 total yards and 4 touchdowns. There’s certainly some high upside, but without us knowing how any of them will perform over an entire season’s time, a low floor is there if we choose to acknowledge it.

That leads us to a potential solution for the Ducks — might it be time to look at the NCAA transfer portal for help?

Dan Lanning and his staff are way ahead of us. Over the past weekend, when a flurry of recruits aged 18 and under were on campus for both official and unofficial visits, one player stood apart. Former Colorado Buffaloes running back Jarek Broussard was in Eugene checking out the school a few weeks after entering the transfer portal himself.

Broussard is an interesting player to consider, simply because of his past resume. In 2020, he was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 895 yards and 5 touchdowns in the pandemic-shortened season. He had a bit of a down-year in 2021, putting up only 661 yards and 2 touchdowns, but still presents a veteran presence that the Ducks are sorely missing in the backfield at the moment.

If you think it’s a pipe-dream that Oregon can simply snag a heralded player out of the portal days after losing two of their best players from the 2021 roster, you should think again. According to the 247 Sports Crystal Ball predictor, Director of Football Recruiting Steve Wiltfong has entered a prediction that shows he is confident Broussard will end up with the Ducks. It certainly seems like Broussard enjoyed his time in Eugene over the weekend, as well.

Over the next few days, or weeks, we will likely find out what the future holds for Broussard and the Ducks. However, after the news that came from Verdell on Monday, it seems pretty clear that Oregon is making a push for the former Colorado star in trying to fill out their RB depth.

Jarek Broussard, 2020 Pac-12 Offensive POY, takes visit to Oregon Ducks

The 2020 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year is in Eugene. Colorado transfer RB Jarek Broussard announced his arrival on Twitter.

[jwplayer S4Kjh3FZ]

A lot of our focus this week has been on the incredible number of highly-rated recruits who are flocking to Eugene this weekend to take both official and unofficial visits to the Oregon Ducks. While that is happening, though, a potentially more impactful player is also making the visit to the great northwest as well.

Former Colorado Buffaloes running back Jarek Broussard announced on Twitter that he is in Eugene on Saturday, likely taking a visit to the Oregon campus. Broussard, who was the 2020 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year, recently entered the transfer portal and is looking for a new home.

Just earlier this week, 247 Sports’ Steve Wiltfong entered a Crystal Ball Prediction on the website that shows he is confident that Broussard is going to end up transferring to Oregon. This visit to Eugene is likely a step in that process, should things play out that way in the end.
