Louisville bolsters offense with duo Skinner and Chaney

Louisville continues to stockpile talent for the 2024 season.

The Louisville football team, under head coach Jeff Brohm, has been active in the transfer portal, strengthening its roster with two notable additions: tight end Jaleel Skinner and running back Donald Chaney. Both joined the Cardinals from Miami.

Skinner, a former four-star prospect from Greer, S.C., brings a strong pedigree to Louisville. After spending his senior high school season at IMG Academy in Florida, he was ranked as the No. 100 player in the country and the No. 4 tight end by 247Sports.

At Miami, Skinner had a promising freshman year with nine receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown but saw limited action in 2023, leading him to redshirt and eventually transfer. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Skinner, who has three years of eligibility remaining, chose Louisville over other top programs, making him the 24th transfer portal commitment for the Cardinals.

Donald Chaney, a Miami native and former four-star prospect, finished his four-year stint at Miami with 1,014 all-purpose yards. Despite battling injuries, including an ACL tear, Chaney had his most successful season in 2023, rushing for 478 yards on 94 carries and scoring two touchdowns. A two-time Dade County Player of the Year, Chaney left Belen Jesuit as the school’s all-time leading rusher. With one season of eligibility left, Chaney’s experience and resilience are expected to bolster Louisville’s backfield.

The addition of these two players from Miami is part of a broader strategy by Louisville to tap into the transfer portal. Along with Skinner and Chaney, the Cardinals have secured commitments from Alabama wide receiver Ja’Corey Brooks and UCF cornerback Corey Thornton, both from South Florida. This influx of talent from the transfer portal, particularly from such high-profile programs, underscores Louisville’s commitment to elevating its football program and competing at a higher level in the upcoming seasons.

Miami transfer TE Jaleel Skinner ‘really enjoyed’ his visit to Auburn

Auburn was the first visit for Jaleel Skinner since he entered the transfer portal after starting his career at Miami.

With it looking unlikely that Auburn will sign a high school tight end in the 2024 recruiting cycle, they have decided to dip into the transfer portal to add some youth to the position.

Former Miami Hurricane [autotag]Jaleel Skinner[/autotag] has become the top target and he took an official visit to the Plains over the weekend. The trip reminded him of his hometown and made quite an impression on him.

“It’s been fun,” Skinner told Auburn Undercover’s Christian Clemente. “Auburn, this is the first time I’ve ever been down here and I was like telling my dad riding around and experiencing it all it looks like Greer (South Carolina) to me. It looks like home. I really enjoyed my time here.”

Auburn is Skinner’s only visit so far but he was willing to name then his early leader.

“Auburn’s up there at the top by itself,” he said.

Auburn to host Miami tight end Jaleel Skinner for official visit

Skinner has caught 10 passes for 138 yards in two seasons at Miami.

Auburn snagged a tight end from the Miami area last season from the transfer portal in [autotag]Rivaldo Fairweather[/autotag]. They will try their hand at landing another this season by hosting another tight end this month.

[autotag]Jaleel Skinner[/autotag], formerly of Miami, will take a visit to Auburn during the weekend of Dec. 15-17 according to a report by Jeffrey Lee of Auburn Live.

Skinner entered the transfer portal after spending the first two seasons of his college career at Miami. As a Hurricane, he hauled in 10 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown. He was more productive as a freshman in 2022 when he hauled in nine passes for 129 yards and a score.

His sophomore campaign was not as active, as he made just one catch for nine yards. According to Pro Football Focus, he only appeared in two games and played a total of 25 snaps in 2023.

Despite not having a[anyclip-media thumbnail=”undefined” playlistId=”undefined” content=”dW5kZWZpbmVk”][/anyclip-media] productive start to his career, Skinner was once a high-profile recruit. As a member of the 2022 recruiting cycle from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, Skinner was a four-star tight end according to 247Sports composite rankings. He was the No. 3 tight end and the No. 102 overall player for the class.

Auburn tight end [autotag]Rivaldo Fairweather[/autotag] became Auburn’s leading receiver this season by reeling in 39 passes for 349 yards and six touchdowns. He has one season of eligibility remaining. Tight end [autotag]Brandon Frazier[/autotag] has announced that he will return to Auburn while [autotag]Tyler Fromm[/autotag] has declared his intent to enter the transfer portal.

Alabama loses two 5-star recruits on same day to different programs with new coaches

Alabama strikes out on two 5-stars, losing them to two big programs with new high-profile coaches.

Alabama finished the Early Signing Day with the No. 2 overall 2022 recruiting class, and also managed to land a former five-star recruit in LSU transfer cornerback Eli Ricks.

Following Early National Signing Day, a few high-profile recruits made their commitments public, of those included two Alabama target five-star players: tight end Jaleel Skinner and cornerback Domani Jackson.

Skinner played high school ball at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, and he will stay in the state to play for the Miami Hurricanes and new head coach Mario Cristobal, who recently departed from his former head coaching job at Oregon.

It’s worth noting that Skinner was originally verbally committed to Alabama since early October, but rescinded his verbal commitment today, as he signed with Miami.

Jackson is a five-star cornerback out of California’s Mater Dei, the same school Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young attended. However, Jackson, despite drawing heavy interest from Alabama, will be staying in-state to attend USC and be coached by Lincoln Riley.

Alabama did manage to land four-star athlete Kendrick Law today to add serious depth to the defensive 2022 recruiting class.

5 takeaways from Alabama’s early signing day

5 early signing day takeaways for Alabama

Yesterday, Nick Saban and Alabama hauled in some of the top talent from around the country on early signing day.

Currently, the Tide sits with the second-ranked class in the nation according to On3.

Now that the dust has settled and we have had time to reflect on some of the events from a wild Wednesday, I thought we could take a few moments to look at some of the key takeaways from this steller class for the Crimson Tide.

Let’s get started!

5-star TE Jaleel Skinner is fully committed to the Tide

Five-star TE Jaleel Skinner gives Tide fans a word of confirmation on his commitment to the Crimson Tide

Back on October 8, five-star tight end Jaleel Skinner committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide when many thought that the Texas Longhorns would grab the talented prospect.

The week after Skinner committed to Alabama, he spent time on a visit to Texas. This caused some concern for the Alabama faithful.

Skinner has a great relationship with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and Texas assistant Jeff Banks, who are former assistants under Nick Saban at Alabama.

A couple of days ago Skinner cleared the air on the situation saying, “My commitment to Bama is 100-percent solid,” Skinner told On3. “I visited Texas because I was honoring a visit I had set before my commitment.

“I am signing with Alabama in December.”

Skinner is apart of the top-ranked 2022 class for the Crimson Tide.

Texas loses out on four-star tight end Jaleel Skinner to Alabama

Texas loses out on their only tight end prospect in the 2022 class.

Tight end was not seen as a position of need for Texas in the 2022 class. Jeff Banks was focusing most of recruiting power on some of the biggest named prospects in the country. Four-star Jaleel Skinner was the exception.

When the No. 1 tight end in the country shows interest, you pursue him. Especially at 6-5, 210 pounds with elite ball skills as a receiver. Figure out the depth chart later, just get him on campus.

Unfortunately, Texas lost out on Skinner to Alabama on Friday afternoon. Clemson, Florida, Florida State, and Miami were considered the other contenders. The rich continue to get richer in Tuscaloosa.

A couple of days after Texas moved up to the No. 2 class in the country, they have been bumped down one spot. Surprise, surprise, Alabama now holds the top class for the 2022 cycle. With only 16 commits, Nick Saban could be brewing another historic class.

Having Skinner would have been a huge plus for Texas, but now, the tight end position seems to be closed shop. Banks is not going to pursue any other prospects. Developing former five-star Ja’Tavion Sanders will become the top priority in Austin.

Four-star TE Jaleel Skinner commits to Alabama over Florida, Texas

Alabama is back to the No. 1 class in the country!

Four-star Jaleel Skinner provided himself with a nice birthday present. After originally wanting to reveal his school of choice on Saturday, the tight end moved it up by one day for the ultimate gift.

Skinner announced his commitment to Alabama on Friday afternoon. Texas and Florida were seen as the biggest competitors, with Clemson, Florida State, and Miami lurking in the background. A big win for the Crimson Tide class.

Jahleel Billingsly is a good comparison, being more of a receiving tight end than an all-around guy. Skinner currently plays wide receiver at IMG Academy but thanks to his 6-5, 210-pound frame, he’ll have to move inside.

With the commitment, Alabama has moved up to the No. 1 class, jumping ahead of Texas and Penn State. With only having 16 commitments, another historic cycle is Tuscaloosa bound.

Skinner is the second tight end in Alabama’s class after four-star Elijah Brown committed near Valentine’s Day. It will be the first time since the 2017 class Nick Saban has taken two at the position in the same cycle.

On the 247Sports composite, Skinner is the No. 1 tight end in the country and the No. 74 overall player. Attending IMG Academy, he ranks as the No. 10 player from the state of Florida.

Four-star tight end, Alabama target Jaleel Skinner announces commitment date

A birthday commitment is in store for Jaleel Skinner!

Four-star Jaleel Skinner has provided one of the more interesting recruitments in the 2022 class. The No. 1 tight end in the country has shown interest in multiple schools over the past few months, especially in the state of Florida.

Now, he is ready to give himself a birthday present and close down his recruitment.

Skinner announced he would be making his commitment on Friday at 2:30 p.m. CDT on CBS Sports HQ. Alabama is one of the finalists, alongside Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Miami, and Texas.

If he ends up committing to the good guys, he would be the Crimson Tide’s second-highest ever rated tight end commitment (OJ Howard).

The Crimson Tide has been surging on the 247Sports crystal ball, receiving predictions in the past couple of days. Usually, a good sign for which way the recruitment is flowing.

Looking for a comparison on the current roster from a football perspective, Jahleel Billingsley could be the right one. When thinking about No. 19, blocking is never the first thing in your head. Being a reliable downfield threat is more of his game and getting yards after the catch,

Skinner fits the same mold. He plays more of wide receiver right now but his 6-5, 210-pound frame is going to move him to the inside. Especially with how much speed Alabama’s offense love on the outside.

Originally from South Carolina, Clemson was thought to be the early favorite. Then Skinner made official visits to Florida, Florida State, and Miami alongside Alabama.

Alabama already has a tight end in the 2022 class in four-star Elijah Brown, committing back in February. If Skinner commits and both players stick, it will be the first time since the 2017 class Nick Saban has taken two tight ends in the same cycle.

On the 247Sports composite, Skinner is the No. 1 tight end in the country and the No. 74 overall player. Attending IMG Academy, he ranks as the No. 10 player from the state of Florida.

Texas target, four-star tight end Jaleel Skinner changes commitment date

Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Miami, and Texas are seen as the finalists for Skinner.

Jeff Banks may have the best reputation as a recruiter on Texas’ staff. Steve Sarkisian has put him on some of the most high-profile prospects, ones who would fall under the “must get” category.

Even so, the Longhorns have strayed away from chasing tight ends during the 2022 cycle. Banks’ position group is in a solid spot on the depth chart with Cade Brewer, Jared Wiley, and three promising true freshmen.

Jaleel Skinner has been the exception so far. The four-star tight end has caught the eye of Banks, making him the only true target on the board. An official visit on June 24 helped make the interest mutual as well.

Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Miami, and Texas are seen as the finalists for Skinner. He originally planned on announcing his school of choice on Oct. 9 but the tight end has moved his commitment date up by one day.

CBS Sports HQ will be how you can watch, live at 2:30 CDT.

Three days out, Alabama seems to be the leader. Multiple 247Sports crystal balls predictions have been inserted in favor of the Crimson Tide over the past couple of days. Florida State was seen as the leader over the summer but a 1-4 start has hurt Mike Norvell’s recruiting.

Even if Alabama ends up being the pick, Texas will still fight to get Skinner back on campus for a visit. Nothing is ever official in recruiting until the fax is sent on national signing day. Especially with a Red River Shootout performance pending the next day.

Skinner is seen as a wide receiver more than anything, however, his 6-5, 210-pound frame will force him to move to tight end. Sarkisian’s use of 12 personnel could be a selling point as Skinner is able to use his pass-catching skills while developing as a blocker.

On the 247Sports composite, Skinner is the No. 1 tight end in the country and the No. 74 overall player. Attending IMG Academy, he ranks as the No. 10 player from the state of Florida.
