WATCH: LSU commit Jalen Brown scores on a long TD reception

One of LSU’s top commits is already making plays during his senior season.

Jalen Brown is a four-star, 6-foot-1, 170-pound wide receiver from Miami, Florida, where he plays for Gulliver Prep. He committed to LSU on July 8.

Gulliver Prep played in a jamboree game on Friday night against Belen Jesuit in which the Raiders took home a 34-14 victory led by Brown, who is rated as a four-star wide receiver by On3, 247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals.

Watch as he shows off his speed and smooth route running as he scores on an almost 80-yard touchdown reception. In the second clip, he beats the defensive back off the line of scrimmage and then shows excellent awareness as he is able to keep both of his feet in bounds and secure the catch that sets up another Gulliver touchdown.

The Raiders start their regular season next Friday night on the road against Rockledge. Gulliver will meet against Belen again in October.

5-star receiver Shelton Sampson Jr. commits to LSU

Brian Kelly just got a huge win on the recruiting trail.

One of the biggest dominoes in the 2023 recruiting class for the Tigers fell on Saturday.

[autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag], a five-star receiver from Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, committed to LSU over Alabama, Texas A&M and Florida State. The 6-foot-4, 181-pound wideout is the No. 33 overall prospect and the No. 4 receiver this cycle, per the 247Sports Composite.

The Tigers have been seen as the heavy favorite to land Sampson for a while, but credit to coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] (and receivers coach [autotag]Cortez Hankton[/autotag]) for closing here. Sampson gives the Tigers their first composite five-star recruit in the 2023 class and their second top-50 receiver as he joins Miami native [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag].

LSU had a great July on the recruiting trail, and it seems that momentum has carried into the month of August. Its class is shaping up to be one of the nation’s best and already ranks No. 7 in the country.

There were some questions about Kelly’s recruiting results in the state of Louisiana, but he has now landed the boot’s No. 3 prospect in Sampson.

5-star Baton Rouge receiver down to four finalists, will decide Aug. 6

The Tigers’ 2023 class could be about to get even better.

The wait for a decision from one of the best players in the 2023 recruiting class will be coming to an end soon.

On Sunday, five-star Catholic (Baton Rouge) receiver [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag] narrowed his list of schools to four and set a commitment date for Aug. 6. The Tigers, who are considered a heavy favorite for Sampson, naturally made the cut alongside Alabama, Florida State and Texas A&M.

“That’s my hometown and they treat me like family,” Sampson told On3 regarding LSU’s coaching staff.

Coach Brian Kelly’s 2023 class already ranks in the top 10 and features a top-100 receiver in Miami prospect [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag], but he may be about to boost the class even higher in the rankings. Sampson is the No. 33 overall prospect and No. 4 receiver, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

He holds two Crystal Ball predictions to the Tigers from 247Sports, and On3 lists LSU as an 89.4% favorite to land him. A surprise could always come next Saturday, but Kelly looks to be in a good position to land the hometown prospect.

Recapping LSU’s recruiting additions during the month of July

Brian Kelly was cooking on the trail in July.

While there was a bit of concern over LSU’s slow start to the 2023 recruiting class, those worries are a thing of the past as the calendar turns to August.

Tigers coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] picked up 11 commitments in the 2023 class — and three in 2024, to boot — during the month of July, enough to propel LSU’s group into the national top 10, according to 247Sports.

There are still some areas of need in the current cycle, including at quarterback, the Tigers have the makings of a very strong class, and they’re not done yet. Here’s who they picked up during a stellar month from Kelly on the trail. All rankings are based on the 247Sports Composite.

Ranking LSU’s top receiver commits since 2000

LSU has made a strong claim in recent years as “WRU.”

LSU’s claim to fame as a program may be as “DBU” thanks to the large number of talented defensive backs it has put into the league, it has made a strong claim as “WRU” in recent years, as well.

The last decade or so has seen the team produce players like [autotag]Odell Beckham Jr.[/autotag], [autotag]Jarvis Landry[/autotag], [autotag]Justin Jefferson[/autotag] and [autotag]Ja’Marr Chase[/autotag]. Not all of those players were elite prospects — namely Jefferson, a former three-star recruit who sat outside the top 2,000 nationally — but many of them were.

LSU has already landed one elite pass-catcher in the 2022 recruiting cycle in [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag], a high-rated four-star who ranks 39th overall in the nation, and it could be about to land a five-star in[autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag], a Baton Rouge native.

Brown ranks as the 11th-best receiver commit the Tigers have ever landed, per the 247Sports Composite. The top 10 were all five-stars coming out of high school. Here’s where each of them stands going back to 2000, which is when the 247Sports recruiting rankings began.

LSU is one of the teams recruiting the best on offense

Brian Kelly’s early recruiting returns on offense have been promising.

LSU had a number of roster holes that needed to be plugged when coach Brian Kelly took over, and though the majority of those holes came on defense — especially in the secondary — the offense also needed some work.

The unit had two lackluster seasons after putting together arguably the best offensive season in college football history with [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag] in 2019, but with several major additions through both high school recruiting and the transfer portal, Kelly has managed to replenish the roster quite a bit.

In a recent breakdown of the teams who are recruiting the best on offense from ESPN, LSU was one of the programs mentioned.

Brian Kelly and his new staff have had success turning the roster over via the transfer portal and with high school prospects. Kelly has commitments from in-state ESPN 300 backs Trey Holly and Kaleb Jackson in the class.

Holly is a 5-foot-8, 180-pound recruit from Farmerville, ranked No. 185 overall, while Jackson is a 5-11, 200-pound back from Baton Rouge, ranked No. 244. While the staff added Penn State back Noah Cain, it lost last season’s leading rusher Tyrion Davis-Price, as well as Corey Kiner, so adding two good options at running back in this class was imperative.

Despite losing Davis-Price and Kiner, the Tigers still have quite a stable of talent in the running back room. LSU also has a commitment from a five-star receiver in the 2022 class in [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag] and could be about to gain another from [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag]

Strong, national recruiting was one of Kelly’s primary selling points as a head coach, and the returns on the offensive side of the ball have been positive so far.

BREAKING: 5-star receiver Jalen Brown commits to LSU

LSU landed its biggest commit of the cycle on Friday.

LSU received its biggest commit of the cycle on Friday.

Five-star receiver Jalen Brown announced he would be committing to LSU, making him the first consensus five-star to join the Tigers’ 2023 recruiting class. Brown chose LSU over Florida State, Michigan, Texas A&M and Miami.

Leading up to his commitment, Brown received a flood of 247Sports Crystal Balls pegging him to LSU and was tabbed as the favorite by On3’s prediction machine as well.

According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Brown is the 29th best player in the class and the fourth-best wide receiver. He’s a top-10 player in the state of Florida.

The 247Sports scouting report described Brown as an elite deep threat with top-level speed. Along with football, Brown is a track star.

There’s a chance for LSU’s 2023 wide receiver class to really stand out if fellow five-star and Baton Rouge prospect [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag] — for whom the Tigers are the favorite — joins the group.

LSU the favorite to land this 5-star receiver

Brown is set to announce his decision on Friday.

[autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag] is a 6-foot-1, 170-pound five-star wide receiver from Miami where he plays for Gulliver Prep. Brown recently announced that he cut his list of schools down to a final list of five.

LSU, Texas A&M, Miami, Michigan, and Florida State all made the cut for the talented speedster. Brown is scheduled to announce his commitment on Friday.

Brown would be a huge pickup for [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the Tigers coaching staff. He would be the first five-star on an ever-growing list of commits for the 2023 class. He’d also be the second wide receiver commit.

It seems like LSU is prioritizing speed in their recruiting, class because when you look at guys like [autotag]Kyle Parker[/autotag] and Brown, both have the speed to burn. You are looking at two athletes that can turn on the afterburners and leave any defense they face in the dust.

This is a big-time of year for commitments. Players have wrapped up their visits for the summer and may want to have their recruitment concluded before their high school season begins in the fall.

Despite the recent wave of decisions, there are still plenty of big targets on the board. LSU has positioned itself well with quite a few. A few of these decisions could come in the next few weeks, with [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag] even poised to decide on Friday.

Let’s take a look at some of the guys you can expect to see put pen to paper for the Tigers when signing day rolls around.
