Mohamed Toure finds the silver lining in last season’s injury: Getting to play with his brother

Rutgers football linebacker Mohamed Toure sees through last season’s injury.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — For Mohamed Toure, a season-ending injury last spring has given him a new perspective on the Rutgers football defense. It also presents him with an opportunity to play college football with his brother.

Something that, but for the injury, wasn’t supposed to happen.

Last spring’s injury, which required surgery, cost Toure what was supposed to be his final season of college football. But now after a medical redshirt, the Rutgers defensive standout is back for one final season of college football.

And in a twist, the injury allowed him to play with his brother, Famah Toure, who joined Rutgers as part of the 2023 recruiting class.

“This is amazing, honestly, it’s a dream come true,” Mohamed said on Thursday.

“If I didn’t get hurt – that’s why I feel like everything happens for a reason, if I didn’t get hurt I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to play with him.”

Famah, a wide receiver, was a consensus three-star recruit and the No. 14 player in the state according to Rivals. He held offers from programs like Boston College, Duke, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Pittsburgh and Syracuse among others.

As for the older brother in the Toure clan, Mohamed is looking to build on a 2021 season where he had 51 tackles and 4.5 sacks. In the Gator Bowl loss to Wake Forest that season, he had six tackles and 1.5 sacks.

The injury wasn’t ideal for Mohamed, but he acknowledges that it gave him the chance to look back last fall and learn.

“I got to really sit back and evaluate not only us but other teams to see how we like set-up towards certain teams and just understand their offensive concepts and things like that,” Mohamed said.

“So it definitely helped a lot. Definitely on the mental aspect.”

This is an important season for Rutgers as a program. Now in their fourth year under head coach Greg Schiano, Rutgers has a deep roster that is definitely improved.

For Toure, who has legitimate NFL ambitions, this season is all about going out as a winner.

There are expectations that last year’s 4-8 team will take a step forward.

“Individual goals – honestly I just want to win,” Mohamed said.

“Whatever I can do to help my team win, that’s what I’m going to do.”

Rutgers football commit Famah Toure has some Kenny Britt in his game

Famah Toure is a bit like former Rutgers football star Kenny Britt.

Famah Toure’s commitment to Rutgers football gives the Scarlet Knights a talented and athletic wide receiver, adding an important potential playmaker at an area where the program needs talent.

A three-star recruit, Toure committed to Rutgers football on Friday evening. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound wide receiver. had a listed final four that included West Virginia, Kentucky and Illinois along with Rutgers.

Toure, a wide receiver out of Irvington, N.J. will remind some Rutgers fans of former Scarlet Knights Kenny Britt.

As a senior in high school at Bayonne, Britt was 6-foot-4, 191 pounds and ranked a four-star by Rivals. His measurables in terms of his length are very similar to the class of 2023 Toure.

Britt was a first-round pick in the 2009 NFL draft and played nine seasons in the league with four teams.

[lawrence-related id=17277]

Like Britt, his frame would suggest a possession wide receiver. But also like Britt, he has the ability to get open downfield and has good speed and elusiveness in the open field.

[lawrence-related id=17239]

Both Toure and Britt, given their frames and length, possess the ability to be possession wide receivers who can move the chains. But it is Toure’s ability to separate at the line and make defenders miss in the open field that makes him very much like Britt.

According to 247Sports, Toure is the No. 13 player in New Jersey in this current recruiting class.

Famah Toure previews Rutgers football official visit…what other programs might get a visit?

Famah Toure previews his upcoming visit to Rutgers football.

Famah Toure has very quietly turned into a top prospect in New Jersey in the class of 2023. He hasn’t sought attention or headlines, but that hasn’t stopped a number of Power Five programs from offering him.

A 6-foot-4, 200-pound wide receiver from Irvington High School (Irvington, N.J.), Toure currently holds 13 offers with 10 coming from Power Five programs: Boston College, Duke, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse and Vanderbilt.

He is a three-star recruit according to Rivals.

Irvington went 12-2 last season.

Toure has official visits lined up in June for Rutgers and Illinois. He said that “Kentucky and West Virginia” could be in-line for an official visit as well.

[lawrence-related id=16302]

As for Rutgers, Toure says what stands out is “the culture they have – I love it.”

“Things are going good,” Toure said about the Scarlet Knights. “I have a strong connection with the coaches at Rutgers.”

Rutgers has a new position coach at wide receiver, Damiere Shaw. The former Temple wide receiver has quickly earned a reputation as a very strong recruiter who connects well with players.

Shaw is also considered a strong technical coach who heavily emphasizes video work and technique in the daily coaching of his position group.

“I have a good relationship with coach Shaw and the coaching staff,” Toure said.

“He actually wants to see you get better and see you develop.”

Shaw was an offensive assistant for the past two years at Rutgers. Prior to that, he was the wide receivers coach at Fordham. He was also on staff at Baylor under Matt Rhule, who is now the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.

As for what Toure is looking for in a program, it is rather simple.

“Not only am I looking for a family environment I’m looking for an opportunity where I can play early,” Toure said.
