Quotes from Mel Tucker’s post-Akron press conference

Mel Tucker took the podium following his team’s 52-0 win over Akron

Michigan State improved to 2-0 on Saturday following a 52-0 thumping of the Akron Zips.

It was a much better performance by the Spartans, and the team looked much more poised and dominant than they were a week ago against Western Michigan.

Mel Tucker took the podium a much happier man, but never content, following the win.

WATCH: Michigan State football QB Noah Kim throws first career touchdown

Watch Noah Kim throw a dime for his first career touchdown pass

Michigan State is in good hands with Payton Thorne leading the charge as the starting quarterback, but it is also good to know that there is a capable backup if Thorne had to mis a period of time.

While true freshman Katin Houser is who some expected to be that guy, it appears Noah Kim is settling into that role. Last week, Kim threw a beautiful deep ball on the one play he entered the game, resulting in a defensive pass interference call. This week, Kim saw some action after Thorne was hit hard and had to enter the medical tent, and Kim made the most of it.

Rolling to his left, Kim hit Tre Mosely with a dime to find the endzone. This was Kim’s first career completion, attempt and touchdown.

Michigan State football throttles Akron, improves to 2-0

MSU shuts out Akron, improves to 2-0

Michigan State took care of their business on Saturday night, dominating Akron, 52-0. This was the first shutout for the Spartans since 2019, when the Spartans shutout Rutgers 27-0.

The Spartans were led by their two headed rushing attack of Jalen Berger and Jarek Broussard. Berger would score three times while carrying the ball 17 times for 107 yards. Broussard added two touchdowns while carrying the ball 15 times for 81 yards.

Michigan State’s defense was also a huge part of allowing the Spartans offense to prevail, the Spartans defense forced four Akron turnovers in the game, with the offense capitalizing on all of them for touchdowns.

The Spartans will look to continue the momentum into next week’s clash in Seattle against the Washington Huskies.

Michigan State vs Akron Game Preview

Why Akron Will Win

Break up the Zips.

New head coach Joe Moorhead knows how to get a team going in a hurry, and his team came though with a fun overtime win over St. Francis.

Don’t knock it – this is a program that won three games since the middle of 2018.

DJ Irons is a dangerous all-around quarterback, the offense is designed to spread the ball around a bit, and the defense is going to press a Michigan State secondary that was good in the opener against Western Michigan, but is still going to be tested.

There’s a strong chance the Spartans are looking ahead to Washington and Minnesota, and …

Why Michigan State Will Win

The Spartans might have fixed the glitch.

The combination of Jalen Berger and Jarek Broussard from the transfer portal looked strong against the Broncos, Payton Thorne hit several deep plays – even if he wasn’t exactly sharp – and most importantly to start the season, the pass defense wasn’t ripped to shreds.

It all started with a defensive front that didn’t give WMU QB Jack Salopek any time to work, and it showed as the secondary that had a disastrous 2021 got the job done against a dangerous offense.

Akron doesn’t have the weapons Western Michigan has and is about to have a long day trying to move the ball against this defensive front.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan State won’t have much of a problem putting this away early.

It was a bit of a slow start against Western Michigan, but the defense will keep Akron from moving the chains – expect at least five sacks – and the offensive balance will take over with even more coming from the running game this week.
