On3 names five must-get recruits for Texas’ 2022 class

Steve Sarkisian has an important few months of recruiting ahead of them. Here are Texas’ five must-get recruits remaining in the 2022 class.

Texas’ recruiting momentum has been soaring high, especially alongside the defensive line. A win against Arkansas would have helped even more but instead, a gut-punch back to reality faces Steve Sarkisian and his staff.

Although the Longhorns have the No. 3 class in the country, there is still plenty of work to do. Some of the top targets on the board are still available and will require dog fights to win out for.

Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas and On3 has named five must-get recruits for Texas. Unless numbers are mixed around by the coaching staff, there are only five spots left in the 2022 class. It would be one heck of a way to close out the cycle.

To put in perspective how big of gets these guys would be, landing all five to close shop would have been good enough for the No. 3 class in the country last year. Only Alabama and Ohio State would have signed more five-star prospects.

Sarkisian and his staff have an important few months ahead of them. Here are Texas’ five must-get recruits remaining in the 2022 class.

Four-star TE Jaleel Skinner announces commitment date

Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Miami, and Texas make up Jaleel Skinner’s top five schools. A commitment date has been set for Oct. 9.

Texas’ recruiting board is deep from top to bottom at every position except one. After assessing the current roster, Jeff Banks decided tight end was not the biggest need. Only one of the nation’s best would be worth pushing for.

Four-star Jaleel Skinner is the guy Banks has set his eyes on. He ranks as the No. 1 tight end on the 247Sports composite. Originally from the state of California, Skinner transferred to IMG Academy in Florida for his senior season.

After receiving over 20 offers from across the country, Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Miami, and Texas make up Skinner’s top five schools. A commitment date has been set for Oct. 9, the day after his birthday.

Skinner made four official visits during the summer, seeing three of his top five schools. Alabama, Miami, and Texas hosted the tight end, while Florida was seen before getting cut.

A trip to Tallahassee is on the calendar for their matchup against Notre Dame. That will be his fifth and final official visit, leaving Clemson behind.

On the 247Sports crystal ball, Florida State currently leads with nine total predictions. The former hometown Clemson Tigers are still hanging on by a thread with one prediction.

Skinner projects as one of the flex tight ends beginning to take over college football. Listed at 6-foot-5, 210-pounds, the four-star lined up as a wide receiver during his junior season at Greer (SC) High School. In no way is his speed at an elite level, but Skinner will be one of the best pass-catching tight ends in the country during his college days.

Something Sarkisian could use in the offense right away. Especially with all of the 12 personnel he is projected to use.

The nation’s top-ranked tight end in the 2022 class has set his commitment date.

Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy four-star Jaleel Skinner said on social media Tuesday night that he will announce his commitment on Oct. 9, the day after his birthday.

In mid-July, Skinner (6-5, 210) dropped a final five that included Clemson along with Alabama, Florida State, Miami and Texas.

Skinner took official visits to Alabama, Miami, Texas and Florida in June, while he is slated to officially visit Florida State on Sept. 5. He also made an unofficial visit to Clemson in June to participate in the Dabo Swinney Camp.

Skinner is ranked as the No. 1 tight end and No. 73 overall prospect in the country for the 2022 class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Skinner will play his upcoming senior season at IMG Academy after transferring from Greer (S.C.) High School.

Top 2022 TE Jaleel Skinner transfers to IMG Academy

Top class of 2022 tight end recruit Jaleel Skinner is set to play his senior year at one of the premier programs in high school football.

Top class of 2022 tight end recruit Jaleel Skinner is set to play his senior year at one of the premier programs in high school football.

It was announced on Monday that Skinner is transferring to IMG Academy to conclude his high school football career. Skinner has already arrived in Bradenton and is on IMG Academy’s campus for the beginning of preseason practices.

Skinner started his high school career at Greer High School in South Carolina. There, he played wide receiver, tight end and cornerback, earning 24 offers with his sophomore and junior year film. In last year’s COVID-19-shortened high school football season, Skinner helped Greer to a 3-2 record.

Skinner is the No. 74 overall recruit in the class of 2022 and top-ranked tight end, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound tight end took official visits to Alabama, Miami and Texas in June and is scheduled to visit Florida State in September.

“A legit 6-foot-5 with a slender build,” 247Sports’ Andrew Ivins said in his scouting report of Skinner. “Wingspan stretches well over 80 inches. One of the more unique skill players in the class of 2022 given lengthy frame. Has spent majority of prep career split out wide as a jumbo wide receiver. Viewed by most college staffs, however, as a flex tight end at the next level. Extraordinary catch radius. Uses long stride to work his way down the field. Takes advantage of soft coverage on a consistent basis. Isn’t the most physical of prospects, but is relatively competitive after the catch. Track background helped foster some straight-line speed. Entry-level blocker at this stage in his development, which is almost expected for someone on the leaner side. Will obviously need to bulk up as he was under 225 pounds the spring before senior season. Also needs to get better at attacking the ball in the air and could get more fluid with his movement patterns. In no way a polished product, but has an extremely high ceiling given physical stature. Should eventually contribute for a Top 25 program and make an impact in the passing game once body matures. NFL upside.”

Gators in the mix for two of ESPN’s top remaining offensive recruits

Florida has been working the recruiting trail hard in June. That hard work could soon pay off with one of Evan Stewart or Jaleel Skinner.

The flurry of official visits and other recruiting activities that have taken place in the month of June in order to take advantage of the available time to meet face to face has led to a number of wanted players in the 2022 class coming off the board. The Gators themselves have landed recruitments from CJ Smith and Shemar James following visits to the school, and Julian Humphrey and Isaiah Bond have used the opportunities to strengthen their conviction in Florida’s coaching.

There are still a number of high-impact players in the 2022 recruiting class still undecided on a destination, though. On Monday, ESPN detailed the best available 2022 college football recruits by offensive position, according to their rankings. The Gators have been tied to the recruitment of two of those players.

The higher-rated of the pair is Evan Stewart, a wide receiver from the state of Texas. He snagged five stars from the ESPN staff and the eighth spot on their top 300 board. The Gators hosted him for an official visit, and he got the red carpet treatment from the team and a fellow 2022 recruit quarterback Nick Evers, another Texan and UF commit who has taken it upon himself to help in any way possible with Gators recruiting.

“It was fun; it was actually amazing. I loved it and enjoyed it. It was really fun,” he said to Rivals after his visit. “I mean, me and Nick, we were everywhere together. We were just talking about everything, what we liked, what was going on, and what our futures would be like if we were both to end up here.”

The other player who Florida has been making overtures toward included in the ESPN writeup is tight end Jaleel Skinner, a 4-star prospect ranked 68th on their board. While he’s slowplaying his recruitment, Florida is definitely in the mix to land a commitment from Skinner in the fall.

What stood out to Skinner on his official visit to Florida was how well he was treated by the coaches.

“I had all the coaches there with me doing the photoshoot,” he told Rivals after his visit. “They’re not going to change something from one player (to the next) to make it sound good. I really like that. They’re real genuine and they tell you how it is. They have great coaches and are great people all around.”

While the Gators’ 2022 recruiting class doesn’t have that star commit just yet, they’re hot on the trail of a handful of potentially high-end players. Whether their cornerstone recruit winds up being Skinner, Stewart, or someone else, it’s refreshing to know that they’re not pulling punches and are consistently making a good impression on good players.

LSU in top-10 for four-star tight end

LSU could bolster the offense in the future by adding this pass-catcher.

One of the nation’s top-rated 2022 tight ends has narrowed his list of schools down to his top 10, and LSU is on that list.

Four-star tight end Jaleel Skinner tweeted Monday his top schools, but it’s undetermined if the list was in order of ranking. The other schools listed included Florida, Texas, Miami, Arizona State, Clemson, Alabama, Florida State, Oregon, and Oklahoma.

With such an extensive and prestigious list to choose from, LSU is in for a tough battle to land the 6-foot-5 junior from Greer, SC. 247Sports’ has Skinner ranked as the No. 3 tight end in the country, and he’s also rated as the No. 94 overall player in the 2022 class.

Now that schools are allowing visits, Skinner will make an official visit to Florida on June 9. He also has unofficial visits scheduled in June.

[lawrence-related id=17939]

Skinner creates a mismatch on the field with his size, making him attractive for any offensive system, especially the LSU Tigers. Very seldom does an athlete with his size and athleticism at the tight end position come around, so the battle may very well be worth it.

LSU has done a fine job with offseason hires, especially on the offensive side of the football. There’s competition in the best of ways at positions like quarterback, and it will be interesting to see how the Tigers keep the momentum flowing moving forward.
