Broncos tried out 8 players this week, including a quarterback

Eight players tried out for the Broncos earlier this week, including QB Jarrett Guarantano.

The Denver Broncos worked out eight players on Tuesday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire. Here’s a quick recap of the players who tried out for the club earlier this week.

  • QB Jarrett Guarantano: Transferred as a graduate from Tennessee to Washington State in 2021 and was signed by the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent this spring. He failed to make their 53-man roster and began his rookie season on Arizona’s practice squad before being cut last month.
  • TE Jevon Cottoy: Went straight from high school football in Canada to playing in the Canadian Junior Football League before eventually landing in the CFL. He played WR in Canada but the Broncos worked him out as a TE.
  • TE Josh Hokit: TE with FB experience who has spent time with the San Francisco 49ers and Cardinals. Yet to play in a regular season game in the NFL since entering the league in 2020.
  • TE Briley Moore: Spent his rookie season on injured reserve with the Tennessee Titans after tearing his ACL in 2021. Recently selected by the DC Defenders to play in the upcoming season of the XFL.
  • WR Jaquarii Roberson: Rookie out of Wake Forest who has spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills this year, bouncing between practice squads.
  • WR Kevin Kassis: Signed with Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of Montana State in the spring. Began the year on Seattle’s practice squad before being cut last week.
  • WR Brandon Lewis: Signed with the Titans as a college free agent in May after playing college football for the Air Force. He was waived during preseason.
  • LB Ray Wilborn: Spent time with the Green Bay Packers earlier this year before working out for Denver. Signed to the Broncos’ practice squad after his tryout on Tuesday.

The seven players who did not sign with Denver might be candidates to sign reserve/future contracts with the Broncos after the season ends.

Browns had 4 in for tryouts including new practice squad signee Cyril Grayson

The Browns had four players in for tryouts today, including their newest practice squad member Cyril Grayson

The Cleveland Browns held tryouts once again this week. This is not the first time this season that a player has been signed to the practice squad from a tryout, and it may not be the last time. Former Miami Redhawks’ safety Mike Brown won a spot on the practice squad in a tryout, and now wide receiver Cyril Grayson has done the same.

The Browns, however, did have three other players in for tryouts as well, so the churning of their practice squad could continue. Here we take a look at all four names and provide a bit of background information on all of them.

Bills sign WR Jaquarii Roberson to practice squad

#Bills sign a former #Steelers player…

The Buffalo Bills filled the vacant space on their practice squad with another wide receiver very quickly.

On Wednesday, the team and veteran Tavon Austin mutually agreed to part ways. Buffalo wasted no time.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, rookie Jaquarii Roberson has signed on the dotted line already. He joins the team’s practice squad.

Roberson, 24, was an undrafted rookie signing of the Dallas Cowboys following the 2022 NFL draft. However, that’s not his most recent team.

Roberson made his way to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo’s upcoming opponent on Sunday. He was only released by the Steelers on Tuesday.

There will likely be connections made regarding intel Roberson could provide the Bills ahead of that matchup.

Despite that, the Buffalo has had a legitimate injury problem in their receiver room. Jake Kumerow and Jamison Crowder are both out due to ankle injuries. The status of Isaiah McKenzie (concussion) is also unclear.

Roberson is unlikely to be the next-man up but he does provide depth.

In college at Wake Forest, Roberson recorded 145 catches for 2,158 yards and 17 touchdowns in 40 games played. He was a second-team, All-ACC selection his final two seasons there.

Evaluating Chargers’ options after season-ending injury to Jalen Guyton

Looking at a few wide receivers the Chargers could consider bringing in after the season-ending injury to Jalen Guyton.

The Chargers are in the market for a new speed threat.

Jalen Guyton tore his ACL Sunday, marking the third long-term injury suffered in the Jaguars game. Rashawn Slater (biceps) is also out for the season, while Joey Bosa (groin) is week-to-week.

Guyton’s absence is of underrated importance, considering that Los Angeles now lacks a bona fide speed threat at wide receiver. Such a role has been an oft-criticized omission from Joe Lombardi’s offense through three weeks.

Here are a few receivers LA could look to bring onto the active roster.

Joe Reed

Reed seems the likeliest addition, considering he’s already on the Chargers’ practice squad and briefly pushed to stay on the active roster before a minor injury all but ended his preseason. Reed could also be an important addition as a kick returner, seeing that DeAndre Carter’s role is likely to expand on offense. Protecting him from taking extra hits on special teams will be an emphasis, at least in theory. A fifth-round pick in 2020, Reed has the speed to fill Guyton’s role, but his route running is a work in progress, and he’d primarily be added to the roster as a special teams player.

John Ross

If we’re talking about speed, we have to mention Ross, the owner of the fastest 40 time in NFL Combine history. Just 26 years old, Ross has struggled with lower body injuries, part of the reason he’s currently a free agent. It was reported in August that the former Washington Husky was working to rehab a knee injury he suffered last season, with hopes to catch on with a team around the start of the season. The barrier to entry for Ross is twofold, however: one, he must prove he’s healthy. Two, Brandon Staley and Joe Lombardi, have shown preference to receivers that can win at multiple levels of the field. Without designed touches in the screen game, Ross is only a deep ball threat at this stage.

Will Fuller

Fuller has shown NFL ability as recently as 2020 when he finished with career highs in receptions (53), yards (879), and touchdowns (8) with Houston. But similar to Ross, Fuller’s questions will be all about health. The 28-year-old has never played every game in a season and remains a free agent despite reported interest from multiple teams in August. Does that mean he’s asking for too much money for what he is, or is he not the player he once was because of injuries piling up?

Odell Beckham Jr.

Beckham is probably the biggest name on the wide receiver market right now, and for good reason. After forcing his way out of a bad situation in Cleveland, OBJ showed he still has the talent that made him one of the faces of the league with the Rams last season before tearing his ACL in the Super Bowl. There are a few problems with the Chargers bringing Beckham in, though. Number one: Beckham won’t be ready to contribute right away. The last report we got about his health suggested he’d be full go in October or November, a timeline that the Bolts can’t afford to stick to. Secondly, OBJ has been pretty clear that he wants to sign with a contender, and he’ll have ample time to pick and choose which teams are in that upper echelon by the time he’s ready to return. With the other injuries on this roster, LA is not likely to be on that list.

Dede Westbrook

Westbrook would likely be a practice squad signing that the Chargers elevate to give him a test run for a few weeks before committing to an active roster spot, but he checks many boxes for this team. Westbrook ran a 4.39 at the combine and played under special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken in Minnesota last season, so he knows what Ficken expects. That will be an important factor for a midseason signing, especially one expected to fill the shoes of Guyton, who was also one of Los Angeles’ punt gunners in the first three weeks.

Bo Melton

Melton was a favorite of ours at Chargers Wire during draft season because of his explosive athleticism and surprising physicality. He ended up being drafted late by the Seahawks, but they moved him to the practice squad before the season, leaving him available to teams hungry for depth at the position. That means LA potentially has the ability to right the wrong of not addressing the position in the draft. Melton is a smaller, slot-limited player, which may hurt his chances of becoming a Charger. But his college tape is full of plays at every level of the field and top-end speed. He’s the kind of receiver L.A. could use if they get creative.

Jaquarii Roberson

Roberson was a player I thought was draftable this spring, but his lack of special teams experience and value pushed him into the undrafted ranks. After being cut by the Cowboys, he latched on with the Steelers, where he’s currently on the practice squad. That, again, makes him available to teams like LA. Roberson isn’t a true burner, but he does accelerate to a pretty high gear when he gets going, and his proficiency on double moves often resulted in wide open plays at Wake Forest. Much like Melton, he’s a smaller receiver, and Roberson struggles as a blocker. But beggars can’t be choosers, and at this point, there are plenty worse options than Roberson.

Chiefs to host Wake Forest WR Jaquarii Roberson for top-30 visit this week

The #Chiefs are set to host one of the most productive receivers in college football over the past two seasons on a top-30 visit per report.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to do their homework on what is considered to be a deep wide receiver class.

The team has already hosted five draft-eligible receivers on top-30 visits and they’ll have another one in later this week. According to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo, the Chiefs are set to host Wake Forest WR Jaquarii Roberson on a top-30 visit this week. Roberson already spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals and worked out for the Los Angeles Chargers and Carolina Panthers. He’s set to meet with both the Baltimore Ravens and the Chiefs this week on visits per Melo’s report.

Roberson redshirted as a true freshman with Wake Forest in 2017. He worked his way up the ladder playing special teams and working as a reserve for the Demon Deacons. Over the past two seasons, Roberson has seen breakout performances with more playtime and better quarterback play to the tune of 133 receptions for over 2,000 yards and 16 touchdown passes. Only Penn State’s Jahan Dotson and Alabama’s John Metchie had more combined receiving yards in the past two seasons among draft-eligible prospects.

A snub from the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine, Roberson was a standout at his pro day. He weighed in at a hair under 6-1 and 186 pounds, posting a 4.43s 40-yard dash, a 4.18s shuttle run, a 6.88s 3-cone, a 40-inch vertical jump, and a 131-inch broad jump. All times would have rivaled top scores at the combine.

Roberson has a penchant for making big plays on third down, which will be valuable in any NFL offense. He’s a strong route-runner with good hands and body control. He’s really good at creating separation at the top of his routes and he’s surprisingly elusive with the ball in his hands even though he’s not going to be the fastest guy on the field. Right now, Roberson

Browns mock draft watch: Pro Football Network mocks full seven rounds

Browns mock draft watch: Pro Football Network mocks full seven rounds broken down by our @joshkeatley16 #Browns

Well this weekend was not ideal as the Cincinnati Bengals took the Kansas City Chiefs to bed and are now heading to the Super Bowl. Obviously the AFC North is getting better and Joe Burrow and the Bengals are going to be hard to beat, but the Cleveland Browns will have an opportunity to improve with the 13th pick in the NFL Draft and a front office ready to make this team better.

The lovely people at Pro Football Network have been gracious enough to publish a seven round mock draft and I wanted to breakdown who they selected and who I thought maybe a better option.
